Monkey 3 – Sphere

Monkey 3 – Sphere
(Napalm Records, 2019)

Monkey 3 – Sphere
(Napalm Records, 2019)

The moment when the gaseous fog opening Prism is broken by a beam of melodic light, literally epic and magnificent. That is the instant in which I realize the jump into the hyperspace made by Monkey 3 with their new record. Sharp, bright, with a dazzling clarity. A leap towards a seemingly unattainable quantum state. Abandoning the gravity 0 environment dear to the most hypnotic space rock, the Swiss compose a sci-fi progressive rock record, which looks with lucidity and determination beyond psychedelic spirals, using as an instruction manual what Pink Floyd wrote half a century ago. If in some passages the wide spaces created by the band can convey a sense of vertigo, on the whole the spacecraft's control cloche is always firmly in the hands of its pilots, who guide us through galaxies, along well-defined trajectories. The emotional, almost cinematographic, emphasis of the six new instrumental compositions is functional to the construction of the climax. A perfect take-off, calculated with engineering precision. A flight that is insensitive to turbulence, like that of a drone whose hyper-stabilized movement allows for steady and focused shots. The final Ellipsis represents the escape from the atmosphere and, with its obsessive gait in the cosmic void, it stuns like the old but gold 35007 records, before exploding in Tool-like distortion shots, giving that unpredictability that any space travel needs.

Motorpsycho – The Crucible

Motorpsycho – The Crucible
(Stickman Records, 2019)

Motorpsycho – The Crucible
(Stickman Records, 2019)

50 years have passed since the first Big Bang generated by the Crimson King. Since then his majesty has manifested himself through other cosmic explosions, each capable of expanding the boundaries of the rock universe. But in the year 50 of the progressive calendar the Universe seems frozen. Robert Fripp communicates with his spirit guide only during concerts, and original songs are increasingly rare. Yet there is still someone who has the ability to present himself at the court of the King, to then return to our dimension bringing in a splendid gift of music. Motorpsycho are among these few. Long-time space explorers, these Norwegians go deeper and deeper into the progressive galaxy with The Crucible. Three long tracks whose labyrinthine architecture is in perfect balance despite the continuous movement. And this makes it a more cohesive record than the previous The Tower. Not a real Big Bang, but without a doubt the birth of a splendid star (yet another in the career of the Norwegian band). The vocal plots have the psychedelic flavour of Close to the Edge (Yes) and some nerve splinters seem to come from another primordial explosion, that of Pawn Hearts (Van Der Graaf Generator). Just as it had happened to Steven Wilson, another of the few contemporary musicians capable of transforming his own Crimsonian obsessions into high-level music, even the current Motorpsycho lacks the unpredictability and the ability to amaze typical of 70s prog, but certainly not the imagination and sensitivity of that era. The galaxies in which they accompany us are certainly not unexplored, but the sense of wonder that one feels in front of the melodies and atmospheres of The Crucible deserve a trip to the borders of the Universe.

L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII

L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII
(Subsound Records, 2018)

Processo alchemico perfettamente riuscito.

L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII
(Subsound Records, 2018)

It all starts here. The alchemical transformation takes place during two concerts in 2007 in Genzano. It is here that Loosin 'o' Frequencies become an instrumental band and capture this moment in a recording that only today, more than 10 years later, takes on physical form. And it is with this recording in its hands, in 2008, that the band decides to change its name in L'Ira del Baccano and to make its music available to everyone, in the liquid form of mp3 published online. Since then the recording of those concerts has solidified in the conscience of many fans of the underground, contributing to make L'Ira del Baccano one of the most interesting names as live act. The last, indispensable, transformation, allows us to insert in our discography, alongside the two studio albums, a physical copy of this precious document, to all effects the first brainchild of the Roman band. We cross the alchemical gate (Si non sedes is is an epigraph engraved on this monument hidden in the heart of Rome) to realize how much the band was already then mature to conceive what came later. That is a dilatation and deformation of heavy sounds, sometimes doom and sabbath influenced, in vast airy progressive suites with a fluid and iridescent structure, on the borders of space rock (echoes of Coma Divine and Space Ritual beyond the door). Transmutation of lead into gold, through free flowing jams. Music freed from genres limitations, able to absorb past and present, transforming them into an absolutely personal future. Perfectly successful alchemical process.

Empty Set - Empty Set

Empty Set - Empty Set
(Tuna Records, 2018)

Poi tutto, all'improvviso, bruscamente s'interrompe. Come l'unico superstite di Time Enough At Last (dalla prima stagione di The Twilight Zone).

Empty Set - Empty Set
(Tuna Records, 2018)

If it is an empty set, certainly it is not due to
music. Rather for the nihilistic and apocalyptic attitude lurking in the lyrics of this project. On the contrary, musically we are overwhelmed by all the richness of progressive rock, in his most surgical and metal form. Sharp, limpid, almost lashing sounds. A distillate of rhythmic and melodic joints, on which equally chiseled and sharpened vocal lines and choruses are grafted. Anyway, something devious and sinister animates this crystal universe. A vaguely psychedelic vein, which reconnects itself to the 70s progressive rock, but that is definitely plumbeous and murky and deviates from the reference genre, making the path of these unnamed six songs even more convoluted and unpredictable. At times it seems to be in front of the first Pain of Salvation, at the time of Remedy Lane. Both for the vocal approach and for the construction of the musical discourse, as much in the melodies as - above all - in the rhythmic fragmentation of the sound pattern. The more you listen to it, the more this apparently cold and detached music enters inside you and opens up all its expressive power. The desolate landscapes - especially the interior ones - built by Alessandro Vagnoni are revealed in all their strenght, and Enrico Tiberi's voice is that of the only Virgil who can describe these visions. Then all of a sudden everything abruptly stops. There is a feeling of being alone. As the only survivor of Time Enough At Last (from the first season of The Twilight Zone).

Rinunci a Satana? - Blerum Blerum

Rinunci a Satana? - Blerum Blerum
(Wallace Records, Il Verso del Cinghiale, Edison Box, E io pago! Records, 2018)

Rinunci a Satana? - Blerum Blerum
(Wallace Records, Il Verso del Cinghiale, Edison Box, E io pago! Records, 2018)

The cover of the new album by Rinunci a Satana? (work of the always masterful SoloMacello) describes in pictures all that we find inside it. (Passed) through a dense forest of 70s blues rock, well contaminated by mushrooms with undoubted psychedelic strength, we are faced with - and in the middle of - dusty sprawls, with the warm taste of a sun-drenched desert, but at dusk, when a more intimate light and a more personal gait cover everything with a more suffused and sometimes almost progressive atmosphere (especially La Serata del Gourmet). But we are not faced with a flat annihilating landscape. We are not inert and stunned. The trip is on the back of a steed running behind Damiano Casanova guitar, blindly obeying to the call of Marco Mazzoldi drums. We are on the set of a western (a beautiful 60s Italian western, but also one of those with a strong ironic vein): we go through canyons, we bivouac in ghost villages next to abandoned mines, we arrive in a saloon where cowboy, dozed Mexicans, tipsy Indians and the classic winky beauties live side by side. There is time for a fiery duel and an attack against a stagecoach. But there is also the time to waste around a bonfire or under the dusty porch of a shack in an old ranch, with a bourbon in hand (as in Salice Mago). There is no need of words to describe this trip to the Rocky Mountains: just some slightly distorted and reverberated choruses in Chi sta scavando?, which are a sort of an extra instrument rather than a real vocal track. The beauty of this album is also in its natural ability to tell a story only through the power of music and its manifold twists. We do not renounce Satan: let abandon ourselves to his call and let ourselves be carried on this journey, which smells of vintage, but absolutely does not stink of nostalgia!

Messa - Feast for Water

Messa - Feast for Water
(Aural Music, 2018)

Immersione profonda.

Messa - Feast for Water
(Aural Music, 2018)

Deep immersion. In the ocean of this Earth. In the swamp of this Humanity. At the pure sources of the ego. Along the rivers of being. In the lakes of the here and now. The expressive urgency of an immanent and inescapable imminent. Messa second album marks an enormous growth compared to the already wonderful Belfry (2016). Growth both from a musical point of view and from a communicative and emotional one. Sometimes almost on tiptoe, like sleepwalkers suspended in midair, we go through oneiric landscapes, skillfully sketched by a few indispensable keyboard notes supported by minimalist drums (as in Leah). Sometimes instead we are dragged in a whirlwind of emotions, as in a race through a forest of fears, with a guitar that commands us like the flute of the Pied Piper (for example in The Seer and She knows). The most diverse seeds bloom in the music of the quartet from Cittadella. From the wide open spaces of dark ambient to the deep caves of doom. From the refined occult rock atmospheres to almost jazz passages, opening scenarios which are reminiscent of Lynch soundtracks (She knows). And often these multiple souls coexist and manifest themselves even within the same song, since there is an almost progressive rock structure at the base of their composition. In all this, on all this, a voice of beauty, power and capacity as few. A sort of feminine Orpheus that enchants the listener, taking him where she wants, showing him what she wants. At times as moving as Anneke Van Giersbergen, other times with the evocative power of Lisa Gerrard. But basically Sara's voice is so expressive and fascinating precisely because, extremely personal, it escapes labels and the game of similarities. Feast for Water is an album with an almost shamanic force, which feeds on ancestral images and feelings, capable of touching (and making resonate) the deepest and most intimate strings. Dare to immerse yourself in its waters, let your ear listen to the song of the Sirens.

Motorpsycho – The Tower

Motorpsycho – The Tower
(Stickman Records, 2017)

Motorpsycho – The Tower
(Stickman Records, 2017)

Ambition and sense of challenge have always animated Motorpsycho, who make the most of their overflowing imagination once again with a double album: The Tower. This time they challenge themselves with the construction of an imposing architecture, with solid hard rock foundations, not afraid to rise itself towards the celestial sphere in psychedelic territories with the lightness and fluidity of improvisation typical of the band. Their ziggurat is made of complicated intertwining and splitting corridors, and spiral staircases that descend, rise, merge together, in a continuous game of optical illusions worthy of Escher's visions. The Tower of Babel raised by the three Norwegians could run the risk of collapsing under the weight of pretentiousness, and instead it succeeded in the impossible: to make converse different languages, by their very nature often destined not to understand one another. The creativity of the trio combines powerful progressive epicness (you can often breath the atmosphere of the Crimson King's court) and delicate pop ballads, as well as rocky stoner outbursts dissolve into an ethereal psychedelic fine dust. The Tower is a fascinating Lego construction that the three enjoy themselves doing and undoing, giving life to structures that are always different and colorful, distinguished by their typical desire for experimentation.

In apertura Árstíðir.

On the first day of the month leading up to Christmas, perhaps I receive my best present.

Árstíðir first of all. Essentially acoustic (keyboard/synth and two guitars), the Icelandic trio is a real revelation. Almost on tiptoe, I find myself in the middle of a forest without trees, guided by three suggestive voices, bringing me in a world far away in space and time through their interweavings and metamorphosis. Ragnar Ólafsson stands out above all: a true classical pianist with a voice of multifaceted beauty and power. Their mix of post rock and Nordic folk is the intimate - and perfect - introduction for an evening that will finally reveal how much heat nestles beneath these vast frozen lands.

Then Myrkur. More elf than witch, the Danish singer strikes me immediately for the crystalline nightingale voice. Almost set aside the atmospheric black metal of the beginnings, tonight's set focuses on Nordic folk atmospheres. Accompanied by a solid compact purely metal band, Myrkur enchants with the clarity of her voice. A few moments when she let herself go to a scathing excruciating screaming, in which however she is impressive for her naturalness and versatility. Great live show, which denies those detractors who were talking about a commercial phenomenon built around a table.

Finally Sólstafir. Hardly to be bridled in a rigid predefined genre, the band from Reykjavík, originally black metal, spans today on vast and absolutely personal territories, that go beyond the confines of their desert land (which whilst they feed on) landing on the vast prairies of the American continent. And tonight's concert is the perfect expression of this musical universe. In a crescendo of expressive intensity, Sólstafir set stands out not only for technical and compositional skills, but also for the dense stream of suggestions and sensations poured on the listener. From the stage, the band constantly talks with its audience. And in this continuous exchange, Aðalbjörn Tryggvason stands out for its communication and involvement skills. Sort of Nick Cave of the far north, the leader of Icelandic band captures not only with his distinctive voice (lacerating, strident and full), but also with his words, his gestures, his descent into the audience going truly and physically towards it. Really exciting. With full rights in my personal chart of 2017 best concerts.

Motorpsycho - 04.11.2017 - The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

Motorpsycho - 04.11.2017 - The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

Motorpsycho - 11.04.2017 - The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

Nothing superfluous, everything is essential. This is the thought that slowly got way in my head during the 2 hour and 30 minutes Motorpsycho concert. And this is not of little significance. Especially if you think of all the ultra-positive advertising that had anticipated this event. Everyone - none excluded! - talked about an impressive unforgettable concert, a matchless live. The risk of disappointment was therefore one step away: easy to remain unfulfilled after such an enthusiastic preparation. Absolutely not, instead. All I was told found exact correspondence in a performance that confirmed all the positive judgments and - from a strictly personal and emotional point of view - also overcame them.

More than a concert, an experience. Accustomed to bands usually playing no more than an hour, an hour and a half, it's really amazing to be faced with a trio that shows off a set that lasts nearly twice the time and that never suffers from falls of intensity. You reach the end of the long setlist without ever having realized that you remained wonderstruck for its whole duration with eyes fixed on the stage and ears stretched towards each single note. In this timespan a multitude of sensations have crossed and - in my case - exalted the audience. They range from musical compositions that seem almost like soundtracks, to songs that are as powerful and enthralling as only some pieces of psychedelic hard rock are. There are crescendo that surpass the beauty of that post-rock à la GY! BE, and dilatations knocking on the door of the Crimson King. All this thanks to the incredible - technical, but also expressive - skill of three Norwegian musicians (assisted by a great session man on keyboards, trumpet, guitar and choirs) as you will rarely find around.

The setlist largely - and rightly - focuses on the brand new The Tower. But with about twenty albums, the band from Trondheim is spoilt for choice, and it spans up and down almost thirty years of history, picking also from 90s records. And - as in the concert of exactly the week before (Paradise Lost, even them a thirty-year-old band!) - the amazing thing is the perfect mix of past and present, of the childhood of the band and its full maturity, through all its evolutionary phases. All this with a variety of sound, genres and solutions that is really impressive and counts few competitors.

This was my first (!!!) Motorpsycho concert. Now I cannot wait to hear them live again!

Elder – Reflections of a Floating World

Elder – Reflections of a Floating World
(Stickman Records, 2017)

Elder – Reflections of a Floating World
(Stickman Records, 2017)

In an era when music is devoured compulsively and distractedly, with the idea that music should be shaped by our sensitivity (and not, on the contrary, that our sensitivity should mature through music), Reflections of a Floating World is a revolutionary album in its own way. It is an album that needs a deep immersion, with wide open doors of perception, to absorb the complex sonic ocean that characterizes it. Six long contorted tracks, real coral reefs of progressive rock, within which it is wonderful to be carried away by the currents of the stoner riffs. But even more remarkable is to drown into them when vast pinkfoydian views open themselves in front of us. In these 10s where artwork is reduced to tiny jpeg files in our smartphone while listening to mp3s, it may sound like a nostalgic and "moralistic" act towards the present time to take the vinyl of Reflections of a Floating World in your hands, discard it, sniff it and, even before putting it onto the turntable, enter the floating world pictured on its cover. Yet the freshness of its songs shows how much this appeal to a typically 70s way of living the music has nothing to do with revivalism. Elder personality is much more solid than a superficial listener - who merely acknowledges High Tide guitar frenzy or Nektar and Camel melodic openings - may perceive. Elder do not oppose the present. In the impetuosity of their roaring waterfall of notes there is all the creativity and the overflowing energy of a current and present time. Breaking like a wave on the rocks of the past, all the impetus of "here and now" absorbs its essence and then vaporizes in unpredictable and unrepeatable sketches. Being on the shore of this floating world, and being overwhelmed by this wave, will make our sensitivity mature, and ourselves too.

Elav Stoner Open Air Fest - 08.07.2017 - Birrificio Elav (Comun Nuovo, BG)

Elav Stoner Open Air Fest - 08.07.2017 - Birrificio Elav (Comun Nuovo, BG)
[Karma to Burn + My Sleeping Karma + Toner Low + Monte Nero + Ride Paranoia]

Estate torrida e afosa.

Veramente gustosi!

Karma opposti.

Elav Stoner Open Air Fest - 07.08.2017 - Birrificio Elav (Comun Nuovo, BG)
[Karma to Burn + My Sleeping Karma + Toner Low + Monte Nero + Ride Paranoia]

Torrid and sultry summer. A boundless plain that smells of manure and smog. It takes fresh beer and stoner rock. These two ingredients can be found at Birrificio Elav, in the neighbourhood of Bergamo, where a (free admission) 2 days festival dedicated to sandy and valvular sounds has been organized. I'm here for the second day, starting around 6 pm, with the Sun still high in the sky.

The first ones to get tanned on stage are Ride Paranoia. Their alternative rock is a great aperitif to start the evening. Fresh like a Pils from the tap, they mix direct stoner rock riffs and catchy tunes (sons of Queens of the Stone Age) with an interesting electronic aftertaste, thanks to the use of synths. Really tasty!

Monte Nero, instead, have the toasted and bitter taste of a high-alcoholic stout. We are next to the southern stoner of Corrosion of Conformity, made acid by vocal harmonization reminiscent of Alice in Chains (particularly beautiful the voice of the bassist) and by some edgy noisy guitar arrangements, halfway between Fatso Jetson and Steve Albini bands. For my palate, their riffs lack a bit of incisiveness and their songs abound a bit too much in sung parts at the expense of the instrumental ones, but overall they are a great drink!

Sandwich, another great craft beer of the brewery hosting us, and I am back under the stage for Toner Low. I finally attend to a gig of the Dutch band after more than 10 years. At that time it was a concert at Cox 18 in Milan, and they literally wiped me away with their extremely ultra-dilated riffs. Since the time of their first (amazing) full length has passed so long, and the trio, in addition to having changed bassist (now in formation is the former 7Zuma7 Miranda Vandervoot), has lowered even more their tuning and completely abolished high frequencies. Their music is a magma of distortion at the limit of the infrasound, completely stunning the audience (though unfortunately it does not affect mosquitoes, chewing me up for the whole evening!). At the end of their concert I feel dazed as if had drunk dozens of beers! And although the experience was certainly engaging, I miss a bit the attack they used to have when they were still characterized by a range of frequencies audible to the human ear.

Greeted by a great audience enthusiasm, accompanied by a light breeze and black clouds with the potential for the classic summer storm for excess moisture, My Sleeping Karma get on stage. Their progressive space rock is pulsating and dynamic, dragged by a rhythmic section that is precise and rich in groove. Oriental melodies, post rock arpeggios and liquid sounds. Everything flows, continuously. Just a moment and the clouds are gone, carried away by the fluid and unstoppable music of the band. There is not that unpredictability that one could expect from a musical genre free of constraints like this. No improvisation, no tiny granules of dust to dirty the songs. Everything is as sparkling as water and solidly built, even though the buildings of the German band are as surreal as those of an Escher painting, with stairways chasing each other in every direction and mirrors reflecting each structure. Real architects of musical composition capable of creating a fascinating music.

After having been purified by My Sleeping Karma aquatic music, the return to alcohol excesses with Karma to Burn. Opposed karma. Since the first riff - groovy, dirty and powerful - I understand that the band is more compact and dynamic than the concert I attended to exactly a year ago. Killing riffs, valve sound, energy flowing through the audience, and finally mosh. Soon, however, a guitar string breaks. Will Mechum replaces the instrument, but the substitute loses part of the grim and rumbling strength of the Les Paul. But energy never fails. Pure stoner rock. The true and genuine one. Built on incredibly powerful riffs. When also a rope of the second guitar breaks, Mechum is forced to change the string of his Les Paul and he finally plays that again. So the concert ends as it began, with that powerful sound, smelling of tequila and cigarettes, difficult to get into the brain staying still. The final beer is dedicated to Karma to Burn, a band to which Italian citizenship should be honored, given the many concerts in our country, in recent times. And of course it is also dedicated to those who have organized an amazing festival like this! Cheers!

Gong - Rejoice! I'm Dead!

Gong - Rejoice! I'm Dead!
(Madfish, 2016)

Gong - Rejoice! I'm Dead!
(Madfish, 2016)

I imagine Daevid Allen on a flying teapot. Fluctuating in a surreal paradise, among pixies and gigantic radiant eyes, cheerfully jamming with the many musicians in the Beyond, or devoting himself to free love with his (also artistic) half Gilli Smyth.
I imagine that every now and then, up above, he sends a telepathic signal, aware of the fact that there is still a radar on planet Earth that can capture the cosmic waves of his creativity: Gong. The community of which he was founder and guru continues to carry on the positive vibrations of his music, for his explicit will, with an album in which the spirit of the Australian musician resonates as if he was still on stage without any nostalgic feeling. Rejoice! I'm Dead!, as it is clear from the title, possesses the irony that Gong have always nourished, and it is at the same time a tribute to Freedom. The extraordinary musicians who have accompanied Allen in the last few years have got the creative wealth to conceive an imaginative and funny album. Almost funky rhythmic energy coexists with surreal jazz passages, as psychedelic melodies expand  themselves into vast landscapes that need deep immersion, in complete meditation. Echoes of King Crimson are perceived repeatedly in the album - from crooked solos to concentric guitar arpeggios, to the overlapping sound layers, capable of creating great soundscapes. The personality of these musicians, especially that of Kavus Torabi (also member of Guapo), stands out within the compositions and gives further freshness to the musical paths traced by Allen throughout a lifetime. Up above, from that fluctuating teapot, the good Daevid laughs satisfied. He has been able to create an artistic entity that is still alive, free and creative, and that survives even to his death.
