Dopo tutti questi mesi ed ancora in mezzo a tante incertezze, il concerto dei Calibro 35 di stasera ha tutte le carte in regola per essere definito un evento eccezionale. E come tale l'ho vissuto. Quasi fosse una prima volta in senso assoluto.

L'organizzazione dell'evento è stata praticamente perfetta. E in un momento come questo, in cui c'è una certa tendenza al lassismo e opposte correnti tirano da una parte e dall'altra, vale la pena sottolinearlo.

Tornare ad un concerto dal vivo dopo tutti questi mesi mi ha fatto davvero riassaporare la bellezza di quando, ragazzina, andavo per la prima volta nei locali o ai primi festival, ed ero elettrizzata dall'evento, dalla bellezza unica che solo la musica dal vivo è capace di sprigionare. Perché un concerto è qualcosa che va oltre la musica. E' quell'unicum che viene fuori dall'unione di musica, band, locale, persone, atmosfera, e molto altro ancora. Potrai sentire mille volte una stessa band dal vivo, ma non ascolterai mai lo stesso concerto. 

In effetti i Calibro 35 li ho già sentiti svariate volte. E se mai nessuna volta è stata uguale alla precedente, questo concerto è stato quasi come sentirli per la prima.

Molti i pezzi dal nuovo Momentum, uscito ad inizio anno, quando ancora a malapena si parlava di pandemia. Se già il disco mi era piaciuto, dal vivo le nuove canzoni fanno sentire ancora più chiara la loro voce, rimarcando le nuove sfumature e la crescita della band milanese. Appunto di crescita ed evoluzione si tratta, e non di rottura. E lo si capisce bene guardando al quadro che compongono inserite nel resto della loro produzione, nell'alternanza fra le vecchie e le nuove tracce. Un tessuto coeso e ricco di sfaccettature. Una colonna sonora - addirittura un vero e proprio film - che tocca moltissimi temi ed emozioni, con grande ricchezza espressiva. Il set di stasera, la meravigliosa cornice della Rocca Malatestiana di Cesena, ha completato il quadro, rendendo davvero perfetto questo momento. 

Voglio tornare a vivere più spesso la musica dal vivo. Con nuove cornici e nuove modalità come stasera, magari. L'importante è che la musica continui a uscire dalle casse, giù dai palchi, davanti ad un pubblico di persone in carne e ossa.

Calibro 35 - 08.01.2020 - Rocca Malatestiana (Cesena)

After all these months and still in the midst of so many uncertainties, tonight's Calibro 35 concert has what it takes to be defined as an exceptional event. And as such I lived it. As if it were a first time in an absolute sense.

The organization of the event was practically perfect. And at a time like this, when there is a certain tendency to laxity and opposite currents pull from one side to the other, it is worth pointing it out.

Returning to a live concert after all these months made me really savour the beauty of when, as a young girl,  for the first time I went to clubs or festivals, and I was thrilled by the event, by the unique beauty that only live music is capable of unleashing. Because a concert is something that goes beyond music. It is that unicum that comes out of the union of music, band, club, people, atmosphere, and much more. You might listen to the same band live a thousand times, but you will never listen to the same concert.

Many pieces from the brand new Momentum, released at the beginning of the year, when there was still hardly any talk of a pandemic. If I already liked the album, live the new songs make their voices even clearer, underlining the new nuances and the growth of the band. It is a matter of growth and evolution, and not of rupture. And it can be understood looking at the painting they make up inserted in the rest of their production, in the alternation between the old and the new tracks. A cohesive and multi-faceted fabric. A soundtrack - even a movie - that touches many themes and emotions, with great expressive richness. Tonight's set, the wonderful setting of Rocca Malatestiana in Cesena, completed the picture, making this moment truly perfect.

I want to go back to concerts more often. With new settings and new modes like tonight, maybe. What matters is that music keeps going out of the speakers, down from the stages, in front of an audience of people in flesh and blood.

Dal cinema al teatro. I Calibro 35 trasportano la loro musica da colonna sonora sul più nobile dei palcoscenici. Ma non si tratta di un teatro qualsiasi, bensì del Teatro Romano di Fiesole, uno dei più antichi esistenti (fine del I secolo a.C.). Se i luoghi possiedono un’anima, questo ne ha una che entra fin da subito in sintonia con la musica di stasera. Al cospetto di millenni di storia i Calibro 35 mettono in scena una rappresentazione incentrata sulle architetture visionarie e futuribili del loro ultimo album (Decade), perfettamente a loro agio in un luogo antico come questo. Geometrie di linee curve (pietre e note) che si fondono. Fantasie architettoniche anni '70 e realtà costruite 2000 anni fa, inaspettatamente in sincronia. Se inizialmente i suoni non son ben calibrati, e il lato rock appare un po’ soffocato da quello sinfonico, con il trascorrere del concerto la band (allargata a 10 elementi, con la partecipazione di fiati, archi e percussioni degli Esecutori di metallo su carta) acquisisce confidenza con il luogo ed equilibrio tra le sue varie parti, regalando un grande spettacolo. Da sempre creatori di atmosfere tangibili, i Calibro 35 stasera hanno nell’ambiente nel quale sono immersi un membro aggiuntivo di fondamentale importanza. Nella scenografia naturale che si apre alle spalle del palco, con le sue colline tipicamente toscane, prendono vita le visioni oniriche di S.P.A.C.E., così come la cavea ospita le utopie architettoniche di Decade. Quando poi gli strumenti classici lasciano maggior spazio all’essenzialità di chitarra/basso/batteria/tastiera il concerto guadagna energia e immediatezza, e risulta davvero difficile rimanere seduti sulle gradinate di pietra (Giulia Mon Amour reclama balli sfrenati!). Ma ci pensa la melodia epica della conclusiva Travelers a riportarci in questo luogo di 2000 anni fa, e a farci sentire nuovamente a nostro agio in questo perfetto intreccio di passato e presente.

From cinema to theater. Calibro 35 transport their soundtrack music onto the most noble of stages. But it is not simply a theater, but the Roman Theater of Fiesole, one of the oldest existing (end of the first century BC). If places have got a soul, this one has got one that immediately enters into harmony with the tonight music. In the presence of millennia of history Calibro 35 out on stage a representation focused on the visionary and futuristic architecture of their latest album (Decade), perfectly at ease in an ancient place like this. Geometries of curved lines (stones and notes) fusing together. 70s architectural fantasies and realities built 2000 years ago, unexpectedly in sync. If, at the beginning, sounds are not so well calibrated, and the rock side seems a bit choked by the symphonic one, with the passing of the concert the band (expanded to 10 elements, with the participation of woodwinds, strings and percussion of the Esecutori di metallo su carta) gains confidence with the place and balance between its various parts, performing a great show. Always creators of tangible atmospheres, tonight Calibro 35 have got an additional member of fundamental importance in the environment in which they are immersed. In the natural setting that behind the stage, with its typically Tuscan hills, the dreamlike visions of S.P.A.C.E. come to life, just as the cavea houses the architectural utopias of Decade. When classical instruments leave more space to the essentiality of guitar/bass/drums/keyboard, the concert gains energy and immediacy, and it is really difficult to sit on the stone steps (Giulia Mon Amour claims wild dances!). But the epic melody of the concluding Travelers takes us back to this place of 2000 years ago, making us feel at ease again in this perfect interweaving of past and present.

Uno studio di giovani architetti con base a Firenze, il Superstudio, immaginò e progettò nei primi anni ‘70 Dodici città ideali, una visione distopica in cui l’urbanizzazione moderna raggiungeva i livelli più surreali e alienanti. In questi intrecci di strutture geometriche fantascientifiche atterra oggi l’astronave dei Calibro 35. Dopo esser decollata dai bassifondi nebbiosi della Milano anni ‘70, e dopo aver intrapreso un viaggio intergalattico con l’album del 2015 (S.P.A.C.E.), la navicella raggiunge questa nuova metropoli, che potrebbe trovarsi su un pianeta sconosciuto, in una realtà parallela o nella mente di un architetto visionario di 50 anni fa. Per costruire questa città la band milanese ha concepito il suo progetto più ambizioso, facendosi aiutare dai fiati, dalle percussioni e dagli archi degli Esecutori di metallo su carta - un ensemble orchestrale che non si limita ad accompagnare la band, ma contribuisce a dare forma alla struttura profonda dei brani, fin dalle fondamenta. Ci ritroviamo in spazi inediti nei quali, libere da vincoli, le linee dell’architettura radicale italiana degli anni ‘60/’70 si trasformano in musica. I Calibro 35 scrivono una colonna sonora per ambienti di una città immaginaria, contaminando linguaggi diversi (funk, afro psichedelia, jazz, prog di Canterbury…) con fortissima personalità. Anche gli elementi meno appariscenti che colorano questa città non possono mai essere definiti arredamento, bensì design. Decade è un album sinuoso come le poltrone progettate dallo studio Archizoom, ma al tempo stesso geometrico come la teoria Modulor di Le Corbusier. Utopia e irrazionalità per una città concreta e reale, probabilmente la più affascinante progettata dalla band fino ad oggi.

Calibro 35 – Decade

In the early 70s Superstudio (an atelier of young architects based in Florence) imagined and designed Twelve Ideal Cities, a dystopian vision in which modern urbanization reached the most surreal and alienating levels. Calibro 35 spaceship now lands in these interweaving of geometric sci-fi structures. After taking off from the foggy slums of Milan in the 70s, and after having gone on an intergalactic journey with their 2015 album (S.P.A.C.E.), their spacecraft reaches this new metropolis, which could be on an unknown planet, in a parallel reality or in the mind of a visionary architect 50 years ago. To build this city the band from Milan has conceived its most ambitious project, being helped by the winds instruments, percussions and strings of the Esecutori di metallo su carta - an orchestral ensemble that not only play together with the band, but that also contributes to shape the deep structure of the songs, from their foundations. We find ourselves in unprecedented spaces in which, free from constraints, the lines of 60s/70s Italian radical architecture are transformed into music. Calibro 35 write a soundtrack for environments of an imaginary city, contaminating different languages (funk, afro psychedelia, jazz, Canterbury prog ...) with strong personality. Even the less ostentatious elements colouring this city can never be called furniture, yet design. Decade is a sinuous album like the armchairs designed by the Archizoom studio, but at the same time geometric as Le Corbusier's Modulor theory. Utopia and irrationality for a concrete and real city, probably the most fascinating designed by the band until today.

Una novantina di minuti il set. Proprio come i film degli anni '60/'70 di cui si nutrono i Calibro 35 e di cui la loro musica ha sempre più la forma. Perché la musica di questa band è sempre più colonna sonora e film al tempo stesso. La capacità evocativa ed espressiva delle loro canzoni è sempre più netta. E dal vivo questa sensazione è super-amplificata.

Il loro ultimo album, Decade, è appena uscito, e questo è il tour che lo presenta in tre settimane su e giù per la nostra penisola. Ma quella di stasera è una serata ancor più speciale, poiché è una delle tre in cui la band sale sul palco in versione "allargata". Non solo i 4 membri ufficiali (più Colliva ai suoni), ma anche sei - incredibili! - musicisti come nelle registrazioni dell'ultimo album. Il valore aggiunto di questa formazione "più più" si sente tutto, ed il concerto di stasera ne acquista in bellezza, sia dal punto di vista musicale sia da quello del coinvolgimento, dell'evento in sé.

La prima parte del lungo set (perché oltre ai 90' "ufficiali", c'è quasi un'altra mezzora dedicata ai bis richiesti a gran voce dal pubblico!) è dedicata appunto a Decade, eseguito senza soluzione di continuità fino alla sua decima traccia. L'ultima, stupenda, Travelers chiuderà la prima ora e mezzo di scaletta giacché, come dice anche Enrico Gabrielli, "tutto ha una fine". Nello iato che interrompe la continuità di questo album, una miscellanea dagli altri dischi, in cui tutte le canzoni risultano impreziosite dal contributo degli Esecutori di Metallo su Carta. E nel gran secondo finale, c'è anche spazio per le presentazioni e gli assoli di tutti i musicisti sul palco: un tocco vintage che sottolinea ancora una volta la natura retrò (eppure contemporaneissima) della band nata 10 anni fa in uno studio di registrazione in quel di Milano per rendere omaggio alle grandi colonne sonore dei film poliziotteschi e di genere made in Italy degli anni 60/70 e che poi è diventata una interessantissima realtà fatta di brani originali. Per me che in quegli anni non ero nemmeno un'idea, i Calibro 35 sono il ponte ideale fra questo presente e quel passato. Un ponte fatto di grande musica e grandi musicisti, che dal vivo è capace di trasportarti avanti ed indietro nel tempo, ma anche nello spazio, verso mondi reali e distanti, ma anche verso realtà immaginarie eppure così vicine.

Calibro 35 - 02.24.2018 - FLOG (Firenze)

Ninety minutes the set. Just like the 60s/70s movies that feed Calibro 35, whose music is increasingly getting that shape. Because the music of this band is more and more soundtrack and movie at the same time. The evocative and expressive capacity of their songs is increasingly clear. And live this feeling is super-amplified.

Their latest album, Decade, has just been released, and this is the tour presenting it in three weeks up and down our peninsula. But tonight is an even more special night, because it is one of three in which the band goes on stage in its "extended" version. Not only the 4 official members (plus Colliva mixing the sounds), but also six - incredible! - musicians as in the recordings of their brand new album. The added value of this super lineup is evident, and tonight's concert gains in beauty, both from a musical point of view and from that of involvement, of the event itself. 

The first part of the long set (because in addition to the "official" 90 minutes, there is almost another half hour dedicated to the encores loudly requested by the audience!) is dedicated to Decade, performed seamlessly up to its tenth track. The last, beautiful, Travelers will close the first hour and a half of the setlist because, as Enrico Gabrielli also says, "everything has an end". In the hiatus that interrupts the continuity of this album, a miscellany from the other records, in which all songs are embellished by the contribution of the Esecutori di Metallo su Carta. And in the second grand final, there is also time for presentations and solos of all the musicians on stage: a vintage touch that once again underlines the retro (yet very contemporary) nature of the band born 10 years ago in a recording studio in Milan to pay homage to the great soundtracks of the 60s/70s made in Italy poliziotteschi films and then became a very interesting reality made of original songs. For me that in those years I was not even an idea, Calibro 35 are the ideal bridge between this present and that past. A bridge made of great music and great musicians, able to carry you back and forth in time, but also in space, to real and distant worlds, but also to imaginary and yet so close realities.

Dopo aver girato in lungo e in largo nei bassifondi del poliziottesco, i Calibro 35 decollano verso un nuovo genere: la fantascienza. Il funky a tinte noir della band milanese assume gli allucinogeni necessari per esplorare il cosmo, senza per questo abbandonare la vitalità dei lavori precedenti. S.P.A.C.E. è ancora una volta un disco d’azione, ma questa volta gli inseguimenti non avvengono in nebbiose viuzze del centro, a bordo di un Alfa Romeo Giulia, ma tra i cieli del pianeta rosso, a bordo di improbabili astronavi retro-futuribili. Pistole laser al posto di P38, insomma. Sintetizzatori al posto di chitarre. Caldo e carico di groove (grazie anche all’attrezzatura vintage e analogica dei Toe Rag Studios di Londra dove è stato registrato), S.P.A.C.E. aggiunge psichedelia e imprevedibilità space rock (un pizzico di Gong) al classico equilibrio tra frenesia e malinconia che contraddistingue la musica della band. Brani ondeggianti e deformati come A Future Never Lived - oppure mutevoli e rifrangenti come Universe Of 10 Dimensions, o ancora macchiati di cupo jazz come Something Happened On Planet Earth - mostrano quanto i Calibro 35 siano proiettati al di là del genere, qualunque esso sia.

After a long wander through the slums of poliziottesco, Calibro 35 take off towards a new genre: sci-fi. The noir funky of the band from Milan takes the right hallucinogens to explore the cosmos, without losing the great vitality of the previous releases. S.P.A.C.E. is once again an action album, but this time chases do not take place on an Alfa Romeo Giulia through the foggy alleys of the city centre: they take place on improbable retro-futuristic spaceships through the skies of the red planet. In short, laser guns instead of P38. Synths instead of guitars. Groovy and "warm" (also thanks to the vintage analog equipment of the Toe Rag Studios in London, where the album was recorded), S.P.A.C.E. adds psychedelia and space rock unpredictability (a touch of Gong) to the classic equilibrium of frenzy and melancholy typical of the music of the band. Swaying and deformed songs as A Future Never Lived - or changing and refractive as Universe Of 10 Dimensions, or stained with gloomy jazz as Something Happened On Planet Earth - show how much Calibro 35 are projected beyond the genre, whatever it may be.

La mèta della serata è il concerto di un gruppo da colonna sonora poliziottesca…quindi inseguimenti a manetta. Ecco, non proprio: la nostra serata inizia con una fantastica ruota a terra...ironia della sorte? Aggirato in qualche modo il problema – che ci fa perdere un po’ di tempo e ci fa anche un po’ incazzare – arriviamo comunque a destinazione.

L’opening act è – purtroppo – maledettamente già in corso, ma il rock ipercinetico, rumoroso, un po’ folle de Le Capre a Sonagli fa girare le cose nel verso giusto e ci fa sbollire la seccatura del ritardo. Con il suo approccio divertente e diverito, la band combina una sezione ritmica elastica e funkeggiante con chitarre (una elettrica, una acustica) deliranti su accordi dissonanti, feedbacks e melodie sghembe. Riusciamo a sentire solo 20 minuti, ma le premesse sono ottime e speriamo quindi di vederli presto in un loro concerto ”intero”.

Terminata la pausa fra il cortometraggio ed il lungometraggio, ecco iniziare il film immaginario di cui i Calibro 35 propongono l’ideale colonna sonora. Un B-movie fantascientifico di fine anni 60/inizio anni 70, in cui i sintetizzatori rubano il ruolo cui in passato erano deputate le chitarre, pur mantenendo protagonisti basso e batteria. Quarantacinque minuti di funky psichedelico incentrati sull’ultimo album, in cui la band milanese mostra la sua splendida nuova incarnazione. Dinamico e divertente come ogni altra “pellicola” della band, S.P.A.C.E. è probabilmente ancor più ricercato e originale, con le sue atmosfere spaziali che dal vivo risultano ancor più dilatate che su vinile, e che perfettamente si innestano tra le strutture movimentate dei brani. In apertura e chiusura del primo tempo outtakes di film di genere: super-cult lo spezzone finale, tratto da Omicron di Ugo Gregoretti (1963), con l’assurdo-grottesco dialogo di due extraterrestri sulla pratica tutta umana e primitiva di “entroscucchiare”! 

Il secondo tempo è dedicato al meglio dello “spaghetti-funky” grazie al quale i Calibro 35 possono essere considerati i capofila del revival poliziottesco degli ultimi anni. Fantasiosi, coinvolgenti e vagamente noir come i migliori film di Di Leo, fanno convivere lo sguardo beffardo di Tomas Milian in Milano Odia: la Polizia non può Sparare e quello malvagio di Gian Maria Volontè in Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto con l’ironia dei film di Maurizio Merli.

Un concerto superlativo, che esalta il numeroso pubblico del The Cage e conferma i Calibro 35 come una delle migliori band in circolazione sui palchi italiani.

Calibro 35 + Le Capre a Sonagli – 03.05.2016 – The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

The destination of this night is the concert of a poliziottesco soundtrack band…so car chases at full throttle. Well, this is not exactly the case: our night starts with a flat tire indeed…ironically enough, isn’t it? Somehow we fixed the problem – a time waste which makes us feel a bit pissed-off! – and we rich the venue.

Sadly the opening act is already going on, but the hyperkinetic, noisy, a bit weird rock of Le Capre a Sonagli makes things getting better and we soon forget the hassle of the delay. Entertaining and funny, the band combines a funky, frisky rhythmic section with delirious guitars (one electric, the other acoustic) fluttering with dissonant chords, feedbacks and crooked melodies. We listen to only 20 minutes of their show, yet the premises are great and so we really hope to attend very soon to one “full” concert.

When the break between the short and the feature film is over, here it starts the imaginary movie of which Calibro 35 perform the ideal soundtrack. A late 60s/early 70s sci-fi B-movie, in which synths get the main role formerly prerogative of guitars, yet keeping bass and drums as leading actors. Forty-five minutes of psychedelic funky focused on the latest album, in which the band from Milano shows its splendid new incarnation. Dynamic and amusing as all the other “films” of the band, S.P.A.C.E.  is probably even more original and refined, with its space atmospheres which sound even more dilated in the live performance than on vinyl and that perfectly fit into the lively structure of the songs. In opening and closing of the first part, outtakes from film di genere: super-cult the final excerpt, from Omicron by Ugo Gregoretti (1963), with the grotesque/absurd dialogue between two aliens on the human, primitive use of “entroscucchiare”!

Fanciful, engaging, vaguely noir as the best movies by Di Leo, they bring together Tomas Milian’s mocking glance in Milano Odia: la Polizia non può Sparare and Gian Maria Volonté wicked eyes in Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto with the irony of Maurizio Merli’s movies.

A superb concert, exalting the large audience of The Cage and confirming Calibro 35 as one of the best bands on Italian stages nowadays.
