Nebula - 03.10.2019 - The Cage (Livorno)

Nebula - 03.10.2019 - The Cage (Livorno)

Nebula - 10.03.2019 - The Cage (Livorno)

To tell this story I begin from the end. One of those sad endings that American cinema would never have the courage to stage. After a one hour concert, Nebula return on stage mildly acclaimed by the few present and prepare themselves for the encore in a venue whose large empty spaces recall the American deserts of western movies. Eddie Glass takes his guitar, outlines a riff, but something doesn't work. He tries to understand why his amp doesn't sound like it should, he asks for help, but he gets no answer. From the depths of the Cage nobody - absolutely nobody - moves. Neither the sound engineer, nor members of the staff of the venue. Nobody. Confused, Glass wanders on stage. In a surreal silence he still asks for someone to come and give him a hand. It's like feeling vultures flying over Nebula carcass in this desert. Glass and his fellows surrender. There will be no final duel in western style. Noone comes to their rescue. The desert swallows them up and makes them disappear in general silence.

But how did this story begin? Slowly, like a relaxed ride among cacti. With unexpected slowness Nebula started their concert, jamming, letting themselves go into a natural crescendo. During the first few minutes the band had to autofocus. Then they galloped off into the sandy deserts of their stoner rock, to reach that launching tower hidden in the canyon, from which to reach the stars. The trajectory of the cosmic journey was not linear. Nor constant was the speed. Propulsive riffs pushed the spaceship to supersonic speed, but often they fragmented themselves into a dust of solos. A nebula of gas and psychedelic dust in which it is difficult to be orientes. Actually, I'd say it's wrong to look for a direction. Because Eddie Glass (now the only historical member of the band, after the departure of bassist Tom Davies) plays instinctively, without any aerospace engineering project behind him. Though Michael Amster's (former member of the psychedelics Blaak Heat) powerful and precise drums maintains the trajectory, Glass directs the spaceship looking at the moment, at the "here and now". This makes the music complex, sometimes confused, but also genuine, true, unpredictable and engaging. Just abandon yourself, and perceive the sensitivity and warmth of Glass's voice (a drunken version of Mark Arm, of Mudhoney) or the burning expressive urgency of his solos. In the end the spaceship gets lost in a storm of asteroids, and it lands in the desolate desert that I told you at the beginning of this story. A sad end, certainly, but perhaps also the most natural one, given the unpredictability of the pilot and the nonexistent spirit of collaboration (or rather, I would really say, of lack of interest) of the planet on which he landed.

All Them Witches + Swedish Death Candy - 27.04.2019 - Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

All Them Witches + Swedish Death Candy - 27.04.2019 - Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

Bella scoperta!

All Them Witches + Swedish Death Candy - 04.27.2019 - Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

All of Them Witches is the book that Rosemary Woodhouse consults to dispel any doubts about the nature of her disturbing neighbours. A book of witchcraft that surely the Nashville band, whose name is inspired by the mentioned cursed book, uses to evoke and then be possessed by spirits when performing live. The legends of those who attended their concert (Deserfest Antwerp 2017) spoke clearly, and we are gathered here tonight to confirm those stories.

Also Swedish Death Candy, openers of this evening, show some kind of possession, because their live music releases an energy that is much more contained on record. Among the amusing rock stoner riffs psychedelic melodies of rainbow colors, juicy like lysergic candies, are dripping. A drummer losing his drumsticks a couple of times per song - but without ever lowering the level of groove - shows how much surgical precision (unlike energy!) has got a relative importance in this musical genre. And the energy certainly does not lack to the London band, which in its show increases the rate of Queens of the Stone Age decreasing that of Black Angels. Great discovery!

But those who really transform themselves, compared to what they do in studio, are All Them Witches. Although their records are nothing short of extraordinary, live this trio seems to be possessed by spirits. No evil spirits though. In fact, even in the most shady and autumnal moments, their psychedelic rock is warm, enveloping, vibrant. In short: deep and lively. The spirits returned to life tonight are those of 70s psychedelic hard rock (Ben McLeod's guitar takes on the appearance of Jimmy Page's one) and 90s alternative rock (deep and wearily singsonging Charles Michael Parks Jr voice smells of Morphine). However, we are not at a seance that merely awakens the dead, but rather a real revival of the spirit of rock, in new forms. After a couple of warm-up songs (the amazing Diamonds struggles a bit to open itself), the concert literally takes off. The wall of sound raised by the three musicians is the most impressive we could expect from a stoner band, just as the creativity of the many improvised phrasings is a jungle of ideas in which even the best jamming bands would get lost and embarrassed. Not to mention the groove, constantly present even in the most suffused or dilated moments, proving how much the sense of rhythm is innate in this trio, even when they hide in a fog of noises. The legends have been confirmed: All Them Witches are the most lively and exciting band that can be found on a stage in 2019. They are the tangible manifestation of the spirit of rock. Merit of an old book of black magic?

By now High Reeper are like at home, in Cecina. They also have the front-door key and let you find pasta ready. After their concert of the first of May last year they set so well that tonight's concert is a real reunion with friends.

Greenkalma do the honours. They welcome us with their fat and greasy riffs - that smell of weed and sweat (that of Matt Pike's belly) - and with powerful Marco Lo Presti's voice, which makes its way overwhelmingly in the sandy fog raised by the band. The desert version of Rage Against the Machine is the surprise that you do not expect, but that fits well among the massive tracks of the band, which sounds even more robust and fluid compared to their concert in Castagneto Carducci at the beginning of the year.

Rancho Bizzarro are the hosts, and they put everyone at ease with a desert rock that, every time I see them at work, it always sounds more powerful and compact. There is no shortage of lysergic openings and flowing solos, but it is in the direction of Riffs, with a capital R, that the band's music is developing. Riffs that are like solid rocks inside a liquid constantly changing music. In this archipelago, Rancho Bizzarro sow quotes and tributes to their inspiring fathers, and present them to us with the naturalness of the landlord who proudly shows you his collection of the best paintings (or records!).

To close the evening, opening the last bottle, there are the American cousins (directly from Philadelphia) High Reeper. If the previous bands had brought smoking stuff, they have a good supply of alcohol with them. Their elastic groovy doom metal is soaked in beer, which makes it slippery. Impossible not to get drunk with the oblique melodies and the constantly swaying Sabbathian riffs. Their tour has just begun, but the new drummer (Justin Di Pinto) proves he has already fully entered the band's oiled gear, even if he still does not release all his frenzy. Frenzy that instead the otherscannot contain, especially Andrew Price (sinuous like his riffs) and Zach Thomas (whose voice is definitely in a better shape than a year ago). After an amazing evening with these friends, we're looking forward to being invited once again. See you next time!

There are bands you discover for the first time live at a festival and they convince you to the point of going to listen to them the next night in a venue not far from your home town. It doesn't often happen that these elements coordinate so well, but in October 2016 it happened with Deville. And when they come back to Italy after just over two years and play exactly in your town, this is one of those concerts that you can't really miss.
The amazing thing of a band like Deville is that you get to the end of the concert and you don't even realize it. Their mixture of stoner rock and heavy metal keeps the level of groove of the setlist always on the maximum power: they pass from one song to the next and you have the impression of never scaling the gears, yet of getting always higher. If the songs from Make It Belong To Us are a certainty and it's cool to find them live, the songs from the brand new Pigs With Dogs are a confirmation of the quality of the Swedish quartet and on stage they gain in power and impact. The other added value are Deville themselves, who on the small stage of the Café Albatross do not save a drop of sweat and sound like in front of the audience of great occasions. At the next meeting with the Swedes, for a new massive dose of stoner metal riffs.

Pontiak – 09.03.2019 – Colorificio Kroen (Verona)

Pontiak – 09.03.2019 – Colorificio Kroen (Verona)

Pontiak – 03.09.2019 – Colorificio Kroen (Verona)

The lack of oxygen alters the perception more than any psychedelic music does. In a place chock-a-block with sweaty people, even the most fat riffs liquefy. The sandy fuzz of Van Carney's guitar makes Pontiak riffs incandescent, letting evaporate any residual liquid. Stunned I sway, I do not know whether for the hypnotic power of music or for extreme environmental conditions. It is difficult to remain lucid in this fog of slow pace and lack of air. Difficult to fully appreciate a concert. As long as riffs draw rocky canyons and desolate landscapes, I am enraptured by the music of the three Carney brothers, despite Lain's drums doesn't sound as smooth as on record and Van's voice hardly rises itself above the fuzzy fog, if not when assisted by that of his brothers. And live Pontiak choruses are really wonderful and moving! In the encore, however, the Carney family indulges in distinctly American songs (sort of Lynyrd Skynyrd reinterpreted by the Black Mountains) and unfortunately the effect tends to be sleep-inducing rather than dreamlike. At the end of the concert I admit that my greatest desire is to go outside to finally be able to breathe. I miss that air full of the stunning and magnificent sound of Dialectic of Ignorance (amazing the few songs in tonight setlist), literally swept away by the suffocating absence of oxygen tonight. Such a pity!

Naxatras - III

Naxatras – III
(self released, 2018)

Naxatras – III
(self released, 2018)

In 2018, with the renewed interest in Cosmos aroused by the recent scientific missions on Mars, the - spiritual and explicitly vintage - explorations of the Universe made by Naxatras sound rather strange. Yet the Greek band manages to penetrate the depths of Space through a primordial energy developed in an instinctive way, without the use of cutting-edge technology or a rational scientific method. Of course, the origin is to be found in the the late 60s / early 70s Western psychedelic hard rock, but the sensitivity with which the sound matter is processed has oriental references, as if for this band the studies of Vedic astrology were more relevant than those of physics. In the desert atmospheres of their songs there is all the aridity of that New Mexico in which the most famous flying saucer of the recent era should have crashed. Or rather, to remain in the musical field, of that Palm Desert in which the most famous generator parties of the stoner era took place. In the spiral arpeggios, overflowing with echoes, it seems to perceive the contours of the crop circles in the English countryside translated into music by Ozric Tentacles' acid trips. And in the last tracks of the album there are melancholic reflections halfway between the Space imagined by Pink Floyd and the inner one of dream pop. The fluidity with which songs flow, without these being cleaned of sand and dust, smells of spirituality free from rational constraints. A new way of imagining the desert of Mars (and what it represents) that elevates Naxatras to one of the most fascinating psychedelic realities currently in circulation.

If the self-produced, and self-titled, EP released at the end of 2018 had fascinated the ears to the stoner sound lovers and also to those who have spent their adolescence arm in arm with grunge, live Greenkalma have made it clear that the enthusiasm had been well placed and that the best part was out of the digital support. And if the 5 instrumental tracks of the EP did not leave the impression of the lack of vocals, it must be said that the add of Marco Lo Presti to the line-up certainly marked an interesting evolution in the sound of the Tuscan band. In the setting of a small pub, with the instruments and amplifiers literally held in the arms of the audience, Greenkalma overheated the atmosphere and dragged the listeners to Palm Desert at the turn of the '90s and the '00s. Sounds directly from the amps, and system only for the voice and the kick drum. Everything came out powerful: from the robust rhythm section of Kyussian memory to the guitar riffs shaped with the same dust. Irrepressible Marco Lo Presti on the microphone, both for the stage presence, and for the excellent vocal lines, built from scratch in a short time. You just have to follow the new 4-element course, and wait for the next live!

Orange Goblin – The Wolf Bites Back

Orange Goblin – The Wolf Bites Back
(Candlelight Records, Spinefarm Records, 2018)

Lemmy è vivo e lotta insieme a noi. O almeno insieme a Ben Ward.

Orange Goblin – The Wolf Bites Back
(Candlelight Records, Spinefarm Records, 2018)

Lemmy is alive and fights with us. Or at least together with Ben Ward. The house of the Orange Goblin singer is probably equipped with a votive temple in honour of Mr. Kilmister, from which he certainly took inspiration to honour his ancestor in the ninth studio album of his Orange Goblin. Explicitly dedicated to Motorhead members who are no longer among us, a song like Renegade is its clear demonstration (as well as the collaboration with Phil Campbell in a couple of songs). But in addition to his ancestors, Ben has a deep admiration for his disciples, to the point of being inspired by Red Fang with the muddy stoner of Sons of Salem and Swords of Fire. Ben has always been careful to absorb the spirit of the time in which he lives, without forgetting his origins. That's how he built the personality of his band, which since the second half of the 90s is one of the cornerstones of that sound moving on the edge between stoner and heavy metal, between ancient and modern. With another massive mani-sided album (we pass from the purely hardcore rash of Suicide Division to the fluid psychedelic blues riffs of The Stranger) the London band confirms to know and to know how to manipulate every element constituting the heavy material, from its most wet and psychedelic to the driest, compact, explicitly metal ones.

Zippo - Ode To Maximum (Reissue)

Zippo - Ode To Maximum (Reissue)
(Spikerot Records, 2018)

Zippo - Ode To Maximum (Reissue)
(Spikerot Records, 2018)

In 2006 I also had a band. The second demo recently released, I was sending it to various webzines for opinions and reviews. Among others, I also sent it to Davide Straccione, Zippo singer. Precisely in the same year Zippo released their first album - Ode To Maximum - and I asked Davide to send me a copy of their cd (accompanied by a note in which he hoped that I liked the record, and he promised that he would have carefully listened to my demo, and then reviewed it). If I liked Zippo debut album? For sure, and so much! And it was only the first - but already significant - step of a band that then released other 3 albums, always in continuous growth and evolution, driven by a constant stylistic and musical research, always extremely personal. Almost 13 years have passed since the release of Ode To Maximum, and after about a decade of soldout, now the debut album is reissued by Spikerot Records, with a new awesome artwork (by Davide Mancini - Dartworks) , and for the first time on vinyl. Not only. The tracklist is enriched by two bonus (Night Jam #2, alternative/distorted version of the fifth track, recorded at the time of The Road To Knowledge, and July, Slo Burn cover), and the mastering has been entrusted to Tony Reed (Mos Generator, Stone Axe). Songs are not revolutionized by remastering, yet enriched in the depth and groove of the sounds, and of some passages in particular. A new sound that enhances both the structure and construction of the pieces, as well as the versatility, beauty and power of the vocal lines. But another extremely interesting and important aspect of this reissue is that if on one hand it gives the possibility to know where Zippo came from for whom never owned Ode To Maximum (and maybe never even heard it), from another side it offers the opportunity to those who (like me) has always known them to dust off and rediscover this album, and to notice how much it is still relevant today and how much it contains within it many of the seeds later developed. Because if Zippo's debut is a perfect stoner rock album and a song like The Elephant March is an amazing stoner doom/heavy psych piece (so overwhelming as to be still the closing of their concerts), Night Jam has got an almost progressive breath, and Tsunami Dust a grunge, decidedly 90s, attitude. Not to mention S.n.a.p.r.s.t. that in the whirlwind of its heavier and more aggressive parts it even finds space for almost jazz openings. All these seeds were there thirteen years ago, they have developed and transformed through The Road To Knowledge (2009), Maktub (2011) and After Us (2016), and there are still now listening to this deluxe reissue: fundamental and essential roots of a band that has grown up and continues to extend and develop its many branches.

Electric Wizard + Ufomammut + Humulus – 18.11.2018 – Live Club (Trezzo sull’Adda, MI)

Electric Wizard + Ufomammut + Humulus – 18.11.2018 – Live Club (Trezzo sull’Adda, MI)

Electric Wizard + Ufomammut + Humulus – 11.18.2018 – Live Club (Trezzo sull’Adda, MI)

I love Electric Wizard and Ufomammut as if they were my elder brothers. I grew up with their music, and at the same time, they grew up before my eyes. They opened my eardrums to new sounds and gave me indispensable advice (especially with regard to unmissable b-movies... certainly not to pick girls up, since their music is not the most suitable for the purpose). Being together with both, tonight, is a dutiful thanks to them, and for this reason I decide to be present in Trezzo sull'Adda despite the concerts of Dark Buddha Rising and Fuoco Fatuo in Bologna and Kikagaku Moyo in Ravenna.

The first to get on the imposing Live Club stage are the hosts Humulus. Their stoner rock drenched in grunge melodies is the perfect starter before tonight's meaty bits. A little excited for the responsibility of warming up the audience waiting for the legends of the genre, but they are doing very well, alternating sandy huge riffs, psychedelic arpeggios and warm engaging vocal melodies. The road taken is the right one (as evidenced by the latest album Reverently Heading into Nowhere) in order to rival the older brothers in the future.

Ufomammut let me enter their bedroom to make me feel how the low frequencies make the walls tremble. Dazzling psychedelic films to amplify the stunning effect of music. They assure me that they did not fix my beer with any drugs... or maybe they say that just because they're afraid I could say something to mom?! I do not understand why glasses does not shatter under the gummy waves of distortion, which swells in a cloud of noise to fill every space, and from which only Vita robust drums manage to emerge, to show us rhythm and structure in the sound chaos. The most physical and groovy Ufomammut concert among those I attended to (and they are 7!). A band that looks into the eyes its audience with the self-confidence of those who have collected what they deserve, but also with the humility of those who feel that there is always room to learn even now. How not love a brother like that?

Then in the really doped brother's room, Electric Wizard. The one mom fears I would take as an example. Feedbacks introducing Witchcult Today riff (and that will accompany every moment of "silence", like a constant tinnitus induced by music listened to exaggerated volumes) are dense smoke of marijuana, through which I see clips of old horror, post apocalyptic or sex exploitation movies. After 25 years of continuous line-up changes, it's extraordinary to hear how Jus Oborn's band still sounds compact and overwhelming. Over time, a layer of dust (of hidden origin) covered the vomit with which the band had soiled its room between the late 90s and early 2000s, but the toxic moments continue to surface between a riff and the other. Spots of heavy psychedelia stain with acid colours the intense black of the sepulchral doom played by the band, as visionary fragments in a 60s horror movie. Far from being detoxified, the music of the electric big brother is so powerful and cohesive - even in the manipulation of dissonances and larsen effects - to seem, today, fully able to control his excesses. And thanks to perfectly balanced sounds, he gives me as a present one of his best concerts (tonight the fifth!).

Mr. Bison - 26.10.2018 - Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Mr. Bison - 26.10.2018 - Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Mr. Bison - 10.26.2018 - Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Finally I listen to Mr. Bison playing the new album. A series of unfortunate coincidences had always made me miss the appointment, but luckily this time I succeed in my aim. The setlist is focused on Holy Oak and this proves to be a winning choice. Because if Asteroid is a good album, the last work of the three Matteo is definitely a leap forward for what concerns both the composition and the evolution of the band itself. Not only that. What strikes me the most is how awesome the new songs are when played live. If listening to the record you can appreciate the complexity of the construction and the style mixing that has led to push the accelerator on more psych sounds and solutions with a 70s aftertaste, live the new songs give their best, releasing a power that in the recordings has remained trapped in the grooves of the vinyl. The title-track itself vibrates with an intensity that is present on the record, but as with the mute. And if drums confirm to be Mr. Bison pillar - and not only from a rhythmic point of view -, the two guitars are two forges of both groove and atmosphere. The power trio formula proves once again to be the winning one: the band from Cecina has made it more and more its own and on stage it shows its maturity as much in the riffs as in the sound impact, gaining incisiveness and power.

Rinunci a Satana? - Blerum Blerum

Rinunci a Satana? - Blerum Blerum
(Wallace Records, Il Verso del Cinghiale, Edison Box, E io pago! Records, 2018)

Rinunci a Satana? - Blerum Blerum
(Wallace Records, Il Verso del Cinghiale, Edison Box, E io pago! Records, 2018)

The cover of the new album by Rinunci a Satana? (work of the always masterful SoloMacello) describes in pictures all that we find inside it. (Passed) through a dense forest of 70s blues rock, well contaminated by mushrooms with undoubted psychedelic strength, we are faced with - and in the middle of - dusty sprawls, with the warm taste of a sun-drenched desert, but at dusk, when a more intimate light and a more personal gait cover everything with a more suffused and sometimes almost progressive atmosphere (especially La Serata del Gourmet). But we are not faced with a flat annihilating landscape. We are not inert and stunned. The trip is on the back of a steed running behind Damiano Casanova guitar, blindly obeying to the call of Marco Mazzoldi drums. We are on the set of a western (a beautiful 60s Italian western, but also one of those with a strong ironic vein): we go through canyons, we bivouac in ghost villages next to abandoned mines, we arrive in a saloon where cowboy, dozed Mexicans, tipsy Indians and the classic winky beauties live side by side. There is time for a fiery duel and an attack against a stagecoach. But there is also the time to waste around a bonfire or under the dusty porch of a shack in an old ranch, with a bourbon in hand (as in Salice Mago). There is no need of words to describe this trip to the Rocky Mountains: just some slightly distorted and reverberated choruses in Chi sta scavando?, which are a sort of an extra instrument rather than a real vocal track. The beauty of this album is also in its natural ability to tell a story only through the power of music and its manifold twists. We do not renounce Satan: let abandon ourselves to his call and let ourselves be carried on this journey, which smells of vintage, but absolutely does not stink of nostalgia!
