L'intro futuristica di Cowboys from Hell - un riff tirato che sale da un surreale flanger e sfocia in un suono super-compresso - annuncia la rivoluzione. Come un fulmine a ciel sereno, tutt'ad un tratto i Pantera reinventano la musica pesante. Distrutto il loro passato - caratterizzato da sonorità hard rock e street glam - i Pantera iniziano anche a distruggere l'heavy metal anni '80 per poi ricrearlo. L'affilatezza di Judas Priest e la pesantezza dei Metallica ci sono ancora, ma l'approccio è diretto come mai prima d'ora. L'heavy metal è ripulito dall'enfasi epica e ciò che resta è rabbia ed energia in pura attitudine hardcore. I riff meccanici e le ritmiche "stop and go" creano una musica carica di tiro che si abbina perfettamente alla voce multiforme di Phil Anselmo: penetrante come quella di uno screamer, profonda come quella di un crooner, furiosa ed incazzata come quella di un ragazzetto hardcore. I Pantera ed il loro produttore Terry Date creano un suono nuovo che si rivelerà essere il punto di partenza della musica pesante degli anni '90.

Futuristic Cowboys from Hell intro - a groovy riff that rises from a surreal flanger effect to a hyper-compressed sound - announces the revolution. As a lightning, Pantera reinvent heavy music in a while. Destroyed their past - characterized by street glam and hard rock sounds - Pantera begin to destroy also 80s heavy metal in order to recreate it. Judas Priest sharpness and Metallica heaviness are still here,  but the approach is direct as never before. Heavy Metal is cleaned from epic emphasis, and what remains is rage and energy in hardcore attitude. Mechanical riffs and “stop and go” rhythmic create a groovy music that fits perfectly with multiform Phil Anselmo voice: penetrating as a screamer’s one, deep as a crooner’s one, furious as a pissed off hardcore boy’s one. Pantera and producer Terry Date create a new sound that will be the starting point of heavy music of the nineties.

Sembra impossibile equilibrare cervello, muscoli, pancia e cuore nella musica pesante. Basando la sua essenza sugli estremi, infatti, spesso si ritrova ad esaltare uno di questi aspetti, rinnegando gli altri. Gli Evilgroove riescono invece a far convivere anime apparentemente contrastanti dimostrando una forte personalità.

Se la copertina del loro disco d'esordio - Cosmosis - e l'intro ipnotico della traccia d'apertura - Turn Your Head - richiamano la ricercatezza stilistica del metal progressivo di stampo psichedelico della band capitanata da Maynard Keenan (sensazione confermata nel corso dell'album dal basso liquido che si arrampica sulle ritmiche cerebrali della batteria), i riff grassi e rotondi della chitarra hanno il cuore negli Stati Uniti del Sud, tanto cari alle band di un altro Keenan: Pepper.

Partendo dall'America rurale (o dalla nebbia della Val Padana!), la band bolognese si avventura in viaggi mentali, in un futuro fantascientifico. Bottiglia di whiskey alla mano, va incontro agli alieni. La voce di Fraz è quella del pilota dell'astronave: americano con cappello da cowboy in testa e chewing gum in bocca, sorta di Phil Anselmo che segue le melodie sghembe degli Alice in Chains. Il groove (come si intuisce dal nome della band) è il carburante che spinge l'astronave, la quale non rischia mai di andare in riserva di energia, neanche nei passaggi più atmosferici o più complessi. Anche quando la distorsione, solitamente robusta, lascia spazio a melodie orientaleggianti, c'è sempre una sezione ritmica dinamica che tiene in fermento le orecchie dell'ascoltatore. 

Lo stoner metal del quartetto bolognese riesce a suonare asciutto, potente, diretto e senza fronzoli nonostante la complessità di alcuni passaggi, dimostrando quanto la miscela dei contrasti sia perfettamente equilibrata. Dieci canzoni che si stampano in mente fin da subito, reclamando il pulsante Play alla fine di ogni ascolto.

Evilgroove - Cosmosis

The balance of brain, muscles, stomach and heart seems impossible in heavy music. Grounding its essence on the extremes, indeed, it often finds itself exalting one of these aspects, denying others. Evilgroove, instead, provide a combination of seemingly conflicting souls showing a strong personality. 

If the cover of their debut album - Cosmosis - and the hypnotic intro of the opening track - Turn Your Head - recall the psychedelic progressive metal of the band captained by Maynard Keenan (feeling which is strenghtned in the whole album by the liquid sound of the bass climbing on the brainy rhythms of the drum), the mighty guitar riffs have got their heart in the Southern U.S. so dear to the band of another Keenan: Pepper.

Departing from rural America (or from the fog of the Po Valley!), the band from Bologna ventures into mental journeys, into a sci-fi future. Whiskey bottle in one hand, they meet the aliens. Fraz voice is that of the pilot of the spaceship: the American with cowboy hat on his head and chewing gum in his mouth, sort of Phil Anselmo following Alice in Chains crooked tunes. The groove (as you can easily imagine from the name of the band) is the fuel that drives the spaceship, which is not likely to ever go into reserves of energy, even in the more atmospheric or complex passages. Even when the (usually robust) distortion leaves room for oriental melodies, there is always a dynamic rhythmic section that keeps buzzing the ears of the listener.

The stoner metal of the quartet from Bologna succeeds in sounding dry, powerful, direct and no-nonsense despite the complexity of some passages, showing how much the blending of contrasts is perfectly balanced. Ten songs that are printed in mind right from the outset, claiming the Play button at the end of each listening.
