Cynic - Focus

Cynic - Focus
(Roadrunner Records, 1993)

Cynic - Focus
(Roadrunner Records, 1993)

In Florida, at the beginning of the 90s, in the middle of death metal explosion, a teenage band tried to deconstruct death metal and to reform it in a liquid  and changing entity.  Chuck Schuldiner was fascinated by these guys, and he decided to involve two of them in the construction of Human, a masterpiece of progressive death metal. Then, in 1993, Cynic published their debut album, an incredible step forward for the entire metal scene, obviously misunderstood at that time.  Focus is a progressive rock album, in its most genuine exence. Beyond every convention, Focus explores spiritual dimensions with originality, both in lyrical and in musical aspects. Songs structure is cerebral and twisted, melodies are fluid and emotional, and solos are amazing, with their jazz fusion taste. King Crimson’s fractal music was here reborn in a metal form.

Bloodbath – The Arrow of Satan is Drawn

Bloodbath – The Arrow of Satan is Drawn
(Peaceville, 2018)

Bloodbath – The Arrow of Satan is Drawn
(Peaceville, 2018)

Time has done justice to that sound coming from the dark forest of the first Entombed record. The sound of a dense sticky substance that used to fall into the abyss creating echoes capable of awakening Cthulhu. Rough, dirty, visceral, simply obtained with the distortion of the Boss (the HM2) pushed to its maximum level. After years in which that sound was disowned by most metal musicians, in search of the most compressed and square distortion possible, it came back from the bowels of the Earth. But to make a death metal record great that magical sound smelling of mud and rotting guts it is not enough. It is necessary that those ones using it compose riffs that can awaken the dead and make them walk among us. Maybe someone who knows how to colour the carnage of black melodies. In short, we need Anders Nyström. A guitarist who manages to combine a gothic sensibility with the old school fury and the 80s horror splatter atmospheres, even if at a first hearing it appears hidden at the bottom of a lake of blood. Thanks also to Nick Holmes (Paradise Lost) bark, Bloodbath - which also include Jonas Renkse (Katatonia ) and the drummer Martin Axenrot (Opeth) - exceed the sum that we would expect from the individual parts, at least as regards Katatonia and Opeth of the last albums (certainly not the still amazing Paradise Lost!). Thanks to the HM2, able to awaken that Cthulhu lurking in these old metalheads.

Behemoth - I Loved You at Your Darkest

Behemoth – I Loved You at Your Darkest
(Nuclear Blast, 2018)

We Are the Next 1000 Years).

Behemoth – I Loved You at Your Darkest
(Nuclear Blast, 2018)

Poland is one of the bastions of the Catholic religion, which in this nation has a very high specific weight from both a social and a political point of view. There could be no more fertile ground than this for the birth and development of Behemoth, one of the most explicit bands in expressing their reaction to the power of the Church. To do this, their leader (Adam Michał "Nergal" Darski) has used the same weapons as his "enemy", namely a constantly and growing attempt to evangelize his audience. The boundary between Heaven and Hell is so evanescent in the band's music, and often the two antithetical kingdoms overlap. Listening to the latest album, I Loved You at Your Darkest, you can realize that theirs is the proposal of an alternative spirituality, and not a simple fight against the Christian one. Theatrical and full of pathos both in the most violent outbursts and in the most disturbing dissonances, Behemoth music is a liturgy that seems to cross the darkness in search of light. In the children's chorus introducing the album (sort of Another Brick in the Wall in metal key) we are faced with white voices that spit deep black. A black into which Nergal invites us to enter, to attend a religious ceremony that will prove to be a real spiritual journey. We will be baptized in the muddy water, and then we will face the abysses of the stormy black metal (Wolves ov Siberia) and the mysterious places of the gothic metal (Bartzabel), until the crucifixion of the idols and the awareness of our freedom (We Are the Next 1000 Years). Catholic iconography and liturgy are overturned in a grand ceremony, full of choruses and complex arrangements, at the end of which one can only be a believer or an atheist. There is no middle way.

Sepultura - Arise

Sepultura - Arise
(Roadrunner Records, 1991)

Sepultura - Arise
(Roadrunner Records, 1991)

Arise is the point of equilibrium in Sepultura career. Highest peak of death/thrash metal sounds of the band, it is also the beginning of a deep research of Brazilian tribal atmospheres and rhythms. The result is a masterpiece, evil as Slayer thrash metal, muddy as Obituary death metal, dirty as Amebix crust punk, "spiritual" as a dark tribal rite. Roadrunner label had big expectations, therefore the album was recorded at Morrisound Recording in Tampa (first time Sepultura recorded an album outside Brazil), one of the epicenters of death metal revolution. Arise contributed to the revolution with an innovative sound, far from American, English and Swedish ones.  Arise is dusty as hands digging in the earth, in search of roots, far from a surface dominated by apocalyptic visions. A riot act against an unfair and violent reality.

Death - Human

Death - Human
(Relativity, 1991)

Death - Human
(Relativity, 1991)

Turning point of extreme music, Human is released while death metal was exceeding underground borders. Once again, the way undertaken by Schuldiner is a step beyond everyone else’s. Devastating walls of sounds, violent rage explosions and sick atmospheres are not the purpose but the means to express Schuldiner’s existentialism. The music is contorted and cerebral, as questions about human condition expressed by the growl of the singer. Masvidal, Di Giorgio and Reinert contribute to mould a progressive metal masterpiece, as demonstrated in psychedelic experience of instrumental Cosmic Sea, the abyss of the album. Death frontal assaults are interiorized through a lacerating suffering, as they are directed to the same source that generates them.

Paradise Lost – The Plague Within

Paradise Lost – The Plague Within
(Century Media, 2015)

Mai, però, i Paradise Lost avevano suonato così diretti e impetuosi.

ParadiseLost – The Plague Within
(Century Media, 2015)

The fountain of eternal youth. Paradise Lost drunk its water, recovering their lost paradise. Gradually back to the path of their death/doom beginnings, gothic metal fathers suddenly come back to their adolescence with unmanageable strength thanks to a massive muscular album like The Plague Within. But it is undeniable that the many experiences collected in more than a quarter of a century of career are certainly not lost. Sensitivity for romantic melodies does not fade behind mastodontic riffs, just as Nick Holmes clean voice is not overwhelmed by his angry growl - which here comes back protagonist as it has not been for years. Though Paradise Lost had never been so direct and impetuous. In a young and strong body, the mature mind creates an album which looks forward and is never nostalgically anchored to the past. From the first (exciting!) riff of No Hope In Sight to the epic and tragic crescendo of Return to the Sun, through the oppressive and funereal pace of Beneath Broken Earth or the devastating one of Flesh from Bones, each song runs like an overflowing - emotional - river, swamping everything it finds along its path. Moments of reflection nest in the romantic interweavings drawn by the phrasings of the two guitars, but even the most meditative moments have got a strength and determination that would never be expected by musicians for so many years on the scene. A rebirth, under a dress that is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating ever worn by the band.

Paradise Lost - Medusa

Paradise Lost - Medusa
(Nuclear Blast, 2017)

Pietrificati.

Paradise Lost - Medusa
(Nuclear Blast, 2017)

Petrified. Medusa's paralyzing gaze becomes flesh in the heavy oppressive riffs of Paradise Lost fifteenth album, and immobilises us with slow rhythms and mastodontic distortions. A magnetic and nihilistic look lettings us face the depressing reality of a meaningless universe. True to his romantic ideals, the band from Halifax struggles not to cross the Gorgon's gaze (sometimes relying on ancient pagan gods, sometimes through a dogged tension towards the absolute), but the attempt is destined to fail (after all, it is a band faithful to its doom ideals). Greg Mackintosh & co put into music this titanic clash between cosmic impotence and desire for deliverance through the irrational with the most extreme album they ever conceived, a return to the death/doom metal origins where distressing exhaustion and overwhelming power coexist. On the one hand, burial atmospheres, overwhelming riffs, melancholy phrasings and growl coming from the afterworls, on the other a immense vital energy. After the rebirth, through The Plague Within (2015), Paradise Lost close a circle, returning to the atmosphere of the early 90s, yet with a strenght and passion that are sons of the present.

Death - Spiritual Healing

Death - Spiritual Healing
(Combat, 1990)

Death - Spiritual Healing
(Combat, 1990)

In heavy metal, evolution is usually misunderstood. It is often considered as a betrayal. Abandoning teenage rebellion is a mortal sin, and becoming adult is considered as a way to be identical to the society once criticized. Spiritual Healing - one of the most important album in Death evolution - is obviously the most underrated. Not so rough as Leprosy, it abandons horror thematic and visceral violence for a more subtle melodic research, with increasing complexity in songs structure. James Murphy murky solos enrich funereal songs characterized by tempo changes and a lot of riffs, as a death metal version of …And Justice for All. The result is not yet so fluent, original and “progressive” as Human will then be, and so Spiritual Healing is not understood even by Death fans who don’t realize the historical value of a great album such this: a milestone in Death musical growth, despite some minor imperfections.

Obituary - Cause of Death

Obituary - Cause of Death
(Roadrunner Records, 1990)

Meravigliosamente orripilante.

Obituary - Cause of Death
(Roadrunner Records, 1990)

John Tardy's inhuman gurgling is the essence of primordial death metal. Crude, bestial, shocking and funny as a 80s splatter film. Crystalline, fluent, melodic, technically exemplary and capable of drawing misty atmospheres, James Murphy's solo guitar is the soul of the evolution of the genre in the immediate future. With Murphy's insertion (he had just left Death), Obituary enriches the monstrous heaviness of their songs with an atmospheric depth and evocative ability that will make Cause of Death (their second album) a key chapter in the book of the history of metal. Helped by the work of Scott Burns in the studio, the Tampa band swells up its distortion until it swallows up every space, proving how extreme music can still be defined as such while slowing down the metronome. There is no shortage of hurricanes at full speed, but often riffs - asphyxiating and oppressive - crash down on the ground, impacting on a thundering double bass drum. Sticky guitars are like moving sands (of mud), and Tardy rattles seem to come from the depths of a damp dark cave. The cover of Celtic Frost Circle of the Tyrants is the icing on the cake. A cake barfed by a bunch of guys who had indigestion of gore movies. Wonderfully spine-chilling.

Entombed - Left Hand Path

Entombed - Left Hand Path
(Earache, 1990)

Melodie cupe (perfettamente rappresentate dallo splendido artwork), visioni splatter e violenza adolescenziale.

Entombed - Left Hand Path
(Earache, 1990)

Teenage rage, the wish to shock and a great will of having fun. With these assumptions, in the second half of the 80’s, in Stockholm, a small but creative scene was born. Teenage band like Nihilist and Carnage started to play heavy music with hardcore attitude. Their music remained underground, but it layed the foundations of an innovative sound. Entombed (arisen from Nihilist ashes) published their debut in 1990, maturing the ideas of the entire scene. Left Hand Path is a sludgy boulder dominated by a strange guitar sound full of medium frequencies, a dirty and fat death metal album, suffocating and oppressive as a Lovecraft story, frightening and funny as an horror b-movie. Grim melodies (perfectly represented by the wonderful artwork), splatter visions and teenage violence.

Inter Arma - Paradise Gallows

Inter Arma - Paradise Gallows
(Relapse Records, 2016)

Mare in tempesta.

(Relapse Records, 2016)

I see myself as a teacher of art history or literature, bringing Paradise Gallows as an example of the 19th Century Romanticism. Above all I imagine the faces of the students, face to face with ultra-heavy riffs, obsessive annihilating rhythms, primordial growl ... all stuff reminding Morbid Angel at the times of Domination more than a "classical" artistic current. Yet, however extravagant, I think this comparison is not overly crazy. Indeed, from the first minutes of the opening song, through a split-guitars phrasing reminiscent of the intro of an Iron Maiden album, Inter Arma suggest a sensibility other than the extreme metal to which they refer to. From those 2 minutes of music, soon transforming into a devastating metal sludge, one perceives what the cover of Orion Landau beautifully explicates.

Stormy sea. A ship adrift, near the crash on a rocky cliff. Hanging on the master tree, the captain seems to observe the defeat with his eyes fixed on the Sun - low on the horizon, colouring the sky. That hypnotic attraction that a man - now defeated - proves towards the primordial and incontinable energy of Nature. An energy that musically takes the free and uncontrollable form of songs with a progressive structure, flowing in all imaginable directions (thanks to a dynamic, though violent, drummer) with superhuman strength (gigantic guitars and a singer whose grunts are shaped by an ocean of echoes and reverbs). Inter Arma conceived an album full with tension to the absolute, representing the Apocalypse as the only way to annihilate and escape from reality, sort of psychedelic passage to another dimension. This way, the band resigns from the road drawn by many post metal bands, pointing to a personal path where extreme metal viscerality and melodic progressive rock coexist and complement each other.

Most students would make me turn away from teaching, I know. Unfortunately, there are no more metalhead kids as before, excited to listen to 70 minutes of sound violence. Fortunately there are still musicians like Inter Arma, who use that shocking violence with a sensitivity worthy of a Work of Art.

Black Breath - Slaves Beyond Death

Black Breath - Slaves Beyond Death
(Southern Lord, 2015)

Black Breath - Slaves Beyond Death
(Southern Lord, 2015)

First instruction for use: play Slaves Beyond Death vinyl at 45 rpm, otherwise you would have the impression of listening to a sludge album instead of a death metal one. Second instruction for use: do not be surprised if listening to this music at 45 rpm it would be evident how much sludge metal have learned from the very first death metal. After all we are talking about old school death metal, something raw and primitive in which bones-grinding riffs face cavernous slowdowns whose depth is amplified by lowered tuning. Fast, often devastating, rhythmics sometimes turn into ultra-heavy hammer blows. Embedded within the walls of muddy distortions, melodies sound dissonant and putrid. Together with the throaty guttural voice, all these are distinctive features of the early death metal before it directed itself towards surgical precision and prog melodic ambitions (these last reinterpreted by Black Breath in the final Chains of the Afterlife – a dissonant acid instrumental track showing how much this band is able to make visceral even the most majestic side of the genre). Produced by Kurt Ballou (Converge), the third full-lenght of this Seattle band is an extraordinary return to the origins, a reinterpretation of the early works by Obituary, Death and Entombed in the light of the sludge hurricane of these last years. An album with all the potential to last over time, as the masterpieces of its inspiring fathers.

With its post-apocalyptic reinterpretation of the most peculiar progressive death metal, Derivae got a place in my heart from the very first listening. So I could not wait to attend to a Nero di Marte concert, to seize the beauty of their music in a live show. Lost the chance to listen to them with Gorguts in Brescia, their show at the Freakout Club in Bologna became compulsory to me!

Freakout is one of those small venues with a lo-fi and very cozy appearance (and really underground, being almost underneath an overpass) that have got a special appeal to me. Especially when they highlight the value of the bands on stage thanks to outstanding sounds and impact.

Opener Juggernaut are a great revelation. I have to admit that I knew their name more than their music…so I also have to admit that I blamed my self for this lack! The band from Roma really impressed me a lot. Not only for the incredible energy flowing out of the amps, making their complex songs immediate and overwhelming. Not only for the sounds of all the instruments, extremely refined and wonderfully balanced. What fascinates me above any other thing is their music. Prog metal roots insinuate themselves into post hardcore weaves and get fragmented into jazz and bossa nova rhythms. The shock wave of sludge. The soundtrack visual taste of the Italian cinema of some decades ago (see Elio Petri and a certain “poliziottesco”). The whole in only 40 minutes. It may seems incredible or exaggerated, yet these are the real impressions and feelings their concert aroused in me.

Sounds change, there is a voice from the depths of somewhere, and I find myself immersed in Nero di Marte. Technically flawless, they fascinate me especially for the amazing drums – a war machine with surgical precision – and Sean Worrel vocals – always wracked, screamed and extremely powerful from the first to the last note. Death metal that fishes into the sea of post hardcore and – at times – of sludge, combined with a research of sounds and musical solutions that reminds me of Cynic and Gorguts, the live of the quartet from Bologna confirms them as one of the most interesting Italian (and not only!) metal bands. With more “restrained” and introverted tones, even the new stuff – presented for the first time in this concert – hits the target and lets foretaste a new album which could be the evolution of the two forerunners.

Peculiar – and particularly successful – union of two Italian bands that have their North Star in musical and sound research and experimentation.

Novembre + Shores of Null + Black Therapy – 09.04.2016 (Traffic Club – Roma)

Novembre + Shores of Null + Black Therapy – 09.04.2016 (Traffic Club – Roma)

Novembre + Shores of Null + Black Therapy – 04.09.2016 (Traffic Club – Roma)

The event is one of those that can not be missed: Novembre, on the stage again after almost a decade, in their home town Rome, performing the new released URSA. Furthermore Shores of Null are going to play tonight: I have almost consumed their debut album in the last year and half, but I have not yet been able to listen to them live.

The evening is opened by Black Therapy. They are from Rome as well, and they immediately bring us on the shores of those sounds which are going to characterize this night. Their melodic death metal is a great prelude to the following two bands: with their melancholic solos, the shadowy atmospheres of their songs are made sharp by the stinging riffs of the guitars and the scratching growl of Giuseppe Massimiliano di Giorgio. In the set list there are also new songs (still unreleased), but the end of their show is a really successful and revolutionized cover of Tears for Fears Mad World. Given the youth of the band and the oomph unleashed on stage, the hope is that we are going to hear about them soon again.

Shores of Null start with three songs from Quiescence, but tonight they also perform some of the new pieces – already recorded, but unreleased – written for the second album. The beauty and power of the already known tracks gain even more depth and substance when performed on stage. And the new ones let you know that the second album is going to be the worthy heir of its forerunner. The listener is enveloped by an actual sonic wave and surrenders himself to its embrace. Clearly evident even in recordings, in live shows the peculiar non-exclusively-metal background of Shores of Null members results to be a quid pluris which adds both atmosphere and heaviness to their music. Naturally switching from a deep, expressive growl to never banal clean vocal lines, Davide Straccione’s ductile voice is for sure another ace in the hole of the band. We just have to wait for the next gig… and the release of the new album.

When Traffic is chock-full of people - and the event is sold out, indeed! – long awaited Novembre get on stage. The first new thing is Carmelo Orlando without his guitar, focusing only on singing. Indeed, full of its emotional element – both in the mournful, painful clean parts and in the growl – his voice sounds better and his performance results improved compared to some past lives, much closer to the beauty of recordings. Stunning classics, as Nostalgia Platz and Sirens in Filth, alternate with the new songs and the effect is that of an harmonious mosaic of past and present, and the audience seems to cherisch both the old and new Novembre. Veteran Pagliuso’s guitar enchants with its polished melodies and oneiric sounds, and all in all the newcomers Ferilli brothers (guitar and drums) together with bassist Fraschini manage to keep up with the two historical Novembre. Anyway, I have to admit that I feel the absence of Giuseppe Orlando on drums, and certainly the duty of replacing the two Orlando brothers on guitar and drums is not the easiest one and at the same time it is the most unrewarding. It is maybe due to this fact if at times there is a lack of those fluidity and compactness typical of those bands with a long sequence of rehearsals and tours together. Nonetheless tonight concert is engaging and exciting as those of the old formation and it does not taste at all of a dusty, discoloured amarcord. And also Carmelo Orlando seems to be touched by the fact of being once again in front of his audience, once again on stage with his music. URSA is an important, signicant comeback after years of silence and uncertainties about the future of the band: this live tells and confirms that Novembre are back, full of new lifeblood.

Coroner + Acid Death + Sofisticator - 07.02.2016 - The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

Coroner + Acid Death + Sofisticator - 07.02.2016 -  The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

1^ lezione: Voivod (Estragon, Bologna – 17/11/2015)
2^ lezione: Vektor (Exenzia, Prato - 27/11/2015)
3^ lezione: Coroner (The Cage Theatre, Livorno – 07/02/2016)

Coroner + Acid Death + Sofisticator - 02.07.2016 -  The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

Basic course in 3 lessons on the evolution of thrash metal, from raw, funny sound for pimply, drunk nerds to dystopian, sci-fi, complex music for pimply nerds addicted to Commodore-64 and post apocalyptic b-movies.
Lesson #1: Voivod (Estragon, Bologna – 11/17/2015)
Lesson #2: Vektor (Exenzia, Prato - 11/27/2015)
Lesson #3: Coroner (The Cage Theatre, Livorno – 02/07/2016)

The evening at The Cage is opened by Sofisticator and their old school thrash metal assault. Filthy and fast as the genre needs, their songs introduce the headbanging ritual for all the longhaired metalheads. Even though they do not revolutionize the genre, the band from Firenze (featuring some members of Sulphur) impresses and entertains. Heartly reccomended to lovers of these sounds.

Then Acid Death – and from their very first chord they saturate the eardrums with too compressed sounds and too digital distorsions for their thrash/death setlist. Things go better when they play their Meshuggah/Fear Factory-like futuristic, post-industrial songs: nothing new on the horizon, yet at least songs are non damaged by poor sounds.

Finally the actual lesson. Coroner are one of the leading authorities in this field, and they offer clear evidence of this with a great show in which impact and energy are never choked by the technical complexity of the songs. In full respect of the commonplace on Swiss, Coroner are really extremely precise: yet above all they show power, dynamism and infinite creativity. Fast oubursts, mechanical/industrial groovy mid tempo, convoluted – yet enthrolling – rhythmic mazes. Tommy T. Baron solos and the prog, experimetal attitude of melodies are evidence of how influential Coroner were in giving new shapes to thrash metal (new shapes that have become almost usual from the second half of 90s, thanks to bands such as Meshuggah). The uncontainable, Helmet-like energy of some passages tells us how far they went from the boundaries of the genre. After their reunion in 2010 they have not yet released the sequel of Grin (1993) and they are “simply” playing memorable concerts, like this one at The Cage. Considering the high quality of their music and performance, the hope for a new album becomes almost a need.

I really hope that this mini-course on prog, sci-fi thrash metal will be followed by a second level of the same great quality of the first (hopefully with a beautiful lesson by Meshuggah)!
