L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII

L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII
(Subsound Records, 2018)

Processo alchemico perfettamente riuscito.

L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII
(Subsound Records, 2018)

It all starts here. The alchemical transformation takes place during two concerts in 2007 in Genzano. It is here that Loosin 'o' Frequencies become an instrumental band and capture this moment in a recording that only today, more than 10 years later, takes on physical form. And it is with this recording in its hands, in 2008, that the band decides to change its name in L'Ira del Baccano and to make its music available to everyone, in the liquid form of mp3 published online. Since then the recording of those concerts has solidified in the conscience of many fans of the underground, contributing to make L'Ira del Baccano one of the most interesting names as live act. The last, indispensable, transformation, allows us to insert in our discography, alongside the two studio albums, a physical copy of this precious document, to all effects the first brainchild of the Roman band. We cross the alchemical gate (Si non sedes is is an epigraph engraved on this monument hidden in the heart of Rome) to realize how much the band was already then mature to conceive what came later. That is a dilatation and deformation of heavy sounds, sometimes doom and sabbath influenced, in vast airy progressive suites with a fluid and iridescent structure, on the borders of space rock (echoes of Coma Divine and Space Ritual beyond the door). Transmutation of lead into gold, through free flowing jams. Music freed from genres limitations, able to absorb past and present, transforming them into an absolutely personal future. Perfectly successful alchemical process.

L'Ira del Baccano - Terra 42

L’Ira del Baccano – Terra 42
(Subsound Records , 2014)

(Subsound Records, 2014)

It is well known that Italy has been one of the homelands and birthlands for progressive rock. A brilliant era which seems lost in the depths of the past for nowadays listeners. Nevertheless the inheritance of that time is still alive in some cases. First L’Ira del Baccano studio album is a perfect, clear example of this inheritance. Three long typically progressive suites, wrapping in instrumental contortions (never pedantic, pompous or self-satisfied) which were born from free jam sessions then modeled through melodic and technical skills. Yet Terra 42 goes beyond the illustrious past of Italian rock. It does not rest on romantic and symphonic atmospheres typical of most of Italian prog: instead it ventures in space rock and heavy psychedelia, traveling halfway between Hawkwind and Baroness, Ozric Tentacles and Monster Magnet, Greatful Dead and Soundgarden. A journey back and forth in time, accomplished with personality and creativity, which is the completion of 6 years of concerts and visionary jams (formerly immortalized in live album Si non Sedes is Live MMVII). It can not be said if Terra 42 is destined to become the dawn of a new Italian progressive wave, nonetheless it is clear that the explorations on the borders of the musical galaxy performed by the band from Roma have what it takes to awaken a too long dormant past.

Lili Refrain + L’Ira del Baccano + TSUBO – “SHUT UP! FEST” – 26.09.2015 – Traffic Club, Roma

Lili Refrain + L’Ira del Baccano + TSUBO – “SHUT UP! FEST” – 26.09.2015 – Traffic Club, Roma

Lili Refrain è bravissima come musicista e come cantante.

Lili Refrain + L’Ira del Baccano + TSUBO – “SHUT UP! FEST” – 09.26.2015 – Traffic Club, Roma
No name could have been more appropriate than “SHUT UP! FEST”: indeed, the 3 bands litterally silenced the audience, putting their music in foreground and listening at the center of everything else.
First of all TSUBO and their enthrolling grindcore. Just half an hour of music at full speed, right in the face, direct and without frills. Drums are a war machine, the armor on which bass, guitar and voice engraft themselves and from which they rush off the stage. Riffs are tight and direct, and so it is the roar of the singer. Just some rare slowdowns and hints of solos (a few seconds, maybe?). All the rest is pure hardcore attitude.
Time expands and liquefies when L’Ira del Baccano gets on stage. It is a lucky – not accidental! – encounter among psychedelia, 70s prog and certain 90s rock, with a taste of grunge and doomy at times. Anyway, the space rock of this band is not the result of a mere assembling of influences and references, and the flowing of the concert makes it evident that the music coming out of the amps on stage is suspended in time and travels outside of it. Great sounds, fascinating guitars and bass riffs, captivating sound spaces opened by the synth. The first 45 minutes of show are not enough: L’Ira del Baccano can not go off the stage, people want to continue this fantastic trip. “Ok, guys, but this means another 15 minutes!” says Alessandro “Drughito” Santori. Well, that is exactly what we want, Traffic answers: let another quarter of an hour of psych-prog inundate us.
Then it is the turn of Lili Refrain. Expectations were high and they were absolutely fulfilled and overcome by the performance of this incredible one woman band. Far from easy it is to describe her concert, because only the live dimension can make fully appreciate the qualities and talent of this musician. All alone on stage, her guitars, her effects, all the instrumentations to loop herself in live. Her amazing voice, her ability to use it and trasform it, sometimes making it a musical instrument, sometimes emphasizing its skills as in Nature Boy, the wonderful song for voice only. Lili Refrain is a great musician as much as she is a great singer. Her voice – reminiscent of the dreaminess of Lisa Gerrard voice – bewitches and enchants the listener. Guitar melodies, crescendo and distorted-disruptive dilations capture the audience. It is almost like being part of a ceremony or a celebration. But with the naivety and levity of who reveals her art on stage with enthusiasm, and with the same levity plays with the audience – made of people suspended in ecstatic listening – coming off the stage, blowing black feathers from her scarf onto the faces, heartily thanking a 10 years old fan playing on her knees in front of him at the end of the show.
Music scene in Rome is lively and active. Traffic Club succeeded in organizing a great evening of Music, putting on the same stage three really diverse bands, yet sharing the same high quality of their projects and the genuine, authentic, spirit of those who make music for the music. The result was outstanding. And those present really appreciated it a lot!
