Roadburn 2018 - Day 1

Roadburn 2018 - Day 1
[Harsh Toke + Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas + Converge + Årabrot + Waste of Space Orchestra]

Oggi è il turno dell'ultimo, stupendo, The Dusk in Us.

Tutto l'album.

Roadburn 2018 - Day 1
[Harsh Toke + Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas + Converge + Årabrot + Waste of Space Orchestra]

The 1,300 km road leading us to Tilburg is completely different from that crossed last year. No snowstorm, no endless queue of trucks. The closer we get to the goal, the more the Sun is dazzling and roads are free. San Diego Takeover has made its effect. Arrived in the Dutch city, we realize that the large space that this year's edition will dedicate to the psychedelic scene of San Diego has changed the climate, making it truly Californian. Only palms and beach are missing. 30 °C are already there.

We seize the legendary wristband, key access essential for the wonders of the next 4 days, and then wee look for a bit of relief in the darkness of the Main Stage at 013. Here we have a long Scandinavian night, lit by aurora borealis.

Indeed, the main stage will be inaugurated by Waste of Space Orchestra: super-combo born from the union of the Finns Oranssi Pazuzu and Dark Buddha Rising. And to immediately dispel any doubt, it must be said that the union of the two bands is not a simple sum of the parts, but a really third and strengthened entity. It oscillates between dark heaviness and lights that range from the depths of black holes to the dazzling glow of incandescent stars. Three voices alternate, powerful and alien (amazing Marko Neuman androgynous one), leading us through the stormy sea of riffs and dissonant phrasings. The crew is composed of ten musicians (two drums and two keyboards), a sort of Crimsonian vessel dispersed in a frozen sea. A project specifically created for this festival (and for which amazing videoclips have been created) that involves lovers of the most experimental sounds, leaving hope in a live record of this unprecedented (and unforgettable) experience.

Compulsory passage under the sun to go and lock us up in Het Patronaat for Årabrot. The atmosphere of the former church is pervaded by an almost suffocating heat that makes a strange pair with the Norwegian band and its songs born in the long Scandinavian nights, marked with frozen dark atmospheres. Heat sticks on us like the unpleasant feelings emanating from their darkwavish noise rock, and Kjetil Nernes's voice is that of a perverse vicar, soaked with sweat and bad vibes. The first part of the set focuses on the beautiful The Gospel, but it is the second part that convinces even more, thanks to truly incredible compactness and gait. The long almost noise sequence, with a convulsive jam character, closing the last song of the set, is really the acme of this concert.

Our convoy retraces its steps, back to the Main Stage, because it is time of the first of the two Converge concerts. This year Jacob Bannon is the curator of the festival and his band has two shows scheduled, both dedicated to the full performance of one of their albums. Today is the turn of the latest, wonderful, The Dusk in Us. The expectation is high and is fully repaid. The 13 songs flow in front of us and in our ears like a stream of consciousness, interrupted only by the captions of Bannon's words. Compact and violent, yet not without an emotional heart, as songs like the titletrack and Thousand Of Miles Between Us literally move for their touching and vibrant beauty. A unique experience.

But if we are already flying high, the most enthralling moment of the day arrives with Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas performing their Mariner in its entirety. We almost do not believe it. The whole album. With Julie Christmas. One of our most beloved singers since the times of Battle of Mice and Made Out of Babies. And we really had no idea what was waiting for us live. Just as the audience filling the 013 at the highest levels could not expect it, for what was announced as the last chance to listen to this collaboration live (extremely rare event also in the past). Julie Christmas's voice is a true revelation. Powerful, exciting and versatile, in its alternation of hysteria and delicacy. If on albums it is impressive, live it fascinates the listener. Impossible not to be harnessed in the network of schizophrenic melodies she creates and constantly changes, with incredible ease. Cult of Luna prove to be much more mature and consolidated musicians than when we saw them live in 2007, and the result is a futuristic, spatial and apocalyptic post-metal, to say the least, touching. A concert which can really be defined as unique and which leaves the feeling of having witnessed an experience unlikely to be repeated.

There is time to return to Earth and realize that all in all the sky has not yet sunk into the night, San Diego climate is still there, it is still hot, and we still have earthly needs that we feed in the streets of the festival, surrounded by enthusiasts like us, breathing this beautiful atmosphere of absolute relax that for four days suspends space and time.

To continue on this mood, nothing better than closing the evening with Harsh Toke. It's 11:30 pm, but the atmosphere at Het Patronaat is still overheated. San Diego Takeover really brought its long wave and its sunny beaches to Holland. In the last edition the quartet had dedicated its set to Roky Erickson and made us relive all the beauty and intensity of the psychedelia of the past. This year there are their songs, but the essence does not change. The four drag you on board their space skateboard and do everything to never get you off. Indeed, enraptured by the bass ride of Light Up and Live and with the mind twisted around the guitar solos, you would never really want to go down.

How to perfectly end a first day full of the most varied emotions. And it's only the first day!

Desertfest Antwerp 2016 - Day 2

Desertfest Antwerp 2016 – Day 2

Desertfest Antwerp 2016 – Day 2
[Pentagram + Weedeater + Colour Haze + Årabrot + Giöbia + Purson + Wolvennest]

After the rain of the night before, on this second day of Desertfest a nice spring sun greets us in the Trix garden. But the sun does not certainly shine inside the Canyon Stage - the stage on the second floor which looks like a rather dark rock disco - where Wolvennest inaugurate our musical day with a mix of darkwave, atmospheric black metal and psychedelia. Candlesticks and skulls decorate the stage, while the incense fumes invade the hall. A coup de théâtre which explicitly recalls black metal imaginary, although the Belgian band uses the glacial atmospheres typical of that genre in combination with slow rhythmics, space rock effects and vocals worthy of the most ethereal darkwave. At the center of the stage, the hypnotic presence of the singer (as well as mistress synths and keyboards) is the focal point of the storm generated by three perfectly calibrated and enveloping guitars. A quite charming surprise, recalling Wolves in the Throne Room and Oranssi Pazuzu, and showing how this festival is not limited only to purely stoner, psychedelic and doom sounds.

With an emotional leap worthy of a person suffering from bipolar disease, we pass from Wolvennest gothic theatre to Purson colorful and joyous one, on the Desert Stage. Their multifaceted kaleidoscopic rock transmits a breath of sunshine in contrast to the oppressive air breathed upstairs. Technically faultless, Purson launch themselves into surreal progressive constructions - deliberately kitsch, but never redundant - although not as much psychedelic as their super-acid albums would suggest. Rosalie Cunningham (singer and guitarist) leads the band along her ultra-versatile resounding voice, reminiscent of the great female performers of the late 60s. Reluctantly (since we were now enraptured by the orgy of colors and notes!) we lose the last minutes of their concert to move to Vulture Stage, where a great Italian band is about to perform.

Giöbia psychedelia is completely different from Purson one: hypnotic instrumental songs focused on the obsessive groove of drums and bass, on which guitar and synth go wild in space ramblings, creating shoegaze-tasted sonic bubbles. Sounds are definitely better than those heard at Lo Fi concert a few months ago, and there is a plenty of energy, affected only by some technical problems on a couple of tracks in which - unfortunately! - vocals and sound bouzouki literally disappear. The band from Milan confirms to be able to manage the dark and obsessive side of psychedelia in the most natural way as you can hear in their last, wonderful, album - Magnifier.

Then Årabrot, on the same stage. Simultaneously Elder and Cough play on the other two stages: it is really a shame to miss their shows, yet the Norwegian band is one of those we were waiting for with more trepidation, after the release of the extraordinary The Gospel - and their live show will exceed even ours highest expectations. From the very beginning they show a pace even more martial than on record, reinterpreting their songs in a more gaunt and skeletal, yet even more powerful, way. Solemn as their noisy post-punk requires, but also crazy (not only for the absurd headgear they wear, but especially for Kjetil Nernes attitude and poses), they are a real hurricane able to capture the public with one of the most intense concerts of these three days. Beaten by dissonant shots and by Nernes death rattles, with the cathartic power of songs like Tall Man still present in our ears, we leave the Vulture Stage a little enraptured and suspended, in the same way we did after Yob concert.

Colour Haze music, in which we immerged ourselves entering Desert Stage, is the perfect counterpart to the Årabrot violent attack. It seems to be entered into a thermal pool as much we feel wrapped and cuddled by the long blues-psychedelic jams of the German band. After an extremely soft start the tube sounds of the trio show all their warmth, indulging in desertic and sandy riffs. Far away from any theatricality (which instead today we have witnessed several times), the three play the genuine music of those who have nothing to prove, being at peace with themself thanks to a guitar, a tube amp, something to smoke and a beautiful view of endless freedom to contemplate. The long songs flow fascinating and leave only positive feelings. Great live show for the band included on the bill only in the last days after the news of the Graveyard split!

Instead of smoking Weedeater (as the name suggests) did probably eat a cake with a too high concentration of hashish. Indeed, their music is dirty, rotten and drunk (the singer / bassist Dave "Dixie" Collins constantly and proudly waves a bottle of Jack Daniel's in the air). Their sludgy stoner doom smells like mildew and damp, and Dixie shrill voice transmits the bad vibrations of the hangover. Although they are obviously insane (drummer has a lot of fun in playing the hi-hat by kicking it), they play amazingly well. Their bass-centric sludge is a sequence of swollen riffs with a slow groove, very dynamic and engaging. Only 45 minutes of live, but really brutal!

We conclude the evening going to visit doom metal grandaddies. Pentagram hit the Desert Stage. The history lesson given by the American band is not academic and dusty: indeed Bobby Liebling and Victor Griffin (the two core members of the band) have got a huge amount of energy to spare and even ideas - as their most recent songs prove. Not only entertainer of the audience with his bizarre facial expressions and his absolutely unlikely apparel, Liebling still has got a great voice, as well as Griffin proves to be a great guitarist. It is the time of revenge: after years in which they were deeply confined in the underground of heavy metal world, now they are recognized as the founding fathers of one of nowadays more appreciated genres in the field of heavy music. With the complete destruction of the stage and the instruments - in pure rock n' roll style! - it ends this second (intense) day of the festival.

Årabrot – The Gospel

Årabrot – The Gospel
(Fysisk Format, 2016)

Årabrot – The Gospel
(Fysisk Format, 2016)

A great part of last decades rock music would never have come into the world without the pain and discomfort of its authors. To free from negativity expressing it in the form of sound matter is a cathartic operation that has nurtured many artists, Årabrot included. And if in the music of the Norwegian band suffering has always played a key role, in their latest album Kjetil Nernes - mind of the project - personal events brand their music in an even deeper way than in the past. Faced with throat cancer, in The Gospel Nernes released anxieties and pains, as well as anger and desire for rebirth. A dark, dissonant, acid and nervous album, reminiscent of both Swans and most visceral post punk gloomy apocalyptic universe and 80s/90s noise rock ulcerous distortions (The Jesus Lizard, Melvins…). The disturbing edges of the disease hide a burning desire for redemption and an angry rush, making the nine songs immediate and engaging, although emotionally heavy. Some of the most appreciated experimental musicians (Stephen O’Malley, Andrew Liles, Ted Parsons…) have contributed to Nernes seventh full lenght, but the greatness of this album lies mainly in the mind of the Norwegian artist, able to bring out - and free - the "black" in it enclosed.
