The Body - I Have Fought Against It, But I Can’t Any Longer.

The Body - I Have Fought Against It, But I Can’t Any Longer.
(Thrill Jockey, 2018)

“I Have Fought Against It, But I Can’t Any Longer.”

The Body - I Have Fought Against It, But I Can’t Any Longer.
(Thrill Jockey, 2018)

“I Have Fought Against It, But I Can’t Any Longer.” After writing the full stop and thus concluding the letter addressed to her sister, Virginia Woolf committed suicide. With this premise, putting on the stereo a record that from the title mentions such an intimate and dramatic confession makes you feel dirty. Yet the heartbeat that makes its way into the sea of drones and noises - and on which the Chrissy Wolpert voice recites a touching funeral poem - shows how much The Body music throws itself into pain with humanity, without trace of morbid voyeurism. Soon we become protagonists of this suffering, and no longer spectators. It is in this moment that everything collapses, within us. The weight of pain cracks the lucidity and madness prevails, sucking us in a pathological vortex, in which an angelic voice (that of Kristin Hayter, aka Lingua Ignota) turns into a scary rattle, and bassess echoe deeply on martial electronic bases reminiscent of early Swans nightmares and Throbbing Gristle raving. For The Body, self-destruction is both disgusting and magnetic. It has an attractive power that crosses the boundaries of rational thought. And it is so emotionally overwhelming to annihilate every emotion. Once in its vortex, the forces to get out of it are always weaker. Asthenia is the last step of this descent into the abyss, and there could be no more intense words than Bohumil Hrabal ones to accompany us.

Pontiak - Dialectic of Ignorance

Pontiak - Dialectic of Ignorance
(Thrill Jockey, 2017)

Dallo slow stoner di Herb Is My Next Door Neighbor all'oscurità post punk di We've Fucked This Up, attraversiamo continuamente nuovi paesaggi, nelle sterminate terre selvagge americane, utilizzando sempre sentieri poco battuti.

Pontiak - Dialectic of Ignorance
(Thrill Jockey, 2017)

Three brothers living and working in a farm in the heart of Virginia on the Blue Ridge Mountains. Far from the chaos of the big cities, focused on the production of handcrafted beers and on long psychedelic jam sessions in the homemade studio. Almost one episode of Little House on the Prairie, with Neil Young albums instead of prayers in front of a table laden with food. With Dialectic of Ignorance, Carney brothers family saga reaches the eighth full-length episode. Like Ingalls family of the tv series (and of the novel, before), also Carney family must face the dark side of rural life to keep their idyllic and bucolic way of life. In this episode, the three bearded Americans take a journey through misty and isolated landscapes, inhabited only by the ghosts of the Native Americans. The music runs smoothly at a slow pace that our senses of citizens are not used to perceive (unless under the influence of certain substances). Obsessive riffs, rich in fuzz, repeat themselves circularly while the rhythm flows soft and enveloping, expanding melodies. In the psychedelic mist, melodic breaks of great peace and brightness (the interweavings of whispered voices) of shoegaze taste. But the feeling of stunning and weird anxiety about what we can not see, beyond the horizon, shows how much this is an album far from the stereotypes of musical genres. From the slow stoner of Herb Is My Next Door Neighbor to the post punk darkness of We've Fucked This Up, we're continually crossing new landscapes in the endless American wilderness, always using scarcely traced paths. Let's hope this saga, like that of the Ingalls, will continue for another 200 episodes.

Eternal Tapestry - Wild Strawberries

Eternal Tapestry - Wild Strawberries
(Thrill Jockey, 2015)

Eternal Tapestry - Wild Strawberries
(Thrill Jockey, 2015)

Following Eternal Tapestry in search of wild strawberries, there is the real risk of getting lost. The five musicians actually do anything to make you lose orientation along the paths of the most dilated space rock, letting you taste every kind of hallucinogenic plant. From a remote hut on the Oregon mountains - where the band released the liquid improvisations matured in this album - you will find yourself wandering in dense forests enveloped by moisture, without understanding how you got there or how to get out of it. Wild Strawberries is an album of fluctuant jam sessions, mostly instrumental, that has its muse in the wild Nature. Eight endless songs (each one with the name of a plant as title) enlightened by psychedelic rays of keyboards, so much dazzling to make it impossible to distinguish between sleep and wakefulness. On these carpets (sometimes suspended as cosmic drone, sometimes undulant with hypnotic rhythmic as kraut rock spirals) guitar lianas twist without end and without destination. In the grooves of this double vinyl - separated from rationality and human rhythms, plunging lightly into the spirituality of Nature - there is the incessant downstream water flow and the blow of the wind through the trees. Cosmic and space music, yet played on Planet Earth, for Planet Earth. For all (mental!) travellers and explorers who do not fear to venture in the “beyond”.
