There Will Be Blood + G-Fast One Man Band - 27.01.2017 - FOMO Fuzz'N'Roll Fest, Villa Guerrazzi (Cecina, LI)

There will be Blood + G-Fast One Man Band
27.01.2017 - FOMO Fuzz'N'Roll Fest, Villa Guerrazzi (Cecina, LI)

There will be Blood + G-Fast One Man Band
01.27.2017 - FOMO Fuzz'N'Roll Fest, Villa Guerrazzi (Cecina, LI)

Arrived in the beautiful location of Villa Guerrazzi in Cecina, I find myself in front of a non-existent stage, in the dim light studded with light bulbs hanging from the ceiling and Gianluca Fasteni - aka G-Fast One Man Band - surrounded by its numerous and multifaceted instrumentation. I am always curious intrigued by solo projects, because I look with some admiration who takes the stage alone, often equipped with a great voice, almost always
with a bit of irreverence, but - to be honest - also just as often with considerable musical talent. Tonight one man project is no exception. Minimal (just kick and snare) drum, three and one (and even none!) string self-made "guitars", various other unlikely instruments and a very good voice, G-Fast has fun and fascinates me with his music wich sounds a bit western, a bit country, a bit folk and above all has got a great groove.

Almost on the same atmospheric wavelength when it is the turn of There Will Be Blood. Rich in influences and contaminations, their blues rock is enthralling from the very first notes, and it is impossible to remain stuck in front of the stage. It 's like being in a saloon with western orchestra playing songs on which you can not help but  keep time and clap your hands (or stomp your feet down!). The sound is warm and vibrant, and the three are skillful stage beasts as well as good musicians. Peak of the night the last song, with Gianluca Fasteni joining the trio in a sort of super-jam.

That this first - all made in Italy - Fuzz'N'Roll Fest  may be the forerunner of other events with this trademark!

Chelsea Wolfe + Hate & Merda – 14.08.2016 – MusicaW Festival (Castellina Marittima, PI)

Chelsea Wolfe + Hate & Merda
14.08.2016 – MusicaW Festival (Castellina Marittima, PI)

Chelsea Wolfe + Hate & Merda
08.14.2016 – MusicaW Festival (Castellina Marittima, PI)

I have been waiting several months for this concert. And exactly tonight it is one of those completely wrong nights, one of those that make you feel all the heaviness of L’eternità di un’estate terribile (in English, The Eternity of a terrible Summer). This is the reason why I manage to listen only to the concerts of the killing duo from Florence and of the dark poetess/priestess (and I apologize to the other two bands – Mars Era and Passed – which I would really have liked to listen to!).

Hate & Merda do not spare anything to the large audience of the small open air theatre in Castellina Marittima. The summa of La Capitale del Male and L’Anno dell’Odio flows on all present with its load of brutality and liberating fury. If a week ago they were the band with the best sounds on the small Benicio’s Stage at Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest, tonight the power of the synergy guitar/drums has gone even beyond and their sound – at the same time rotten and distilled – really was a balm to my ears. Who still does not know them, he must remedy!

As it is proper of the nature of every sorceress – shall she be fairy or witch - Chelsea Wolfe enchants all present and manages to gather around her stage and her voice such a flood of people that would embarrass the piper of Hamelin of the tale by Brothers Grimm. With a set-list focused on her latest amazing album – Abyss – to which are entrusted both the opening and the closing of her concert, the Californian singer-songwriter – supported by her band – fascinates the audience with her dreamlike and heartbreaking, powerful and melodious voice. If on recordings one gets the impression of being in front of a sort of ferrywoman of souls towards obscure and unknown shores, in the live show this feeling is amplified and it really seems that Chelsea Wolfe can lead you – almost hypnotized – wherever she wants. Sounds and voice are flawless for the whole concert: a hour and a quarter single intense emotion.

Sometimes you really need to purify yourself through music. With their opposed forces, Hate & Merda and Chelsea Wolfe were the catharsis I needed tonight.

Myrkur - M

Myrkur – M
(Relapse Records, 2015)

L'inverno sta arrivando.

Myrkur – M
(Relapse Records, 2015)

It is a snow covered forest that one crossed by Myrkur in her first full length. A wood of huge firs, shrouded in fog, reminiscent of that same wood painted by Ulver with their Bergtatt. The Danish musician invites us to follow her into this northern landscape in complete solitude. If at times her music looks into frightening black metal abysses (Hævnen, Mordet e Skaði), more often it floats suspended in the mysterious quiet of an asleep wood in the winter frost (especially with the piano/voice snowflakes in Tenhi style). Romantic dreamlike (almost shoegaze) melodies, sometimes harmonized into epic fantastic chants, sometimes deformed into nightmarish terrifying angry snarls and rattles. If a blonde top model with a past in an American pop band does not deserve to be compared to a “sacred” musical genre as black metal is for the purists of this style, for all those people not interested in the concept of “artistic purity” M is simply an emotional album with the only defect of not going too far from Ulver intuitions in their very first full length. After the hype of her debut EP, Myrkur asks for the help of some great musicians (Garm – from Ulver – at the production, Teloch – from Mayhem – at the bass, Øyvind Myrvoll - from Dødheimsgard  – at the drums) to conceive an album which could perfectly be the ideal soundtrack of a love and death story set into a fantastic world really near to that of Games of Throne. Winter is coming.

Chelsea Wolfe - Abyss

Chelsea Wolfe - Abyss
(Sargent House, 2015)

Chelsea Wolfe - Abyss
(Sargent House, 2015)

The awareness of being awake, yet at the same time the inability to exit the oneiric lethargy that prevents the action. This is the abyss painted by Chelsea Wolfe who - as a modern William Blake - ventures into the borderland between dream and reality through heavy experimental music language. Her journey begins with the mammoth distortions of Carrion Flowers: the voice of the Californian singer-songwriter passes through them almost on tiptoe - with apparent fragility, but actually with a typically female determination. In the apocalyptic-industrial strokes reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails and Swans, Chelsea Wolfe plays a role halfway between the dark priestess à la Jarboe and the damned - deeply human - soul in search of a ray of light showing the way out (somehow similar to PJ Harvey). In this balance between the thickest darkness and a feeble romantic warmth lays the grandeur of Chelsea Wolfe fifth album: in the perfect blend of gothic atmospheres, industrial/noise obsessions and nocturnal folk, the whole sustained by Mike Sullivan (Russian Circles) "spiritual" guitar. Abyss deep and stratified sound owes much to John Congleton production, extraordinary in enhancing both the most intimate and acoustic moments (Crazy Love) and those dominated by post metal distortion (Dragged Out). The "sleep paralysis" sung by Chelsea Wolfe is a metaphor for the constant struggle to free themselves from the weight of alienation: will it be possible to wake up from this dream/nightmare?

Hexvessel - When We Are Death

Hexvessel - When We Are Death
(Century Media, 2016)

Hexvessel - When We Are Death
(Century Media, 2016)

Hexvessel are dead. Yet their passing is a regeneration and its name is When We Are Death. Reached the third full lenght, the new incarnation of the Finnish band is rooted in the humus of night folk of the past, yet it projects its own leaves towards different directions, in search of a spiritual light recalling the late 60s American psychedelia, with some hints of current romantic Anathema. After all, Mat Mc Nerney's artistic life is a continuous regeneration (just think about the many transformations during his career, from Dødheimsgard avantgarde black metal to Beastmilk/Grave Pleasures post punk). Landed some years ago into the Finnish forests to create Hexvessel, this time the English musician makes explicit his own philosophy of death and rebirth, placed in a natural cycle which connects and interrelates everything. When We Are Death is delicate, melancholic psychedelic rock. Listening to this album you breath the mystery and wonder of those who face the unexpected, yet unavoidable, change. For all those who think that radical changes are lifeblood.

Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow

Jefferson Airplane – Surrealistic Pillow
(RCA Victor, 1967)

“Feed your head!”

Jefferson Airplane – Surrealistic Pillow
(RCA Victor, 1967)

“Feed your head!” The pills Grace Slick presents to Jefferson Airplane when she joins the band in the fall of 1966 (and that open the doors of the psychedelic experience and of a new vision of the world to an entire generation) are more important than the two masterpieces Somebody to Love and White Rabbit. The singer brings electric energy and sense of freedom, erotic appeal and fantasy. She owns the seeds of Summer of Love that the band uses - with creativity - to integrate its dreamy folk rock. The powerful, flexible and expressive Slick’s voice harmonizes itself perfectly with Balin and Kantner ones, generating a rock that is not individual strength yet community spirit. Unlike other psychedelic bands of that period, there are no studio experiments, nor instrumental delirium or oriental atmospheres (except vocal glissando by Slick) yet a deep sense of melody that expresses itself at its best in vocal (and guitar) weavings. Three voices, three guitars: each of them interdependent, each of them essential in general contest of the music. A truly teamwork, that marks an era: not only from a musical point of view, but from a conceptual one too.

Steve Von Till - A Life Unto Itself

Steve Von Till – A Life Unto Itself
(Neurot Recordings, 2015)

Steve Von Till – A Life Unto Itself
(Neurot Recordings, 2015)

Leaving the noise of civilization to take refuge into the heart of the wild world, detaching from human obsessions and hustle and bustle, accepting the pace imposed by Nature. Steve Von Till continues his soloist route, slowly and in contemplative mood, going over again the paths of nocturnal folk that characterize his previous three albums, leaving aside the apocalyptic explosions of his main band (Neurosis) and the psychedelic experiments of Harvestman project. Along his pilgrimage Von Till is accompanied by a few trusted friends: Eyvind Kang (viola), Jason Kardong (pedal steel) and Randal Dunn (synth). Yet A Life Unto Itself is mainly a lonely voyage, a journey in which - even more than in the past - Von Till let his deep, hoarse voice (in some ways similar to Mark Lanegan one) and his guitar arpeggios (debtors of Nick Drake and Townes Van Zandt melancholy) brighten the woods surrounded by darkness, with some transitory, dreamlike-tasty electric lightnings. Seven songs evoking the smell of musk and dry leaves, images of vast forests, chill lakes and mountains shrouded by the autumnal fog. Von Till confirms his intense poetics sketching a path in which the frailty of a man in the presence of Nature is balanced by his great interior strength in the attempt to cope with her. Intimate and shamanistic, A Life Unto Itself is the gift that Von Till gives to all the lovers of wild territories.
