Nebula - 03.10.2019 - The Cage (Livorno)

Nebula - 03.10.2019 - The Cage (Livorno)

Nebula - 10.03.2019 - The Cage (Livorno)

To tell this story I begin from the end. One of those sad endings that American cinema would never have the courage to stage. After a one hour concert, Nebula return on stage mildly acclaimed by the few present and prepare themselves for the encore in a venue whose large empty spaces recall the American deserts of western movies. Eddie Glass takes his guitar, outlines a riff, but something doesn't work. He tries to understand why his amp doesn't sound like it should, he asks for help, but he gets no answer. From the depths of the Cage nobody - absolutely nobody - moves. Neither the sound engineer, nor members of the staff of the venue. Nobody. Confused, Glass wanders on stage. In a surreal silence he still asks for someone to come and give him a hand. It's like feeling vultures flying over Nebula carcass in this desert. Glass and his fellows surrender. There will be no final duel in western style. Noone comes to their rescue. The desert swallows them up and makes them disappear in general silence.

But how did this story begin? Slowly, like a relaxed ride among cacti. With unexpected slowness Nebula started their concert, jamming, letting themselves go into a natural crescendo. During the first few minutes the band had to autofocus. Then they galloped off into the sandy deserts of their stoner rock, to reach that launching tower hidden in the canyon, from which to reach the stars. The trajectory of the cosmic journey was not linear. Nor constant was the speed. Propulsive riffs pushed the spaceship to supersonic speed, but often they fragmented themselves into a dust of solos. A nebula of gas and psychedelic dust in which it is difficult to be orientes. Actually, I'd say it's wrong to look for a direction. Because Eddie Glass (now the only historical member of the band, after the departure of bassist Tom Davies) plays instinctively, without any aerospace engineering project behind him. Though Michael Amster's (former member of the psychedelics Blaak Heat) powerful and precise drums maintains the trajectory, Glass directs the spaceship looking at the moment, at the "here and now". This makes the music complex, sometimes confused, but also genuine, true, unpredictable and engaging. Just abandon yourself, and perceive the sensitivity and warmth of Glass's voice (a drunken version of Mark Arm, of Mudhoney) or the burning expressive urgency of his solos. In the end the spaceship gets lost in a storm of asteroids, and it lands in the desolate desert that I told you at the beginning of this story. A sad end, certainly, but perhaps also the most natural one, given the unpredictability of the pilot and the nonexistent spirit of collaboration (or rather, I would really say, of lack of interest) of the planet on which he landed.

Monkey 3 – Sphere

Monkey 3 – Sphere
(Napalm Records, 2019)

Monkey 3 – Sphere
(Napalm Records, 2019)

The moment when the gaseous fog opening Prism is broken by a beam of melodic light, literally epic and magnificent. That is the instant in which I realize the jump into the hyperspace made by Monkey 3 with their new record. Sharp, bright, with a dazzling clarity. A leap towards a seemingly unattainable quantum state. Abandoning the gravity 0 environment dear to the most hypnotic space rock, the Swiss compose a sci-fi progressive rock record, which looks with lucidity and determination beyond psychedelic spirals, using as an instruction manual what Pink Floyd wrote half a century ago. If in some passages the wide spaces created by the band can convey a sense of vertigo, on the whole the spacecraft's control cloche is always firmly in the hands of its pilots, who guide us through galaxies, along well-defined trajectories. The emotional, almost cinematographic, emphasis of the six new instrumental compositions is functional to the construction of the climax. A perfect take-off, calculated with engineering precision. A flight that is insensitive to turbulence, like that of a drone whose hyper-stabilized movement allows for steady and focused shots. The final Ellipsis represents the escape from the atmosphere and, with its obsessive gait in the cosmic void, it stuns like the old but gold 35007 records, before exploding in Tool-like distortion shots, giving that unpredictability that any space travel needs.

King Buffalo + Child - 29.06.2019 - Cascina Bellaria Rural Music Club! (Sezzadio, AL)

King Buffalo + Child - 29.06.2019 - Cascina Bellaria Rural Music Club! (Sezzadio, AL)

King Buffalo + Child - 06.29.2019 - Cascina Bellaria Rural Music Club! (Sezzadio, AL)

It may be because of the infernal heat of this summer, or it may be because I'm getting older, the fact is that this year I stand even less than usual those mega summer concerts with thousands of people burning below the sun. Really much better to take shelter in the Piedmontese countryside, for an intimate concert, taking a swim in the pool and having a cold beer. A party with friends, rather than a simple concert, also thanks to the cool atmosphere at Cascina Bellaria.

Child integrate perfectly into the relaxed and genuinely hippie environment of the venue, with their red-hot rock blues coming straight from the late 60s. Skilfully maneuvered feedbacks becoming soft pentatonics, extremely fluid and enthralling drums, and fuzz-loaded riffs drying my hair still wet after the pool. Yet the hints to the golden age of rock are never nostalgic, because their music has got personality: it is alive, spontaneous and perfectly anchored to the "here and now". Amazing.

If Child's spirituality comes from the roots, King Buffalo's one absorbs energy directly from the leaves. Their psychedelic hard rock looks upwards, beyond Earth's atmosphere, and it throws itself headlong among stars and planets, thanks to riffs which are cyclically multiplied by reverberations and bass lines always rich in propelling groove. A kaleidoscope on the edge of space/prog, played with surgical precision, which does not disdain some stoner explosion. During the encore, after an impeccable concert, the drummer linger over a bottle of red wine, and the rest of the band must jump through hoops to keep up with his now fogged and slowed down trajectories. Something unexpected that makes this beautiful summer evening even more sincere and funny.

L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII

L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII
(Subsound Records, 2018)

Processo alchemico perfettamente riuscito.

L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII
(Subsound Records, 2018)

It all starts here. The alchemical transformation takes place during two concerts in 2007 in Genzano. It is here that Loosin 'o' Frequencies become an instrumental band and capture this moment in a recording that only today, more than 10 years later, takes on physical form. And it is with this recording in its hands, in 2008, that the band decides to change its name in L'Ira del Baccano and to make its music available to everyone, in the liquid form of mp3 published online. Since then the recording of those concerts has solidified in the conscience of many fans of the underground, contributing to make L'Ira del Baccano one of the most interesting names as live act. The last, indispensable, transformation, allows us to insert in our discography, alongside the two studio albums, a physical copy of this precious document, to all effects the first brainchild of the Roman band. We cross the alchemical gate (Si non sedes is is an epigraph engraved on this monument hidden in the heart of Rome) to realize how much the band was already then mature to conceive what came later. That is a dilatation and deformation of heavy sounds, sometimes doom and sabbath influenced, in vast airy progressive suites with a fluid and iridescent structure, on the borders of space rock (echoes of Coma Divine and Space Ritual beyond the door). Transmutation of lead into gold, through free flowing jams. Music freed from genres limitations, able to absorb past and present, transforming them into an absolutely personal future. Perfectly successful alchemical process.

The Freeks - Crazy World

The Freeks - Crazy World
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2018)

The Freeks - Crazy World
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2018)

If Ruben Romano had joined Eddie Glass in the resurrection of the historical core of Nebula (hopefully to compose new songs), it would have been difficult to contain the cosmic ecstasy of all those nostalgic of late 90s stoner rock. But we probably would have lost the chance to discover Romano's new soul which with his Freeks - without any sense of nostalgia - digs out Detroit garage rock, projecting it in the most remote galaxies. The fourth album of the L.A. band was born from the proto punk of the previous record (Shattered) but, wide open the garage door, it reveals to have parked here a (rusty, dirty, dented) spaceship ready to take off. Crazy World leaves from the dusty soil of a cellar (American Lightning, featuring Ray Hanson of Thee Hypnotics) and morbidly flirts with a cover of a Pj Harvey's song (This is Love) turning it into a track smelling like alcohol and cigarettes. Then he turns on the engines of the old space wreck to let it float in a sky of psychedelic jam (Take 9) before launching it on intergalactic journeys full of explosions and bright flashes (Chronic Abduction) and finally let it land with a majestic ballad (Mothership to Mother Earth). Despite the vintage aftertaste (reminiscet of 60s sci-fi b-movies, with references to alien abductions and strange experiments on human beings) there is no room for any revivalist retromania, because Romano and his band have got disruptive and irrepressible energy and fantasy, essential to restart an "out of fashion" spaceship like theirs, letting it travel along new trajectories.

Black Rainbows – Pandaemonium

Black Rainbows – Pandaemonium
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2018)

Black Rainbows – Pandaemonium
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2018)

To pass from the reactionary garbage dustbin to the shelves of absolutely unmissable cult DVDs, 60s/70s Italian b-movies needed the catwalk offered by American authors like Quentin Tarantino. Black humor, taste for excess, desire to shock, sex, violence and vulgarity: all this for years, in our country, has been a cultural taboo to be ashamed of. Not to mention the explicit references to genres born abroad and re-proposed in Italy with reduced means. As long as some prominent (American) name did not make us realize how extraordinary the craft creativity of our authors was. In music, all this is perfectly represented by Black Rainbows. Not adequately considered in their homeland, they collect deserved attention abroad, where they are regular guests in genre festivals, and they are counted among the leading names in the stoner scene of recent years. Putting their last record into the stereo is astonishingly entertaining as bumping into the heart of the night into a movie by Antonio Margheriti. While maintaining some high-speed accelerations in Fu Manchu style (High to Hell, Sacrifice), the funky groove of a chase on a bypass typical of some albums of the past is now projected more and more deeply into space, and it often turns into a steamroller crushing spaceships queueing at the traffic lights (Grindstone) or in colorful flying saucers in orbit in the Hawkwind galaxy (13th Step of the Pyramid). Thanks to the strong and powerful touch of Filippo Ragazzoni (who replaced Al Croce on drums), the latest film directed by Gabriele Fiori has got the unstoppable strenght of a movie that does not fear the censorship, and the maturity of those who know how to expand their own personality without ever distorting it. A film that could talk about alien abductions and interstellar chases, without ever denying its genre of reference, yet constantly extending its boundaries. A vinyl to be kept on the shelf of absolutely unmissable cult records.

Black Rainbows + Sonic Wolves - 07.04.2018 - Cox 18 (Milano)

Black Rainbows + Sonic Wolves - 07.04.2018 - Cox 18 (Milano)

Before The End Comes raggiungono l'equilibrio perfetto suonando davvero trascinanti.

Black Rainbows + Sonic Wolves - 04.07.2018 - Cox 18 (Milano)

Little seems to have changed since that December 2006 when I first stepped into Cox 18. It is awesome to be in this bulwark of the Milanese counter-culture, once again for a heavy psychedelic concert, hoping it will not be the last time. At the time it was for Toner Low, this time for our Black Rainbows and Sonic Wolves.

Our eardrums begin to fry with Sonic Wolves, whose dirty and dusty assault is an act of revolt against the more conventional and glossy rock and an act of love towards the most visceral and sincere one. It is a pleasure to be transported by the most direct rides, those in which you breathe Lemmy alcoholic breath, and even if Vita is not always that precise (he admits to be a bit exhausted because of the just ended tour with Ufomammut) and the voice of Kayt does not resonate as powerful as we would expect, songs have got plenty of groove, without disdaining psych passages, which in the titletrack of their Before The End Comes reach the perfect balance sounding really enthralling.

Then the stage is all for Black Rainbows. The band from Rome presents their brand new Pandaemonium. Only a few seconds to realize that Gabriele Fiori band has made the leap in quality. Fuzz up to the max, overwhelming riffs, amazing groove, and a real river of energy slammed into the face of the audience. It may be due to the new drummer (Filippo Ragazzoni), with a certainly more square, powerful and groovy touch, definitely less loose, fluid and seventish than Al Croce one, but perhaps more suited to the boost of band heavier songs (yet without undermining their most space passages). It may be due to some of the new tracks, to say the least mammoth-like (Grindstone is a caterpillar leaving you gobsmacked!). It may be due to a maturity definitively achieved by the band, even in live show. The fact is that ever, in the previous concerts of the band I had attended, the result had been so exciting. I end this evening soaked in sweat, with ears that whistle and legs that cannot stand still. And with the awareness that bands like these and a venue like this should be defended with pride by all the sincerely alternative people.

Morkobot + Reznik – 21.01.2017 – Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Morkobot + Reznik – 21.01.2017 – Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Morkobot + Reznik – 01.21.2017 – Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Exactly 9 years after my last sighting, I find myself once again in front of Morkobot spaceship, this time landing on a mid-winter sunny Sunday at Ganz of Bicchio, while a few steps away unaware families are walking along the promenade in Viareggio.

Reznik, from Pisa, do the honours. Their alternative rock is dissonant and nervous, with solid foundations thanks to a really powerful bass. The guitar plays with perverse melodies in Jesus Lizard  style and with rhythmic fragments of Fugazi school, while the singer psychotic snarl crawls among the notes. It's like breathing the atmosphere of drunken Texas at the turn of the 80s and 90s. Aliens are not welcomed with melodic light signals in style Close Encounters of the Third Kind, yet with the disturbing memory of Roswell autopsy.

The response of the three extraterrestrials is an ultra-heavy metallic bombardment, launched at irregular rhythms difficult to understand for the human brain. Gummy elastic riffs alternate with square powerful blows. Almost ten years have passed since my last contact with Morkobot two basses, and compared to the past the sound has now become more metallic, digital, surgical, yet without losing visionary power. A new drummer, and more geometric compact songs. Twice requested by the terrestrials under the stage, the encore is dedicated to more dilated and psychedelic atmospheres, to remind us that space trips are not only hypertechnological labyrinthine nightmares, but also mental and spiritual journeys. Once again it was great to be abducted by these aliens.

Monster Magnet - Spine of God

Monster Magnet - Spine of God
(Glitterhouse Records, 1991)

Monster Magnet - Spine of God
(Glitterhouse Records, 1991)

In the 80s lysergic atmospheres disappeared from heavy music. The power of riffs could not be weakened by any conscience alteration. But at the beginning of the 90s, at the same time when Soundgarden reach the success with their version of Black Sabbath inspired heavy psychedelia, Monster Magnet rediscover the fascination of Hawkwind space rock. So heavy sounds are once again used to emphasize drug effects, and not only to celebrate pure strength as in the 80s. Spine of God is a cloud of smoke tarnishing the mind with its reverberated voices, obsessive heavy riffs and volcanic explosions of spacey effects. There is no trace of grunge depression in Monster Magnet music and so it will remain confined to underground territory (as a lot of stoner rock it will inspire). But its impact on rock music will be similar to the collision of two galaxies: psychedelia and heavy metal.

Elder – Reflections of a Floating World

Elder – Reflections of a Floating World
(Stickman Records, 2017)

Elder – Reflections of a Floating World
(Stickman Records, 2017)

In an era when music is devoured compulsively and distractedly, with the idea that music should be shaped by our sensitivity (and not, on the contrary, that our sensitivity should mature through music), Reflections of a Floating World is a revolutionary album in its own way. It is an album that needs a deep immersion, with wide open doors of perception, to absorb the complex sonic ocean that characterizes it. Six long contorted tracks, real coral reefs of progressive rock, within which it is wonderful to be carried away by the currents of the stoner riffs. But even more remarkable is to drown into them when vast pinkfoydian views open themselves in front of us. In these 10s where artwork is reduced to tiny jpeg files in our smartphone while listening to mp3s, it may sound like a nostalgic and "moralistic" act towards the present time to take the vinyl of Reflections of a Floating World in your hands, discard it, sniff it and, even before putting it onto the turntable, enter the floating world pictured on its cover. Yet the freshness of its songs shows how much this appeal to a typically 70s way of living the music has nothing to do with revivalism. Elder personality is much more solid than a superficial listener - who merely acknowledges High Tide guitar frenzy or Nektar and Camel melodic openings - may perceive. Elder do not oppose the present. In the impetuosity of their roaring waterfall of notes there is all the creativity and the overflowing energy of a current and present time. Breaking like a wave on the rocks of the past, all the impetus of "here and now" absorbs its essence and then vaporizes in unpredictable and unrepeatable sketches. Being on the shore of this floating world, and being overwhelmed by this wave, will make our sensitivity mature, and ourselves too.

Dark Buddha Rising - Inversum

Dark Buddha Rising - Inversum
(Neurot Recordings, 2015)

Dark Buddha Rising - Inversum
(Neurot Recordings, 2015)

The cure to hangovers comes from Finland and is called Inversum. Natural medicine created during the infinite winter nights of Northern Europe, it is an infusion of cosmic doom and dark space rock. Music to be slowly dissolved to facilitate its absorption. Two long tracks where synthetic drones and walls of valve distortion coexist, massaging the temples with hypnotic rhythms reminiscent of pagan rituals, balancing the stomach with constant low frequency waves. The contours of the melodies are blurred by psychedelic smokes rising in slow motion in a forest of echoes, and which sometimes turns into heavy Ufomammutic riffs or mystic songs performed by ultradoped monks. Commercialized by the Neurot Recordings pharmaceutical company and produced by the prolific Tampere music scene (in the collective Dark Buddha Rising there are members of Hexvessel, Mr. Peter Hayden, Atomikylä), Inversum is a medicine that can lead to loss of orientation, dilation of time perception, disintegration of the concept of body finitude, mystical visions. If for you these are contraindications, please stay away from this album. On the contrary, take Inversum at will.

Elav Stoner Open Air Fest - 08.07.2017 - Birrificio Elav (Comun Nuovo, BG)

Elav Stoner Open Air Fest - 08.07.2017 - Birrificio Elav (Comun Nuovo, BG)
[Karma to Burn + My Sleeping Karma + Toner Low + Monte Nero + Ride Paranoia]

Estate torrida e afosa.

Veramente gustosi!

Karma opposti.

Elav Stoner Open Air Fest - 07.08.2017 - Birrificio Elav (Comun Nuovo, BG)
[Karma to Burn + My Sleeping Karma + Toner Low + Monte Nero + Ride Paranoia]

Torrid and sultry summer. A boundless plain that smells of manure and smog. It takes fresh beer and stoner rock. These two ingredients can be found at Birrificio Elav, in the neighbourhood of Bergamo, where a (free admission) 2 days festival dedicated to sandy and valvular sounds has been organized. I'm here for the second day, starting around 6 pm, with the Sun still high in the sky.

The first ones to get tanned on stage are Ride Paranoia. Their alternative rock is a great aperitif to start the evening. Fresh like a Pils from the tap, they mix direct stoner rock riffs and catchy tunes (sons of Queens of the Stone Age) with an interesting electronic aftertaste, thanks to the use of synths. Really tasty!

Monte Nero, instead, have the toasted and bitter taste of a high-alcoholic stout. We are next to the southern stoner of Corrosion of Conformity, made acid by vocal harmonization reminiscent of Alice in Chains (particularly beautiful the voice of the bassist) and by some edgy noisy guitar arrangements, halfway between Fatso Jetson and Steve Albini bands. For my palate, their riffs lack a bit of incisiveness and their songs abound a bit too much in sung parts at the expense of the instrumental ones, but overall they are a great drink!

Sandwich, another great craft beer of the brewery hosting us, and I am back under the stage for Toner Low. I finally attend to a gig of the Dutch band after more than 10 years. At that time it was a concert at Cox 18 in Milan, and they literally wiped me away with their extremely ultra-dilated riffs. Since the time of their first (amazing) full length has passed so long, and the trio, in addition to having changed bassist (now in formation is the former 7Zuma7 Miranda Vandervoot), has lowered even more their tuning and completely abolished high frequencies. Their music is a magma of distortion at the limit of the infrasound, completely stunning the audience (though unfortunately it does not affect mosquitoes, chewing me up for the whole evening!). At the end of their concert I feel dazed as if had drunk dozens of beers! And although the experience was certainly engaging, I miss a bit the attack they used to have when they were still characterized by a range of frequencies audible to the human ear.

Greeted by a great audience enthusiasm, accompanied by a light breeze and black clouds with the potential for the classic summer storm for excess moisture, My Sleeping Karma get on stage. Their progressive space rock is pulsating and dynamic, dragged by a rhythmic section that is precise and rich in groove. Oriental melodies, post rock arpeggios and liquid sounds. Everything flows, continuously. Just a moment and the clouds are gone, carried away by the fluid and unstoppable music of the band. There is not that unpredictability that one could expect from a musical genre free of constraints like this. No improvisation, no tiny granules of dust to dirty the songs. Everything is as sparkling as water and solidly built, even though the buildings of the German band are as surreal as those of an Escher painting, with stairways chasing each other in every direction and mirrors reflecting each structure. Real architects of musical composition capable of creating a fascinating music.

After having been purified by My Sleeping Karma aquatic music, the return to alcohol excesses with Karma to Burn. Opposed karma. Since the first riff - groovy, dirty and powerful - I understand that the band is more compact and dynamic than the concert I attended to exactly a year ago. Killing riffs, valve sound, energy flowing through the audience, and finally mosh. Soon, however, a guitar string breaks. Will Mechum replaces the instrument, but the substitute loses part of the grim and rumbling strength of the Les Paul. But energy never fails. Pure stoner rock. The true and genuine one. Built on incredibly powerful riffs. When also a rope of the second guitar breaks, Mechum is forced to change the string of his Les Paul and he finally plays that again. So the concert ends as it began, with that powerful sound, smelling of tequila and cigarettes, difficult to get into the brain staying still. The final beer is dedicated to Karma to Burn, a band to which Italian citizenship should be honored, given the many concerts in our country, in recent times. And of course it is also dedicated to those who have organized an amazing festival like this! Cheers!

The Freeks – Shattered

The Freeks – Shattered
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2016)

Intanto godiamoci queste scariche elettriche. No future.

The Freeks – Shattered
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2016)

You born punk. You do not become it. And if you were born punk, even if you want to hide it, your mohawk will always emerge. As he has always hidden his mohawk under a layer of hard rock riffs and stoner dust, in Fu Manchu and Nebula Ruben Romano has always revealed his punk hardcore soul up to the point of making unique and personal the music of his bands. With The Freeks - where he sings and plays guitar instead of drums - Romano unleashes his proto-punk spirit through songs that have the rough energy of Detroit bands in the late 60s / early 70s, the lysergic digressions with which Hawkwind used to entertain English underground festivals, as well as the drunk party frenzy of New York Dolls. Third album of the band, Shattered flows fluid, free, uncontrollable, like an evening together with an infinite number of beers. Dirty, groovy, overflowing energy, with some dizziness due to (psychedelic) excesses. Fun that will sooner or later turn into drunken meditations on the infinite universe, to finally end up with vomit and headache. But this is a problem that a real punk does not stand. Meanwhile, let's enjoy these electric discharges. No future.
