Gorilla Pulp + The Re-Stoned + Pretty Lightning + Ananda Mida feat. Conny Ochs - 11.05.2019 - Desert Fox Fest V- Circolo Bikers (Cadeo, PC)

Gorilla Pulp + The Re-Stoned + Pretty Lightning + Ananda Mida feat. Conny Ochs - 11.05.2019 - Desert Fox Fest V- Circolo Bikers (Cadeo, PC)

I Pretty Lightning, dicevo.

Gorilla Pulp + The Re-Stoned + Pretty Lightning + Ananda Mida feat. Conny Ochs - 05.11.2019 - Desert Fox Fest V- Circolo Bikers (Cadeo, PC)

How did I get to the Desert Fox Fest? Why am I wearing a Scialpi (or Shalpy) t-shirt? To find an answer to these questions we should retrace the journey that begins when some shady guys plan an alien abduction to my damage and then run me around for two days eating and drinking, through breathtaking views in mystical and rock n 'roll places. A journey which is complicated to retrace, and of which Desert Fox Fest is one of the - absolutely unexpected - parts. Without internet connection, while a flood is about to fall, I find myself thrown into Piacenza surroundings at a festival which is revolutionized due to bad weather. Bewildered by all this unpredictability, I let myself be carried like a child to the rides.

What will be the first attraction? American singer on really fluid and ever-changing psychedelic hard rock: Ananda Mida with Conny Ochs. Really?! The fact that  I have a really different memory of them depends on the fact that I was tossed around all day like I was inside a (full of alcohol) washing machine or it is due to the fact they have changed from their 2017 concert?! With a charismatic frontman, who looks like a crossbreed between the erotic dreams of 70s and 90s adolescents, their sinuous flowing music loses something in lysergic power, and acquires frenzy and unpredictability. The singer's clean voice is a rain that has washed away some of the desert dust, but which, at the same time, has improved rock charm.

Of the German Pretty Lightning I listened to only a few songs because the storm had calmed down and I took advantage of it to eat something (and drink a little more, oh well) in the outside area where the main stage should have been, unfortunately sacrificed due to force majeure. Despite the upheavals (some bands have been canceled), the festival is still cool, well organized and with a relaxed friendly atmosphere. Pretty Lightning, I said. Only a few songs ... but what kind of songs! For me, who I am a great Black Angels fan, the garage psychedelia freed by the German duo is hilarious. An essential and dynamic drummer, a sea of echoes and reverbs and a voice that looks like a cat under acid. Absolutely to be seen live again!

Fear and loathing at Desert Fox Fest with a picture under Padre Pio statue, which stands out in the middle of the town square (and to which counterposes an absurd Batman fountain in the concert area), and then we're back in. The Re-Stoned first notes are enough to find ourselves catapulted into a parallel world where Russian spaceships fly through the gorges of the American Grand Canyon. The Moscow trio fixed the space equipment that escaped the Soviet collapse with Western methods. Typically American methods such as stoner riffs and desert dilations, but above all European ones, such as progressive engineering studies (see the amazing cover of Red by King Crimson). A hyperkinetic, technically terrific, drummer contributes to make brainy - yet always enthralling - the music of the band, which perfectly fits into the psych/prog genre made of reworked jams so dear to Monkey3, My Sleeping Karma and Yuri Gagarin, even if with a greater interest in riffs and power, and a lower predisposition to hypnotic and obsessive repetitions. Like any good psychedelic band even The Re-Stoned do not hint at finishing the fuel of their spaceship and transport us for an infinite/indefinite time on the most distant galaxies. Great discovery!

After The Re-Stoned interstellar journeys, we return to the Earth, with a sweaty party-loving afterparty. Gorilla Pulp are tonight's perfect closure. Their alcoholic and direct hard rock needs a couple of tracks to warm up, but then it literally catches fire. Thin Lizzy guitar duels and beautiful groovy mighty riffs (reminiscent of Kadavar and Duel's reinterpretation of the 70s) are the best thing ever to finish with a bang! Their set flows in a flash and leaves us with the feeling of a big party that doesn't want to end. And now, what will be the next stop of this journey?

Sonic Ritual Fest - 20.05.2017 - Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

Sonic Ritual Fest - 20.05.2017 - Bloom (Mezzago, MB)
[Yawning Man + Duel + The Cosmic Dead + Ecstatic Vision + Doctor Cyclops + The Clamps + Ananda Mida]

E quindi subito giù a sentire i The Clamps.

Trascinanti e coinvolgenti in maniera incredibile.

Infine Yawning Man.

Sonic Ritual Fest - 05.20.2017 - Bloom (Mezzago, MB)
[Yawning Man + Duel + The Cosmic Dead + Ecstatic Vision + Doctor Cyclops + The Clamps + Ananda Mida]

Not to have a full year long pause between a Heavy Psych Sounds Fest and the other, Sonic Ritual Fest at the beginning of summer is the right way to avoid losing the vice. The (double) stage of Bloom is also a location that I really enjoy, so the event can not be lost.

I sit in the tiny cinema at Bloom first floor and the first band - Ananda Mida - is unfortunately already playing. Twice on two I find them as opener at a festival, and I have not been able yet to listen to them as I wish. My fault. Also because the 15' I enjoy are really remarkable: sinuous melodies, hypnotic gragging rhythms... I really wanted to listen to them for the whole set (I - half - console myself with their LP)!

The stage change is tight because the alternation with the main stage is without pauses. And so I immediately run downstairs to listen to The Clamps. Straight for straight riffs one after the other, fired in the face without hesitations and without stops. Some slight slowdown on the drums, but the groove is really deadly and their set really engaging.

I grab a beer and go upstairs  for Doctor Cyclops set. Many influences and lots of meat on the fire. From clear references to illustrious fathers such as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, passing through more progressive and lysergic asides and openings. Some effective and more interesting sparks, some more frayed and disconnected to my hears. I got to listen to them again, maybe on album.

Since there are no breaks, I take one in a (to me) convenient moment and I have sandwich, beer and cigarette outdoors during Giobia set - heard live numerous times in the last year and a half, and also scheduled for nest Saturday at Surfer Joe Vintage Festival.

Back in the mini-cinema for Ecstatic Vision and I admit that the name fits them like a glove! Their concert is perhaps the most amazing of the whole evening and it really makes me excited. Incredibly fascinating and engaging. Blues, psychedelia, the sounds of Detroit in the 60s and 70s...and much more. Everything is conveyed by a performance that can not leave anyone indifferent and stern. With a really histrionic singer who launches the microphone and its stand and "steals" the one of the saxophonist to continue the show! And that imposes an enchore with loud applause and cries of approval. The small room and armchairs could not really fit this astonishing quartet!

And then it's time for The Cosmic Dead and the mood changes completely. We are still in psychedelic aresa, but here the atmospheres are denser and darker, more electronic, more oppressive. Still a trip, but not dazzled by light and vital energy. Rather, stunned by almost drones and feedbacks. Sounds so high to be devastating and the impression is that of an almost endless jam.

The atmospheres get warm, sunny and dusty again with Duel set. Concert I was waiting for, because the new Witchbanger is finally out and - although I already had some taste of the new songs in October - I am really anxious to listen to the new setlist. The four from Austin are always incredibly good and engaging and manage to overcome some technical issues, which tend to impose Jeff Henson guitar on the rest of the band and especially on Tom Frank guitar. But the groove, energy and skill of the four Texans is such that soon everything else goes into the background. The new songs rock the world and the groove pedal is all pressed down. Surreal listen to them lying on the seats, when their music forces us to headbang and shake as if there was no tomorrow.

Finally Yawning Man. Desert rock in its quintessence. Songs that capture you and carry you elsewhere. You waver on it and lose time coordinates. You are no longer in Brianza. It's no longer May. What matters is the sound wave that drags you with its rhythm and takes you away with its riffs, arpeggios and melodic lines. Mario Lalli bass marks the path on which Gary Arce guitar builds an itinerary to follow with wide open eyes (and ears) to absorb all its beauty. Their concert fascinates me and conquers so much that I already know that tomorrow night I will listen to them once again a few minutes away from home!

Psychedelia and heavy sonority are a winning couple. Festivals like this are the most obvious proof of it!
