Massimo Volume - 03.03.2019 - Lumiere (Pisa)

Massimo Volume - 03.03.2019 - Lumiere (Pisa)

Massimo Volume - 03.03.2019 - Lumiere (Pisa)

A constant sense of anguish. An exhausting, obsessive, rhythmic-melodic line that hypnotizes. A voice - words - that dig inside, put a worm in the head, mirror the anxieties and fears so real as now atavistic.
I did not really know what to expect from Massimo Volume concert - a longtime band, with a just released beautiful latest album, that I had never heard live before. Whatever I expected, it honestly no longer matters. What I found in front of me - and above all in my ears - inside the dark and crowded Lumiere was an hour and a half of music and words (yes, I stress it again, words: because words count as much as music, in this case) that kept me glued on my tiny chair, yet at the same time suspended in midair. If it is certainly true that Massimo Volume music naturally fits in the indie tag, it is equally true that storing it there would be at least reductive. Especially in the live set, a particularly intense darkwave/post-punk soul emerges, a post-rock structure that rarefies and embellishes every single song, some noise drifts that contribute to alienate the listener and the listening experience. Emidio Clementi voice is almost a mantra, narrating - at times declaiming - words that exude emotions, often painted in grey. And his look helps to emphasize the idea, the feeling, of being in the presence of a minister of desolate souls, who at times shows the way, at times slams our ghosts in our face. All this while immersed in the darkness intermittently lightened by three luminous globes, vague and wandering on the horizon line of the stage, wrapped in the "fog". It's amazing to stille be able to be touched.

Low – Double Negative

Low – Double Negative
(Sub Pop, 2018)

Low – Double Negative
(Sub Pop, 2018)

I knew Low one summer evening in 2003, in Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence. They played as support band for Radiohead, and behind them there was an amazing view of the town from up above the hill, with the curves of Arno sliding between monuments. The delicate, fragile and romantic music of the American band puzzled most of the audience, who was waiting for the generational anthems of Karma Police, Creep and High and Dry, not realizing that Radiohead, on tour to promote Hail to the Thief, were already gone beyond. Actually, they had come "back", scarifying their songs from the rush of choral emotionality towards an intimacy and a solitude full of autumnal atmospheres and electronic experiments. An intimacy perfectly in tune with that owned by Low - icon of that independent rock to which Thom Yorke's band was watching with increasing admiration. Fifteen years later, listening to Double Negative, it is even more evident how much Radiohead (and with them Low) were right, and their public wrong. The rock we knew in the 90s is now dead, and what remains of it are splinters of melody and noise hidden in the subsoil, where electric and electronic coexist. Fragments that, in this 2018, Low put on record as if they were personal reflections and life moments collected in a diary, without an organized and linear plot, nor easily decipherable. It is no longer time for acts of resistance based on the sharing of suffering and inadequacy to be contained in memorable radio singles. The new millennium has generated fragmentation of society, alienation and loneliness. Through ethereal melodies and melancholic vocal interlaces, demolished by pulsations of electronic noise at the limits of industrialism, Low sing the by now occurred disintegration - both personal and social. Never so close to fifteen-years-ago-Radiohead, but also never so close to Bark Psychosis' long silences, or to My Bloody Valentine's melodic dissolution, not to mention the experiments that from Peter Gabriel come to Chelsea Wolfe, Low give us a music which representative of the present in which we live. A music that in its profound obscurity is a light of hope precisely because it exists in spite of everything.

Dinosaur Jr – Green Mind

Dinosaur Jr – Green Mind
(Sire, Warner Bros, 1991)

Dinosaur Jr – Green Mind
(Sire, Warner Bros, 1991)

Indolence got the power. J Mascis lazy voice and his loose relaxed guitar come out of the college radio circuit exactly when the grunge phenomenon (of which J had been one of the fundamental inspirations behind), breaks down the barrier of separation between underground and mainstream music. Yet it is not thanks to the reflected glory that the band signs for a major and gathers the attention of a big audience. The credit for this success lays on Mascis capability to represent with sincerity a bored generation, grown up in a wealthy society able to anesthetize any juvenile instinct of rebellion like the American one in the 80s. A generation that passively oppose the hedonist ideals of that era through self-satisfied detachment from the collectivity, self-enclosure, resignation. Entirely composed by Mascis, despite being the first album without Lou Barlow at the bass, Green Mind shows a communicative desire no longer exclusively directed towards the interior. Mascis seems to realize that there is a world around him, and he does not seem so disinterested in manifesting his self-satisfied apathy. It may be for a greater cleaning of those corners dirty with noise of the first records, or it may be for a more explicit melodic sensitivity, the fact is that if Green Mind on one hand loses the charm of the imperfection and ingenuity of the previous albums, on the other it rises up as one of the most representative records of 90s American rock.

Pixies - Bossanova

Pixies - Bossanova
(4AD, 1990)

Pixies - Bossanova
(4AD, 1990)

90s alternative music wouldn't have been the same without the albums Pixies published in the second half of the previous decade. With their mixture of sugary melodic sweetness, crazy irony and sharp dissonant guitars, and with the alternation of quiet and noise explosions, the acid candies packed by the band will be delicious inspiration for the alternative universe that will soon become mainstream. A moment before this explosion takes place, changing the balance between independent rock and chart rock, Pixies publish the record in which the border between pop and experimentation is more labile - kind of premonition of what will happen in the musical scene of the immediate future. If the previous albums had their main feature in (deliberately discordant) contrasts, in Bossanova everything appears in perfect symbiosis. Surf reverbs and metal rides harmoniously combine in the initial Cecilia Ann (Surftones cover), as well as infantile obsessive lullabies merge naturally with hints of dissonance and electric noises in The Happening. Compared to the previous two albums, melodies become less crooked and, while maintaining a bittersweet aftertaste, they are softer and more dreamy. The band from Boston fine tunes the recipe for its candies: perhaps not as destabilizing and amazing as in the past (and therefore less appreciated by old-time fans), but more digestible and tasty for an audience now ready for the mix of melody and noise.

Codeine - Frigid Stars LP

Codeine - Frigid Stars LP
(Glitterhouse Records, Sub Pop, 1990)

Estate 1990. A momenti intimo, a momenti epico. Black Emperor.

Codeine - Frigid Stars LP
(Glitterhouse Records, Sub Pop, 1990)

Summer of 1990. In a Brooklyn basement Codeine record their debut album. From that basement a desolate, disillusioned, jaded music comes out.  It takes your breath away as summer sultriness, it isolates and envelops you as autumn fog, it hypnotizes you as the lights of a metropolis watched through a car window running on a wet road. Intimate and hypnotic, it slides slowly into the void of a loneliness without alternatives. A noise rock with delicate dissonant arpeggios, rhythmic strokes in slow motion and enveloping glimpses of distortion. Nihilistic and tired, Frigid Stars is an abyss towards which the listener is fatally drawn to. Sometimes it sounds intimate, sometimes epic. Never too emphatic. Existential and cathartic, in its simplicity Frigid Stars is original and unique  as certain albums by Neil Young and Nick Drake. And also a source of inspiration for all post rock and slowcore bands - from Low to Mogwai, from Bark Psychosis to Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff plus Early Singles

Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff plus Early Singles
(Sub Pop, 1990)

Suoni super-fuzzosi, esplosioni noise, accelerazioni punk e rallentamenti stoner: nessun altro come i Mudhoney negli anni '80 sarebbe riuscito a descrivere cosa stava nascendo a Seattle.

(Sub Pop, 1990)

The spontaneity of its underground years is what success mainly tooks away from Seattle music. This compilation of Mudhoney early singles and EPs is probably the best evidence of that phase. Abandoned Green River, Mark Arm creates a new sound that combines Stooges sweaty garage rock with Sonic Youth noise rock. One of the first revitalizations of the music of the past, towards innovations and philosophy of independent rock, key to success of grunge rock. Since the cover photo, this compilation expresses the energy of an expanding musical scene, yet still confined in small clubs. Hyperfuzzed sounds, noise explosions, punk accelerations and stoned slowdowns: nobody could describe what it was being born in Seattle as Mudhoney did in the 80s. And nobody will be able to repeat it with the same irony and spontaneity.

Sonic Youth - Goo

Sonic Youth - Goo
(DGC, 1990)

Sonic Youth - Goo
(DGC, 1990)

Daydream Nation was an earthquake in Sonic Youth career. The critical acclaim of that album attracted the interest of major labels, and so - quickly - a symbol of American independent rock had to face with its loss of freedom. The following album - Goo - is easy listening as no other Sonic Youth release since then: so it was considered as a betrayal of independent ideals. We don’t know how much Geffen influence had transformed Sonic Youth music, but we now understand how much Goo transformed alternative rock. Dissonance control and its integration in punk rock songs was a feature of Sonic Youth music since Sister, but the capacity to reconcile experimentation with pure energy reached its highest peak in Goo. Direct, immediate and powerful, Goo is focused on melodies and songs structure. A forerunner of the alternative rock explosion near to come.

The Jesus Lizard - Head

The Jesus Lizard - Head
(Touch And Go, 1990)

The Jesus Lizard - Head
(Touch And Go, 1990)

Left behind the blues influence of the noisy and deviated band called Scratch Acid, singer David Yow and bass guitar player David Sims meet the producer Steve Albini and the guitarist Duane Denison, landing to a dissonant and perverted noise rock.  With a real drummer (McNeilly)  and no drum machine (used in EP Pure, 1989) The Jesus Lizard compose an abrasive album, exciting for its rhythmic dynamism and disturbing for its melodic deconstruction. Head can expand itself dramatically with its 2-3 minutes songs, because of alienating Denison arpeggios and riffs, perfectly fitted in a rhythmic structure in constant motion, but deeply hallucinated as a disarticulated Joy Division skeleton. Yow vomits a desperate nihilism that doesn’t expect to be understand, in a album that will be the father of 90’s discomfort.

Fugazi - Repeater

Fugazi - Repeater
(Dischord Records, 1990)

Fugazi - Repeater
(Dischord Records, 1990)

First Fugazi long playing is the definite association of political and personal hardcore visions, of sociological and existentialist poetics. It’s a mainstay of hardcore ideals, because it suggests a new, more mature, principle. From “Do It Yourself” production to social problems lyrical themes, from dissonant and destructured music to independent management of the art, Repeater embodies all the coherence of Fugazi “Post hardcore”. It digs a trench against mainstream music world, so much in ethical aspects as much in musical ones. It approaches to a more intimate and emotive vision of punk anger, directing it against those aspects of the society inducing alienation through exasperated individualism. Articulated, crooked and angular, Repeater is a symbol of hardcore and independent rock evolution.

True Widow - Avvolgere

True Widow - Avvolgere
(Relapse Records, 2016)

True Widow - Avvolgere
(Relapse Records, 2016)

In the midst of that coca-party represented by the 80s, some losers were (for their own will) out of the yuppie party. Their tired disillusioned bored attitude, was (passively) opposing the overflowing energy of those years and it had the complacent weakness of American indie bands (Dinosaur Jr in the lead) as its own soundtrack. Thirty years have passed since that party, and the hangovers of the wild excesses of that era are plain for everyone. Musically inspired by the exhaustion of the independent rock of those years, however True Widow has got a different mentality from that of its older brothers. Indeed it does not even have anymore the strength to mock the social consequences of the apparent state of well-being. The Texan trio is immersed up to its neck in the degrading aftermath of a colossal hangover. In contrast to the bittersweet melodies of shoegaze taste, the heavy cavernous sounds of ragged guitars are mud which bogs and slows down all movements. Songs drag on heavy, narcoleptic and foggy, yet they never lose melodic immediacy and a hint of melancholy romance. Losers - and proud of it! - True Widow fit into that path traced a few years ago by the most melodic Jesu, also recently undertaken by Pinkish Black. A path where every glimmer of light is in precarious balance among walls of distortion, and does not have the energy to depart from it.

The Gooch Palms + Unkle Funkle - 24.11.2016 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

The Gooch Palms + Unkle Funkle - 24.11.2016 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

The Gooch Palms + Unkle Funkle - 11.24.2016 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

Pre-weekend party with a concert at Cafè Albatross.

Unkle Funkle, first of all. He is a strange crossbreed between J Mascis and a Physics student lost in a 30 years ago videogame. With admirable audacity he launches "improbable" bases (whose sounds are reassessing those of Bontempi System 5), and with emotional ardor and passion he performs touching reinterpretations of 80s pop classics. Three guitar notes and two tons of shamelessness. Extrapolating from the reactions of those present: "If I were completely wasted, this would be the best concert of my life!"

In their taste for excess and kitsch, The Gooch Palms are definitely not pure and simple entertainment: they do play and they do it well! The Australian duo (two voices, guitar for him, floor tom + snare drum for her) seems to have an overdose of Coca Cola and fluo bear-shaped gummy candies, considering how much exaggerated, bubbly, sparkling they sound. Their garage-pop-punk'n'roll is sugary as (pink!) cotton candy, but it sounds by no means trite. On the contrary! Maybe for the punkish nature à la Ramones, or thanks to some phrasings reminiscent of certain 80s American indie rock, constantly on the edge between catchy melody and subtle lo-fi dissonance, or maybe for their groove, the fact is that it is really worth to see them live!
