Paradise Lost – Obsidian

Paradise Lost – Obsidian
(Nuclear Blast, 2020)

Paradise Lost – Obsidian
(Nuclear Blast, 2020)

Each town has a safe inn, open til late at the night. A shelter we can count on in those nights when  outside the storm is raging. Paradise Lost is that place, in the universe of heavy metal. When outside there are only silence and desolation, and we no longer recognize our fellowmen, the English band shows us the entrance through an arpeggio with an ancient flavour. In a moment we are in another world, in another era. A tavern in Winterfell, in the far north of Westeros. Inside it there isn't the tired resignation of a place corroded by habit, yet the passionate warmth of a hideout of partisans planning battles. Here we find familiar faces, old friends who do not want to give up, and who show inexhaustible energy, result of successful alchemy. So, while a pandemic freezes the world of music, not only annihilating concerts, but also inhibiting the release of records (which, in this digital age, do not bring any profit to the bands if they don't go on tour), Paradise Lost go fearlessly against this trend and release one of their best records. Combining darkwave romanticism and heavy metal power, thanks also to the precious contribution of the young drummer Waltteri Väyrynen, Paradise Lost compose their most epic and grandiose album, without ever losing the introspective focus that has always characterized them. The inn's light is on, amidst the blizzard. It is up to us to come in and join the resistance.

Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats – Wasteland

Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats – Wasteland
(Rise Above Records, 2018)

Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats – Wasteland
(Rise Above Records, 2018)

A post apocalyptic bulletin in pure John Carpenter style introduces us into the dystopian world imagined by Kevin Starrs. A population under continuous surveillance, with its mind emptied by hypnotic messages transmitted by a technology at the service of power. To tell the "bad trip" of some dissidents who succeeded in reprogramming their mind and escaping from the city, but then found themselves in a wild land ruled by unprecedented violence, Starrs colours his music in a blood-red so much brilliant to be dazzling. Escape from New York and Mad Max take on the surreal contours of a Rob Zombie's remake, while maintaining the dusty coat of the old 50s sci-fi movies. With their fifth album and a consolidated recognition, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats continue to sound dirty like an old B movie, even in their most colourful release. Their attack against technology still has the sound of a band rehearsing in a damp basement, even now that the sinister proto doom atmospheres are ever closer to a hallucinated psychedelia that seems to come from the Mansion Family (or the Black Angels who "got high" with an old horror). The dark and lopsided riffs have got a less disruptive impact than in the past, because now the absolute protagonist is melody, following unusual directions thanks to beautiful vocal harmonisations. Rhythm and tension increase with the passing of songs, proving how much Starrs' narrative capacity has matured since the times of Vol. 1, to which, however, this Wasteland seems to be near once again, from a strictly musical point of view.

L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII

L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII
(Subsound Records, 2018)

Processo alchemico perfettamente riuscito.

L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII
(Subsound Records, 2018)

It all starts here. The alchemical transformation takes place during two concerts in 2007 in Genzano. It is here that Loosin 'o' Frequencies become an instrumental band and capture this moment in a recording that only today, more than 10 years later, takes on physical form. And it is with this recording in its hands, in 2008, that the band decides to change its name in L'Ira del Baccano and to make its music available to everyone, in the liquid form of mp3 published online. Since then the recording of those concerts has solidified in the conscience of many fans of the underground, contributing to make L'Ira del Baccano one of the most interesting names as live act. The last, indispensable, transformation, allows us to insert in our discography, alongside the two studio albums, a physical copy of this precious document, to all effects the first brainchild of the Roman band. We cross the alchemical gate (Si non sedes is is an epigraph engraved on this monument hidden in the heart of Rome) to realize how much the band was already then mature to conceive what came later. That is a dilatation and deformation of heavy sounds, sometimes doom and sabbath influenced, in vast airy progressive suites with a fluid and iridescent structure, on the borders of space rock (echoes of Coma Divine and Space Ritual beyond the door). Transmutation of lead into gold, through free flowing jams. Music freed from genres limitations, able to absorb past and present, transforming them into an absolutely personal future. Perfectly successful alchemical process.

Electric Wizard + Ufomammut + Humulus – 18.11.2018 – Live Club (Trezzo sull’Adda, MI)

Electric Wizard + Ufomammut + Humulus – 18.11.2018 – Live Club (Trezzo sull’Adda, MI)

Electric Wizard + Ufomammut + Humulus – 11.18.2018 – Live Club (Trezzo sull’Adda, MI)

I love Electric Wizard and Ufomammut as if they were my elder brothers. I grew up with their music, and at the same time, they grew up before my eyes. They opened my eardrums to new sounds and gave me indispensable advice (especially with regard to unmissable b-movies... certainly not to pick girls up, since their music is not the most suitable for the purpose). Being together with both, tonight, is a dutiful thanks to them, and for this reason I decide to be present in Trezzo sull'Adda despite the concerts of Dark Buddha Rising and Fuoco Fatuo in Bologna and Kikagaku Moyo in Ravenna.

The first to get on the imposing Live Club stage are the hosts Humulus. Their stoner rock drenched in grunge melodies is the perfect starter before tonight's meaty bits. A little excited for the responsibility of warming up the audience waiting for the legends of the genre, but they are doing very well, alternating sandy huge riffs, psychedelic arpeggios and warm engaging vocal melodies. The road taken is the right one (as evidenced by the latest album Reverently Heading into Nowhere) in order to rival the older brothers in the future.

Ufomammut let me enter their bedroom to make me feel how the low frequencies make the walls tremble. Dazzling psychedelic films to amplify the stunning effect of music. They assure me that they did not fix my beer with any drugs... or maybe they say that just because they're afraid I could say something to mom?! I do not understand why glasses does not shatter under the gummy waves of distortion, which swells in a cloud of noise to fill every space, and from which only Vita robust drums manage to emerge, to show us rhythm and structure in the sound chaos. The most physical and groovy Ufomammut concert among those I attended to (and they are 7!). A band that looks into the eyes its audience with the self-confidence of those who have collected what they deserve, but also with the humility of those who feel that there is always room to learn even now. How not love a brother like that?

Then in the really doped brother's room, Electric Wizard. The one mom fears I would take as an example. Feedbacks introducing Witchcult Today riff (and that will accompany every moment of "silence", like a constant tinnitus induced by music listened to exaggerated volumes) are dense smoke of marijuana, through which I see clips of old horror, post apocalyptic or sex exploitation movies. After 25 years of continuous line-up changes, it's extraordinary to hear how Jus Oborn's band still sounds compact and overwhelming. Over time, a layer of dust (of hidden origin) covered the vomit with which the band had soiled its room between the late 90s and early 2000s, but the toxic moments continue to surface between a riff and the other. Spots of heavy psychedelia stain with acid colours the intense black of the sepulchral doom played by the band, as visionary fragments in a 60s horror movie. Far from being detoxified, the music of the electric big brother is so powerful and cohesive - even in the manipulation of dissonances and larsen effects - to seem, today, fully able to control his excesses. And thanks to perfectly balanced sounds, he gives me as a present one of his best concerts (tonight the fifth!).

Messa - Feast for Water

Messa - Feast for Water
(Aural Music, 2018)

Immersione profonda.

Messa - Feast for Water
(Aural Music, 2018)

Deep immersion. In the ocean of this Earth. In the swamp of this Humanity. At the pure sources of the ego. Along the rivers of being. In the lakes of the here and now. The expressive urgency of an immanent and inescapable imminent. Messa second album marks an enormous growth compared to the already wonderful Belfry (2016). Growth both from a musical point of view and from a communicative and emotional one. Sometimes almost on tiptoe, like sleepwalkers suspended in midair, we go through oneiric landscapes, skillfully sketched by a few indispensable keyboard notes supported by minimalist drums (as in Leah). Sometimes instead we are dragged in a whirlwind of emotions, as in a race through a forest of fears, with a guitar that commands us like the flute of the Pied Piper (for example in The Seer and She knows). The most diverse seeds bloom in the music of the quartet from Cittadella. From the wide open spaces of dark ambient to the deep caves of doom. From the refined occult rock atmospheres to almost jazz passages, opening scenarios which are reminiscent of Lynch soundtracks (She knows). And often these multiple souls coexist and manifest themselves even within the same song, since there is an almost progressive rock structure at the base of their composition. In all this, on all this, a voice of beauty, power and capacity as few. A sort of feminine Orpheus that enchants the listener, taking him where she wants, showing him what she wants. At times as moving as Anneke Van Giersbergen, other times with the evocative power of Lisa Gerrard. But basically Sara's voice is so expressive and fascinating precisely because, extremely personal, it escapes labels and the game of similarities. Feast for Water is an album with an almost shamanic force, which feeds on ancestral images and feelings, capable of touching (and making resonate) the deepest and most intimate strings. Dare to immerse yourself in its waters, let your ear listen to the song of the Sirens.

Monsternaut – Enter the Storm

Monsternaut – Enter the Storm
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2018)

Monsternaut – Enter the Storm
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2018)

The Chevrolet Chevelle that Monsternaut had stolen from Fu Manchu has now been transformed into a heavy truck with a trailer. The car with which the three Finns had raced along the territories of the most adrenaline stoner with two great self-produced EPs then reissued in a single LP by Heavy Psych Sounds in 2016, is now a 20 tons articulated lorry moving in slow motion and crushing everything it meets on its way. No more burning accelerations, or screeching or spinning out. Freedom of movement and agility are drastically reduced in favour of a strong determined pace that does not fear obstacles. Riffs are still ultra-pumped up thanks to a fuzz full of diesel, but the exhaust gas is denser than ever, its colour close to the black of doom metal. Monsternaut took their driving license at Scott Hill's driving school and the style of reference remains the one learned by the blond American guitarist, but the Finns have realized that open folding hood and sunglasses are not suitable for all seasons at their latitudes. Therefore they equipped with a more solid vehicle, perhaps not the most suitable to bring the surf board to the beach or a beer crate to a party, but perfect for storing wood for the winter.

High Reeper – High Reeper

High Reeper – High Reeper
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2018)

High Reeper – High Reeper
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2018)

Ozzy Osbourne has got countless children around the world. The last one was born in 2016 in Philadelphia and he is called High Reeper. Ozzy may not recognize it, but there is no need for a DNA analysis to realize who the real father is. High Reeper has got the toxic frenzy of Black Sabbath at the time of Master of Reality, but also the funeral gait and the obscure look of Birmingham band's debut album. We do not know exactly who the mother is, but surely she must have the energy and groove of Californian stoner rock and a pinch of punk effrontery - features making the baby an uncontrollable forge of funny riffs with overwhelming groove. High Reeper is still a child and he faithfully follows in the footsteps of his father (and his various uncles - Pentagram and Saint Vitus above all), but his imagination foreshadows excellent grades in the school of proto-metal and retro-rock to which he has just registered. Deskmate of his brother Beastemaker, High Reeper has got a less explicit passion for horror rock, but a more obvious attraction for motorbike rumbles and accelerations. Hoping that with its growth the band will fully develop its personality (maybe collecting some bad grades, starting to repudiate parents, and attending bad friends), in the meantime we enjoy the enthralling songs of this debut.

Electric Wizard – Wizard Bloody Wizard

Electric Wizard – Wizard Bloody Wizard
(Witchfinder Records, Spinefarm Records, 2017)

Tutto è destinato a divenire polvere.

Electric Wizard – Wizard Bloody Wizard
(Witchfinder Records, Spinefarm Records, 2017)

Everything is doomed to become dust. Sooner or later, inevitably, everything dries up and crumbles like dry mud. Electric Wizard sonic slime had already gone through this process at the time of Witchcult Today, dehydrating its dripping cosmic sludge in a dry primordial doom metal. At that time that skeletal essentiality sounded so disconcerting for fans of the extreme side of the band as shocking for an entire generation of musicians ready to draw inspiration. After falling into an overdose of heavy drugs and space bad trips with the two following albums, the electric sorcerer descends again into the crypt and ventures even deeper, to breathe the stale air of occult rock, when this was not yet called doom. Wrapped in spiderwebs and covered with a thick layer of dust, Wizard Bloody Wizard sounds muffled and foggy like an underground heavy psych record from the early 70s. A rhythmic section much softer than those of the past accentuates the feeling of being immersed in a cloud of marijuana, while a bleak psychedelic blues resounds among the walls of stone (Mourning of the Magicians). The fact that the depths of the crypt are inhabited today by many other sorcerers (some of whom, like Uncle Acid, with a deeper and more mature melodic sensitivity) does not take away the right of Jus Oborn and his disciples to be part of the dark Sabbath, by themselves brought back into vogue with their 2007 album. The wizard is aged, shrivelled and dusty, but if there is a black mass to be celebrated, he will certainly be its minister.

Monolord - Rust

Monolord - Rust
(RidingEasy Records, 2017)

Monolord - Rust
(RidingEasy Records, 2017)

If Empress Rising was an astonishing debut and, just one year later, Vænir had confirmed (and increased) the value of the band, Rust is the further progression and consecration of Monolord as one of the most interesting doom reality currently around. Undisputed its cornerstones - the constantly distorted bass by Mika Häkki, the masterfully heavy and rhythmically marked drums by Esben Willems and the space voice, saturated with effects, by Thomas Jäger - the Swedish trio punctuates its third chapter with significant new elements. For example, the keyboard intro of the title track, which sounds really unexpected. Or the violin in the outro of Wormland, growing the melancholy of the mighty, yet always ultra-groovy, riffs typical of the band. And more generally, it can be seen that melody has become increasingly important, an absolutely foreground component in the six songs of the album. The outcome is an hour of granitic monolithic doom, dotted with psych openings and ramblings, embellished with almost acoustic insertions and arrangements even more refined than in the past. Summa of all this, the final At Niceae (almost a mini-suite with its more than 15 minutes), in which they find space all the many facets and peculiarities of the band from Göteborg and its latest album. Emblem of contemporary doom, with all the roots well planted in what preceded it, and branches stretched towards new horizons (as it seems to suggest the acoustic closure, only guitar and voice).

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2017 – Day 1

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2017 – Day 1
Ufomammut + Doom + The Mild

Heavy psychedelic music, made in Italy. DOCG.

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2017 – Day 1
Ufomammut + Doom + The Mild
08.04.2017 - Giavera del Montello (TV)

I am a loyal customer. When I like a festival - both for the music and the atmosphere - it's always a pleasure to come back. One year after the whirlwind that forced Converge to play 2 sets in the same evening to guarantee all the participants to attend their concert (moved indoor after the collapse of several trees had destroyed the stage) here I am again, among the gorgeous Montello hills.

The first day starts from the small stage (and who remembers the emergency stage set up last year, forget about it: this year also this one is a proper stage!) and the music of The Mild. Every festival you respect must open with the bang. And the young Venetian band is the right bang. Their music is a evil sick sludge of Eyehategod school, alternating hardcore at full-speed and post-metal boulders, without disdaining feedbacks and dissonances. Great discovery! There could be no better start!

Vegan dinner and then again in front of the small stage for Doom. With its typically hardcore assaults, the historical name of the roughest and muddiest crust punk immediately triggers a violent mosh. If the first band was astonishing for the devastating youthful strength of its music, the British veterans sounds engulfed and suffocated instead. Despite the speed, everything sounds gunky and bogged. For those who (like me) come from the sharp and calibrated metal violence, it sounds weird to hear a drummer who, while going fast, does not destroy the drums at every turn - or a guitarist who does not have the attack that can break eardrums at every riff. Yet the charm of Doom lies in that horrible feeling of being drunk in the midst of a fight with the police, with retchings in the mouth. Thanks to the guttural voice, the nasty sounds and the d-beat rhythms that induce to push with the neighbor who quietly drinks a beer giving a fuck of the rest. Pure anarchy.

And after doom as a name, doom in fact. Ufomammut on the main stage. The audience, numerous and passionate,is the proof that the band from Tortona has finally gained in Italy the success reached abroad years ago. With sounds initially not perfectly calibrated, the cosmic doom of the trio takes a few minutes to reveal itself throughout its psychedelic power. But in the second part of the show we are abducted by their interstellar blows. And my astrophysical theory gets confirmed: when the "mammoth" component (riffs) is more prominent than the "ufo"  one (psychedelic visions), pleasure increases! At the top of the space trip, the spaceship collapses. The power goes out. It's like waking up with a start. Stunned we all wait for the rest of the show. Grand finale with rain of meteorites, cosmic lightnings and storms of distortions. Heavy psychedelic music, made in Italy. DOCG.

Ahab + The Foreshadowing – 25.11.2016 – Exenzia Der Club (Prato)

Ahab + The Foreshadowing – 25.11.2016 – Exenzia Der Club (Prato)

The Call of the Wretched Sea.

Ahab + The Foreshadowing – 11.25.2016 – Exenzia Der Club (Prato)

Tonight is dedicated to a "première" and a second time "for reconfirmation".There are also other bands playing this evening, but I managed to arrive only before the start of those pinned on my wishlist.

Roman The Foreshadowing literally won me over with their concert at Cycle, in Calenzano, in January 2014 (support tour to Danish Saturnus, along with Doomraiser and Shores of Null). Since then I looked forward to the chance to hear them again live and the release of the new Seven Heads Ten Horns has finally given me this opportunity. Considering the high expectations and the fact that - even though already out a few months ago - I had not heard the new album yet, the risk to remain not completely fulfilled was really high. Yet the Roman band left its mark once again and reconfirmed itself. Many songs from the new album and upon all the wonderful final suite Nimrod really stood out. Definitely good sounds, with the lines of all instruments (keyboards/synths included) well in evidence. The only one to remain slightly below his talent - do not know if for volume/setting of the microphone or sore throat/"bad night" - is Marco Benevento, whose cavernous voice gives chills and emotions, but it does not sound deep and dark as in the previous live and on recordings. Venial sin, for a band that put side by side to an undoubted technical ability songs that capture the listener for their emotional charge.

I lost Ahab gig at Desertfest Belgium to listen to them tonight (they played simultaneously with  Pentagram, and - knowing that luckily I would have recovered them a month and a half later in Italy - I had left them "on hold" pending for this date). The German quartet overwhelms me from their very first note with its deep, powerful and "oceanic" sound and I immediately feel stunned by the doomy slowness and heaviness of every single note. If Daniel Droste guitar puts one behind the other riffs and solos of crystalline and dark beauty, it is definitely  Cornelius Althammer drums what captures the audience more than anything else. Every single stroke of the drummer is really deadly and it is kind of a second engine of the band, able to add an unexpected - still monolithic - dynamism to each note as well as to each song in its entirety. Droste voice is hypnotic, almost a mantra of the deep, when it resonates in his full muddy growl. Surprising in clean parts, in which - perhaps not always perfect, but still effective - he reminds me of Aaron Stainthorpe for his theatrical and - at times - sorrowful gait. An incredible set, whose hour and a half ran away in a moment (and this may seem paradoxical, given the genre!), and whose closing is entrusted to an excerpt from the first, seminal, The Call of the Wretched Sea.

Deadsmoke - Deadsmoke

Deadsmoke - Deadsmoke
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2016)

Deadsmoke - Deadsmoke
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2016)

The cover itself of Deadsmoke selftitled album is reminiscent of a heavy (UFO)mammoth wandering at the foothills of a glacier. Heavy imposing riffs move with exhausting slowness, like a hairy pachyderm looking for food amongst morainic rocks and snow. Chill envelops both the gigantic mountains and the songs of the band - band formed exactly at the (South Tyrol) mountain slopes. We are at high altitude, in a January night. Maybe for the cold - which numbs and makes you lose sensitivity - or maybe for the hypnotizing starry sky, the fact is that the effect of this music is deafening, with clear references to the cosmic doom of Electric Wizard and Sleep school, as well as Ufomammut. Obtundation is also amplified by some space rock echoes that seem to resonate up in those mountains (also thanks to special guest Gabriele Fiori on synth - Black Rainbows and Heavy Psych Sounds Records, label of the band from Bolzano). And there is also some disastrous landslide of boulders in pure post metal style (Tornado), giving movement to an otherwise monolithic album. Deadsmoke mammoth is an extinct animal and does not add special news to the fauna of the present time: but it is so alive as to be extremely tasty for all the hunters of these sounds. And if you think that it is just a puppy (it is the trio's debut album indeed) you cannot wait to see what it will look like when "grown up" and detached from fathers footsteps.

Cough – Still They Pray

Cough – Still They Pray
(Relapse Records, 2016)

Cough. Tosse.

Cough – Still They Pray
(Relapse Records, 2016)

Cough. They could not find a more appropriate name to their music. The 67 minutes of cosmic doom of their third album owns the repellent stickiness of  mucus choking bronchial tubes. Long and muddy tracks slowly dragging themselves, finding  a ray of light with difficulty. Parker Chandler voice is certainly not the picture of health, and, at times, it reaches the most putrid side of sludge (Possession, Masters of Torture). Despite their monolithicity, the heavy obsessive riffs maintain a sinuous groove (as if we sway, completely drunk, on a seesaw ... close to vomit ...). Their music is not particularly original (the influence of Electric Wizard is evident and not only because the album is produced by Jus Oborn), but songs are compelling, both when dilate themselves in dirty blues solos full of psychedelic echoes (Shadow of the Torturer), and when venturing along melodic roads (Let It Bleed). Becoming Windhand bassist, Parker Chandler brought Garrett Morris (Windhand guitar player and producer) to the court of his Cough, to help Oborn in the processing steps in the recording studio. Differently from Windhand, here there is no shade of light, because we are surrounded by the gloomy and slimy atmosphere of an old splatter film. Although the result is not so different from the classic albums of the genre, it is always nice to experience the feeling of Regan MacNeil, possessed by the devil, vomiting in the face of Father Karras.

Spider Kitten - Ark of Octofelis

Spider Kitten - Ark of Octofelis
(Undergroove, 2016)

Spider Kitten - Ark of Octofelis
(Undergroove, 2016)

Welsh Spider Kitten new album lives in a sort of alpha-omega - that is at once circle and spiral - in the space-time between Underestimating The Consequences Of Effective Propaganda (Part I) and Underestimating The Consequences...(Part II). In a retro-futuristic scenario, suspended in a non-time and in a non-place par excellence - the desert -, the space psychedelic part of the combo captained by Chi Lameo takes over everything and dilates sounds, rhythms and melodies. Therefore Ark of Octofelis becomes some kind of surprise for all those who consider Spider Kitten as a "Welsh doom band". Indeed only in a couple of songs - in particular One From The Heart - guitars and distortions become heavier, fitting in the canons of the genre. Apart from this, everything is focused on the concept of this album (the - power?! - machinations of a psychedelic band around a cult/non-cult revolving around music in a "sidereal" artificial space-time), starting from the almost hypnotic, hyper-dilated Feline Will mantra, then showing all its many sides in the multifaceted side two. Vocals are certainly Chi Lameo & co. strength and added value: doubled, hallucinated, with crooked and at the same time extremely catchy (à la Alice In Chains) melodies, with really always perfect harmonizations (maintaining intact their charm and beauty also in live shows). Ark of Octofelis is a great psychedelic trip, and as such it requires the right aptitude and the right time. Take all the time you need, get into the loop of this 46-minutes-long suite and get stucked inside it: so you will taste the beauty of the planet Octofelis and the cult of The Spider Kitten.
