Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats – Wasteland

Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats – Wasteland
(Rise Above Records, 2018)

Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats – Wasteland
(Rise Above Records, 2018)

A post apocalyptic bulletin in pure John Carpenter style introduces us into the dystopian world imagined by Kevin Starrs. A population under continuous surveillance, with its mind emptied by hypnotic messages transmitted by a technology at the service of power. To tell the "bad trip" of some dissidents who succeeded in reprogramming their mind and escaping from the city, but then found themselves in a wild land ruled by unprecedented violence, Starrs colours his music in a blood-red so much brilliant to be dazzling. Escape from New York and Mad Max take on the surreal contours of a Rob Zombie's remake, while maintaining the dusty coat of the old 50s sci-fi movies. With their fifth album and a consolidated recognition, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats continue to sound dirty like an old B movie, even in their most colourful release. Their attack against technology still has the sound of a band rehearsing in a damp basement, even now that the sinister proto doom atmospheres are ever closer to a hallucinated psychedelia that seems to come from the Mansion Family (or the Black Angels who "got high" with an old horror). The dark and lopsided riffs have got a less disruptive impact than in the past, because now the absolute protagonist is melody, following unusual directions thanks to beautiful vocal harmonisations. Rhythm and tension increase with the passing of songs, proving how much Starrs' narrative capacity has matured since the times of Vol. 1, to which, however, this Wasteland seems to be near once again, from a strictly musical point of view.

Messa - Feast for Water

Messa - Feast for Water
(Aural Music, 2018)

Immersione profonda.

Messa - Feast for Water
(Aural Music, 2018)

Deep immersion. In the ocean of this Earth. In the swamp of this Humanity. At the pure sources of the ego. Along the rivers of being. In the lakes of the here and now. The expressive urgency of an immanent and inescapable imminent. Messa second album marks an enormous growth compared to the already wonderful Belfry (2016). Growth both from a musical point of view and from a communicative and emotional one. Sometimes almost on tiptoe, like sleepwalkers suspended in midair, we go through oneiric landscapes, skillfully sketched by a few indispensable keyboard notes supported by minimalist drums (as in Leah). Sometimes instead we are dragged in a whirlwind of emotions, as in a race through a forest of fears, with a guitar that commands us like the flute of the Pied Piper (for example in The Seer and She knows). The most diverse seeds bloom in the music of the quartet from Cittadella. From the wide open spaces of dark ambient to the deep caves of doom. From the refined occult rock atmospheres to almost jazz passages, opening scenarios which are reminiscent of Lynch soundtracks (She knows). And often these multiple souls coexist and manifest themselves even within the same song, since there is an almost progressive rock structure at the base of their composition. In all this, on all this, a voice of beauty, power and capacity as few. A sort of feminine Orpheus that enchants the listener, taking him where she wants, showing him what she wants. At times as moving as Anneke Van Giersbergen, other times with the evocative power of Lisa Gerrard. But basically Sara's voice is so expressive and fascinating precisely because, extremely personal, it escapes labels and the game of similarities. Feast for Water is an album with an almost shamanic force, which feeds on ancestral images and feelings, capable of touching (and making resonate) the deepest and most intimate strings. Dare to immerse yourself in its waters, let your ear listen to the song of the Sirens.

Ruby The Hatchet - Valley of the Snake

Ruby The Hatchet - Valley of the Snake
(Tee Pee Records, 2015)

Ruby The Hatchet - Valley of the Snake
(Tee Pee Records, 2015)

A wrecked jeep, a bunch of ultra-doped friends, rock 'n' roll, plenty of beer and weed, and a cottage hidden in the woods to spend the weekend in, unaware of the Evil who nests there. Ruby The Hatchet hilarious tribute to Sam Raimi's Evil Dead, the videoclip of Vast Acid is the perfect representation of their own personal view of that "female" occult rock so cool for many heavy psych fans in these last years. The American band approaches the dark atmospheres of the past with the sensitivity of a vinyls-and-b-movies-devourer nerd, more careful not to die out his joint in front of his favorite horror, rather than to impersonate the role of the magician in touch with the kingdom of the dead. Their Valley of the Snake is an album that enters the underground basements dear to the early Black Sabbath and their disciples. But going down the stairs towards the darkness it shows a groove that touches the energy of that doom close to stoner. Guitar riffs and phrasings have that hallucinogenic aftertaste so dear to Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, and they create the mysterious and vaguely disturbing atmosphere typical of the genre. Easy-listening, melodically engaging (excellent Jillian Taylor on the microphone), and with a great groove. In short, how to watch a beautiful horror movie, doped, together with friends. Beware of the game we play, anyway: we could unexpectedly release the forces of Evil and get crushed by them!

Blood Ceremony + Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell + Ancient Cult - 10.06.2017 - Freakout Club (Bologna)

Blood Ceremony + Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell + Ancient Cult - 10.06.2017 - Freakout Club (Bologna)

Niente pedaliere grandi come astronavi!

New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Blood Ceremony + Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell + Ancient Cult - 06.10.2017 - Freakout Club (Bologna)

Highway trips in the direction of the umpteenth concert are one of those exciting moments in which we lose ourselves in kilometric lucubrations on the "essence" of music. Today we focus on the beauty of direct, immediate, super-groovy hard rock (preferably played by a power trio), based exclusively on a (one and only!) distortion sound. No pedalboards huge like spaceships! Our wishes will be fulfilled by Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, playing an unexpectedly memorable concert, considering that we were at Freakout primarily for Blood Ceremony (which we wanted to see live after their concert in 2009, as support band for Electric Wizard!). But first things first.

While 20 minutes from Bologna, at Imola Autodrome, an immense crowd is gathering for Guns n' Roses reunion, we find ourselves under a flyover in the city center, in the tiny venue of the Freakout, along with a restricted circle fanatics of occult sounds. In its own way this "out of the world" gathering makes the evening even more like a secret rite.

Ancient Cult (from Bologna) to start the black mass are. Their esoteric hard rock is son of the 70s, midway between Black Sabbath sulfuric exhalations, Blue Öyster Cult space trips and the galloping style of the first New Wave of British Heavy Metal. A bit stiff in the first part (also because it is the first concert with the new drummer) with the passing of minutes they acquire warmth and security proving to be a very interesting combo, technically skillful and melodically never trivial (really some beautiful guitar phrasings). With his clean sharp voice, the singer is in my opinion the weak element of the band, but overall the outcome is really worthwhile.

As soon as the Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell bang the first riff in our face, we find ourselves in Easy Rider riding a motorcycle at full speed. Badass dirty hard rock that smells of gasoline and beer, gruff like Motorhead, elastic like Led Zeppelin, punk ante litteram like The Who. Bell-bottoms, gigantic boots, rocker look from another era, and a teenage on the drums that looks like a possessed octopus. I am really amazed by their incredible groove. Every riff is so classic that it seems you know their songs from ages, yet it exalts me as if it was the first time I hear a live concert. In the end I am soaking sweaty and exalted as a 16-year-old Guns n 'Roses fan in front of his idols (at a 90s concert). Magnificent!

After breathing directly from the exhaust pipe of a Harley, and still full with adrenaline, it is not easy to fall into the mysterious and vaguely esoteric atmospheres of Blood Ceremony. Yet the Canadian band shows that it has grown so much in recent years, that it is not crushed by the energy of the previous band (which, I repeat, was really incredible!). After Easy Rider is the turn of All the Colors of the Dark. Alia O'Brien plays the role of a priestess, and with a loud and sure voice (alternating with keyboards and flute) invites us into that dusty, somewhat psychedelic, and a bit kitsch, sabbath so dear to the horror imaginary of the past. The band plays really well, much more cohesive and confident than in 2009, and although it has lost some of its b-movie charm, it shows a melodic maturity that elevates it among the most interesting names of a genre very much in vogue lately and that they themselves were among the first to revive.

Beastmaker - Lusus Naturae

Beastmaker – Lusus Naturae
(Rise Above Records, 2016)

Beastmaker – Lusus Naturae
(Rise Above Records, 2016)

Did we really need another band reminiscent of the early Black Sabbath? the answer is "yes" if this band sounds like Beastmaker. Evoking the imagery, sounds and atmospheres of the doom of the band from Birmingham (and of its more direct descendants such as Saint Vitus), this Californian band releases a great album of dusty heavy metal. It is up to the listener to decide whether this "dust" is synonymous of old and musty (like a 50 years old horror movie, watched too many times and too slow to be appreciated in these days) or it is instead synonymous of misterious and fascinating (like a 50 years old horror movie which does not get older with viewings and that on the contrary grows in arcane charm exactly because it is more and more distant from everyday reality). Lusus Naturae is an album built on enthralling groovy riffs (in spite of their heavy slowed down gait) - which never sound obvious or boring even though clearly part of their inspirational genre - alternating with gloomy arpeggios and acid vocal lines (halfway between the early Ozzy, Alice In Chains and Goatsnake). An album explicitly inspired by the occult horror images of Mario Bava movies. For all "dust" lovers.

With the Dead - With the Dead

With the Dead - With the Dead
(Rise Above, 2015)

With the Dead - With the Dead
(Rise Above, 2015)

For those who are still attached to the image of zombies as sticky and stupid beings characterized by an exhausting slowness, the first homonymous With the Dead album is for sure a great and welcome surprise! No athletic movement, no sudden assault, neither superhuman strength as in modern remakes: this album could be an homage to the first Romero movies, when zombies were unrestrainable because they were insensitive to every sort of mutilation and - above all - they were as much numerous as an army of disgusting insects. Buried his Cathedral, Lee Dorrian comes back together with two excellent names of modern doom metal scene: Tim Bagshaw and Mark Greening (protagonists - with Electric Wizard - of masterpieces as Come my Fanatics… and Dopethrone). In a little bit more than forty minutes, the three musicians paint a putrefying landscape, where oozy riffs stick to your skin as the stink of dead flesh. There is the impenetrable fog of the crypts in the hyper-fuzzed distortions by Bagshaw, the chimes of an old bell tower in the heavy and slowed down rhythmic by Greening, deep distress in the diabolical invocations by Dorrian. The three undead generate a suffocating and hallucinogenic atmosphere, halfway between the catacomb doom and the most visionary heavy psychedelia. An old, absurd and revolting splatter movie that does not depart from the genre and does not suggest new paths, yet certainly it will entertain those who - with popcorn in one hand and beer in the other - will be brave enough to cross the gates of this cemetery.
