The Jesus Lizard - Goat

The Jesus Lizard - Goat
(Touch And Go, 1991)

The Jesus Lizard - Goat
(Touch And Go, 1991)

It's the first The Jesus Lizard album I listened to. A friend of mine gave it to me during my first year at university. And it was absolutely astonishing. David Yow hallucinated voice and his delirious lyrics. Denison crooked guitar and Sims-McNeilly jagged hooking rhythms. That perfect mix of post-hardcore and noise that catches your brain and enraptures you and leads you into a distant world, detached from all that "perfect", boxed up and tuned reality in which you constantly move your steps. Thirty minutes of sounds and words that were a revolution in 1991 and that have not lost even today their destabilizing power, because even today they have all their sense and place of election in that underground from which they emerged, made of a label like Touch And Go, a producer like Steve Albini and a scene of musicians intolerant of expressive restrictions and restrictions of any other kind. And when for the umpteenth time you are listening to South Mouth and here it is that suspended, distorted and dissonant pause, broken by that off-key, reverberated and shuffled "Hey sometimes ...", you realize that Goat is and will always be a milestone of the early 90s and a constant reference point for lots of music in the years to follow.

1990. A Selection of 20 Albums.

1990. The year Sonic Youth open up a crack. Through that crack independent music ventures into a universe unknown until then. 1990 is there, right before this wound leads to the collapse of the separation wall between the two worlds. A symbolic year. Break between two decades as much important as much different. Also musically. In the year that acts as a watershed with its beautiful round figure, the boundary between the various genres is really evanescent. These are just twenty of the many significant albums released in this year. As always, they were chosen from those we own and that we have listened to up to the point of wearing them out. And as series are usually closed by their authors, this is also open to the classic close: "to be continued..."

The Jesus Lizard - Head

The Jesus Lizard - Head
(Touch And Go, 1990)

The Jesus Lizard - Head
(Touch And Go, 1990)

Left behind the blues influence of the noisy and deviated band called Scratch Acid, singer David Yow and bass guitar player David Sims meet the producer Steve Albini and the guitarist Duane Denison, landing to a dissonant and perverted noise rock.  With a real drummer (McNeilly)  and no drum machine (used in EP Pure, 1989) The Jesus Lizard compose an abrasive album, exciting for its rhythmic dynamism and disturbing for its melodic deconstruction. Head can expand itself dramatically with its 2-3 minutes songs, because of alienating Denison arpeggios and riffs, perfectly fitted in a rhythmic structure in constant motion, but deeply hallucinated as a disarticulated Joy Division skeleton. Yow vomits a desperate nihilism that doesn’t expect to be understand, in a album that will be the father of 90’s discomfort.
