Lucifer – Lucifer II

Lucifer – Lucifer II
(Century Media, 2018)

Lucifer – Lucifer II
(Century Media, 2018)

Lucifer comes from a long distance relationship. But it needs concrete collaboration to develop. Faded that between Gaz Jennings guitar and Johanna Sadonis voice, it is thanks to the concrete union between the singer and her partner Nicke Andersson (Entombed, The Hellacopters) that is recreated the alchemy necessary to the second chapter of the saga to come to light. This new union can only determine a result which is extremely different from the previous one. Almost its antithesis. The fascination for the mysteries and obscurities of ancient Egypt (which in the first album took life through a dark-coloured doom metal) is blinded this time by the dazzling light of a ray of the Sun that seems Californian more than North African. There is air of freedom, more than that of a catacomb. Behind an enigmatic and obscure veil, Blue Öyster Cult hid a robust rock n 'roll soul. And that is what inspired the new Lucifer that, while maintaining an ambiguous sulphurous component (especially in Phoenix and Faux Pharaoh), colour it with rainbows of melody and soft round riffs. A blues rock that seems to rise directly from the early 70s, with still some influence of the summer of love. A confident, romantic and radiant attitude that no one would ever associate with the fallen angel, but exactly for this reason it surprises (or disconcerts, according to taste) proving how much he is able to change skin moving away from genre clichés.

Tribulation - Down Below

Tribulation - Down Below
(Century Media, 2018)

Tribulation - Down Below
(Century Media, 2018)

In recent years there have not been many vampires in metal undergrowth. Fauna inhabiting the black forests today is characterized by bearded dwarfs, rough, dirty and frightened by the idea of taking themselves too seriously. Or from old mummies far too serious - last, shrivelled, sacred monsters of this genre. When bands capable of mellow fascinating music like Tribulation arise from the coffin, it is impossible not to be hypnotized by the call of darkness. The music of these children of the night possesses all the spectral beauty and energy of eternal (if nourished with an adequate quantity of blood) youth and, at the same time, the sophisticated maturity of those who have lived an infinite number of nights. With their fourth album, the Swedes paint a marvelous and enthralling ghoulish dance of gothic metal with horror and cinematographic shades, manipulating the black colour with melodies at the same time bewitching, unusual and engaging, able to creep into the head like lugubrious obsessions. If Johannes Andersson voice is the most easily referable to the darkness of the northern European metal forests (calling to mind Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquility), it is with the lopsided melodies of Jonathan Hultén and Adam Zaars guitars that it is possible to perceive the depth lying within the dead body. In these last years only Pallbearer, Ahab and a few others had managed to combine foggy atmospheres and romantic melancholy with a thread of seemingly fragile, yet so important, dissonance. Fortunately now we have new emaciated vampires to accompany our nightmares.

Radio Moscow – New Beginnings

Radio Moscow – New Beginnings
(Century Media, 2017)

Radio Moscow – New Beginnings
(Century Media, 2017)

Collecting the electric shock generated fifty years ago by a black guitarist born in Seattle without being electrocuted, is not an easy task. Yet Radio Moscow prove that they know how to ride the lightning bolt naturally and they know how to drive it with personality. The trio climbs aboard an American sports car of the late 60s, breaks the brakes and launches itself at breakneck speed, turning up the volume to the max. Parker Griggs guitar is behind the wheel, while his hot voice is on the seat next to him, and he crosses stone hard rock territories with a soft intense touch of blues school, until it ends up in psychedelia. With a convulsive drumming, Paul Marrone goes in pursuit, along the tracks designed by Anthony Meier bass. Burning the road, however, it is the uncontrollable frenzy of Griggs guitar, who - on his fifth album - pushes even more on the accelerator. Crossed over half a century by hundreds of rockers in search of freedom, this road is being fired for the umpteenth time by a trio armed only with guitar, bass and drums. A story that repeats itself, it's true. But, if interpreted with character as in New Beginnings, it succeeds in exciting the listener as well as we get excited every time we watch Easy Rider, with a poster of Cream and a lava lamp next to us.

Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black

Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black
(Century Media, 1999)

All play dead.

Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black
(Century Media, 1999)

All play dead. A suicide opens wide the doors of desperation and the tragedy destroys every dream about the future and every certainty with whom the past had been built. Impotence facing our frailty. And rage becomes the only, useless, deliverance. Recurring obsessive nightmares amongst delicate moments of solitude with our own ghosts. Dreaming Neon Black is a concept album about self-destruction magnetism after the death of every God. Deliberately theatrical in his interpretation, Warrel Dane is inspired by a story that involved him. And his passionate impetus we can breathe in every song. Gothic atmospheres, acid melodies and grinding dissonances are protagonists as much as furious intricate riffs or liquid arpeggios making this album a unique jewel in heavy metal history.

Paradise Lost – The Plague Within

Paradise Lost – The Plague Within
(Century Media, 2015)

Mai, però, i Paradise Lost avevano suonato così diretti e impetuosi.

ParadiseLost – The Plague Within
(Century Media, 2015)

The fountain of eternal youth. Paradise Lost drunk its water, recovering their lost paradise. Gradually back to the path of their death/doom beginnings, gothic metal fathers suddenly come back to their adolescence with unmanageable strength thanks to a massive muscular album like The Plague Within. But it is undeniable that the many experiences collected in more than a quarter of a century of career are certainly not lost. Sensitivity for romantic melodies does not fade behind mastodontic riffs, just as Nick Holmes clean voice is not overwhelmed by his angry growl - which here comes back protagonist as it has not been for years. Though Paradise Lost had never been so direct and impetuous. In a young and strong body, the mature mind creates an album which looks forward and is never nostalgically anchored to the past. From the first (exciting!) riff of No Hope In Sight to the epic and tragic crescendo of Return to the Sun, through the oppressive and funereal pace of Beneath Broken Earth or the devastating one of Flesh from Bones, each song runs like an overflowing - emotional - river, swamping everything it finds along its path. Moments of reflection nest in the romantic interweavings drawn by the phrasings of the two guitars, but even the most meditative moments have got a strength and determination that would never be expected by musicians for so many years on the scene. A rebirth, under a dress that is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating ever worn by the band.

Hexvessel - When We Are Death

Hexvessel - When We Are Death
(Century Media, 2016)

Hexvessel - When We Are Death
(Century Media, 2016)

Hexvessel are dead. Yet their passing is a regeneration and its name is When We Are Death. Reached the third full lenght, the new incarnation of the Finnish band is rooted in the humus of night folk of the past, yet it projects its own leaves towards different directions, in search of a spiritual light recalling the late 60s American psychedelia, with some hints of current romantic Anathema. After all, Mat Mc Nerney's artistic life is a continuous regeneration (just think about the many transformations during his career, from Dødheimsgard avantgarde black metal to Beastmilk/Grave Pleasures post punk). Landed some years ago into the Finnish forests to create Hexvessel, this time the English musician makes explicit his own philosophy of death and rebirth, placed in a natural cycle which connects and interrelates everything. When We Are Death is delicate, melancholic psychedelic rock. Listening to this album you breath the mystery and wonder of those who face the unexpected, yet unavoidable, change. For all those who think that radical changes are lifeblood.
