Waste of Space Orchestra – Syntheosis

Waste of Space Orchestra – Syntheosis
(Svart Records, 2019)

Waste of Space Orchestra – Syntheosis
(Svart Records, 2019)

Roadburn is a religion, 013 is its church. In this temple of black psychedelia, on April 19, 2018 ten Finnish musicians were the ministers of a liturgy. Like all the others present, I too was unaware of what would have resulted from the collaboration between Oranssi Pazuzu and Dark Buddha Rising, specifically designed for this festival. I sat down in religious silence, I opened my mind and I made sure that the cosmic music of the ten entered inside it, to manipulate it to its liking. The experience I was part of cannot be reproduced simply listening to that music on record. But Syntheosis could not help but see the light. Even though, like an image reflected in a corridor of mirrors, the energy released by the ten was multiplied by the community present that evening in that music hall, the solitary listening is a theotic process to which anyone who is not afraid of his own transformation should submit. The metamorphosis induced by the sound vortex is tangible. Swaying melodies beyond the boundaries of dissonance, as well as cosmic storms alternating with moments of atmospheric calm, open the doors of perception and make the boundaries between ego and non-ego increasingly blurred. At the end of the ceremony nothing will be the same.

Roadburn 2018 - Day 4

Roadburn 2018 - Day 4
[Joy feat. Dr. Space + Big Brave + Spotlights + Vánagandr: Sól án varma + Wrekmeister Harmonies]

Ultimo giorno.

“See You next year, spaceheads!”

Roadburn 2018 - Day 4
[Joy feat. Dr. Space + Big Brave + Spotlights + Vánagandr: Sól án varma + Wrekmeister Harmonies]

Last day. The one you already start thinking about "lights on, no more music, everyone at home". You have been spending four days immersed in an incredible atmosphere, listening to often unrepeatable concerts and you still have a whole day of music ahead of you, but you know that the magic is about to end. To push back this thought, let's enter one of the venues and find out what awaits us today.

Let's start from the Het Patronaat with Wrekmeister Harmonies. Two masters of occult ceremony, plus a drummer on loan (sometimes looking for a compass to orientate himself). Desolate and desolating sound landscapes. Pearls of distilled melodies and lacerations of noise. A strange mixture of ethereal and carnal, whose suggestions are amplified by videoprojections - initially hallucinatory and then disturbing (between anatomopathology and taxidermy without any censorship). A deep voice that digs a tunnel into an ocean of noise, with some notes of violin and keyboard to provide glimmers of light. As if Swans contemplated the bodies they had dismembered, able to be moved by that sight. A truly intense non-ordinary experience.

It is then time for another special event, specifically created for this Roadburn 2018. The gotha of Icelandic black metal - Misþyrming, Naðra, Svartidauði, Wormlust - gathered under the moniker Vánagandr for an unreleased musical work entitled Sól án Varma (literally "sun without radiance"). Whether it's the long night of winter in the land of ice and fire, or an apocalyptic and dystopian vision, or  atavistic and still current cultural heritage, it is certain that the "made in Iceland" project has got an undoubted expressive strenght and it manages to merge its black metal foundations into something else, endowed with a visionary nature that transcends the boundaries of the starting genre to wander in sometimes cosmic territories. For those who remember the first editions of the festival - based on stoner, doom and heavy psych - it will certainly sound absurd to face a concert with so compressed and futuristic sounds, with a solar storm of tremolo picking at full speed alternating with spatial dilations and reverberating ultra-distorted voices, yet it is precisely in this continuous search for heavy music going beyond known territories that Roadburn maintains its identity and uniqueness. As for Waste of Space Orchestra, we long for the recordings of this first work.

Left the vast desert spaces of the remote North, and ignored the inviting calls coming from the skate park adjacent to the Hall of Fame (there are rumors of some San Diego bands performing surprise shows) it's time to get into the heart of a metropolis teeming with New Yorkers Spotlights. For those like us who grew up with flannel shirts and Doc Martens, it's like coming home. Powerful and groovy riffs smell like King Buzzo, and dreamy melancholic openings are memories of old shoegaze dreams, as if they were rearranged by Aaron Turner. Noisy and heavy, but at the same time melodic and ethereal, they are a really interesting discovery, whose only flaw is that of not having a real keyboard on stage for those beautiful passages imprisoned in samples.

From the top of the Green Room balcony we move to another raised floor, that of the Het Patronaat. Here we win a seat (impelling necessity after four days of uninterrupted concerts) to listen to Big Brave. The wall of sound generated by the trio has got a physical and palpable consistency, and it seems to see it rise more and more, brick by brick, riff after riff, feedback after feedback, drone after drone, to fill up the whole space of the former church. A band of contrasts, in which a fragile hallucinated female voice climbs on a wall of distortion, producing a sound stream that stuns so much with its dilations as with its attacks. We observe the trio through a network of cables descending from the ceiling, a perfect point of view for this claustrophobic music.

In a day full of dark crooked atmospheres, the time has finally come to fly far away with bright psychedelic sounds. We return to the tiny Cul de Sac, to close this Roadburn with the radiant atmosphere of San Diego. The psychedelic blues of Joy implemented by the space sounds of Dr. Space: a Merlin Wizard in Honolulu that fills you with happiness at first sight. An hour of incredible improvisations which dilate the narrow space in which we sweat huddled on each other and transport us to another dimension, made of other vibrations and perceptions. A Hawaiian beach burning with volcanic explosions! The most beautiful end that this day and this Roadburn 2018 could have! "See You next year, spaceheads!"

[Appendix]: since this is the review of the last day, it is time to "make an analysis" of the Festival even beyond the musical aspect (which has amply satisfied us!).

Thumb up for the new premises. Both the Koepelhal and the Hall of Fame proved to be two well-chosen locations, and they also allowed to overcome the problems of queues and soldouts that had occurred in the last years (as far as we know, this year it only happened with the two Bell Witch shows). Thumb up also for the new merchandise area, much more spacious and "complete", as well as for the area dedicated to the display of posters and screen prints. Furthermore, it is a good idea to use a skate park to recreate the atmosphere of San Diego (especially if you think that many musicians of that scene are professional skaters).

Constructive observations. The new merch area, although functional, would need some additional staff, dedicated to smaller sectors, so as to speed up operations (we all earn from this: both those who buy, and those who sell). Excellent the opportunity to leave our purchases in custody at negligible costs, but it is worthwhile to prolong the opening of the merch deposit until at least half an hour after the end of the last concert. Taking a cue from other festivals, finally, why not go to the rigid plastic glasses (those to bring back to the counter for the return) so as to avoid reducing the 013 and the other venues to expanses of plastic sticky with alcohol? Or why not organize a room cleaning service between one concert and another?

Roadburn is an incredible festival in continuous growth and evolution. We are sure that also next year it will surprise us once again!

Roadburn 2018 - Day 3

Roadburn 2018 - Day 3

[Earthless & Kikagaku Moyo + Godspeed You! Black Emperor + Boris with Stephen O'Malley + Damo Suzuki & Minami Deutsch + Hugsjá + Bell Witch]

Roadburn 2018 - Day 3

[Earthless & Kikagaku Moyo + Godspeed You! Black Emperor + Boris with Stephen O'Malley + Damo Suzuki & Minami Deutsch + Hugsjá + Bell Witch]

Even today it is abnormal warm for the season. But at 2:00 pm of this sunny day there are those who are able to throw you suddenly into the darkest gloomy autumn. Bell Witch at the Koepelhal, for the performance of the whole Mirror Reaper. An hour and a half of apocalyptic and very slow funeral doom that annihilates the numerous audience (and at the end of the concert we also discover that many did not manage to attend their show ... sold out at the opening!). The American duo stuns us with his almost static, yet evocative, phrasings of bass and drums. A breath of "lightness" is brought thanks to the appearance of Erik Moggridge (Aerial Ruin) and his fragile and melancholic voice. Atmospheres that recall large desolate and solitary spaces, in which it is wonderful to get lost and feel tiny. A theater hall concert, to be enjoyed sitting on comfortable armchairs, that - instead - we attend standing, exhausted by the heat and the heaviness of this obnubilating music.

A little bit of sunlight and air, to regain contact with life and move to 013 where Hugsjá are performing their whole work. It is like being transported by a Viking ship in a distant place and time, far from the present in which we move. Ivar Bjørnson (Enslaved) and Einar Selvik (Wardruna) work is the result of a research on Norway, its history and culture, and it is the first time that it has been proposed outside the borders of their mother country. Through the use of ancient musical instruments and through the deepening of traditions that can be described as ancestral, Hugsjá is an acoustic work that is striking for its power and its evocative narrative capacity. Often choral, voices immerse the listener in something ancient that still speaks to those who stretch their ears towards them.

In the Green Room, then, a spaceship headed by a Japanese crew awaits us. Transporting us to another dimension are Minami Deutsch, exceptionally led by Damo Suzuki, for a continuous flowing liquid jam. The veteran guru of krautrock is a true force of nature and - despite his age and long artistic career - he still has got a freshness and a youth beyond compare. Whether he launches himself into vocal experiments, or he follows more traditional paths, his voice creates images that are perfectly grafted to on the sound tracks created by the talented Minami Deutsch, worthy Japanese heirs of Can and Neu! A truly unmissable experience that exalts so much in the softer and more enveloping passages, as well as in the most obsessive and labyrinthine ones.

It is really a short step from the Green Room to the Main Stage. What awaits us is another collaboration of the highest level and that manages to exceed our high expectations. Boris, with Stephen O'Malley, for the performance of the whole Absolutego. The wall of amplifiers on stage is really impressive, and half of it is O'Malley prerogative. We expect to be overwhelmed by impenetrable stunning deafening drones. Actually what awaits us is a cosmic journey. Live, Tokyo trio's debut album acquires a very intense psychedelic atmosphere, turning into a sort of Zeit (Tangerine Dream) with guitars instead of synthesizers. Not only saturation of sounds and stratification of distortions, but also dissonant waves and rarefied harmonies emerging powerful from the sound magma bewilder the audience. When Atsuo makes the mammoth sound flux disappear within two cymbals in collision, it is as if a galaxy imploded before our eyes and inside our ears. Pure ecstasy. By far Boris best concert among the three we attended in the last year and a half.

The charm of the analog and the evocative power of soundtrack are what distinguishes Godspeed You! Black Emperor and their long set. The Canadian band is a real ensemble, standing on stage like an orchestra. Sounds are calibrated and harmonized to perfection. Each song is a suite of music and emotions. To accentuate and increase these feelings, videoprojections are all analog and hand-assembled with great skill and taste (sometimes the film is placed near to a glowing light bulb to be deformed). Almost like watching a silent film whose sound commentary is performed live by a small orchestra, but with reversed roles. A really suggestive concert in which the Canadian band provides its own personal interpretation of 70s German cosmic music, read as a soundtrack to an imaginary film that, in the final climax, makes us leave the cinema with tears in our eyes.

A special meeting between East and West concludes this day marked by a high level of cosmic psychedelia. The last collaboration of the day is a super jam by Earthless and Kikagaku Moyo. Basically two mega improvisations of half an hour each, in which the members of the respective bands overlap each other almost as in a canon, triggering a dialogue with many voices, which follows twisted dreamlike paths and then converges in a sonic shock wave of incredible impact. Beautifully harmonious and evocative is the intertwining of oriental meditation (soft, fluid and guided by the sitar) and the expansion of western consciousness (electric, visceral and explosive). The musical flow created by the eight musicians seems to live on its own life and it seems unstoppable. But just as suddenly it appeared, just as suddenly it comes to its end and leaves us as suspended and eager to undertake a new journey.

Roadburn 2018 - Day 2

Roadburn 2018 - Day 2
[Grave Pleasures + Godflesh + Converge + Sacri Monti + Comet Control + Motorpsycho + Mutoid Man]

Qui i Mutoid Man infuocano letteralmente il palco.

I Sacri Monti ci aspettano.

Oggi tutto You Fail Me. Rosso sangue ovunque.

Roadburn 2018 - Day 2
[Grave Pleasures + Godflesh + Converge + Sacri Monti + Comet Control + Motorpsycho + Mutoid Man]

We are still in this strange anticipation of summer and we start our second day of festival in the new area of this Roadburn 2018. The Koepelhal complex (former railway industry) hosts the second stage of the festival for capacity, in addition to the area dedicated to merchandise and art exhibitions: a novelty designed specifically to avoid sold out and endless queues of the past. Impressive structure with a post-industrial flavour that perfectly fits into the atmosphere of the festival, and it is only a few meters from its historic heart.

Here Mutoid Man literally fire up the stage. Third time we see them live in just over 2 years and by far the best. Certainly thanks to the beautiful stage, the excellent sounds and the exciting atmosphere of Roadburn, but above all thanks to the undeniable progress of this trio that, after cleaning up its riffs from the overabundance of effects (mainly wah wah), sounds much more compact and precise, without having lost in frenzy and irony, indispensable parts of their style and concerts (funny crazy gags are still there, don't worry!). A show able to amuse and exalt even the most depressed doomsters and the most misanthropic blacksters. Hints to classics of the past such as 21st Century Schizoid Man or Communication Breakdown, nestled in the band's incandescent rides, in addition to what is now "their" battle horse in all respects (Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood), enrich a setlist to say the least extraordinary. What an incredible start of the day!

In a flash to 013 to listen at least to an hour of the long set of Motorpsycho. We arrive that the band is focused on the songs of their latest The Tower. The atmosphere is loaded with psychedelia and positive rock vibrations. Although arriving with game started we can immediately get into their magical atmosphere and their incredible succession of riffs and phrasings, in which it is easy to get lost and then always find ourselves at the center of the White Rabbit's lair.

We abandon the vastness of 013 to slip into the tiny Cul de Sac. We eat the side of the mushroom that makes us small and we cut out our corner in this extremely sweaty and full packed venue. Canadians Comet Control take us by the hand and lead us on a journey to the center of (their) maze. They are involving and psychedelic. With a powerful drummer who, although not always that precise, has got his point in the ability to press and drag the listener. The band's estranging power makes us survive the suffocating heat.

We move into the new area of the festival, this time to the Hall of Fame, having also time to fiddle around its "relaxation area". We don't want to abandon psychedelia and we want to go back to San Diego. Sacri Monti are waiting for us. But before the start of their concert we stop to observe Figueroa (Harsh Toke guitarist) evolutions with the skate, in the skate park adjacent to Hall of Fame contributing to recreate the atmosphere of San Diego on European soil. Then we enter the concert venue and we are overwhelmed by a load of heavy psych and saturations at various levels of the Sacri Monti super-noisy jam. Their psychedelia is not soft and dreamy, yet rather obscure and stunning. Keyboard creates a wall of sound in continuous climax on which guitars solos are inserted. The gait is compact and massive, and it overwhelms the listener like a sandstorm.

It's time to change everything. It's time to get back to the Main Stage, bumping into Converge. Today the whole You Fail Me. Blood red everywhere. It seems impossible, but today the band from Boston exceeds yesterday itself. Their attacks are even more devastating. Sounds even more mammoth. Bannon voice even more sharp and penetrating. Not a key out of place, not the slightest space to move back. It is an explosion of cathartic fury. Eagles Become Vultures proves to be one of the most exciting moments of the entire festival, as well as the amazing In Her Shadow dedicated to Caleb Scofield (Cave In bass player, died a few weeks earlier). To put the icing on the cake surprise special guests Thomas Lindberg (At the Gates) and Kevin Baker (All Pigs must die) for Wolverine Blues. What a great enchore and what a final for one of the best gigs of this Roadburn 2018!

Let's take a little breath and wander around the Weirdo Canyon, headquarters of the festival. But it is soon time to return to 013: Godflesh and the whole Selfless are waiting for us (first time for its complete execution). The humanity of the musicians is hidden in a cloud full of distortions and industrial bases, and it appears only through Justin Broadrick dreamlike voice. Mastodontic and pachydermic concert. Heavy sounds and from another dimension, for an album that absolutely does not feel its 24 years, and that it still has got an incredible annihilating force. The encores, including Merciless from the eponymous Ep, make any residual light disappear.

To conclude this second multiform day, something completely different. It's time to dance on the graves of our lives led by Grave Pleasures and their successful and captivating mix of death rock, post punk and rock'n'roll. Led by a histrionic and charismatic Mat McNerney (Hexvessel) on the microphone and by an equally enthralling Juho Vanhanen (Oranssi Pazuzu) on the guitar, the Finnish band fascinates with its melodies that come straight into your head making their way through the noisy screechings of guitars and moving continuously on a driving rhythmic base. A music that takes possession of your body preventing you from staying still. A really dynamic end of the day after 11 intense hours of music!

Roadburn 2018 - Day 1

Roadburn 2018 - Day 1
[Harsh Toke + Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas + Converge + Årabrot + Waste of Space Orchestra]

Oggi è il turno dell'ultimo, stupendo, The Dusk in Us.

Tutto l'album.

Roadburn 2018 - Day 1
[Harsh Toke + Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas + Converge + Årabrot + Waste of Space Orchestra]

The 1,300 km road leading us to Tilburg is completely different from that crossed last year. No snowstorm, no endless queue of trucks. The closer we get to the goal, the more the Sun is dazzling and roads are free. San Diego Takeover has made its effect. Arrived in the Dutch city, we realize that the large space that this year's edition will dedicate to the psychedelic scene of San Diego has changed the climate, making it truly Californian. Only palms and beach are missing. 30 °C are already there.

We seize the legendary wristband, key access essential for the wonders of the next 4 days, and then wee look for a bit of relief in the darkness of the Main Stage at 013. Here we have a long Scandinavian night, lit by aurora borealis.

Indeed, the main stage will be inaugurated by Waste of Space Orchestra: super-combo born from the union of the Finns Oranssi Pazuzu and Dark Buddha Rising. And to immediately dispel any doubt, it must be said that the union of the two bands is not a simple sum of the parts, but a really third and strengthened entity. It oscillates between dark heaviness and lights that range from the depths of black holes to the dazzling glow of incandescent stars. Three voices alternate, powerful and alien (amazing Marko Neuman androgynous one), leading us through the stormy sea of riffs and dissonant phrasings. The crew is composed of ten musicians (two drums and two keyboards), a sort of Crimsonian vessel dispersed in a frozen sea. A project specifically created for this festival (and for which amazing videoclips have been created) that involves lovers of the most experimental sounds, leaving hope in a live record of this unprecedented (and unforgettable) experience.

Compulsory passage under the sun to go and lock us up in Het Patronaat for Årabrot. The atmosphere of the former church is pervaded by an almost suffocating heat that makes a strange pair with the Norwegian band and its songs born in the long Scandinavian nights, marked with frozen dark atmospheres. Heat sticks on us like the unpleasant feelings emanating from their darkwavish noise rock, and Kjetil Nernes's voice is that of a perverse vicar, soaked with sweat and bad vibes. The first part of the set focuses on the beautiful The Gospel, but it is the second part that convinces even more, thanks to truly incredible compactness and gait. The long almost noise sequence, with a convulsive jam character, closing the last song of the set, is really the acme of this concert.

Our convoy retraces its steps, back to the Main Stage, because it is time of the first of the two Converge concerts. This year Jacob Bannon is the curator of the festival and his band has two shows scheduled, both dedicated to the full performance of one of their albums. Today is the turn of the latest, wonderful, The Dusk in Us. The expectation is high and is fully repaid. The 13 songs flow in front of us and in our ears like a stream of consciousness, interrupted only by the captions of Bannon's words. Compact and violent, yet not without an emotional heart, as songs like the titletrack and Thousand Of Miles Between Us literally move for their touching and vibrant beauty. A unique experience.

But if we are already flying high, the most enthralling moment of the day arrives with Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas performing their Mariner in its entirety. We almost do not believe it. The whole album. With Julie Christmas. One of our most beloved singers since the times of Battle of Mice and Made Out of Babies. And we really had no idea what was waiting for us live. Just as the audience filling the 013 at the highest levels could not expect it, for what was announced as the last chance to listen to this collaboration live (extremely rare event also in the past). Julie Christmas's voice is a true revelation. Powerful, exciting and versatile, in its alternation of hysteria and delicacy. If on albums it is impressive, live it fascinates the listener. Impossible not to be harnessed in the network of schizophrenic melodies she creates and constantly changes, with incredible ease. Cult of Luna prove to be much more mature and consolidated musicians than when we saw them live in 2007, and the result is a futuristic, spatial and apocalyptic post-metal, to say the least, touching. A concert which can really be defined as unique and which leaves the feeling of having witnessed an experience unlikely to be repeated.

There is time to return to Earth and realize that all in all the sky has not yet sunk into the night, San Diego climate is still there, it is still hot, and we still have earthly needs that we feed in the streets of the festival, surrounded by enthusiasts like us, breathing this beautiful atmosphere of absolute relax that for four days suspends space and time.

To continue on this mood, nothing better than closing the evening with Harsh Toke. It's 11:30 pm, but the atmosphere at Het Patronaat is still overheated. San Diego Takeover really brought its long wave and its sunny beaches to Holland. In the last edition the quartet had dedicated its set to Roky Erickson and made us relive all the beauty and intensity of the psychedelia of the past. This year there are their songs, but the essence does not change. The four drag you on board their space skateboard and do everything to never get you off. Indeed, enraptured by the bass ride of Light Up and Live and with the mind twisted around the guitar solos, you would never really want to go down.

How to perfectly end a first day full of the most varied emotions. And it's only the first day!
