The Necromancers – Of Blood and Wine

The Necromancers – Of Blood and Wine
(Ripple Music, 2018)

The Necromancers – Of Blood and Wine
(Ripple Music, 2018)

In recent years the University of Occult Studies was born. A school of (black) magic similar to the one in which Harry Potter studies, but whose chair is entrusted to people like Ozzy, High Tide, Comus, Coven, as well as to a large group of directors of 70s horror B-movies, and to countless heavy metal musicians. French The Necromancers graduated in 2017 with their debut album (Servants of the Salem Girl) and took a specialization with Of Blood and Wine (2018). Courses on 70s occult rock, as well as those on doom metal and NWOBHM, have been carefully followed. And so were the lectures given by their fellow countryman Jean Rollin, a director who (still in the 70s) mixed foggy horror, eroticism and lysergic visions. Given the plenty of graduates in recent years, it will not be easy to find work. But these French guys prove to be able to rework what they have learned with personality, composing original and engaging melodies, always keeping an eye on the atmosphere. And, not common for those one graduating at this college, they have a singer with a warm deep voice. Alternating long tracks of progressive hard rock (masterfully flowing and always full of groove) and ballads tarnished by a layer of autumn mist, they prove to have all the credentials to play an important role in the medieval society portrayed by this university.

Wo Fat - Midnight Cometh

Wo Fat - Midnight Cometh
(Ripple Music, 2016)

Wo Fat - Midnight Cometh
(Ripple Music, 2016)

"Stoner rock is typically anchored to the 90s: now it sounds moldy, stale, without any creative drive". Insert latest Wo Fat album into your stereo and stay silent, please! Midnight Cometh is stoner to the marrow, and - as it should be - it reinvigorates and rejuvenates hard rock/heavy psych sounds of the 60s/70s without claiming to revolutionize anything, yet highlighting a disruptive creature, at times uncontainable. Pure energy originating from blues and exploding in ultra-distorted groovy riffs, then liquefying into wah wah deformed solos. With a warm massive tube sound, the texan trio raises the desert sand dust well known to the lovers of these sounds, and runs at full speed on horseback of the electric power (Riffborn) and then sinuosly changes direction, with long solo rides - sometimes blurred by psychedlic vapors (Of Smoke and Fog) - which, though hyper-dilated, never lose their groove and dynamism. Midnight Cometh is an unpredictable and exciting race: so full of ideas, even though it runs along roads known since the 60s. The American group has an inventive fluid and fun driving style: sitting in the passenger's seat is an unmissable experience for lovers of these roads, and for those who are convinced to know them by heart.
