High Reeper + Rancho Bizzarro + Greenkalma – 19.04.2019 – Fuzz n' Roll Fest - Scuola di musica Ritmi (Cecina, LI)

Ormai gli High Reeper sono di casa, a Cecina. Hanno anche le chiavi e ti fanno trovare la pasta pronta. Dopo il concerto del primo maggio dell’anno scorso si sono ambientati talmente bene che il concerto di stasera è una vera e propria rimpatriata tra amici.

Gli onori di casa sono affidati ai Greenkalma. Ci accolgono con i loro riffoni grassi e unti - che puzzano di erba e sudore (quello della pancia di Matt Pike) - e con la potenza della voce di Marco Lo Presti, che si fa largo prepotentemente nella nebbia sabbiosa sollevata dal gruppo. I Rage Against the Machine in versione desertica sono la sorpresa che non ti aspetti, ma che ben si innesta tra i brani massicci del gruppo, che suona ancor più robusto, fluido e sicuro rispetto al concerto di Castagneto Carducci di inizio anno.

I Rancho Bizzarro sono i padroni di casa, e mettono tutti a loro agio con un desert rock che, ogni volta che li vedo all’opera, suona sempre più potente e compatto. Non mancano le dilatazioni lisergiche e gli assoli disinvolti, ma è in direzione dei Riff, con la R maiuscola, che si sta sviluppando la musica della band. Riff che sono come scogli solidi in una musica liquida e in continua trasformazione. In questo arcipelago, i Rancho Bizzarro seminano citazioni e omaggi ai loro padri ispiratori, e ce li presentano con la naturalezza e la sicurezza del padrone di casa che, orgoglioso, ti mostra la sua collezione di quadri (o dischi!) migliori.

A chiudere la serata, sbocciando l’ultima bottiglia, ci pensano i cugini acquisiti (direttamente da Philadelphia) High Reeper. Se i gruppi precedenti avevano portato roba da fumare, gli americani hanno con loro una bella scorta di alcolici. Il loro doom metal elastico e carico di groove è infatti zuppo di birra, e questo lo rende scivoloso. Impossibile non farsi ubriacare dalle melodie oblique e dai riff sabbathiani costantemente ondeggianti. Il loro tour è appena iniziato, ma il nuovo batterista (Justin Di Pinto) dimostra di esser già entrato pienamente nell’oliato ingranaggio della band, anche se ancora non libera tutta la sua frenesia. Frenesia che invece non riescono a contenere gli altri, soprattutto Andrew Price (sinuoso come i suoi riff) e Zach Thomas (la cui voce è decisamente più in forma rispetto ad un anno fa). Dopo una bella serata tra amici come questa, non vediamo l’ora di farci invitare ancora una volta. Alla prossima!

By now High Reeper are like at home, in Cecina. They also have the front-door key and let you find pasta ready. After their concert of the first of May last year they set so well that tonight's concert is a real reunion with friends.

Greenkalma do the honours. They welcome us with their fat and greasy riffs - that smell of weed and sweat (that of Matt Pike's belly) - and with powerful Marco Lo Presti's voice, which makes its way overwhelmingly in the sandy fog raised by the band. The desert version of Rage Against the Machine is the surprise that you do not expect, but that fits well among the massive tracks of the band, which sounds even more robust and fluid compared to their concert in Castagneto Carducci at the beginning of the year.

Rancho Bizzarro are the hosts, and they put everyone at ease with a desert rock that, every time I see them at work, it always sounds more powerful and compact. There is no shortage of lysergic openings and flowing solos, but it is in the direction of Riffs, with a capital R, that the band's music is developing. Riffs that are like solid rocks inside a liquid constantly changing music. In this archipelago, Rancho Bizzarro sow quotes and tributes to their inspiring fathers, and present them to us with the naturalness of the landlord who proudly shows you his collection of the best paintings (or records!).

To close the evening, opening the last bottle, there are the American cousins (directly from Philadelphia) High Reeper. If the previous bands had brought smoking stuff, they have a good supply of alcohol with them. Their elastic groovy doom metal is soaked in beer, which makes it slippery. Impossible not to get drunk with the oblique melodies and the constantly swaying Sabbathian riffs. Their tour has just begun, but the new drummer (Justin Di Pinto) proves he has already fully entered the band's oiled gear, even if he still does not release all his frenzy. Frenzy that instead the otherscannot contain, especially Andrew Price (sinuous like his riffs) and Zach Thomas (whose voice is definitely in a better shape than a year ago). After an amazing evening with these friends, we're looking forward to being invited once again. See you next time!

Se l'omonimo EP autoprodotto uscito a fine 2018 aveva fatto drizzare le orecchie agli amanti delle sonorità stoner e anche a quelli che con il grunge ci hanno trascorso l'adolescenza, dal vivo i Greenkalma hanno messo in chiaro che quell'entusiasmo era stato ben riposto e che la parte migliore era fuori dal supporto digitale. E se i 5 pezzi strumentali dell'EP non avevano lasciato la sensazione della mancanza del cantato, va detto che l'ingresso in formazione di Marco Lo Presti alla voce ha segnato senz'altro un'evoluzione interessantissima del sound della band toscana. Nella cornice di un piccolo pub, con gli strumenti e gli ampli letteralmente in braccio al pubblico, i Greenkalma hanno surriscaldato l'atmosfera e han trascinato gli ascoltatori nella Palm Desert a cavallo dei '90 e dei '00. Suoni diretti dagli ampli, e impianto solo per la voce e la cassa della batteria. Tutto usciva potente: dalla robusta sezione ritmica di kyussiana memoria ai riff di chitarra plasmati con la stessa polvere. Incontenibile Marco Lo Presti alla voce, sia per la presenza scenica, sia per le ottime linee vocali, costruite ex novo in breve tempo. Non resta che seguire il nuovo corso a 4 elementi, e attendere il prossimo live!

Greenkalma - 01.05.2019 - Mister Wine Pub (Marina di Castagneto Carducci, LI)

If the self-produced, and self-titled, EP released at the end of 2018 had fascinated the ears to the stoner sound lovers and also to those who have spent their adolescence arm in arm with grunge, live Greenkalma have made it clear that the enthusiasm had been well placed and that the best part was out of the digital support. And if the 5 instrumental tracks of the EP did not leave the impression of the lack of vocals, it must be said that the add of Marco Lo Presti to the line-up certainly marked an interesting evolution in the sound of the Tuscan band. In the setting of a small pub, with the instruments and amplifiers literally held in the arms of the audience, Greenkalma overheated the atmosphere and dragged the listeners to Palm Desert at the turn of the '90s and the '00s. Sounds directly from the amps, and system only for the voice and the kick drum. Everything came out powerful: from the robust rhythm section of Kyussian memory to the guitar riffs shaped with the same dust. Irrepressible Marco Lo Presti on the microphone, both for the stage presence, and for the excellent vocal lines, built from scratch in a short time. You just have to follow the new 4-element course, and wait for the next live!
