Helmet – 28.09.2019 – Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

Helmet – 28.09.2019 – Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

Helmet – 09.28.2019 – Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

If air guitar is the favourite bedroom's sport for any metalhead, air drum is an even more exciting discipline to which no heavy music listener can escape. And if there is one band that seems to have been created expressly for air drum Olympics, that band is called Helmet. No one has ever had a more exciting groove than them. And even if John Stanier - drummer in their 90s historical records and the principal architect of that convulsive driving rhythmic motion typical of their music - is no longer in the lineup since a long time, I cannot miss the thirty-year anniversary tour of the band.
Tonight concert, for me, is a real "imaginary drums" competition, in which I take part with agonistic spirit, without saving the slightest drop of sweat.

Page Hamilton riffs are the fuel that drives the participants in the race (mostly veterans of 90s grunge and noise rock, but not of the nostalgic kind). His guitar is a spring, and he deforms it until it accumulates a frightening energy, to then release the tension with overwhelming rhythmic elasticity. Hamilton is a crossbreed between a high school physics professor and a skilled worker who perfectly handles the machinery of his work. The stage is a laboratory where Hamilton experiences the elasticity of his spring, rusted by dissonance and noise. But it is also a workbench on which he builds toys, for which all of us 90s children go crazy. These toys would not be enough to make us unleash in an air drum contest if there was not the right one on the drums. In the band since 2006, Kyle Stevenson has taken over the place that was Stanier's one. And with his extraordinary performance, he proves to deserve it!

In some moments the clean voice does not sound extremelyy precise (for example in some multi-voice choirs), but this does not affect the energy of the concert. After 30 years of career, Hamilton and his Helmet are still able to combine mathematical precision and unpredictability.

Super-sweaty I leave the Bloom. I'm not sure I won the air drum race, but a couple of days of pain in my neck and back proves I gave it my all. And how great Helmet are.

Primus – Sailing the Seas of Cheese

Primus – Sailing the Seas of Cheese
(Interscope Records, 1991)

Primus – Sailing the Seas of Cheese
(Interscope Records, 1991)

Hard life for a hard music bassist. He needs the ability to blend in on stage and in the flow of sound, not to obscure the exhibitionism of the singer and the verbosity of guitarists. Accurate, polite, silent, not imaginative, able to keep the songs on their feet while the others enjoy themselves. With these assumptions, nobody wants to play bass when fourteen years old. At least until the appearance of Les Claypool, who upsets the roles and rules of a heavy band with a surprising naturalness, becoming a model and reference point for the redemption of the four-stringed instrument, which from then on will become central in the (new) metal next to be born. Kirk Hammett's schoolmate, the crazy and unpredictable Les could not engage in the compact squared music played by Metallica, for which he auditioned after Cliff Burton death. He was definitely much more suitable for a gummy, elastic, deformable music, like Primus one. With its second album (Sailing the Seas of Cheese) the trio destroys hard music in the same way Minutemen destroyed punk rock: with a wacky irony worthy of Frank Zappa and a taste for extreme nonsense worthy of King Crimson in their Belew / Levin era. Claypool violent slap is a smack to the funky rhythms from which it was born, as well as its wild and delirious tapping is a smack to the technical funambulism of metal. Desecrating and Dadaist, Primus rock also owes a lot to Larry Lalonde derailing guitar trajectories and Tim Alexander frenetic groove, without which Claypool could not have drawn the surreal cartoon of Sailing the Seas of Cheese.

Corrosion of Conformity – Blind

Corrosion of Conformity – Blind
(Relativity, 1991)

“Some man recently asked me how it was possible for me to speak of disparity and injustice in the world when I’m a middle-class, white male. You don’t have to eat shit to know that it tastes bad.” K. Agell
Abrasivo, acido, incazzato, potente e travolgente, Blind è tutto ciò che i Metallica post Black Album avrebbero voluto suonare, senza però riuscirci.

Corrosion of Conformity – Blind
(Relativity, 1991)

“Some man recently asked me how it was possible for me to speak of disparity and injustice in the world when I’m a middle-class, white male. You don’t have to eat shit to know that it tastes bad.” K. Agell
In the early 90s Corrosion of Conformity are a new band. Only Reed Mullin's drums and Woody Weatherman's guitar remained in place. Yet the violent energy and the absence of compromises typical of the hardcore and thrash metal of the beginning are still there, and not only in the lyrics of the new singer Karl Agell ("we are looking for a singer halfway between James Hetfield, Ian Gillian and H.R. of Bad Brains" the ad said). Now, however, they have a completely different form. They are compressed and condensed in Sabbathian blues-style boulders and in outbursts worthy of the four horsemen. This very high pressure has changed the contours up to the point of generating riffs in which energy can not be contained, bolting away uncontrollably. The outcome is an extraordinary groove, running wildly through the mid tempo of the newly arrived Pepper Keenan's six-string. Groove which represents the seed from which most of the heavy music of the 90s will be born (whether you are talking about stoner, sludge, groove metal or grunge). Abrasive, acid, pissed off, powerful and overwhelming, Blind is all that post Black Album Metallica would have liked to play, but without succeeding.

Sahg - Memento Mori

Sahg - Memento Mori
[Indie Recordings, 2016]

Sahg - Memento Mori
[Indie Recordings, 2016]

Meticulous study, post-university technical preparation, maniacal precision, and ultra-finishing of every minute detail tend to obscure the spontaneous component of most Northern European musicians devoted to retracing the paths beaten by Lemmy & co. Sahg are no exception. The sounds of Memento Mori (their fifth album) are so clean and bright as to be almost strangers to a music that comes from the foggy slowed heavy metal of Black Sabbath. Not to mention melodies: always in focus even though daughters of Alice In Chains acid (and certainly not very rational!) nightmares. Yet Olav Iversen's band (with its revolutioned lineup, considering the recent replacement of drummer and solo guitarist) never sounds overly glossy or cold, but always engaging and exciting. This is because Iversen has got a clear mind and a precise goal: immediate direct music, never banal melodic sensitivity (with a slightly hallucinogenic aftertaste) and great synthesis capability. From the "Astronomy-Domine-soaked-in-molten-metal" that is Black Unicorn, to the alternation of progressive plots and boulders of riffs that is Sanctimony, passing through the psychedelic anthems of Take It to the Grave and (Praise the) Electric Sun, the eight songs of Memento Mori give out all the features of a fascinating album. Whether it has been designed and then built into a lab and it is not the outcome of irrational spontaneity, this is superfluous. In a time when heavy music has disappeared from mass audience listenings, Sahg prove to have the compositional abilities to recover that place.

Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger

Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
(A&M Records, 1991)

Pronti a esplodere.

Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
(A&M Records, 1991)

Ready to explode. Molded in Seattle during the 80s, new sounds were completely mature at the beginning of the new decade. Founders of the heavy side of Seattle sounds, Soundgarden released their explosive bomb in the autumn of 1991, shortly after Nirvana and Pearl Jam ones. Badmotorfinger is not so easy listening as Nevermind or Ten, and its impact was not so impetuous as Nevermind one, but its colossal riffing, undulating psychedelic melodies and Cornell vocal power rewrited rock history as much as other Seattle masterpieces did. A reinterpretation of 70s psychedelic hard rock, filtered through independent noise rock: the result is mighty, slowed and dilated as doom metal is, but supple and in constant motion, also thanks to the new bass player (Ben Shepherd). A fundamental step in heavy psych evolution.

Subrosa - For This We Fought the Battle of Ages

Subrosa - For This We Fought the Battle of Ages
(Profound Lore, 2016)

Subrosa - For This We Fought the Battle of Ages
(Profound Lore, 2016)

Destroying the personality of the individual, to make the community a huge cold-hearted machine, made of replaceable gears and parts. Subrosa puts into music the distopic (and revealing) visions of Soviet writer Yevgeny Zamyatin. With his novel We - published in England in the 20s - he imagined a world where emotions and passions are banned, made of glass - completely transparent - so that the Power could control every individual action. The Salt Lake City band models its gothic and apocalyptic doom metal on the atmospheres of the novel. Music is as heavy and oppressive as the grasp imposed by a state demanding to control every action of any individual. But it is at the same time emotional, romantic and warm, like the desire for rebellion and dissent creeping into some - isolated - rebels. Neurosis magmatic explosions are the passionate reaction for the annihilation of freedom. The vibrant flames of violins (at times reminiscent of the gothic theatrical doom of My Dying Bride) are the release of a repressed emotion. Happiness is not in that muffled world preventing us from accessing deeper emotions (such as pain), but in the freedom of choice, however painful and difficult it could be. Freedom defines our personality. Great Subrosa artistic freedom is proof of their gigantic personality.

Helmet - Strap It On

Helmet - Strap It On
(Amphetamine Reptile, 1990)

Seminale, e ancor oggi straordinariamente attuale.

Helmet - Strap It On
(Amphetamine Reptile, 1990)

A car accident. An old battered dusty car crashes at full speed on a concrete pylon. Twisted metal sheets, rusty iron bars coming out of the cracked wall, crazy glass slivers. Noise rock and metal explode in a loud crash. Among the ashes of  the impact there are the seeds of the alternative metal of the future. Published in 1990 by Amphetamine Reptile, in just 30 minutes Helmet debut album,  shows a new way, dotted with remains of iron, glass, cement and blood, which many bands will travel in years to come. Page Hamilton plays with dissonance like a Steve Albini in amphetamine, releasing with his guitar riffs which are nervous and sharp as a razor infected by tetanus, while John Stanier on drums cannot contain adrenaline, letting it flow in any direction, with frantic syncopated rhythms. In the NY band post-hardcore there is all the power and the groove (but also the discomfort) of the music that will be developed in the decade just begun. Seminal, and extraordinarily relevant still today.

Evilgroove - Cosmosis

Evilgroove - Cosmosis
(Self released, 2017)

Evilgroove - Cosmosis
(Self released, 2017)

The balance of brain, muscles, stomach and heart seems impossible in heavy music. Grounding its essence on the extremes, indeed, it often finds itself exalting one of these aspects, denying others. Evilgroove, instead, provide a combination of seemingly conflicting souls showing a strong personality.
If the cover of their debut album - Cosmosis - and the hypnotic intro of the opening track - Turn Your Head - recall the psychedelic progressive metal of the band captained by Maynard Keenan (feeling which is strenghtned in the whole album by the liquid sound of the bass climbing on the brainy rhythms of the drum), the mighty guitar riffs have got their heart in the Southern U.S. so dear to the band of another Keenan: Pepper.
Departing from rural America (or from the fog of the Po Valley!), the band from Bologna ventures into mental journeys, into a sci-fi future. Whiskey bottle in one hand, they meet the aliens. Fraz voice is that of the pilot of the spaceship: the American with cowboy hat on his head and chewing gum in his mouth, sort of Phil Anselmo following Alice in Chains crooked tunes. The groove (as you can easily imagine from the name of the band) is the fuel that drives the spaceship, which is not likely to ever go into reserves of energy, even in the more atmospheric or complex passages. Even when the (usually robust) distortion leaves room for oriental melodies, there is always a dynamic rhythmic section that keeps buzzing the ears of the listener.
The stoner metal of the quartet from Bologna succeeds in sounding dry, powerful, direct and no-nonsense despite the complexity of some passages, showing how much the blending of contrasts is perfectly balanced. Ten songs that are printed in mind right from the outset, claiming the Play button at the end of each listening.

Red Fang - Only Ghosts

Red Fang – Only Ghosts
(Relapse, 2016)

Godi solo a metà.

Red Fang – Only Ghosts
(Relapse, 2016)

Listening to Red Fang music on records, and not at a live show, it is like drinking a small beer. You are only partly satisfied. The band from Portland has always shown its best on stage than locked inside a car radio, a living room stereo or iPhone headphones. To be fully savored, the groove and the raw energy of their songs require smell of sweat, elbows against yout teeth, and maybe a beer (pint, not half pint!) poured on your face. For gourmets who prefer to listen to music without risking their lives in the mosh, Red Fang wrote Only Ghosts. With their fourth album, lightening the burden of mud and alcoholism, and focusing a bit more on melody and arrangements, the band sounds involving even listened in a car radio (not so much in the living room or through the headphones, they have not  written a flabby album!). The skeleton of their music is always made by extremely dynamic distorted riffs and heavy metal blows, yet there is a slight psychedelic touch, almost garage tasted, which infiltrates among these ones (and this is emphasized by the reverb of Aaron Beam clean vocals). So dry, direct and immediate (thanks to the sound engineering by Ross Robinson - production and collaboration in arrangement - and Joe Barresi - mixing), tracks like Cut It Short or Shadows are exciting even if listened without the adrenaline atmosphere of their shows. And they prove how much the current Red Fang are getting closer to the mainstream stoner rock of Queens of the Stone Age than to that one of Mastodon and Melvins. Is this a betrayal of the ethic based on proud vulgarity and alcoholic brutality, or is this the ultimate maturity of the capacity of synthesis between catchy melodies and funny riffs full of heaviness, groove and energy? I bet on the latter hypothesis.

Heavy Psych Sounds Fest - Volume III - Day 1

Heavy Psych Sounds Fest - Volume III – Day 1
[Glowsun + Fuzz Orchestra + Mos Generator + Isaak]

Heavy Psych Sounds Fest - Volume III – Day 1
[Glowsun + Fuzz Orchestra + Mos Generator + Isaak]

Leave the office at 19:30, rush on the highway, swallow a sandwich on the road trying to lose the least possible of this first day of Heavy Psych Sounds Fest - Volume III. Done.

We enter the MU on the notes of Isaak Fountainhead and we stop right away there in the first room, in front of the smallest stage of the festival, for the last 20 minutes of the set of the band from Genova. Four songs, all from their latest album, Sermonize. Overly high volume and distortion at its maximum: the outcome is a big whack in the teeth, that does not penalize the music of the quartet. Giacomo H Boeddu voice is amazing and effective as usual (although a bit devoured by the gigantic sound), as well as the new drummer shows remarkable groove and skill. Too bad to have missed Void Of Sleep and Black Bone, but this is still a great start to the evening!

In the meantime, on the biggest stage, Mos Generator got ready to play. A profusion of hard rock riffs with stoner aftertaste inundates the audience. The American trio has got a strong blues attitude - evident in the taste and touch of Tony Reed solos, really great guitarist! - but there is also room for heavier sounds and phrasings, really close to metal rides. Some minor problems with the monitor speaker for the guitarist - who, as good rodie of himself, solves the matter unplugging it and putting it by a side! - but nothing that minimally affects the impact of their live.

Back to the smaller room and it is time for Fuzz Orchestra. It is like immersing ourselves in a fragmented  schizophrenic soundtrack showing, from song to song, its many faces at first hidden. The atmosphere is that of  a 70s poliziottesco, yet reinterpreted by King Crimson of Red era with a mountain of fuzz, some overwhelming slowdowns in Melvins style and even some heavy shifts into industrial shores. The synergy of guitar-bass-keyboard and samples is perfect and it amplifies the hypnotic daze induced by dilations and obsessive beats saturated with fuzz and magnified by an annihilating volume. Their heavy-noise deviates a bit from the rest of the bands of the festival, but it is perfectly themed for its alienating force. If you do not have listened to them live, you absolutely have to look for their next gig!

Finally Glowsun. A sea of effects for Johan Jaccob guitar, leading the French trio into a sinusoidal stream of space rock, through continuous ups and downs of sound intensity, through psychedelic openings and more purely stoner acceleration (yet always drowned in a sea of wah wah and flanger). The impression is that of being suspended, waiting for a re-start that never arrives. The sound is continually reshaped and transformed, fraying a little bit the compactness of songs. A final of evening wholly unbalanced on atmosphere - rather than on heaviness and groove - in the name of a lysergic magmatic space rock.

After the first two Roman editions, Heavy Psych Sounds Fest has moved to the center-north of Italy, doubling the stages and offering an incredible, unmissable, bill. MU is a fitting location both from the aesthetic point of view and the logistic one, for the alternation of the bands on two stages. Too bad, however, for the acoustics - very good the one of the big stage, alas penalizing that of the small one (at least in this first evening). The 13 bands in the lineup are among the most interesting of heavy-psych international panorama, and it is no exaggeration to say that it is a absolute "prima" for a country like Italy, certainly not standing out for festivals. An additional reason for being here this evening and to not miss the second part tomorrow night!

Mutoid Man + Karl Marx was a Broker + “Operazione Intergalattica Spaziale!” + Dust Storm Warning - 13.08.2016 – MusicaW Festival (Castellina Marittima, PI)

Mutoid Man + Karl Marx was a Broker + “Operazione Intergalattica Spaziale!” + Dust Storm Warning
13.08.2016 – MusicaW Festival (Castellina Marittima, PI)

Infine Mutoid Man.

Mutoid Man + Karl Marx was a Broker + “Operazione Intergalattica Spaziale!” + Dust Storm Warning
08.13.2016 – Musica W Festival (Castellina Marittima, PI)

I return to MusicaW after some years of absence because this amazing festival (well organized, fantastic location, free entry and great bands) takes place in mid-August, exactly in those days I usually am on vacation, far away from my areas. Considered the bands playing in this edition, this year I cannot (at least partially!) miss it!

Dust Storm Warning (from Lecce) usher in the evening on the stage of the small, yet extremely fascinating, theatre in the green municipal park of Castellina Marittima. Their stoner-blues is entertaining, enhanced by powerful precise drums and by a typically hard rock warm rough voice. Maybe they need to improve something in the couple bass/guitar, but the right ingredients are all there.

“Operazione Intergalattica Spaziale!” are a trio involved in a heavy distorted funky, mixing together bouncing groove and tough stoner rock. Compact and dynamic, they have their strenght in the elastic couple bass/drums. Guitar lacks a bit of fluidity, but all in all they are an interesting discover, to be deepened.

Unlike the concert in Calenzano a few months ago, tonight Karl Marx was a Broker play with their complete lineup and the difference is truly remarkable. If they were convincing in that concert, tonight they are really exciting. Their progish math rock is powerful and compelling and it gains in fascination thanks to the space atmospheres of the melodies, to which samples and videos contribute in fundamental way. The feeling is that of being inside a metal space rock. If Porcupine Tree Anesthetize is one of your favourite songs (as it is for me!), KMWAB music is pure pleasure!

Finally Mutoid Man. I have already attended one of their concerts and so I am ready to what I will find on stage: three “crazy” guys who enjoy playing at full speed, notching up thrash metal rhythms, heavy old school band melodies and post hardcore fury. One hour show – and not just music! It seems to watch a Beavis & Butthead episode where heavy music is at the same time honored and teased, with adolescent exaltation and laughters. In addition to the songs of the two albums released to date (Helium Head and Bleeder), tonight they play also some unreleased pieces - crazy and uncontainable as the rest of their production – and the “cover” of a couple of not properly “heavy” hits (Don’t let me be Misunderstood and Purple Rain). Listen to Ben Koller after only a week from Converge gig is something amazing: super-powerful, hyper-precise, with killing groove and fantasy, he is a truly versatile drummer and (to me!) the added value in Mutoid Man. Because of the nature of its sound, Stephen Brodsky ultra-distorted guitar is a bit too devoured by Nick Cageao distorted bass: yet the final result is nonetheless a hurricane of energy, as well showed by the wild audience. There are bands with the incredible ability of entertaining you regardless of the quality of sounds or the perfect execution of songs. Mutoid Man are certainly part of this category.

Farflung + Gordo + Black Snake Moan – 18.06.2016 – Viterbo (Secret Show)

Farflung + Gordo + Black Snake Moan – 18.06.2016 – Viterbo (Secret Show)

Farflung + Gordo + Black Snake Moan – 06.18.2016 – Viterbo (Secret Show)

Gorilla’s Family manages to get the last date of Farflung European Tour: an amazing secret show. Location is simply perfect. Thanks to the hosts/event organizers, the atmosphere is the ideal mix of conviviality, will to have fun and passion for music. Exactly the right mood for the concert of a band that has made the (mental and lysergic) trip the very essence of its sound.

It just got dark when Black Snake Moan starts to play. One man band (the first one!) from Tuscia, his blues sounds sometimes melancholic sometimes a bit more groovy: it moves on a back of a mule through cactus and the dust and sand of a desert with an unknown name, and it has some really interesting lysergic (in Doors style) openings. Apt prelude for the attitude of this night.

But the warm wavy notes of the introduction are suddenly swept away by Gordo and their bursts of machine gun fire. On their FB page they report the definition of their sound as “like Carcass playing Jethro Tull” and maybe this expression gives an idea of what awaits the listener. Bass, drums and piano, their sound is the mingling of many different genres and influences capable of creating something new and perfectly balanced in its delirium (without being reminiscent of other bands focused on the bass/drums pairs like Zu and their “clones”, and having their own personal style). If the bass feeds on stoner-like riffs, the piano (calling it keyboards it is almost reductive, o at least misleading) stands upon classical music and 70s prog rock. Drums are a hardcore war machine, meeting point of the forces of the trio from Milan: forces which are at the same time attractive and distancing. The audience (Farflung included!) enjoys their gig a lot and asks them an encore. Personally, I am waiting for their album, hoping to attend to one of their concerts very soon.

And here we are at the moment in which time dilates, getting deformed and deforming the space in which we are: Farflung flood all those present with the fluidity and sinuousity of ther super psychedelic space rock, flavoured with stoner. Captained by Tommy Grenas – historical member and co-founder of the band from LA – the 6 musicians perform a really amazing space concert. The synergy of Farflung members is something unique, indeed. Naturally a bit tired after 24 gigs in 24 days – and with Abby Travis visibly having a cold! – their show is flawless: each musical instrument vibrates distinctly, each effect clearly articulates its voice, the whole perfectly amalgamates and their music enchants the listener. If all of them are great musicians, I have to admit that Grenas is the one who mostly impresses me: his voice in a multilayer of sound effects, synths always perfect, his abililty to masterly coordinate the multitude of sonic lines of all the members of the band. A great musician and a sort of electronic space conductor. More than 20 years since the release of 25,000 Feet Per Second, the sound has evolved (but it has never lost its nature) and – with the exception of Grenas and Ether – there have been many changes in the line-up, yet Farflung has still a lot to say (and the just released 5 gives striking confirmation!) and above all they are able to perform a concert of pure psychedelic space rock that has got few equals.
