In a historical moment in which we have to settle for streaming events listened to with our ass on the sofa to have a shared experience between band and audience, it sounds not only nostalgic but also romantic to remember a real concert. A concert that in itself did not claim to have anything romantic  Sweat, beer and tube distortions, in a microscopic room overcrowded with friendly faces. Aspects that are an integral part of the live experience and that, shortly thereafter, we would have been forced not to be able to re-experience, but which are essential to convey all the energy of a rock band, especially of a band like Duel. And that evening in late February they played one of their best concerts among the many I attended. With the songs of the latest album, Valley of Shadows, perfectly integrated with the old ones, and able to add a touch of melody to the groove of their sandy riffs. In the evening when Italy began to realize the Coronavirus danger, but still was unaware of the upheavals that this would have entailed in our social relationships, an event of pure shared energy such as Duel's concert is a memory of resistant romance. Sharing the energy of a concert means giving back, as listeners, what music has given us, supporting today more than ever all underground realities (bands, labels, clubs, festivals, booking agencies, record shops...) that will come out of this disaster with broken bones. This is the only way to let the energy flow out of the amplifiers again.

There are bands you discover for the first time live at a festival and they convince you to the point of going to listen to them the next night in a venue not far from your home town. It doesn't often happen that these elements coordinate so well, but in October 2016 it happened with Deville. And when they come back to Italy after just over two years and play exactly in your town, this is one of those concerts that you can't really miss.
The amazing thing of a band like Deville is that you get to the end of the concert and you don't even realize it. Their mixture of stoner rock and heavy metal keeps the level of groove of the setlist always on the maximum power: they pass from one song to the next and you have the impression of never scaling the gears, yet of getting always higher. If the songs from Make It Belong To Us are a certainty and it's cool to find them live, the songs from the brand new Pigs With Dogs are a confirmation of the quality of the Swedish quartet and on stage they gain in power and impact. The other added value are Deville themselves, who on the small stage of the Café Albatross do not save a drop of sweat and sound like in front of the audience of great occasions. At the next meeting with the Swedes, for a new massive dose of stoner metal riffs.

The Bugz – 02.02.2019 – Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

The Bugz – 02.02.2019 – Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

Staremo a vedere!

The Bugz – 02.02.2019 – Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

After hiding in the underground for a few years, the buzzing bugs are back for one evening (only one, they say) to infest their town. With the typical bully, party and noisy attitude that had made them one of the funniest bands in the area, they came back to light by bringing together the latest lineup (the one that released Confusion in 2014). And it is precisely on the music composed by this lineup that tonight's concert is focused - starting from where everything had stopped, rather than retracing the whole path begun in the 90s. And this is a good thing also for those who, like me, follow them from the beginning and have witnessed all the transformations of the band: because if there is something on which their noisy rock n 'roll has never lingered is nostalgia. And nobody, tonight, feels the need for nostalgia. On the contrary, we need music full of groove, compact and funny. And this is what The Bugz show they can still do very well. Will the bugs come out again from the basements to infest the town? We'll see!

The Well – 05.10.2018 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

The Well – 05.10.2018 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

The Well – 10.05.2018 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

It is now a well-established tradition to get ready for a festival with a warm-up concert. Also this time, exactly a week before Desertfest Antwerp, we enter into the stoner/doom mood with a concert directly at home. The Well prepare an aperitif based on sulfur riffs proudly inspired by the first Black Sabbath, and they serve it in the intimate and dark Albatross. The cocktail is a pure extract of mist, death knell and abandoned cemeteries, and it turns the venue into a damp disturbing crypt. A secret ingredient directly from ancient Egypt (maybe the same used by Lucifer) makes melodies oblique, and soon the catacomb is transformed into the basement of a pyramid infested with a curse. Drowned in a sea of echoes and reverberations, the interweaving of (male and female) voices makes the aperitif lysergic, but the compact riffs and great groove of the Austin trio keep the evening on very high levels of energy.
Funny and exciting, this cocktail is perfect in view of the dinner that awaits us in Antwerp (on whose stage we will also find The Well). Now that we have whetted our appetite, we are ready for the blowout!

Those who stayed at home for bad weather, and those who were on Easter holidays, really missed a fantastic evening of pure rock. Impregnated with all the beauty that the 70s gave us, Wedge actualize and make alive and energetic a genre that risks being pure revival. And if in the just released Killing Tongue all this was clearly written (or rather "pressed"), tonight's concert has definitely emphasized the artistic liveliness of this band highlighting its value and skill. Kiryk Drewinski's guitar is the soul of this trio and the essence of their songs. Riffs, phrasings and solos vibrate with pure electric energy and make it impossible to keep your feet still in front of the stage. And if keyboards (which alternate with the bass and sometimes replace it as Doors used to do) scatter vaguely psych charm on the songs of the Berlin trio, Holger "The Holg" Grosser killing groovy drums are that driving force that makes the difference with many other bands of the genre and gives a completely different pace to the set. An hour of music all in one breath, in which the tracks of the brand new album alternate with those of the homonymous debut, and to which is added a quarter of an hour of boogie as a prize for the not numerous, but certainly warm, audience. An intimate concert - for the venue and for the spectators - but with all the beauty and impact of a set scheduled at Desertfest.

Capt Crunch and the Bunch - 27.01.2018 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

Capt Crunch and the Bunch - 27.01.2018 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

Ah no!

Capt Crunch and the Bunch - 01.27.2018 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

Tonight I'm at the Piper, it's 1965, and for the first time I wear the miniskirt. Well, not exactly that! We are at the Albatross in Pisa, it's 2018, and for how much out-of-date I may look like, I'm not dressed like my aunt! Yet, at the third time in less than a year since the release of their Crimine Beat, Capt Crunch and the Bunch once again transport me back in time, in that era when garage and beat filled up the "cool" clubs also up and down our country. All this without any taste for revival, because their rock (melodic and rough at the same time) has got a fresh and disruptive personality, both in the original songs and in the (inevitable, given the genre) covers - among these Ma beata te by Primitives. And this undoubtedly emerges also from their lyrics, in Italian, always cutting and up to date and that, during the concert, seem to give rise to a dialogue with the audience. We can feel the raw outspokenness of musicians who are thoroughly familiar with the (proto)punk lesson from which they come, especially with a three-pieces rhythm section (drums-bass-rhythm guitar) capable of transmitting groove and engaging the audience. An audience that lets itself be carried away in the "softer" moments as in the noisiest or psychedelic ones, and warmly returns all the energy that overwhelms it from the stage.

It's one of those just perfect and unmissable events. One of your favorite bands beginning its new European tour right from your city and from its only truly rock venue.

It is also the first ever concert with the new drummer, replacing JD Shadowz, unfortunately unable to leave the States for this tour. And so, despite having already seen them live four times in just over a year, this fifth live still has the flavour of novelty and is imbued with expectations.

As soon as they get on Albatross stage, Duel immediately made it clear that they are going to kick the ass tonight too. The attack is a hat-trick of their first, amazing, album Fears of the Dead, before giving way to the title track of the new Witchbanger. Firm the keystones of the band, Justin Collins on the drum is a winning card, mighty and with great groove, able to balance out the absence of the official drummer (not an obvious thing, given JD's skill and stage presence).

With a setlist fishing almost equally from the two album - and almost in their entirety - the Austin band rattles of groove, riffs and solos in great quantity, thus overheating the atmosphere of Cafè Albatross and its truly super-participant and highly prepared audience. Tracks run one after the other in rapid succession, without dead moments and always with great groove. The heavy psych peak is the grand finale with the beautiful Tigers and Rainbows flowing into the (for me) even more amazing Locked Outside - one of those songs that seems to be specially made to close concerts, leaving you with the desire to listen to another one (and another and another!).

The fifth time I hear them live in just over a year and a half and two killer albums in their discography, to confirm Duel as a great live band - both on a big renowned stage (like the Canyon Stage at Desertfest Antwerp) and on the stage of a small club like Cafè Albatross. Who has still not listened to them live, remedy absolutely in one of the next imminent dates!

More than 80 decibels) May Cause Permanent Impairing of Hearing !
[R.T.]

1000 Mods + Mr.Bison - 05.05.2017 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

What is heavier on the eardrums? 200 decibels of black metal or 200 decibels of stoner rock? Do I lose more weight having a sauna with 90% humidity at Wolves in the Throne Room concert or at 1000 Mods one? Within two days, we "test our body" with two concerts as much diverse as in the same way physically demanding.

Albatross is initially overheated by Mr. Bison distortions. Forced to set their sounds with the help of the audience (and this makes their concert even more entertaining and funny), in the first songs the Tuscan band has got a really overly highlighted guitar, to the point of hiding the amazing rhythmic work of the drummer and Matteo Sciocchetto's great vocal performance. Over time, things get better and the 3 once again prove to be the extraordinary riff machine we well know, thanks to their super-groovy stoner rock.

The Greeks 1000 Mods respond to the fire by raising their volume even more. We had to imagine it, considering the title of their latest album: Repeated Exposure to High Sound Levels (More than 80 decibels) May Cause Permanent Impairing of Hearing! A Sunn amp head crushes us from the first riff, and we are immediately swallowed by a lazy distortion flow, moving at reduced speed, but always with a great groove thanks to the drummer. At first guitars completely drown the voice, which only after several minutes can finally pierce the wall of sound. It seems to be in front of Kyuss (their main source of inspiration), yet even more doped, moving to the slow motion through a Grand Canyon burned by the Sun. Hot, burning hot, hellish. The venue is chock-a-block, it seems there is no more space to move around. Yet the music of the Greek band has the energy to trigger rushes of mosh. While aware of the great attention the band has received in the last period, I would never expect such a large and passionate audience! Deserved enthusiasm, given the quality of the music of the band, though well set in its genre and clearly inspired by the founding fathers. At the end of the gig, we find ourselves liquefied by the monstrous volumes as well as by the extreme heat and humidity, which leaves a thick layer of sweat on the ground in pure rock n 'roll spirit! (Does your sweaty armpit stink more after a black metal concert or after a stoner one?!)

Nick Oliveri solo tour must be a prescription of his psychoanalyst, in my opinion. Play, play, play. Always. Even when his (many) bands are resting. Never accumulate energy  too long. Never stop. The therapy involves a series of acoustic concerts, where maybe Nick could pour out his adrenaline in a more controlled conscious and self-limiting way. The doctor, anyway, has not come to terms with his patient. Indeed, even an acoustic guitar and a tiny club are enough to free his energy in an irrational and exuberant way. So, no one should expect rearranged songs for the occasion, nor a rationally and meticulously studied setlist, nor formally perfect execution. Nor even candles, stool and that intimate atmosphere of MTV Unplugged. Apart from a few Queens of the Stone Age songs (Auto Pilot, Another Love Song) which are better suited to the acoustic reinterpretation - and that sound really exciting, showing Nick most "sensitive" side - the rest is the overwhelming fury of a punk concert played with only a microphone and an acoustic guitar. Nick shouts to the point of swallowing the microphone, with neck veins ready to explode, and having a lot of fun. He does not realize that behind him there is no band and that there is no distortion pedal under his feet. Indeed, he seems at ease in not hiding his energy behind a wall of distortion. His voice - always powerful, dirty and angry - is what sustain the musical side of the show, on the whole certainly not flawless. Because this is a show, more than a concert. A show in which the exchange with the audience is continuous (to the point of inviting someone in the audience to play guitar on Feel Good Hit of the Summer to let him just sing the song) and drinks offered (and returned) are countless. Perhaps the therapeutic purpose of the tour has been reached. This is not due to the self control that an acoustic solo concert could determine (the evening ends with frenzy Nick yelling Six Shooter "a cappella" - his own words), but certainly it is due to a significant deepening of human relations. And fun. Because Nick enjoys himself a lot  and entertains a packed Albatross. How not to love Nick?

To enclose (sidereal) space in a room. This is Monkey 3 live. If their music is already highly "cosmic" on recordings, concerts are definitely what gives to their nature its highest and most complete expression. Supported in this abstraction by the continuous videoprojections on the background of the stage and on the kick drum, it is actually the sound flow of the band to make this trip possible. Boris guitar is the 6 strings equivalent of the Pied Piper  flute of the Grimm fairytale. His melodic lines (emphasized by a capillary and never banal use of effects) bend at their command so much the other instruments as we listeners - literally enraptured in the sound kaleidoscope surrounding us. Stunning the songs from the latest Astrasimmetry, but overall there is not a single failure in the atmosphere of the entire (intense) setlist. Keyboards are the solvent in which the flowing, hypnotic, sometimes prog rhythmic waves of bass and drums dissolve themselves. There are no smudges, the sound wave is compact and sinuous at a time. Pure psychedelia which, though starting from 60s springs, runs its course in the sounds of the 90s/00s and points to faraway seas. A trip not to be missed, which can not remain restricted in the grooves of a vinyl record.

The Gooch Palms + Unkle Funkle - 24.11.2016 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

The Gooch Palms + Unkle Funkle - 24.11.2016 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

The Gooch Palms + Unkle Funkle - 11.24.2016 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

Pre-weekend party with a concert at Cafè Albatross.

Unkle Funkle, first of all. He is a strange crossbreed between J Mascis and a Physics student lost in a 30 years ago videogame. With admirable audacity he launches "improbable" bases (whose sounds are reassessing those of Bontempi System 5), and with emotional ardor and passion he performs touching reinterpretations of 80s pop classics. Three guitar notes and two tons of shamelessness. Extrapolating from the reactions of those present: "If I were completely wasted, this would be the best concert of my life!"

In their taste for excess and kitsch, The Gooch Palms are definitely not pure and simple entertainment: they do play and they do it well! The Australian duo (two voices, guitar for him, floor tom + snare drum for her) seems to have an overdose of Coca Cola and fluo bear-shaped gummy candies, considering how much exaggerated, bubbly, sparkling they sound. Their garage-pop-punk'n'roll is sugary as (pink!) cotton candy, but it sounds by no means trite. On the contrary! Maybe for the punkish nature à la Ramones, or thanks to some phrasings reminiscent of certain 80s American indie rock, constantly on the edge between catchy melody and subtle lo-fi dissonance, or maybe for their groove, the fact is that it is really worth to see them live!

One of the greatest aspects of the small clubs is that sense of “intimacy” they transfer to the live experience. Talking about Sasquatch at the Cafè Albatross, the sense of intimacy becomes a proper physical sensation, made of the sweat and hits on strings and drumheads that the trio from Los Angeles pours over an audience with its face stuck to theirs on stage (well, the stage is more or less 30 cm high, and so there is a complete fusion of band and audience). In just one hour of music, in a small hall with black walls (covered with movie posters, cd covers and a thick red velvet Twin Peaks-like curtain), in a wet rainy town, Keith Gibbs, Jason Casanova e Craig Riggs (on drums in place of Rick Ferrante for the European tour) succeed in carrying all the participants into the dry, dusty warm of the Californian desert, lost on a flat field of red soil, under a dazzling sun. The bass – with its rich sound and its magmatic riffs, at times serried, at times dilated – is the backbone of a mighty Kyuss-like stoner that makes heads and bodies swing and oscillate in perfect union with its groove. Guitar and voice have got the taste of too much alcohol and too much “smoke” and they lighten the head that in the meanwhile is following the enthralling rhythm of the drums. And besides, Sasquatch seem to feel right at home and they constantly interact with the audience. The general feeling is that of a party, listening to friends playing with their band. Sasquatch really kicks ass, the Cafè Albatross is the ideal location, the atmosphere is the right one. Pisa definetely needs more concerts like this!
