Fuzz Orchestra - 10.02.2018 - Lumiere (Pisa)

Fuzz Orchestra - 10.02.2018 - Lumiere (Pisa)

Fuzz Orchestra - 02.10.2018 - Lumiere (Pisa)

In the final evening of Festival di Sanremo, our Teatro Ariston is the former Cinema Lumiere in Pisa. No flowers, hosts or TV assistants. Here, for real, we have Italian music, telling Italy. There can be no better band than the Fuzz Orchestra, to tell us about the dark side of our country (a dark side lurking also in a quiet provincial town like Pisa, as evidenced by the delirious shooting of the previous day in pure poliziottesco style). And there can not be a better stage for their music than that of a former cinema adapted to concert hall. Even more so if this place, hidden in the heart of the town, has hosted arthouse films for over a century and, for some time, porn movies.

The approach of the Milanese band is raw and elegant at the same time, like a movie with Gian Maria Volonté, with the crime of the slums mingling with political intrigues. Irrational and unpredictable violence, Years of Lead atmosphere, heavy solid riffs dripping fuzz from all the cones of the amp (gorgeous Luca Ciffo's red Simms Watts, looking like a control table of 2001: A Space Odyssey). The trio produces a devastating sound pressure, yet it tells its black story with class and refinement (Paolo Mongardi on drums is literally hypnotic). But above all paying great attention to the reconstruction of the atmospheres, as much important as the mathematical intertwining of riffs and the Sabbathian boulderish lines, in the structure of the sonic tale. Managed by Fabio Ferrario, who juggles keyboards, synths, vinyls and cassettes, samples are as fundamental as the fog in Milano Calibro 9 or Giulio Sacchi's mocking gaze in the unforgettable final of Milano Odia: la polizia non può sparare.

With a set with many songs from the latest, wonderful, Uccideteli tutti! Dio riconoscerà i suoi Fuzz Orchestra makes us sink back into a really contemporary past. A few days before elections in which (neo)fascist fronts seem to have raised their heads, the black story written by the Milanese band does not seem novelesque at all.

Morkobot + Reznik – 21.01.2017 – Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Morkobot + Reznik – 21.01.2017 – Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Morkobot + Reznik – 01.21.2017 – Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Exactly 9 years after my last sighting, I find myself once again in front of Morkobot spaceship, this time landing on a mid-winter sunny Sunday at Ganz of Bicchio, while a few steps away unaware families are walking along the promenade in Viareggio.

Reznik, from Pisa, do the honours. Their alternative rock is dissonant and nervous, with solid foundations thanks to a really powerful bass. The guitar plays with perverse melodies in Jesus Lizard  style and with rhythmic fragments of Fugazi school, while the singer psychotic snarl crawls among the notes. It's like breathing the atmosphere of drunken Texas at the turn of the 80s and 90s. Aliens are not welcomed with melodic light signals in style Close Encounters of the Third Kind, yet with the disturbing memory of Roswell autopsy.

The response of the three extraterrestrials is an ultra-heavy metallic bombardment, launched at irregular rhythms difficult to understand for the human brain. Gummy elastic riffs alternate with square powerful blows. Almost ten years have passed since my last contact with Morkobot two basses, and compared to the past the sound has now become more metallic, digital, surgical, yet without losing visionary power. A new drummer, and more geometric compact songs. Twice requested by the terrestrials under the stage, the encore is dedicated to more dilated and psychedelic atmospheres, to remind us that space trips are not only hypertechnological labyrinthine nightmares, but also mental and spiritual journeys. Once again it was great to be abducted by these aliens.

After such an intense love, a scorching disappointment burns like a betrayal and it is human to turn love into hate. A second chance is not denied to anyone, anyway. Especially to Zu. Once upon a time (2005/2006) Zu were my favourite live band, and user to collect their concerts. Their Pattonian, hyperkinetic and neurotic math rock, gradually louder and louder and tending to an uncontrolled noise, was enthralling and exciting, particularly live. Born musicians, on records they were unable to express that fury and that desire to move the boundaries always a bit further, so typical of their concerts (at least till Carboniferous, in my opinion the only album able to catch a glimpse of that disruptive creativity). Then the farewell of Jacopo Battaglia and the dissolution. In 2014 the band reformed with Gabe Serbian of The Locust on drums. I saw them live once again, with the expectation of who meets his ex girlfriend after so many years. The disappointment is gigantic. The trio has abandoned rhythm and groove in favour of stinging and obsessive drones, disturbing noise, and cold (however technically excellent) drums. The ex girlfriend had become a coyote-ugly.

Tonight they come to visit me a few steps from home. I have to grant them a second chance. Especially because now they have a new drummer: Tomas Järmyr (already seen twenty days ago, with Motorpsycho).

Overcome the shock for mammoth volumes (especially the sax) swallowing drums (at least for a third of the concert), I find myself in an industrial, really heavy, version of Red (King Crimson). A wall of overwhelming sound in which you can perceive the rhythms of the past, even if these have become ultra-heavy, squared and cold, and they push through their way with difficulty in the magma of sound. Technically extraordinary but light years away from Battaglia's unpredictable personality, Järmyr's almost prog metal touch is a perfect representation of the current Zu. Cold experimenters on the borders of auditory sustainability, and no longer uncontrollable and tumultuous undergorund artists, in continuous creative ferment. A part of the impetuous energy that had made me love them now seems resurfaced and reshaped towards the most extreme heaviness, but too soon it sinks into an ocean of chaos that goes beyond my listening skills.

When Massimo Pupillo threw the audience at the mercy of one of his raving and hyperviolent solos, at inhuman volume, we perceive how the noise, the authentic one, is a challenge to every harmonic convention possessed by the listener. Eardrums are drilled by waves of feedbacks, and constant ultra-low drones fill every space. Zu have not lost the desire (and the ability) to move the boundaries beyond the known limits, but at times I sincerely struggle to follow the direction they traced.

My ex girlfriend had been on a diet since last time, and even though she deafened me once again, she recovered some of the lost charm. But it's too late to come back together. Now we are too different entities, difficult to reconcile. I will keep the memory of the sweat that we spent together in those concerts of my University days, with a touch of nostalgia.

Fuzz Orchestra - Uccideteli Tutti! Dio Riconoscerà I Suoi

Fuzz Orchestra - Uccideteli Tutti! Dio Riconoscerà I Suoi
(Woodworm, 2016)

"Uccideteli tutti! Dio riconoscerà i suoi".

Fuzz Orchestra - Uccideteli Tutti! Dio Riconoscerà I Suoi
(Woodworm, 2016)

"Kill them all! God will recognize his sons" (literal translation of the album title). If it is true that you cannot judge a book by its cover, it is also true that no other title could have better pinpoint the content and the atmosphere of Fuzz Orchestra fourth album. A sense of Apocalypse and fatal unavoidable "damnation" is what permeates every single note of these eight songs of the trio from Milan. Set (temporarily?) aside the social and political issues of the previous releases, now attention is focused on almost philosophical themes, or at least with an almost existentialist approach, reflecting on both the individual and the humanity in its broadest meaning. All this emerges not only from the selection of movie samples (from Todo Modo to Pasqualino Settebellezze, from Det sjunde inseglet to Dune), but also (or especially?) through music itself. The weaves of Luca Ciffo fuzz-noise guitar, combined with the visions of Fabio Ferrario noisepiano and the repeated continuous attacks of Paolo Mongardi metal-industrial drums, drag the listener into a dark vortex, in which - lost and bewildered - he lingers to look at himself through a hole, at the same time spying askew what (or rather: who) surrounds him. Essential for its capacity to amplify the imaginative power and the expressive force of Fuzz Orchestra compositions, the collaboration with the composer Enrico Gabrielli and the chamber ensemble Esecutori di Metallo su Carta. The scores and arrangements of the first, and the instrumental contribution of the seconds, not only contribute to the "soundtrack" breath of the album, but they even manage to make its sound physical. Listening to Uccideteli tutti! Dio riconoscerà i suoi you get the feeling of sitting in the darkness of a small cinema, watching an old (no more) silent movie, from which you cannot look away. To me, one of the best albums of the year.

Mutoid Man + Karl Marx was a Broker + “Operazione Intergalattica Spaziale!” + Dust Storm Warning - 13.08.2016 – MusicaW Festival (Castellina Marittima, PI)

Mutoid Man + Karl Marx was a Broker + “Operazione Intergalattica Spaziale!” + Dust Storm Warning
13.08.2016 – MusicaW Festival (Castellina Marittima, PI)

Infine Mutoid Man.

Mutoid Man + Karl Marx was a Broker + “Operazione Intergalattica Spaziale!” + Dust Storm Warning
08.13.2016 – Musica W Festival (Castellina Marittima, PI)

I return to MusicaW after some years of absence because this amazing festival (well organized, fantastic location, free entry and great bands) takes place in mid-August, exactly in those days I usually am on vacation, far away from my areas. Considered the bands playing in this edition, this year I cannot (at least partially!) miss it!

Dust Storm Warning (from Lecce) usher in the evening on the stage of the small, yet extremely fascinating, theatre in the green municipal park of Castellina Marittima. Their stoner-blues is entertaining, enhanced by powerful precise drums and by a typically hard rock warm rough voice. Maybe they need to improve something in the couple bass/guitar, but the right ingredients are all there.

“Operazione Intergalattica Spaziale!” are a trio involved in a heavy distorted funky, mixing together bouncing groove and tough stoner rock. Compact and dynamic, they have their strenght in the elastic couple bass/drums. Guitar lacks a bit of fluidity, but all in all they are an interesting discover, to be deepened.

Unlike the concert in Calenzano a few months ago, tonight Karl Marx was a Broker play with their complete lineup and the difference is truly remarkable. If they were convincing in that concert, tonight they are really exciting. Their progish math rock is powerful and compelling and it gains in fascination thanks to the space atmospheres of the melodies, to which samples and videos contribute in fundamental way. The feeling is that of being inside a metal space rock. If Porcupine Tree Anesthetize is one of your favourite songs (as it is for me!), KMWAB music is pure pleasure!

Finally Mutoid Man. I have already attended one of their concerts and so I am ready to what I will find on stage: three “crazy” guys who enjoy playing at full speed, notching up thrash metal rhythms, heavy old school band melodies and post hardcore fury. One hour show – and not just music! It seems to watch a Beavis & Butthead episode where heavy music is at the same time honored and teased, with adolescent exaltation and laughters. In addition to the songs of the two albums released to date (Helium Head and Bleeder), tonight they play also some unreleased pieces - crazy and uncontainable as the rest of their production – and the “cover” of a couple of not properly “heavy” hits (Don’t let me be Misunderstood and Purple Rain). Listen to Ben Koller after only a week from Converge gig is something amazing: super-powerful, hyper-precise, with killing groove and fantasy, he is a truly versatile drummer and (to me!) the added value in Mutoid Man. Because of the nature of its sound, Stephen Brodsky ultra-distorted guitar is a bit too devoured by Nick Cageao distorted bass: yet the final result is nonetheless a hurricane of energy, as well showed by the wild audience. There are bands with the incredible ability of entertaining you regardless of the quality of sounds or the perfect execution of songs. Mutoid Man are certainly part of this category.

Stones From the Hill - II Edition - Appaloosa + Green Oracle + The Digger's Lane + Yearnin' - 23.07.2016 - Secret Show (Pisa/Livorno)

Stones From the Hill - II Edition
Appaloosa + Green Oracle + The Digger's Lane + Yearnin'
23.07.2016 - Secret Show (fra Livorno e Pisa)

Stones From the Hill - II Edition
Appaloosa + Green Oracle + The Digger's Lane + Yearnin'
07.23.2016 - Secret Show (Pisa/Livorno)

Those ones grown up with the myth of "generator parties" (lo-fi parties that built the stoner scene of south California) well know how cool it can be a completely DIY festival: submerged in the wood, made only by enthusiasts of the genre and powered by a fuel generator. The key of this all - to make of the event an electric assault instead of a candlelight unplugged - is the generator. Exactly that generator that stopped to work in the afternoon with risk of spoiling the whole event. But the real engine of such a festival is not the generator itself: indeed, it is the passion of a bunch of people addicted to distortions. And so everything falls into place and everything is ready for the party. before it gets dark, the II chapter of Stones from the Hill begins and it does not certainly save on the power of sounds.

Yearnin' - playing at home - are the first band to turn on the amps. their blues rock - compelling and warm - is the right introduction to the evening, able to create the proper atmosphere with its "quick-setting" riffs.

The Digger's Lane (from Bergamo) slow down the groove with their alternative rock, halfway between song singer-songwriter folk and indie rock. A bit penalized by the warmth of distortions and dynamism of the first band, they are a sort of parenthesis to breathe before the sonic shock wave of the last two bands of the bill.

Perfectly absorbed the positive vibes of the wood, tonight Green Oracle play even more enthralling and fluid than in the (yet great!) concert in May, as support band before Ufomammut. The cosmic doom of the trio - unluckily deprived of the ethereal oneiric Giulia voice (tonight with the band only in the form of recordings) - is amplified in its "spiritual" effect thanks to more incisive fluidity and groove, and also through really well balanced sounds - deep and compact, able to fill any space among the trees without getting lost.

Great protagonists of this evening, Appaloosa. From the first time we saw them live (2003 or 2004) their music has been evolving towards more and more personal directions, from the hyperkinetic math rock of their beginnings to an analogic techno veined with space rock. The ultra-groovy rhythmics of bass and drums alternate obsessive trance hammer strokes and bouncing funky openings. There is a constant chase between drums and drum machine with a disruptive psychedelic effect. The outcome is at the same time stunning, alienating and englobing: being submerged in  the dark of the wood - partly interrupted only by the lights on stage - increases the feeling of fusion and immersion into the sonic wave shaped by the band from Livorno.

Few raindrops at the end of the show, but the atmosphere is so electric that covered and sheltered the amps - the party goes on and even rain decides to stop. So we just have to stay tuned and get ready for the III chapter of Stones from the Hill...two months to go!

Ufomammut + Karl Marx was a Broker + Green Oracle – 27.05.2016 – Cycle Club, Calenzano (FI)

Ufomammut + Karl Marx was a Broker + Green Oracle – 27.05.2016 – Cycle Club, Calenzano (FI)

Ufomammut + Karl Marx was a Broker + Green Oracle – 05.27.2016 – Cycle Club, Calenzano (FI)

Ufomammut come back to the Cycle after a year and half since the last time on this stage (the end of November 2014, during the Magickal Mastery Tour – a series of gigs supporting live dvd XV). Thanks to their most direct release - Ecate – they perform an even more devastating and visceral show.

The evening is opened by a newly formed trio: Green Oracle. Two songs, thirty minutes trip – through doomy sludgy sounds veined with lysergic atmospheres. The “prelude” of the second song creates a sharp cut between the first enthralling piece and the second one – the taste of a mantra, with didgeridoo, Tybetan cymbals and female voice as a special guest. The bass is the heart of the trio: the source of both the rhythmic wave and the tide of melodies. Really interesting band: we just have to wait for the recordings and release of their debut.

Sudden change in sonority when Karl Marx was a Broker get on stage – tonight the band from Pistoia plays as a duo (they are a trio, indeed) and the absence of Stefano Tocci (guitar/synth) is ironically highlighted by his picture placed on stage in his stead. Bass, drums and plenty of synth and samplers for an ultra-dynamic and super-rhythmical set moving easily amongst many different genres (prog, math rock, post hardcore…), showing really effective influences, sometimes almost “catchy” in spite of the violence of some parts. Really skillful as musicians, they only suffer from some inaccuracies of the drums – maybe due to the unusual “amputated” lineup – which, however, do not affect the impact and telluric appeal of their music.

In the end we come back to the (perfect!) pair heaviness/slowness. Tonight I listen to Ufomammut stuck to the stage. And this is the best choice ever made. In fact I find myself inside Ecate – played in almost its entirety – and I feel as I was part of this stunning songs. Sounds are great (as usual!) and the trio from Tortona is flawless (as usual!). The perfect alchemy of intensity and psychedelia is their hallmark and their concerts make it even more evident. The immediacy of their new production finds its ideal form right on stage: the sturdy massive gait of granitic riffs and the waterfall of magmatic distortions enhance the stoner/doom side of the music of the band, yet without abandoning the distinctive space/psych atmospheres. With its evocative horror-tasted synth, the final part of Daemons gets in the depths of the listener, occupying both ears and mind - in concert even more than on recordings. Each new Ufomammut concert is yet another confirmation of their great worth and continous artistic growth.

Storm{O} + Sex Pizzul + Collettivo Nimel – 20.05.2016 – No Cage (Prato)

Storm{O} + Sex Pizzul + Collettivo Nimel – 20.05.2016 – No Cage (Prato)

Storm{O} + Sex Pizzul + Collettivo Nimel – 05.20.2016 – No Cage (Prato)

Tonight No Cage offers us three really inviting and delicious dishes for those one looking for unusual tastes, yet very different from each other. The dissonant frantic after-dinner treat prepared by Storm{O} is what attracts me more than anything else.

The first course is cooked by the collective Nimel with special guests from the collective Ned (from Roma). It is an experiment of “diffused psychedelia” in which musicians constantly exchange their roles and instruments in delusional improvisations with kraut rock taste. Not only traditional rock instruments: several percussions, absurd tools of any kind, plastic pig-shaped toys, vuvuzele, sitar… Pure free form to be fully relished and to which abandon themselves. Yummy!

The second course is offered by Sex Pizzul, from Florence. A dynamic math rock with the leading engine of bass/drums, always at work arousing sharp-cornered songs towards apparently natural changes of direction (thanks to an evident indie-pop sensitivity). A tasty match of melodic keyboards and distorted bass results in a mix of dance synth pop and noisy post rock. Funny and shaking.

Thirty minutes of furious hardcore to…end “this dinner”. Storm{O} bring me back to the times of concerts at Matilda (in Viareggio) more than ten years ago (when we talk about this music as “screamo”). The burning passion of melodies not only hides into a forest of chaos: it is also oppressed by the heaviness of massive distortions (sheer pleasure for those - like me! – in love with the cathartic power of Converge and Botch assaults).  Post hardcore filled with dissonances, with continuous rhythmic changes (always at superhuman speed) constantly emphasizing the tension. After a few songs slightly engulfed by low sounds, the music of the band from Feltre opens itself up and releases sharp outbursts of frightening intensity. Sometimes you need to burn in an instant to close a circle opened more than ten years ago.

Ornaments + Zeus! – 13.06.2015 – Cycle Club, Calenzano (FI)

Ornaments + Zeus! – 13.06.2015 – Cycle Club, Calenzano (FI)

The Death of Anna Karina).

Ornaments + Zeus! – 06.13.2015 – Cycle Club, Calenzano (FI)

Ornaments are one of the best hidden secrets of Italian underground music. Cult band thanks to the omonymous self produced EP and the amazing concerts of the half 00’s, they disappeared from the scene because of the deep involvement of its members in other bands which had a more consistent critical acclaim in those years (see The Death of Anna Karina). Not having published a full-lenght until 2013, unfortunately they did not emerge from the underground. Attending their concert more than 10 years after their debut is something really strange for someone who knows and follows the band from its very beginning. In the meantime post rock and post metal universe has been changing a lot and Ornaments music has changed from revolutionary (the self titled Ep came out together with the most important albums by Isis, Pelican and Red Sparowes, and their lives were even superior to those of some of these great bands) to ordinary in its genre. Anyway, what is undeniable is that they are one of those few bands of the genre still capable to play enthralling and exciting even in 2015. Live sounds are perfectly balanced, and music has evolved towards doom, without loosing post rock nostalgic melancholy. And nostalgic melancholy – together with a sense of hope and relief - is what one feels listening to them now: because their music is well alive and not lost in time oblivion…and the recent split with Zeus! is proof of this!
After Ornaments gig, Zeus! math rock with its grind outbursts sounds funny but leaves no sign. The band is a cyclone of energy and enjoies itself in breaking extreme hardcore violence into fragments, approaching to the crazy and convoluted rhythmic of Zu and Lightning Bolt. It can be due to the lack of a consistent noise base capable to make their music more delirious and interesting or – most likely! –it can be due to the Ornaments extraordinary performance…the fact is that Zeus! do not amaze and astonish as much as they would like to. Even when the two bands exchange roles – playing the one in the style of the other – the result shows the great creative abilities of Ornaments, which proves to be of such a definitely higher level than that recognized by critics in all these years.
