Bologna Violenta – 11.01.2020 – Freakout Club (Bologna)

Bologna Violenta – 11.01.2020 – Freakout Club (Bologna)

Bologna Violenta – 01.11.2020 – Freakout Club (Bologna)

When I was a child, I felt attraction and repulsion for my parents' medical encyclopedia. Looking at those photos of physical malformations was as disturbing as magnetic. Bologna Violenta music has more or less the same effect on me. I feel dirty listening to it, but I can't help it. Especially when it tells real stories like those of the Uno Bianca. A dramatic terrible story, which has killed dozens of people (and their families) and terrified an entire country. But also a crazy, surreal and grotesque story, perversely fascinating. Listening to Nicola Manzan who entirely performs the album dedicated to that black chapter of Italian history, precisely in Bologna which was one of the main theaters of the events, is unmissable for me. On the Freakout stage, Manzan transforms the Savi brothers' machine-gun fires into cybergrind assaults. Escapes at insane speed, cars slamming on the breaks, u-turns with screeching tires, shots in the crowd and glacial executions. All this with a shooting guitar, accompanied by drum machines and samplers. Dreadful video projections tell the delusion of the three brothers. The rings of a bell for each killed person left on the road, in a pool of blood, makes the musical story even more frightening. It is when Manzan puts away the guitar for the violin that the drama and suffering of the victims, previously suggested, become explicit. The tribute that the city of Bologna pays to those carabinieri killed in January 1991 and the suicide of Savi's father (overcome by shame) are the most touching moments. Moments in which humanity reveals itself in this story of senseless violence.

Mostly extracted from Il nuovissimo mondo, the paradoxical tales of the encore relieve tension despite the music always pounds like the meat mallet of a crazy butcher and the splashes of blood always end up in my eyes, indeed, in my ears. But now we are facing a Mondo Movie, a documentary of brutality and absurdity playing between reality and (perverse) fantasy.

What will remain memorable of this concert will be a story of this city. A story told through the immense ferocity of the killers, but at the same time also through the pain of the victims, and the disgust and fear of a community devastated by the absurdity of evil.

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest – Day 2 – OvO + Bologna Violenta + Slander + Hate & Merda + BRUUNO + Mai Mai Mai – 06.08.2016 – Giavera del Montello (TV)

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest – Day 2
OvO + Bologna Violenta + Slander + Hate & Merda + BRUUNO + Mai Mai Mai

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest – Day 2
OvO + Bologna Violenta + Slander + Hate & Merda + BRUUNO + Mai Mai Mai
08.06.2016 – Giavera del Montello (TV)

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest hasn’t got a particularly bright side, yet for sure it has got a particularly dark one. This side reveals itself on the second day of festival, on Benicio’s Stage - the tiny stage dedicated to the most experimental sounds. After the storm of the previous day, the outdoor area becomes fully functional (both the main stage - the Disintegrate Arena - and the small one) thanks to the incredible work of the event organizers.

It’s 6:00 p.m. The sun is still high in the sky and Mai Mai Mai begins his performance. Hooded, the Calabrian musician creates a magma of noises, ambient sounds and electronic in decay, that with every passing minute takes the form of cosmic obsessive repetitions. Alienating and oppressive, his show is a sort of appetizer of the black energy that will be freed from the other three bands that will be playing on Benicio's Stage.

In the main arena the atmosphere is completely different. BRUUNO play a groovy – at the same time melodic – punk-hardcore, made of dissonant chords and lower full sounds. Their set is a more "funny and amused" of those characterizing the rest of the evening, with the impact of their songs slightly penalized by a bit too high volume of the voice.

On the contrary, there is no feeling of fun in the music evoked by Hate & Merda (from Florence) on Benicio's Stage. The only pleasure experienced by the hooded duo (also shared by their special guest Alessandro Vagnoni) is the sadistic raping of guitar and drums, creating a dirty, wicked and brutal sludge metal. Walls of sound in pure drone style alternate with devastating post hardcore assaults. And in the apparent chaos the two executioners control the perfect flow of continuous falls of dissonances and feedbacks. Amazing.

After the sonic perversion of this duo, Slander metal-veined hardcore (on the stage of the Disintegrate Arena) is paradoxically music to clean the ears. Powerful and mighty, in only 20 minutes they shoot straight in the face of the listener a classically hardcore fury, without disdaining a strength not far from Pantera and Down southern metal.

Another duo delights the perverse palate of the experimental angle audience: Bologna Violenta. Their passion for the blackest corners of Italian chronicles and for the most grotesque aberrant side of "à la Mondo movie" cinema manifests itself in sort of film melodies destabilized by devastating grindcore fragments. The jackhammer of Alessandro Vagnoni drums is the perfect complement to Nicola Manzan compositional madness – as well as to his orchestral conduction. With a set list focused on the latest superb album (Discordia), Bologna Violenta sonic impact is once again absolutely overwhelming and destabilizing.

Finally a huge crowd gathers in front of the Benicio’s Stage for the last duo: OvO. Their attack is more suffused and veiled than that of their devastating concert in Prato a few months ago, but no less disturbing. Stefania Pedretti gasps of voice and howls of guitar wear themselves out through the spaces built by Bruno Dorella essential rhythms. At about half concert we start to fully experience the malice and depravity of their music, through sounds and volumes tailored to them and capable of erecting the wall of sound partly lacking at the beginning of their show.

OvO are the grand finale of a day dedicated to the less orthodox and more deviant sounds of the Italian underground. Precisely for this reason their show is for us the last act of this festival. While on the main stage DSA Commando e Kaos One & DJ Craim perform their hip hop rhymes, we go into what was Converge stage the day before and now has become a “dining room”, to have a pizza and continue to enjoy the beautiful atmosphere among the participants. Indeed, in addition to the quality of the music, the great atmosphere was the secret weapon of this wonderful festival.

Bologna Violenta - Discordia

Bologna Violenta – Discordia
(Overdrive Records, Dischi Bervisti, 2016)

Bologna Violenta – Discordia
(Overdrive Records, Dischi Bervisti, 2016)

Discordia - new frontal assault by Bologna Violenta - is a point-blank barrage of gunfire. After the touching piano opening of Sigle di telefilm you immediately know that you will be swept away by a blast of fists in the face but without knowing the direction they gonna hit you. A sense of imminent drama anticipates the explosion of ultraviolence: creeping among the piano notes, tension and anxiety demonstrate how much the “human side” is prominent in this new album, though not inspired by a real crime story as the previous one (Uno Bianca). Repeatedly deflagrating grindcore fits of anger have got their backbone in symphonic melodies that seem to originate from a derailed soundtrack of the era of terrorist outrages (the Seventies in Italy, the so called "anni di piombo"). The blind fury explodes and fragments itself in few seconds as splinters of a bomb triggered by Fantômas or Naked City, always maintaining the cinematographic tension typical of Bologna Violenta music. With the extraordinary contribution of Alessandro Vagnoni at the drums, Nicola Manzan project sounds even more human (more unpredictable as well as more powerful) and loses a bit of the industrial mechanical sound making his previous albums completely surreal. Though sarcastic and deviated by a massive dose of black humor, orchestral melodies sound even more majestic than ever before. Crazy, amphetaminic, cynic and violent, Discordia is the perfect synthesis of the different souls animating this project, halfway between delusional rationality and lucid madness, macabre irony and art research.

Bologna Violenta + Cane di Gøya + Valerio Orlandini + J.D. Raudo (La Malora) – 15.04.2016 - No Cage (Prato)

Bologna Violenta + Cane di Gøya + Valerio Orlandini + J.D. Raudo (La Malora) – 15.04.2016 - No Cage (Prato)

Raudo (La Malora) – 04.15.2016 - No Cage (Prato)

Evenings at No Cage are always full of events. This evening, in particular, is really multifaceted and it starts with a book launch.

La Malora, by J.D. Raudo. Homonymous book of the homonymous (it seems a wordplay, but it tells how things really are!) debut album of the band of which he is frontman. It is the extended, complete version of the lyrics of the album, and the author talks about it in a sort of interview with himself (“question and answer youself!”). And he definetely is a good storyteller, because in the end I buy his book and I cannot wait to read it – and I will not tell you anything more because it is not fair to spoiler a book!

Then the proper musical evening. Its leit motiv is the perfect marriage of music and videos, with a vein of anguish/distress/disturbance slithering through the three projects with different declinations.

First of all the whole electronic – and eponymous – project of Valerio Orlandini. Obsessive, repetitive rhythmics, tv programmes audio extracts, sentences well articulated and altered on the microphone, oneiric-alienating soundscapes, cyclic videos on the sheet obscuring the stage – an empty stage, because Valerio Orlandini plays off the stage, right next to the sheet. Halfway between industrial and a gloomy dark ambient, with a bit apocalyptic connotations, his show excites my curiosity and leaves me a desire of getting deeper into it.

The sheet remains there. But this time the band – three elements – is beyond it, still off the stage. Their silhouettes-shadows appear only at times, mixing together with a selection of movies outtakes and images, especially from Antichrist, by Lars Von Trier. Cane di Gøya immediately catch me, because their post-core/post-rock brings me back of more than a decade, and I find in them the power and beauty of Ornaments and Vanessa Van Basten, yet enriched by synths and filtered through the music born in these last ten years. New – brand new – project. I hope I am going to hear again about them, as well as I hope that an EP or an album in in the works.

Dulcis in fundo – even if it is not so appropriate to talk about “sweetness” - Bologna Violenta. No more one man band, yet super-powerful and fierce duo, placed tête-à-tête with drummer Alessandro Vagnoni, Nicola Manzan opens his devastating set with the just released Discordia, then followed by songs of his other albums, especially Uno Bianca and Il Nuovissimo Mondo. The furious musical tale – blending together grind, hardcore, orchestral music and “à la Fantomas” deliria – is enhanced by (violently hallucinating) videos on the background of the stage. The effect is annihilating and stunning: you lose your external reference points and you are catched in a vortex of sounds and images, saturating the stage, the audience, the whole venue.  Music apart (because in one case we are in front of a paralizing immobility, in the other one we are knockout by an unrestrained hyper-kinetism), it comes to my mind Sunn O))) concert at La Flog (Firenze) in 2006, when Stephen O’Malley & friends, enriched by the almost shamanic presence of Xasthur, made me feel a sense of void and vertigo. By the way, talking of “concert” is reductive. This is an audio-visual and sensorial experience, through which Manzan’s cleverness and eclecticism lead the audience to look into an abyss which is at the same time dangerously magnetizing and repulsing. What fascinates on records catches and possesses in the live show. To be repeated.
[E.R.]
