Waste of Space Orchestra – Syntheosis

Waste of Space Orchestra – Syntheosis
(Svart Records, 2019)

Waste of Space Orchestra – Syntheosis
(Svart Records, 2019)

Roadburn is a religion, 013 is its church. In this temple of black psychedelia, on April 19, 2018 ten Finnish musicians were the ministers of a liturgy. Like all the others present, I too was unaware of what would have resulted from the collaboration between Oranssi Pazuzu and Dark Buddha Rising, specifically designed for this festival. I sat down in religious silence, I opened my mind and I made sure that the cosmic music of the ten entered inside it, to manipulate it to its liking. The experience I was part of cannot be reproduced simply listening to that music on record. But Syntheosis could not help but see the light. Even though, like an image reflected in a corridor of mirrors, the energy released by the ten was multiplied by the community present that evening in that music hall, the solitary listening is a theotic process to which anyone who is not afraid of his own transformation should submit. The metamorphosis induced by the sound vortex is tangible. Swaying melodies beyond the boundaries of dissonance, as well as cosmic storms alternating with moments of atmospheric calm, open the doors of perception and make the boundaries between ego and non-ego increasingly blurred. At the end of the ceremony nothing will be the same.

Roadburn Festival 2017 – Day 3

Roadburn Festival 2017 – Day 3
[My Dying Bride + Ahab + Wear Your Wounds + Oranssi Pazuzu + The Bug Vs Dylan Carlson]

Abbiamo alte, anzi altissime, aspettative. Tutte saranno pienamente ripagate.

Oggi riescono a superarsi. Indimenticabile.

Roadburn Festival 2017 – Day 3
[My Dying Bride + Ahab + Wear Your Wounds + Oranssi Pazuzu + The Bug Vs Dylan Carlson]

We start our third day of Roadburn flooded by The Bug Vs Dylan Carlson drones, which makes our stomach, ears and hair vibrate from the early afternoon. The low frequencies of The Bug electronics are interwoven with those of the Earth leader guitar, which sometimes unleashes slow-moving arpeggios beyond the boundaries known by slowcore. When electronics abandons the walls of sound in favor of hypnotic trip hop rhythms where guitar feedbacks and larsen effects insert, the result is truly astonishing. The (all in all not so numerous) audience is annihilated by dronical and atmospheric flooding and is silent in front of this strange vibration experience as well. A religious silence surrounds the room. Silence observed during every concert of the festival and which amazes those who, like us, are used to a usuallly loud and a bit annoying audience. Further confirmation that we are at an unusual festival.

As the latest distortions disappear, our eardrums would need some rest from the wall of sound that made them a bit stunned, but there is no time to take breath. On Main Stage are going to play Oranssi Pazuzu and we are forced not to abandon the venue (considering their last year sold out at Het Patronaat). As expected, indeed, the 013 gets packed beyond belief. We have high, indeed very high, expectations. All of them will be totally fullfilled. The 3000 sharing the concert with us are on a spaceship drifting into the deep space. Oranssi Pazuzu music is a cosmic storm crashing with the freexing ferocity of Northern European black metal, but according to routes imposed by a captain of vessel under LSD effect. Sounds reverberate in the hall with deep echoes, while heavy distortions are deformed by flanger pushed to the maximum. it seems that Hawkwind have been lost in an ice forest in acid. Live, their music accentuates its extremes, playing more violent and fierce than on album, but also more psych and noisy. A unique experience.

We go back to daylight, in the midst of the crowd of enthusiasts from all over Europe, before entering the Het Patronaat to attend Wear Your Wounds gig, a parallel project by Jacob Bannon (Converge). Despite being their first concert ever - and despite Bannon being a relevant name for Roadburn audience - against every expectation the venue is far from full. His post rock shows the most romantic side of Bannon - playing the bass as well as singing also with clean vocals. Compared to the album, in which the music plays very melodic and atmospheric, the band adds a load of distortion and power, emphasizing even more the passionate nature of the songs. It is a pity that the WYW concert attracts not so many people, because their music is emotionally truly engaging, though related to its genre.

Wear Your Wounds show ends 10 minutes ahead of schedule, and this allows us to catapult into the Green Room to attend the full performance of The Call of the Wretched Sea, Ahab debut album. Just a few minutes from the beginning the venue is already completely packed, and as sardines in a tin we listened to the first track along the short corridor giving access to the hall. Then flow of people lets us in and we find ourselves in the first rows, where we are overwhelmed by a wave of abysmal doom, coming directly from the Mariana Trench. Ocean waves of distortion knock down like a tsunami and Droste deep growl evokes monsters from the darkness, while Cornelius Althammer drum makes agitating, unpredictable and dragging a music in itself based on exhausting slowness and the most oppressive heaviness. Also thanks to melodies, far more airy and stratified than a superficial listening could let infer. Their concert (which unfortunately we have to abandon during the last song to be able to enjoy My Dying Bride on Main Stage) is one of the greatest moment of this day, and surpasses their already extraordinary live last November in Italy.

My Dying Bride music must be lived live. Whoever attended one of their concert knows it. As far as they can be engaging on album, the live dimension is able to make you definitively fall in love with them. In 2012, in Florence, we were speechless in front of their majestic and mighty sound. Today they manage to outdo themselves. A concert based on the integral performance of Turn Loose the Swans (except for Black God because they "failed to find the right female voice") plus 3 classic songs from the early albums, and all 013 melts in front of the perfect beauty of the doom opera of one of the greatest bands of the genre, which really proves not to feel the weight of its years. Aaron Stainthorpe is uncontrollable, the perfect actor of the suffering sung by the theatrical music of his band. A band that is a perfect mechanism able to move from the deepest black to all twilight shades, from a monstrous heavy riff to a touching violin phrasing. One of the most intense concerts of the whole festival. Unforgettable.

Oranssi Pazuzu – Värähtelijä

Oranssi Pazuzu – Värähtelijä
(Svart Records, 2016)

Capolavoro.

Oranssi Pazuzu – Värähtelijä
(Svart Records, 2016)

Throwing ourselves into the chaos of Värähtelijä means to drop any rational compass into the abyss, to lose every sort of orientation and to face our own inner space. Oranssi Pazuzu invite us to take such a demanding and scary journey, in search of those dark corners dwelling inside ourselves, and that only in dreams (and nightmares) manifest themselves. The ship we use to take this Odyssey is a music that was born in the Finnish forests, and it transmits their cold and misanthropic black metal wind, but then it quickly sails the deepest space with the desire to explore the unknown in the same way of 70s German cosmic couriers. With their fourth album Oranssi Pazuzu make the most experimental black metal (Xasthur or Blut Aus Nord) dissonant arpeggios, screams and acid melodies float in a psychedelic storm. Panting sonic waves swallow the songs with a sensibility close to the most noisy shoegaze (also thanks to Julius Mauranen production) and they help to make without exit the labyrinth in which we find ourselves. Hypnotized by obsessive rhythms and constant echoes, without knowing how we did get to this point, we find ourselves beyond known boundaries. Oranssi Pazuzu led us in a non-place where the perfect resonance of the different components requires courage and desire to research to be perceived. And this is true whether you consider the deepest ego and its relationship with the universe, whether you simply consider musical aspects. Masterpiece.
