Paradise Lost + Pallbearer + Sinistro - 28.10.2017 - Phenomenon (Fontaneto d'Agogna, NO)

Paradise Lost + Pallbearer + Sinistro - 28.10.2017 - Phenomenon (Fontaneto d'Agogna, NO)

Paradise Lost + Pallbearer + Sinistro - 10.28.2017 - Phenomenon (Fontaneto d'Agogna, NO)

I travel to the (at least for me!) isolated Novara countryside for the only Italian tour date of one of the fundamental doom bands of the '90s - and not only! - supported by two bands that, with their different peculiarities, represent the new entities and new guidelines of this genre.

First on stage the Portuguese Sinistro. A great, exciting, revelation. Captained by Patricia Andrade, voice and acting, the Lisbon band captures and catalyses the audience. Doom melodies, with darkwave tones and Fado suggestions, take physical shape thanks to the incredible voice and interpretation of the irrepressible front-woman. If every drum shot, as well as any guitar riff, is powerful and penetrating, likewise (and perhaps even more) are the vocal lines of the histrionic singer, releasing all the expressive spectrum of her voice through multiple paths. For those who do not know them, a first encounter under the stage could be the classic love at first sight!

Second time in six months for Pallbearer, to confirm them as a great band, even live. So it was! The four of Little Rock enchant me also this time. Brett Campbell's voice sounds powerful and essentially perfect in its particular timbre, and climbs on ever higher tones, without the slightest of vertigo. Also outstanding are Holt and Rowland's choirs and counter melodies: rare in today's bands, especially live. The setlist is varied, and it focuses little on the new - beautiful - Heartless. It seems structured to emphasize the emotional and almost "epic" wave that their riffs are able to elicit in the listener through a doom that is not flattened on the clichés of the genre, but which on the contrary feeds and enriches itself with almost prog hints, with openings of almost dreamlike atmospheres. A band you should be looking for live shows and a band you should check out for the following albums.

And finally, the long-awaited Paradise Lost. So much for the band itself and because they were (up to this concert!) among those bands that for one reason or another I never managed to see live. I was sure it was a lack to fix as soon as possible. Now I'm sure. With 15 studio albums and a thirty-year-long career, Paradise Lost are one of the pillars of Doom, especially the one with Death and Gothic connotations. But the band from Halifax is not just an icon of the recent history: the quintet headed by Nick Holmes is alive and kicking and perfectly harmonizes its past and present. The newly released Medusa and its direct forerunner The Plague Within occupy half of the incredible setlist, and they stand out for their power, groove, and a singing which is more aggressive, scratching and on lower tones. Next to them a selection from almost all of their career (with the only exception of the first two albums, Lost Paradise and Gothic), which shines for its tragic and crystalline beauty, and for Holmes' dramatic and almost recitative singing. It is not easy to continue to be up-to-date after 3 decades, and it is even harder to be able to bring together live the various evolutions of 3 decades of music. Paradise Lost have succeeded in this task.

Pallbearer - Heartless

Pallbearer - Heartless
(Profound Lore Records, Nuclear Blast, 2017)

Pallbearer - Heartless
(Profound Lore Records, Nuclear Blast, 2017)

The ritual of waiting. Like when a thunderstorm is approaching. Black clouds swelling, travelling in a moment the space between the horizon and our heads. Smell of moisture in the air, wind suddenly blowing. Electricity. This is Heartless. Not a violent storm like the previous Foundations of Burden, yet a gloomy and vaguely disturbing quiet, with the ghost of the squall costantly nearer. The mastodontic riffs of the previous album, which had made it one of the best metal records in recent years, are fragmented here, dilated and reworked along melodic tracks closer to progressive metal than to the doom of the past. The phrasings and interweavings of the two guitars (always a trademark of the band from Arkansas) are the real load-bearing architecture on which the seven - imposing - songs are built and on which Brett Campbell voice climbs towards ever higher tones and increasingly epic and impressive melodies. The fevering waiting that has anticipated the third release of the band will find vent for old fans in this album based on the sense of wait and preferring to flow among enveloping atmospheres (the dreamlike introduction of Dancing in Madness) rather than deflagrate in blows of great impact and power? For an underground environment that recently has rarely been exalted as much as listening to the first two records of the band, it will not be easy to feel rewarded by this transformation, which has led to the complete abandonment of post metal aftertaste in favour of a melodic sensitivity alike that one of Queensrÿche in the late 80s. Wait and absence of frenzy: this is what a monumental album like Heartless needs to be absorbed. The maturity of the melodies of I Saw the End, Thorns and Heartless are the best demonstration of the titanic personality of Pallbearer, a band out of the predetermined genres, which is confirmed as one of the most capable in combining classic and modern.

Roadburn Festival 2017 – Day 4

Roadburn Festival 2017 – Day 4
[Inter Arma + Come to Grief + Ulver + Gong + Pallbearer]

Ultimo giorno, purtroppo.

I'm Dead!

The Assassination of Julius Caesar. Rimandati a settembre.

Conserviamole e valorizziamole come fossero patrimonio dell'umanità. Ne abbiamo bisogno.

Roadburn Festival – Day 4
[Inter Arma + Come to Grief + Ulver + Gong + Pallbearer]

Last day, sadly. The Dutch grey sky and an audience less numerous than the previous days (this is the only day not gone sold out) instill the afterparty atmosphere. We also start our day a bit more relaxed, spending some more time in Tilburg pubs.

First gig of the day only at 4:30 p.m. But what a band! Pallbearer. For those who think that everything has been said in heavy music. For those who consider doom a dead genre. The four from Arkanans banged us with giant, powerful and massive riffs, but they also play fascinating melodies, of epic melancholy and vibrant emotional tensions, without losing groove, energy and impact. A band capable of conceiving great songs (in the most classic sense of the term) and a singer with a truly personal timbre (a timbre that, coupled with the use of a high range and slightly dissonant/estranging melodies, could suffer in the live performance, but it is absolutely not the case!). To listen to them we excluded Aaron Turner's Sumac concert, going on at the same time at Het Patronaat. The plenty of choice offered by the festival imposes painful decisions. But we will not regret it. Listening to Worlds Apart live let everyone realize the value of this band. A song that stands out among the best ones we listened to during this festival. And we have to say that also the new songs from the latest Heartless sound good at first listening. But Worlds Apart remains a separate song. And we do not just think about us. But also for the whole audience today at 013. Memorable.

We enter the Het Patronaat abundantly in advance so that we do not miss a minute of Gong - or at least of their new incarnation. More than a band, Gong have always been a freak community, open and fluid both in the musical style and in the names of the artists involved. However a community with a precise spiritual master for most of its existence: Daevid Allen. In 2015, shortly before his death, Allen invited the members of the latest line up to keep going on with the same exploratory joyful spirit of his music. As widely demonstrated on stage, current Gong are an "appendix" to the crazy journeys undertaken in nearly 50 years of existence and not business of bad taste. With a concert focused on their latest album (the wonderful Rejoice! I'm Dead! - obviously dedicated to Allen) they keep alive the free dreamer spirit of the legendary band that, more than anything else, has marked the story of progressive space rock. All this without a minimum of nostalgia. We are right in front of the stage and we are flooded with wonderful progressive psychedelia! Delirious rhythms, spiral hypnotic riffs à la King Crimson, crazy wind instruments phrasings and psychedelic guitar melodies, alternating with cosmic contemplations. The voice, the guitar and the scenic presence of Kavus Torabi (we had the pleasure of listening to his Guapo last year at Desertfest London) are the most extraordinary we could expect. The Gong planet honours its guru having fun and entertaining the audience, just as he would have liked to do. Without fishing from the mythical past, but throwing itself headlong in a phantasmagoric present! We leave Het Patronaat with a great smile on our faces and a huge amount of positive energy!

Literally impossible to get away from the Gong stage in advance. And so we lose the first 10 minutes of Ulver concert. We enter the 013 Main Stage while the Norwegians are already presenting (and for the first time live) the brand new The Assassination of Julius Caesar. The hall is completely dark, illumined only by the spectacular games of light coming from the stage. Having already attended 4 of their concerts and having followed them in all of their continuous metamorphoses, we know that all their live shows (as well as any of their records) do separate story. The nth moult of the wolves have created a band dedicated to a melodic electronic "darkwave" (Depeche Mode School). The spotlights are on Garm voice, standing out - beautiful - in an ocean of synthetic, crystalline and perfectly calibrated sounds (once again 013 confirms its extraordinary acoustics). Songs, though, are what leave us puzzled. The synth-pop turn is clinging to instant melodic lines, but not as engaging as those of Dave Gahan band to which they are clearly inspired. And instrumental parts are devoid of that atmosphere and imagination that made Ulver one of the bravest and most fascinating bands of alternative music in recent times. Every Ulver metamorphosis surprises us. This latter left us many question marks in the head. Passed, but not with full marks. Waiting to understand their new direction.

Since we want at all costs to close our Roadburn with Inter Arma concert, we go to Het Patronaat while the previous band is still play. In the half-hour we listened to them, Come to Grief show that they are rotten and putrid to the marrow. The historical band (Grief) recently reunited with the name of an old album released before the dissolution, is politically incorrect and disturbing as those that used to play in the 90s (see Eyehategod). Dissonances and feedback raise the level of acidity of their music, which is full in rotteness and fierce power. So "nauseating" to exalt us!

Our Roadburn ends here where it started. Het Patronaat. Here play Inter Arma. In one hour, we completely burn our remaining energies, with a devastating concert, perhaps the most powerful of these days. Monstrously heavy and pissed off, they play a modern metal sludge, deeply contaminated with extreme metal. An uncontrollable landslide of mastodontic bumps under which we remain crushed, for our total joy. The whole thing seamlessly, without a single moment to take breath, and without the slightest fall. A colossus (both physically and musically) on the drums and a killing singer capable of obscuring many of his colleagues singing in metal bands, even as he himself comes from that school. The sensation is to be swept away by a fury and inhuman raw violence, which at times, however, turn into arousing progressive openings, with unexpected melodic sensitivity. In a flash it is already over. And we remain silent, in the midst of an old church now trasformed in concert hall, among hundreds of plastic glasses on the floor, with the feeling of having attended to something really great. Like Sepultura in the Beneath the Remains or Arise tour, or Neurosis at the time of Through Silver in Blood. If everything is going to end (and Roadburn is no exception), this is the most perfect way to end this festival.

Four days of music that opens the brain and keeps the muscles awake. Four days spent in the relaxed atmosphere that only real fans can create. Four days in which audience and artists often exchange their roles. Art exhibitions, meetings with musicians, Southern Lord distro selling cds for 3 euro (!!!) and the freedom to "create your own festival" choosing from an incredible list of bands. It's hard to get back to reality. But at least we know there are happy islands where we can take shelter. Let's preserve and value them as if they were heritage of the humanity. We need it.
