Paradise Lost – Obsidian

Paradise Lost – Obsidian
(Nuclear Blast, 2020)

Paradise Lost – Obsidian
(Nuclear Blast, 2020)

Each town has a safe inn, open til late at the night. A shelter we can count on in those nights when  outside the storm is raging. Paradise Lost is that place, in the universe of heavy metal. When outside there are only silence and desolation, and we no longer recognize our fellowmen, the English band shows us the entrance through an arpeggio with an ancient flavour. In a moment we are in another world, in another era. A tavern in Winterfell, in the far north of Westeros. Inside it there isn't the tired resignation of a place corroded by habit, yet the passionate warmth of a hideout of partisans planning battles. Here we find familiar faces, old friends who do not want to give up, and who show inexhaustible energy, result of successful alchemy. So, while a pandemic freezes the world of music, not only annihilating concerts, but also inhibiting the release of records (which, in this digital age, do not bring any profit to the bands if they don't go on tour), Paradise Lost go fearlessly against this trend and release one of their best records. Combining darkwave romanticism and heavy metal power, thanks also to the precious contribution of the young drummer Waltteri Väyrynen, Paradise Lost compose their most epic and grandiose album, without ever losing the introspective focus that has always characterized them. The inn's light is on, amidst the blizzard. It is up to us to come in and join the resistance.

Kadavar – For the Dead Travel Fast

Kadavar – For the Dead Travel Fast
(Nuclear Blast, 2019)

Kadavar – For the Dead Travel Fast
(Nuclear Blast, 2019)

"On the edge of a terrifying precipice ... with a deep rift in which there is an abyss [with] silver threads, where rivers wind their way through deep gorges." Here, where wild nature prevails over human rationality, there is the castle which inspired Bram Stoker for the set of the story of his bloodthirsty count. And precisely that castle, looming disturbingly on the cover of Kadavar fifth album, is the place where the music of the German band manifests itself. Within those walls, and in the minds of those who live there, a dense fog hovers and demons dance. By distorting perception like never before, Kadavar create their own vision of the dark sound that in recent years has fascinated many bands dedicated to the rediscovery of 70s rock. But unlike others who had taken this path before them, Kadavar's journey to the dark side is not an orgy black mass of prog matrix or a frightening descent into the doom catacombs, yet a psychedelic spiral that enters the mind of the evil. A mind thirsty for lust, but at the same time romantic, imprisoned in the darkest corners of the night. Beyond the fog that expands time, beyond the last door that is at the bottom of the longest of the corridors, Kadavar still hide their rock heart, characterized by epic melodies and enthralling riffs, which at times are colored with sepulchral doom. But what makes For the Dead Travel Fast a unique album, and not only in the discography of the Berlin trio, is that sense of mystery, restlessness and melancholy that is felt trying to observe what is hidden beyond the night.

Behemoth - I Loved You at Your Darkest

Behemoth – I Loved You at Your Darkest
(Nuclear Blast, 2018)

We Are the Next 1000 Years).

Behemoth – I Loved You at Your Darkest
(Nuclear Blast, 2018)

Poland is one of the bastions of the Catholic religion, which in this nation has a very high specific weight from both a social and a political point of view. There could be no more fertile ground than this for the birth and development of Behemoth, one of the most explicit bands in expressing their reaction to the power of the Church. To do this, their leader (Adam Michał "Nergal" Darski) has used the same weapons as his "enemy", namely a constantly and growing attempt to evangelize his audience. The boundary between Heaven and Hell is so evanescent in the band's music, and often the two antithetical kingdoms overlap. Listening to the latest album, I Loved You at Your Darkest, you can realize that theirs is the proposal of an alternative spirituality, and not a simple fight against the Christian one. Theatrical and full of pathos both in the most violent outbursts and in the most disturbing dissonances, Behemoth music is a liturgy that seems to cross the darkness in search of light. In the children's chorus introducing the album (sort of Another Brick in the Wall in metal key) we are faced with white voices that spit deep black. A black into which Nergal invites us to enter, to attend a religious ceremony that will prove to be a real spiritual journey. We will be baptized in the muddy water, and then we will face the abysses of the stormy black metal (Wolves ov Siberia) and the mysterious places of the gothic metal (Bartzabel), until the crucifixion of the idols and the awareness of our freedom (We Are the Next 1000 Years). Catholic iconography and liturgy are overturned in a grand ceremony, full of choruses and complex arrangements, at the end of which one can only be a believer or an atheist. There is no middle way.

Graveyard - Peace

Graveyard - Peace
(Nuclear Blast, 2018)

It ain't over yet!

Graveyard - Peace
(Nuclear Blast, 2018)

It ain't over yet! Graveyards shoot this sentence bluntly. With the pride and thirst for revenge of those who reappear out of that cemetery in which they seemed to have been buried, to face those who gave them as passed off. A resurrection that takes the form of a passionate record, in which the delicate warmth of the blues of the past is relegated to single episodes (See the Day and Bird of Paradise, sung by bassist Truls Mörck), in favor of a burning hard rock. Impetuous music that is conveyed in a linear and immediate form. Peace does not have the flexibility and elasticity of the past (even for the different style of the new drummer - Oskar Bergenheim - compared to that of his predecessor - Axel Sjöberg), but it is a compact album in which basses are pumped with the sensitivity of a stoner band. This does not mean that the creativity of the Swedish band has disappeared, but rather that this dwells now among massive riffs and explodes in beautiful melodies and in the fire of of Joakim Nilsson's vocal chords (Cold Love). After their disbandment in 2016, the extraordinary return to life of Graveyard is the proof that - despite announced finals and continuous mournings - rock has got nine lives like cats and is capable of surprising rebirths.

Earthless - Black Heaven

Earthless - Black Heaven
(Nuclear Blast, 2018)

Earthless - Black Heaven
(Nuclear Blast, 2018)

A record store that becomes a point of reference for all those who feel out of context and out of fashion. This place, where musicians and listeners meet and exchange ideas, is the first nucleus of that scene that in a few years made San Diego the "new dawn" of hard psychedelic rebirth. The two store managers (Mario Rubalcaba and Mike Eginton), along with a talented guitarist (Isaiah Mitchell), bring to music their passion for improvised, imaginative, explosive rock with no limitations, under the name Earthless. After bringing rock back to its raw visceral essence, through long dilated, sinuous and lysergic ramblings, inspiring an entire generation of Californian musicians, Earthless return to Earth with Black Heaven. Songs lose that cosmic dust that made the contours of the past records unpredictable, playing now compact and direct (less Guru Guru and more Led Zeppelin). The trajectory followed by the spacecraft is more direct and linear than in the past, although the cosmic rays of the guitar and the solar explosions of the rhythmic section constantly deform the route. An intermediate stop at Rancho de la Luna to breathe the air of the terrestrial desert and fill up with heavy blues and then the trio leaves again at full speed (and all groove). But what really changed the way the trio travels is the presence of a human being driving the spaceship. Isaiah Mitchell's beautiful nasal voice is the secret Earthless hid in the cosmic abysses (and that in the past they only rarely showed). Bringing this captain back to our planet means going back to that record store, in a specific place on planet Earth, from which it all began. A return journey that has the strength and inspiration of those who have glimpsed a different world off the bastions of Orion, and tell it to friends, still intent on taking off.

Mantar – Ode to the Flame

Mantar – Ode to the Flame
(Nuclear Blast, 2016)

Mantar – Ode to the Flame
(Nuclear Blast, 2016)

Guitar and drums, face to face in a challenge to the death. Eyes fixed on the rival, like a western duel. Noisy feedback is the trick used by the guitarist to increase tension before everything explodes. The wait ends when his opponent on the drums attacks. In a moment we are overwhelmed by a burst of riffs, the wait is over. We find ourselves in the middle of a battle in which liters and liters of sweat will be poured, many strings will break and drum sticks will fly in the air. No prisoners will be taken. A frontal assault characterized by the propulsive thrust of groove and the destructive force of noise. It is at the moment of detonation that we realize that the two armies are not opposed, yet allied with each other, and we are the enemy. The assault on the listener is direct like a fist in the face. Punk in the soul, heavy metal in the body. Primitive, bestial. Like the attack of a cavalry thirsty for the blood of the enemies, with horses shoed by a certain Lemmy, and with irons forged by Venom. Even when the pace slows, the blows do not lose strength and they are dripping with blood and earth, as if they came from New Orleans sludge scene. Typically Germans, the two fighters (Hanno and Enric) proceed with that martial gait which is much more methodical (almost industrial) than the rough fury of their second record would presage at first listening. Savage and furious (at the same time old school and post) heavy metal, yet also funny. To be faced headlong.

Paradise Lost - Medusa

Paradise Lost - Medusa
(Nuclear Blast, 2017)

Pietrificati.

Paradise Lost - Medusa
(Nuclear Blast, 2017)

Petrified. Medusa's paralyzing gaze becomes flesh in the heavy oppressive riffs of Paradise Lost fifteenth album, and immobilises us with slow rhythms and mastodontic distortions. A magnetic and nihilistic look lettings us face the depressing reality of a meaningless universe. True to his romantic ideals, the band from Halifax struggles not to cross the Gorgon's gaze (sometimes relying on ancient pagan gods, sometimes through a dogged tension towards the absolute), but the attempt is destined to fail (after all, it is a band faithful to its doom ideals). Greg Mackintosh & co put into music this titanic clash between cosmic impotence and desire for deliverance through the irrational with the most extreme album they ever conceived, a return to the death/doom metal origins where distressing exhaustion and overwhelming power coexist. On the one hand, burial atmospheres, overwhelming riffs, melancholy phrasings and growl coming from the afterworls, on the other a immense vital energy. After the rebirth, through The Plague Within (2015), Paradise Lost close a circle, returning to the atmosphere of the early 90s, yet with a strenght and passion that are sons of the present.

Kadavar – Rough Times

Kadavar – Rough Times
(Nuclear Blast, 2017)

Kadavar – Rough Times
(Nuclear Blast, 2017)

If you think of today's rock as the corpse of what it was, this German band is one of the few that can recover it and make it dance to the rhythm of the early 70s. Kadavar spell, able to recompose the musical material in decomposition and to give it life again through beautiful engaging songs, keeps happening once again. The German trio transmits an energy to its musical creature, which few others in this era of classic hard rock revival can claim. An energy that this time manifests itself through physical force (powerful riffs, lowered tuning, on stoner rock borders) as well as through agility (elastic groove in perpetual motion) and what I could call "psychic force" (psychedelic melodies dilating and deforming songs). Exactly this "mental" component is the most peculiar feature of Rough Times, what differentiates it from the three previous albums. The linear fluid structure of the songs is the same that made Berlin songs real jewels. But in this album there are developments refracting the melodic light according to the trajectories of The Beatles in the second part of their career (the raw mighty cover of Helter Skelter as bonus track is not a mere coincidence). If to make dance the corpse of rock music, in the past the three Germans had been possessed by Led Zeppelin spirit (sometimes floating above their first two records), now Kadavar personality is so strong that any new spirit possessions can only increase it.

Pallbearer - Heartless

Pallbearer - Heartless
(Profound Lore Records, Nuclear Blast, 2017)

Pallbearer - Heartless
(Profound Lore Records, Nuclear Blast, 2017)

The ritual of waiting. Like when a thunderstorm is approaching. Black clouds swelling, travelling in a moment the space between the horizon and our heads. Smell of moisture in the air, wind suddenly blowing. Electricity. This is Heartless. Not a violent storm like the previous Foundations of Burden, yet a gloomy and vaguely disturbing quiet, with the ghost of the squall costantly nearer. The mastodontic riffs of the previous album, which had made it one of the best metal records in recent years, are fragmented here, dilated and reworked along melodic tracks closer to progressive metal than to the doom of the past. The phrasings and interweavings of the two guitars (always a trademark of the band from Arkansas) are the real load-bearing architecture on which the seven - imposing - songs are built and on which Brett Campbell voice climbs towards ever higher tones and increasingly epic and impressive melodies. The fevering waiting that has anticipated the third release of the band will find vent for old fans in this album based on the sense of wait and preferring to flow among enveloping atmospheres (the dreamlike introduction of Dancing in Madness) rather than deflagrate in blows of great impact and power? For an underground environment that recently has rarely been exalted as much as listening to the first two records of the band, it will not be easy to feel rewarded by this transformation, which has led to the complete abandonment of post metal aftertaste in favour of a melodic sensitivity alike that one of Queensrÿche in the late 80s. Wait and absence of frenzy: this is what a monumental album like Heartless needs to be absorbed. The maturity of the melodies of I Saw the End, Thorns and Heartless are the best demonstration of the titanic personality of Pallbearer, a band out of the predetermined genres, which is confirmed as one of the most capable in combining classic and modern.

Blues Pills - Lady in Gold

Blues Pills - Lady in Gold
(Nuclear Blast, 2016)

Blues Pills - Lady in Gold
(Nuclear Blast, 2016)

Never as in recent years the role of women had been so central in the rock world. Dethroned the male colleagues from the center of the stage, they have become the main actresses of the rebirth of "classic" rock currently underway. One of the most charismatic queens of this new wave is the Swedish Elin Larsson, whose voice guides the music of the Blues Pills. Lady in Gold (second album of the band) develops along the sinuous melodies of Larsson vocal chords, which have the power and depth usually associated with an African American black singer rather than to a Swedish blonde. Add Larsson bright sensitivity and vital energy to this evident soul music component - perfectly inserted in the blues/hard rock matrix of the band - and it will be immediately clear how much Blues Pills detach from the swarm of retro rock band captained by women, too often linked to the shadowy and mysterious side of seventies hard rock and little inclined to play with light and shade. Precisely the ambiguous mixture of light and darkness, indeed, makes Lady in Gold an incredibly fascinating album. Our Lady of light, rise to power!

Kadavar - Berlin

Kadavar – Berlin
(Nuclear Blast, 2015)

Kadavar – Berlin
(Nuclear Blast, 2015)

Power trio – as implicit in its definition – is synonymous of energy and strenght. Berlin power trio Kadavar is no exception. And Berlin – their third full length – is the quintessence of power and groove. Pure rock’n’roll, the 11 tracks of the album have got deep roots in the 70s, and at the same time they drew the sap out of the more easy-listening sound of the 80s and the stoner heaviness of the 90s. Yet Berlin is no derivative album at all! Starting with the fuzzy Lord of the Sky, going through some super-groovy songs - Last Living Dinosaur and Stolen Dream – and some bluesy pearls – Pale Blue Eyes and The Old Man – to culminate with the almost maidenish Into the Night, the latest work of the Teutonic trio is an album with a distinct personality and it does not sound as a revival of catchy sounds and highly successful trends. Their hard rock feeds on desert sand, it launches itself at full speed on the asphalt of long, solitary American roads, it bathes in rivers of beer and it winks to beautiful girls: there is a great vitality and desire to have fun. Christoph “Lupus” Lindemann – guitar and voice - e Christoph “Tiger” Bartelt – drums – found in their new bassist Simon "Dragon" Bouteloup the piece they lost when Philipp "Mammut" Lippitz bailed out in 2010: a bass which is at the same time almost a second guitar and a remarkable rhythmic counterpart. Nico’s Reich der Träume as a bonus track is the right, sophisticated choice to close in a dark, psychedelic way an album that leaves really little space to these occult atmospheres, being all focused on the immediacy and energy unleashed by the magic formula of a berlin power trio which seems to come out of California.
