Nebula - 03.10.2019 - The Cage (Livorno)

Nebula - 03.10.2019 - The Cage (Livorno)

Nebula - 10.03.2019 - The Cage (Livorno)

To tell this story I begin from the end. One of those sad endings that American cinema would never have the courage to stage. After a one hour concert, Nebula return on stage mildly acclaimed by the few present and prepare themselves for the encore in a venue whose large empty spaces recall the American deserts of western movies. Eddie Glass takes his guitar, outlines a riff, but something doesn't work. He tries to understand why his amp doesn't sound like it should, he asks for help, but he gets no answer. From the depths of the Cage nobody - absolutely nobody - moves. Neither the sound engineer, nor members of the staff of the venue. Nobody. Confused, Glass wanders on stage. In a surreal silence he still asks for someone to come and give him a hand. It's like feeling vultures flying over Nebula carcass in this desert. Glass and his fellows surrender. There will be no final duel in western style. Noone comes to their rescue. The desert swallows them up and makes them disappear in general silence.

But how did this story begin? Slowly, like a relaxed ride among cacti. With unexpected slowness Nebula started their concert, jamming, letting themselves go into a natural crescendo. During the first few minutes the band had to autofocus. Then they galloped off into the sandy deserts of their stoner rock, to reach that launching tower hidden in the canyon, from which to reach the stars. The trajectory of the cosmic journey was not linear. Nor constant was the speed. Propulsive riffs pushed the spaceship to supersonic speed, but often they fragmented themselves into a dust of solos. A nebula of gas and psychedelic dust in which it is difficult to be orientes. Actually, I'd say it's wrong to look for a direction. Because Eddie Glass (now the only historical member of the band, after the departure of bassist Tom Davies) plays instinctively, without any aerospace engineering project behind him. Though Michael Amster's (former member of the psychedelics Blaak Heat) powerful and precise drums maintains the trajectory, Glass directs the spaceship looking at the moment, at the "here and now". This makes the music complex, sometimes confused, but also genuine, true, unpredictable and engaging. Just abandon yourself, and perceive the sensitivity and warmth of Glass's voice (a drunken version of Mark Arm, of Mudhoney) or the burning expressive urgency of his solos. In the end the spaceship gets lost in a storm of asteroids, and it lands in the desolate desert that I told you at the beginning of this story. A sad end, certainly, but perhaps also the most natural one, given the unpredictability of the pilot and the nonexistent spirit of collaboration (or rather, I would really say, of lack of interest) of the planet on which he landed.

By now High Reeper are like at home, in Cecina. They also have the front-door key and let you find pasta ready. After their concert of the first of May last year they set so well that tonight's concert is a real reunion with friends.

Greenkalma do the honours. They welcome us with their fat and greasy riffs - that smell of weed and sweat (that of Matt Pike's belly) - and with powerful Marco Lo Presti's voice, which makes its way overwhelmingly in the sandy fog raised by the band. The desert version of Rage Against the Machine is the surprise that you do not expect, but that fits well among the massive tracks of the band, which sounds even more robust and fluid compared to their concert in Castagneto Carducci at the beginning of the year.

Rancho Bizzarro are the hosts, and they put everyone at ease with a desert rock that, every time I see them at work, it always sounds more powerful and compact. There is no shortage of lysergic openings and flowing solos, but it is in the direction of Riffs, with a capital R, that the band's music is developing. Riffs that are like solid rocks inside a liquid constantly changing music. In this archipelago, Rancho Bizzarro sow quotes and tributes to their inspiring fathers, and present them to us with the naturalness of the landlord who proudly shows you his collection of the best paintings (or records!).

To close the evening, opening the last bottle, there are the American cousins (directly from Philadelphia) High Reeper. If the previous bands had brought smoking stuff, they have a good supply of alcohol with them. Their elastic groovy doom metal is soaked in beer, which makes it slippery. Impossible not to get drunk with the oblique melodies and the constantly swaying Sabbathian riffs. Their tour has just begun, but the new drummer (Justin Di Pinto) proves he has already fully entered the band's oiled gear, even if he still does not release all his frenzy. Frenzy that instead the otherscannot contain, especially Andrew Price (sinuous like his riffs) and Zach Thomas (whose voice is definitely in a better shape than a year ago). After an amazing evening with these friends, we're looking forward to being invited once again. See you next time!

Naxatras - III

Naxatras – III
(self released, 2018)

Naxatras – III
(self released, 2018)

In 2018, with the renewed interest in Cosmos aroused by the recent scientific missions on Mars, the - spiritual and explicitly vintage - explorations of the Universe made by Naxatras sound rather strange. Yet the Greek band manages to penetrate the depths of Space through a primordial energy developed in an instinctive way, without the use of cutting-edge technology or a rational scientific method. Of course, the origin is to be found in the the late 60s / early 70s Western psychedelic hard rock, but the sensitivity with which the sound matter is processed has oriental references, as if for this band the studies of Vedic astrology were more relevant than those of physics. In the desert atmospheres of their songs there is all the aridity of that New Mexico in which the most famous flying saucer of the recent era should have crashed. Or rather, to remain in the musical field, of that Palm Desert in which the most famous generator parties of the stoner era took place. In the spiral arpeggios, overflowing with echoes, it seems to perceive the contours of the crop circles in the English countryside translated into music by Ozric Tentacles' acid trips. And in the last tracks of the album there are melancholic reflections halfway between the Space imagined by Pink Floyd and the inner one of dream pop. The fluidity with which songs flow, without these being cleaned of sand and dust, smells of spirituality free from rational constraints. A new way of imagining the desert of Mars (and what it represents) that elevates Naxatras to one of the most fascinating psychedelic realities currently in circulation.

Dead Meadow – The Nothing They Need

Dead Meadow – The Nothing They Need
(Xemu Records, 2018)

Dead Meadow – The Nothing They Need
(Xemu Records, 2018)

Desert is not a physical place: it is a state of mind. Dead Meadow invite us to follow them through its boundless spaces without indicating the path, but only the goal: the freedom hiding where Sun disappears. To reach it you need to free your mind from every day aridity on the notes of a so grainy blues, that it is refracted in psychedelic flashes. The desert imagined by the band has got the evanescent contours of a cloud of smoke exhaled by Dinosaur Jr (the independent noise roots of the Washington DC band appear in every song despite the trio has always proudly distinguished itself in the city post hardcore scene). But it is above all the most dusty American folk that makes the rainbow drawn by the band so rich in shades. With the lightness of the sand that lets itself be carried away by the wind, after it has been crumbled away from the rocks, Dead Meadow ask us to abandon ourselves to the desert, and to lose ourselves in it with them.

Karma To Burn + Rancho Bizzarro - 08.06.2018 - Fortezza Vecchia (Livorno)

Karma To Burn + Rancho Bizzarro - 08.06.2018 - Fortezza Vecchia (Livorno)

"If you have to shoot...shoot! Don't Talk!"
Poche chiacchere.

Karma To Burn + Rancho Bizzarro - 06.08.2018 - Fortezza Vecchia (Livorno)

"If you have to shoot...shoot! Don't Talk!"
No small talk. Turn on the amp and shoot some great instrumental stoner. This is what Karma to Burn tell us by quoting The good, the bad and the ugly in Mountain Czar EP, and this is what they do in every concert.

Before them, among the walls of the beautiful Fortezza Vecchia in the port of Livorno, another band that needs few words: Rancho Bizzarro. Their instrumental desert rock convinces every time more, tonight also thanks to excellent acoustics and mammoth volumes that enhance the heaviness of riffs, often alternated with moments of liquid enveloping psychedelic rock. Hot hard rock and breeze of an early summer evening.

Then Karma to Burn make the walls of the fortress tremble with their mighty groove. Their music is a gigantic oil tanker that stinks of diesel and - despite its impressive size - travels fast, raising anomalous waves in the harbour. Riffs full of gasoline, rich and greasy sounds, powerful (but at the same time snappy and elastic) drums. All trademarks of the American oil tanker for since many years, but never watered down or rusty, despite the time passing by. The captain of the ship smells of tequila like an old pirate, and he does not need words to exalt the crew tonight. Just good riffs and plenty of energy.

Stones From the Hill - V Edition – High Reeper + Tuna de Tierra + Rancho Bizzarro – 01.05.2018 - Secret Show (Cecina, LI)

Stones From the Hill - V Edition – High Reeper + Tuna de Tierra + Rancho Bizzarro – 01.05.2018 - Secret Show (Cecina, LI)

Sembra tutto perfetto.

Il nostro Stones from the Hill inizia dal Rancho Bizzarro.

You can only trust yourself and the first six Black Sabbath albums”.

Stones From the Hill - V Edition – High Reeper + Tuna de Tierra + Rancho Bizzarro – 01.05.2018 - Secret Show (Cecina, LI)

May 1st: a beautiful sunny day to be spent in the middle of nature, with friends, grilled food and beer, at a stoner rock festival. Everything seems perfect. Then bad weather distorts our plans. Fortunately, the festival is moved to a sheltered place, without damaging the atmosphere of the event.

Our Stones from the Hill starts at Rancho Bizzarro. Their instrumental desert rock sounds less dry than in the first concerts we attended, and it seems to have absorbed the humidity of the air until it swelled and developed new vegetal forms on its surface, new nuances that certainly enrich its shape. The band sounds decidedly more powerful and compact, like a cactus growing in the American desert. A cactus from which guitar solos sprout like sharp and red-hot spines, and unexpected evocative openings bloom like flowers.

While the flood continues undauntedly around us, other sounds of the desert keep us company. If Rancho Bizarro is a cactus, Tuna de Tierra are a peyote plant. Psychoactive both in the softer enveloping parts, as in the robust mesmerizing ones, they manage to lift real dunes with their sandy sounds, rich in medium frequencies. Dunes so dense that it seems to get bogged down inside them, but from which we can pull out the ankles thanks to a really powerful and full of (slowed down) groove drum. Mostly instrumental, they are effective even in the rare vocal parts, more loose than on record. At the end of their concert the air seems to have become dry, although it continues to rain. I need a beer.

The beer is offered by the American High Reeper, with their alcoholic hard rock ending the day with a ultra-funny concert. Since the first riff we understand that the five from Philadelphia fully embrace the philosophy "You can only trust yourself and the first six Black Sabbath albums". Their world stopped in the mid seventies, and I (who in those days I had not yet been born!) with them. Tonight I do not care what happened after Ozzy left Sabbath. What matters are the slanting and subtly evil riffs, which with extreme simplicity sway creating an overwhelming groove. Unfortunately, Zach Thomas voice does not have the fullness it shows on album, weakened by a flue, that anyway does not prevent him from wriggling as if he was possessed by the spirit of rock n 'roll. Spirit that takes possession of me too, reminding me that sometimes you have to take time to better headbang.

Tuna de Tierra - Tuna de Tierra

Tuna de Tierra - Tuna de Tierra
(Argonauta Records, 2017)

(Argonauta Records, 2017)

Peyote peeps out shyly from the desert sand. If its seeds were considered the gateway to communicate with deities by some Native American cultures dedicated to shamanism, its roots are so deeply embedded in the ground that they are admired for the stubborn ability to survive in an extreme environment like the arid desolate Central America. Neapolitan trio Tuna de Tierra makes us taste the properties (both lysergic and of proud resistance in an overcrowded environment such as the stoner one) of the best known cactus of the psychedelic culture, thanks to an album in which time expands itself and the border between the ego and the environment fades. Inspired by this plant both for their own name and for the cover of their debut full lenght, Tuna de Tierra give us a desert rock that sways like sand clouds raised by the hot wind, and only occasionally takes the rocky heavy shapes of the stoner rock of Kyuss school, keeping more often those relaxed and seraphic ones typical of Colour Haze. The dose of mescaline is not high, and the effect induced by the band is light, soft and enveloping. Rather than being dazzled by the burning sun in a noon of fire, we are warmed by its lukewarm rays at sunset, while the rock slowly turns red. And in the intertwining of liquid arpeggios, you can even breathe the fresh air of a source of water. Just a few grains of dust are missing in the vocal cords of the singer to make perfect this musically fascinating album, (deliberately) aimlessly travel through the vastness of Central American deserts.

Rancho Bizzarro – Rancho Bizzarro

Rancho Bizzarro – Rancho Bizzarro
(Argonauta Records, 2017)

Rancho Bizzarro – Rancho Bizzarro
(Argonauta Records, 2017)

Truly bizzarre to imagine a ranch in the middle of the Mediterranean scrub surrounding Livorno countryside and hills. A farm one step away from the hubbub of the city, isolated among dense juniper and broom bushes. I imagine that Rancho Bizzarro music comes from such a place. I imagine relaxed jam sessions, dilated by alcohol made with local plants and clouds of smoke from imported plants. Because if their desert rock is imported from the most famous Rancho of the Californian stoner scene (the one de la Luna), in the instrumental intertwinings of the band there is also an indigenous component. In addition to the typically American rocky stoner riffs and dusty psychedelic dilatations, in the fluid structures of the seven tracks of their debut album there are the hot wind sirocco and the sea sand. Watching the red sun setting on our Mediterrean Sea might not be like looking at a twilight among the cacti in the Mojave desert, but Rancho Bizzarro help us bring the two experiences together.

Yawning Man + Rancho Bizzarro - 21.05.2017 - Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Yawning Man + Rancho Bizzarro - 21.05.2017 - Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Yawning Man + Rancho Bizzarro - 05.21.2017 - Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

As the sound of the desert fascinates like Africa blues, I have just come back from a cool festival that I already feels the urgent need of another concert. And not an "other" concert tout court : it is an enchore in less than 24 hours!!!

Opener of this evening, a brand new band from Livorno: Rancho Bizzaro. No support band could have been better than this, since their desert/stoner rock sounds are exactly what it takes to warm the atmosphere. No vocal lines to follow but only great riffs in which to dive, following the rhythmic wave dictated from the bass. Hints of Brant Bjork and co, but we are not facing clones. And if the videos online today are a great taste of their music, live their impact is definitely more incisive and captivating. We just have to wait for the album next October!

I had announced that I would do an encore, and I kept my promise! And I did very well! Because tonight Yawning Man outdid themselves compared to the previous night. Maybe because it was not a festival and it was not the last band of a rich bill, either because the venue is so small that I'm pretty much on stage with the band, or just because not all the evenings have the same charm, to me it is a fact that tonight Mario Lalli & co music captures me even more and carries me even further. It really seems to wander through a boundless desert dragged by a music that is just in my head but at the same time saturates all the air and the space I am immersed in. Sounds even better calibrated than the previous night can only perfect everything.

Never miss a chance for a good desert concert: the trip really worth the ticket!

John Garcia - The Coyote Who Spoke in Tongues

John Garcia - The Coyote Who Spoke in Tongues
(Napalm Records, 2017)

John Garcia - The Coyote Who Spoke in Tongues
(Napalm Records, 2017)

Certain albums are perfect for certain moments. I found the perfect album for those spring evenings when, coming out from work  tired, I drive back home with the sunset light in my eyes. In an aseptic and sad plain, the Red Sun colouring the giant structures of wind turbines is a sort of romantic vision. Perfect to match the acoustic music of The Coyote Who Spoke in Tongues. John Garcia gives new light and new life to Kyuss classics (Green Machine, Space Cadet, Gardenia, El Rodeo) so perfect to exclude the possibility of their rearrangement. By giving them a new "dress", instead, Garcia can convey the wonderful feeling experienced many years ago by listening to them for the first time. And, for example, an intimate captivating Green Machine amazes those who knew it as a steamroller. But even the brand new songs strike a chord through the stunning desert atmosphere accentuated by Garcia singing on high notes (as if its vocal cords had become Cedric Bixler Zavala ones), while the guitar draws the outlines of the Grand Canyon with its burning blues rock. On spring evenings, I let myself to be driven by him, lost in the desert on the borders of Mexico, in search of a peyote stoned shaman.

Blaak Heat - Shifting Mirrors

Blaak Heat - Shifting Mirrors
(Svart Records, Tee Pee Records, 2016)

Blaak Heat - Shifting Mirrors
(Svart Records, Tee Pee Records, 2016)

Erase boundaries, like a sea wave erase signs on the sand. Blaak Heat music is the ocean wave having fun in melting together grains of different colors and backgrounds, building castles one step away from the shore, to deform and melt them away. A wave that comes from the heart of Europe (Paris, city where the band formed) to land in Los Angeles (new homeland of the band from 2012). The musical journey is however much longer and more tortuous than that one geographically connecting the two cities. After a short visit in Germany in the early 70s - to absorb the cosmic vastness and explorer spirit of Agitation Free - and before crossing the Atlantic Ocean - to take part in some peyote-based ancient ritual in the tent of a tribe of Indians of America - the musical wave of Blaak Heat finds its inspirtaion in the heart of the Middle East. At the foot of an Afghan mountain, or on the southern shores of the Black Sea, the trio collects and reworks the melodic and rhythmic core of Shifting Mirrors, before melding it with volcanic heavy psych explosions, dusty as the Californian desert rock. In the boundless Asian deserts the seeds of a new psychedelia are collected and processed. And they are not simply embedded in a Western rock matrix as exotic tourist souvenirs, yet they are harmoniously fused with the roots of the band. In this age of nationalist resurgence and clashes of civilizations and religions, a balanced, smooth and mature blend that shows an implicit political value, as well as a musical one. A lesson to be deeply enjoyed and understood.

Heavy Psych Sounds Fest Volume III – Day 2

Heavy Psych Sounds Fest Volume III – Day 2
[Atomic Bitchwax + Giöbia + Fatso Jetson + Duel + Deville + Komatsu]

Infine, Atomic Bitchwax: strepitosi! E all'improvviso ci ritroviamo dentro ad Animals,  con Pigs on the Wings e Pigs...travolgente! assolutamente memorabile!

Heavy Psych Sounds Fest Volume III – Day 2
[Atomic Bitchwax + Giöbia + Fatso Jetson + Duel + Deville + Komatsu]

It seems almost impossible, but today bill is even more electrifying than yesterday one. Our second day then starts from the smallest stage with the Dutch Komatsu. Together with the Atomic Bitchwax, we saved their shows for this festival, despite their being also in Desertfest Antwerp lineup 2 weeks ago. Compact, with a great stoner groove, they got a warm dirty sound that seduces the listener. The "complementary" sound of two guitars - one may be defined as sandy, while the other is heavier and tougher - perfectly goes with the slightly rough vocals. There is room also for a few slow parts (even dissonant and sludgy), but the hallmark of their set is the great, really addictive, groove!

And then you move to the main stage, and you find yourself in front of a band which seems to come straight out of a 80s metal video! Deville = rivers of energy and drive. Uncontrollable (especially the guitarist and bassist) the four Swedes have their strength in their groovy riffs - halfway between stoner and metal - and tight rhythms. Some songs are more melody-oriented and perhaps vocals lose something if compared to the album. But undoubtedly the stage increases their metal side and therefore the heavy attack of their songs.

After only two weeks it is time for Duel once again, and they again confirm to be in their seventh heaven. As Trix stage, the four from Austin give all their best and - despite sounds are not perfect - exalted and exalting they play a concert from which we can not break away! Their gigs confirmed themselves as unmissable!

We would like to recover a bit our hearing (after three bands in a row without a breather), but Fatso Jetson claim us fatally ... because their concert is something sensational! Mario Lalli reminds us of Steve Albini, both for the attitude (although much more down to earth) and the guitar style. The grooviest songs have got the aftertaste of 80s independent noise rock (indeed Lalli family comes exactly from those years, with Yawning Man active since the middle of that decade, before Fatso Jetson) and they stand out for the edgy nervousness and extremely acids and scratching sounds. Slower songs, then, are pure desert rock (well, they invented it!) and they carry the listener into another dimension, estranging it from the context in which it is immersed, making him wave on hypnotic arpeggios. Absolutely awesome!

And now it is really time to let our ears rest a little and so we listen to only a part of Giöbia set, having recently listened to them at Desertfest in Belgium. More compact than in that show (also because once again with their own drummer), they sound particularly heavy and powerful. Super-psychedelic as it is iin their essence, they stun the listener with their mountains of effects, seizing him in their dark dream.

Finally Atomic Bitchwax: amazing! An unstoppable tornado. Whirling and hyperkinetic, they combine a monstruous groove (especially in the bluesy stoner riffs) with compact metal sounds (anyway rich in basses) and almost thrash/hardcore outbursts at full speed: they might look like Rust in Peace era Megadeth playing stoner. They start with Pink Floyd In The Flesh - powerful! - that they then resume in mid-concert, transforming the riff in a blow that makes it seem to come out of the Tony Iommi imagination in his early days. And suddenly we find ourselves into Animals, with Pigs on the Wings and Pigs ... overwhelming! absolutely memorable! And the end of the concert it is time for mosh under the stage (and there we are!): really unthinkable to stand still and impassive! Absolutely one of the best concerts of the year!!!

With this incredible Atomic Bitchwax set ends the third chapter of a festival unique in its kind here in Italy. And if this edition has swept away the other two for the incredible bill, we can only hope (and trust!) that the fourth will go even further! Meanwhile ... stay rock, stay heavy, stay psych!!!
