Heavy Psych Sounds Fest Volume III – Day 2
[Atomic Bitchwax + Giöbia + Fatso Jetson + Duel + Deville + Komatsu]
Sembra quasi impossibile, ma il bill di oggi è ancora più galvanizzante di quello del giorno di apertura. Il nostro secondo giorno inizia quindi dal palco più piccolo con gli olandesi Komatsu. Insieme agli Atomic Bitchwax, ce li siamo tenuti in serbo per questo festival, pur essendo in scaletta anche al Desertfest Antwerp di 2 settimane fa. Compatti, con un gran tiro stoner, hanno un suono caldo e sporco che seduce l'ascoltatore. Il sound "complementare" delle due chitarre - una più sabbiosa, l'altra più compatta e pesante - si sposa alla perfezione con il cantato leggermente ruvido. C'è lo spazio per alcuni passaggi rallentati (anche dissonanti e sludgeosi), ma il tratto distintivo del loro set è il gran tiro, davvero coinvolgente!
E poi ti sposti davanti al palco più grande, e ti ritrovi davanti ad una band che sembra uscita da un video metal degli anni 80! Deville = fiumi di energia e grinta. Incontenibili (soprattutto il chitarrista ed il bassista) i quattro svedesi hanno il loro punto di forza nei riffs ricchi di groove - a mezza strada fra stoner e metal - e nelle ritmiche serrate. Alcuni pezzi sono più sbilanciati sulla melodia e forse perdono qualcosa rispetto all'album per ciò che riguarda il cantato. Ma indubbiamente il palco aumenta il loro lato più metal e quindi l'attacco heavy delle loro canzoni.
A distanza di sole due settimane ci becchiamo nuovamente i Duel, che confermano il loro stato di grazia! Come sul palco del Trix, i quattro di Austin non si risparmiano e - nonostante i suoni non siano perfetti - esaltati ed esaltanti, suonano un concerto dal quale non riusciamo a staccarci! Si confermano imperdibili dal vivo!
Vorremmo recuperare un po' l'udito (dopo tre bands di fila senza un attimo di respiro), ma i Fatso Jetson ci reclamano fatalmente... perché il loro concerto è qualcosa di clamoroso! Mario Lalli ci riporta alla mente Steve Albini, sia come attitudine (anche se molto più alla mano) sia come modo di suonare. I brani più tirati, infatti, hanno quel retrogusto di noise rock indipendente anni '80 (e del resto la famiglia Lalli viene proprio da quegli anni, con gli Yawning Man attivi già dalla metà di quella decade, prima dei Fatso Jetson) e spiccano per il nervosismo spigoloso ed i suoni estremamente acidi e graffianti. I brani più lenti, poi, sono puro desert rock (si sa, l’hanno inventato loro!) e trasportano l'ascoltatore in una dimensione altra, estraniandolo dal contesto in cui è immerso, facendolo oscillare sugli ipnotici arpeggi. Assolutamente grandiosi!
A questo punto ci prendiamo davvero il lusso di far riposare un po' l'udito, e ci ascoltiamo solo parte del set dei Giöbia avendoli ascoltati di recente al Desertfest in Belgio. Più compatti e rotondi che in quell'occasione (anche perché è rientrato in formazione il loro batterista naturale), risultano soprattutto molto più pesanti e potenti. Super-psichedelici come è insito nella loro essenza, ottundono l’ascoltatore con le loro montagne di effetti, rapendolo nel loro sogno oscuro.
Infine, Atomic Bitchwax: strepitosi! Un tornado inarrestabile. Vorticosi e ipercinetici, abbinano un groove spaventoso (soprattutto nei riff più stoner, di matrice blues) a suoni compatti e metal (ma comunque carichi di bassi) e sfuriate a tutta velocità quasi thrash e hardcore: potrebbero sembrare i Megadeth di Rust in Peace che suonano stoner. Aprono con In the Flesh dei Pink Floyd - potentissima! - che riprendono poi a metà concerto, trasformando il riff in una mazzata che lo fa sembrare uscito dalla fantasia di Tony Iommi ad inizio carriera. E all'improvviso ci ritroviamo dentro ad Animals, con Pigs on the Wings e Pigs...travolgente! assolutamente memorabile! E sul finire del concerto non può che scattare un pò di pogo sotto il palco (dove siamo anche noi!): rimanere fermi ed impassibili è davvero impensabile! Assolutamente tra i concerti dell’anno!!!
Con questo incredibile set degli Atomic Bitchwax si chiude il terzo capitolo di un festival unico nel suo genere qui in Italia. E se quest'edizione ha spazzato via le altre due per l'incredibile bill, non possiamo che confidare che la quarta andrà ancora oltre! Nel frattempo...stay rock, stay heavy, stay psych!!!

It seems almost impossible, but today bill is even more electrifying than yesterday one. Our second day then starts from the smallest stage with the Dutch Komatsu. Together with the Atomic Bitchwax, we saved their shows for this festival, despite their being also in Desertfest Antwerp lineup 2 weeks ago. Compact, with a great stoner groove, they got a warm dirty sound that seduces the listener. The "complementary" sound of two guitars - one may be defined as sandy, while the other is heavier and tougher - perfectly goes with the slightly rough vocals. There is room also for a few slow parts (even dissonant and sludgy), but the hallmark of their set is the great, really addictive, groove!
And then you move to the main stage, and you find yourself in front of a band which seems to come straight out of a 80s metal video! Deville = rivers of energy and drive. Uncontrollable (especially the guitarist and bassist) the four Swedes have their strength in their groovy riffs - halfway between stoner and metal - and tight rhythms. Some songs are more melody-oriented and perhaps vocals lose something if compared to the album. But undoubtedly the stage increases their metal side and therefore the heavy attack of their songs.
After only two weeks it is time for Duel once again, and they again confirm to be in their seventh heaven. As Trix stage, the four from Austin give all their best and - despite sounds are not perfect - exalted and exalting they play a concert from which we can not break away! Their gigs confirmed themselves as unmissable!
We would like to recover a bit our hearing (after three bands in a row without a breather), but Fatso Jetson claim us fatally ... because their concert is something sensational! Mario Lalli reminds us of Steve Albini, both for the attitude (although much more down to earth) and the guitar style. The grooviest songs have got the aftertaste of 80s independent noise rock (indeed Lalli family comes exactly from those years, with Yawning Man active since the middle of that decade, before Fatso Jetson) and they stand out for the edgy nervousness and extremely acids and scratching sounds. Slower songs, then, are pure desert rock (well, they invented it!) and they carry the listener into another dimension, estranging it from the context in which it is immersed, making him wave on hypnotic arpeggios. Absolutely awesome!
And now it is really time to let our ears rest a little and so we listen to only a part of Giöbia set, having recently listened to them at Desertfest in Belgium. More compact than in that show (also because once again with their own drummer), they sound particularly heavy and powerful. Super-psychedelic as it is iin their essence, they stun the listener with their mountains of effects, seizing him in their dark dream.
Finally Atomic Bitchwax: amazing! An unstoppable tornado. Whirling and hyperkinetic, they combine a monstruous groove (especially in the bluesy stoner riffs) with compact metal sounds (anyway rich in basses) and almost thrash/hardcore outbursts at full speed: they might look like Rust in Peace era Megadeth playing stoner. They start with Pink Floyd In The Flesh - powerful! - that they then resume in mid-concert, transforming the riff in a blow that makes it seem to come out of the Tony Iommi imagination in his early days. And suddenly we find ourselves into Animals, with Pigs on the Wings and Pigs ... overwhelming! absolutely memorable! And the end of the concert it is time for mosh under the stage (and there we are!): really unthinkable to stand still and impassive! Absolutely one of the best concerts of the year!!!
With this incredible Atomic Bitchwax set ends the third chapter of a festival unique in its kind here in Italy. And if this edition has swept away the other two for the incredible bill, we can only hope (and trust!) that the fourth will go even further! Meanwhile ... stay rock, stay heavy, stay psych!!!
