Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation - Horse Dance

Quando salirono alla ribalta (fra la fine degli anni '60 e gli anni '80) le macchine fotografiche Polaroid raccolsero un grande successo per l’immediatezza con la quale le fotografie venivano sviluppate, direttamente tra le mani di chi le aveva scattate. Tecnologia futuribile alla portata di tutti. Adesso che le Polaroid sono diventate obsolete e che la condivisione in tempo reale di scatti della nostra vita è la norma, le vecchie macchine per fotografie istantanee affascinano ancor di più, essendosi ammantate di un’atmosfera nostalgica. Per questo un’applicazione per smartphone come Instagram, che si basa sul taglio quadrato dell’inquadratura e su foto ritoccabili con filtri che simulano gli effetti dell’usura del tempo ha così tanto successo ultimamente. Horse Dance - album della svedese Josefin Öhrn e della sua band The Liberation - segue lo stesso principio di Instagram (guarda caso la foto di copertina, con il soggetto al centro, pare manipolata con l’applicazione in questione). La musica della band svedese recupera infatti, con senso nostalgico e vagamente malinconico, suoni e atmosfere del synth-pop/darkwave di inizio anni '80, oltre che del pop psichedelico di fine '60 e del krautrock dei 70, e lo rilegge nell’ottica del nuovo millennio, con la sensibilità di una band indie. Il senso di distacco dal presente è trasmesso con un incedere annoiato, pur essendo una musica pienamente inserita nella contemporaneità. Otto bozzetti pop in cui ripetizioni ipnotiche di synth e ritmiche pre-elettroniche ossessive di batteria si inseguono lungo le autostrade care ai Kraftwerk e ai Can, miscelandosi con accenni analogici (l’energia e il calore di una chitarra - ora riverberata, ora fuzzosa - e di un basso gommoso ed elastico). Il tutto mentre la voce sospirata, ipnotica, sensuale della Öhrn ci porta in territori sognanti e onirici. Il risultato è un bel disco psichedelico e caleidoscopico, affascinante come una vecchia Polaroid (o almeno come una bella foto rielaborata con Instagram!).

When they came into the limelight (between the late 60s and the 80s) Polaroid cameras gathered a great success for the immediacy with which photos were developed, right into the hands of those who shot them. Futuristic technology available to everyone. Now that Polaroid cameras have become obsolete and that the sharing of real-time shots of our life is the norm, the old machines for instant photographs have become even more fascinating, cloaked in a nostalgic atmosphere. This is why a smartphone app like Instagram, based on cut square framing and photos retouchable with filters simulating the effects of time wear, it is so successful lately. Horse Dance - album of the Swedish Josefin Öhrn and her band The Liberation - follows the same principle of Instagram (coincidentally, with the subject at its center, the cover photo seems manipulated by this app). Indeed, with a nostalgic, vaguely melancholy sense, the music of the Swedish band recovers the sounds and atmospheres of the eraly 80s synth-pop/darkwave, as well as the late 60s psychedelic pop and 70s krautrock, and it rereads it in the light of the new millennium, with the sensitivity of an indie band. The sense of detachment from the present is transmitted with a bored gait, despite being a music fully seated in the contemporary world. Eight pop sketches in which hypnotic synth repetitions and obsessive pre-electronic drum rhythms chase one each other along those highways dear to Kraftwerk and Can, mixing themselves with analog hints (the energy and warmth of a - now reverberated now fuzzy - guitar and a gummy elastic bass). All this while Josefin Öhrn hypnotic, sensual voice takes us intodreamy and dreamlike territories. The result is a beautiful psychedelic and kaleidoscopic album, charming as an old Polaroid (or at least as a nice picture reworked with Instagram!).
