Celeste - 23.09.2017 - Alchemica (Bologna)

Celeste - 23.09.2017 - Alchemica (Bologna)

Buio in sala.

Celeste - 09.23.2017 - Alchemica (Bologna)

Dark in the hall. Dark on stage. So much smoke to form a dense fog. One, two, three, four headlamps with red light turn on in sequence. And then it's the apocalypse. There is very little celestial in the French Celeste. More than suspended in the empyrean sky, we are sunk into the underground. It seems to be inside a tunnel in the depths of a mine. Little air, and a strong sense of oppression. Almost of dismay. The one and only compass available are the the dim beams of red light of the four Charon driving us into what seems a narrow infernal cavity. The attacks of the quartet are implacable and deadly. Drums is at the same time the foundations and the columns of the compositions of the French combo. The two guitars and the bass build walls and bridges of riffs in which we wander lost, crushed, but at the same time bewitched. Only 50 minutes, flying away in a moment. The music over, the lights turned on again, it is like breathing again after a long apnoea. It's like feeling more free, lighter. Exiting from Alchemica, the darkness of the night suddenly appears more celestial.

Ufomammut + Lili Refrain + Three Eyes Left + Hyperwülff – 12.12.2015 - Alchemica Music Club (Bologna)

Ufomammut + Lili Refrain + Three Eyes Left + Hyperwülff – 12.12.2015 - Alchemica Music Club (Bologna)

Three Eyes Left.

Ufomammut + Lili Refrain + Three Eyes Left + Hyperwülff – 12.12.2015 - Alchemica Music Club (Bologna)

I have been waiting for a new Ufomammut concert since I first listened to Ecate. From the very beginning I thought of their latest full lenght as simply perfect to be performed live. I had to wait a few months, but in the end it was worth it!

Hyperwülff - duo from Bologna - opens the evening with their sludgy, doomy post hardcore worthy of the best years of the genre. Powerful and enthralling, their extremely thick wall of sound let think of a six members combo (like Cult of Luna) on stage, instead of the two young guys actually performing. Perfect even in the vocals - that really remind me of the first albums of Isis - in just 30 minutes Hyperwüllf win me, bringing me back in time of 10 years, yet without leaving me with the impression of a deja vu.

Then, another band from Bologna: Three Eyes Left. Stoner doom in its pure essence. Obsessive and alienating in their riffs, songs flow on in their bogging magma, well supported by a rightly sick voice, partly reminiscent of a certain Buzz Osborne. After the sludgy fury of the opening, the breaking is abrupt and we get mired in this trip of basses and squared strophes, offspring of such illustrious parents as Black Sabbath and Saint Vitus.

Lili Refrain gets on stage with her guitar, effects and red-black ostrich feather scarf and I am well glad to see her live once again after only two months and half. Her voice and her guitar are always fascinating and captivating: they capture and hypnotize the audience. The set list is focused on Kawax, and Nature Boy and 666 Burns are the apex of a show unfortunately penalized by some technical problems. Amp on stage is not her own and it seems unable to cope with the overlaps of looped guitar riffs, and the sound engineer – a bit absent and inattentive to requests coming from the stage – is lacking in overcoming tecnhical deficiencies. These drawbacks are a bit annoying, anyway they do not overshadow Lili’s talent and her show.

Finally Ufomammut! Great, amazing! Ecate has to be played live: I thought it from the very first moment I listened to it and now I have got the final proof I was right. Perfect marriage of the “ufo” and “mammoth” parts of the band, the new songs are sonic boulders looming upon the audience, stunning it with their psychedelic sounds and spacey dilations of their riffs. Drum is the queen and punctuates the elephantine march of the music of the trio from Tortona. A single hugesuite, a single monolithic musical movement that absorbs and abducts the listener. The quality of sounds improves as the concert goes on, managing to create a sonic dough in which each musical instrument stands out both as a soloist and as a member of a choir: everything melts in a sonic wave which is the whole and the part at the very same time. Since March 2006 (the first time I saw them live…in Bologna!) to present, the sound of the band has changed several times and their concerts have always been an added value for their music. After 10 years since the first live show I can safely say that Ufomammut continue to give all of themselves, and their music – at the same time more psychedelic and more granitic – finds its perfect and ideal fulfillment right on stage.

Shining + Darkend + Selvans + Malnàtt + Sulfur – 07.11.2015 – Alchemica Music Club (Bologna)

Shining + Darkend + Selvans + Malnàtt + Sulfur – 07.11.2015 – Alchemica Music Club (Bologna)

“Last and least” Shining. Potrei limitarmi a dire “imbarazzante”.

Shining + Darkend + Selvans + Malnàtt + Sulfur – 11.07.2015 – Alchemica Music Club (Bologna)

Sooner or later the long sequence of great concerts of this autumn had to stop. Well, it was not necessary to interrupt it in such a drastic way. Shining concert – the Swedish Shining, by Niklas Kvarforth – gets right at the first step of the podium of the 5 worsts concerts of my life. But let proceed with order: it is not all to be thrown in the dustbin in this evening. It is a sort of “decreasing” evening.

Tuscan Sulfur as opening. Their doom metal is a really good prelude for the evening: mighty and full of energy, with captivating vocals (especially in the growl parts), they also have got really interesting melodies.

Then Malnàtt (from Bologna), and their coming up on stage tells everything about their show. Skull masks, black hood and Pan flutes for their leader and a great attack as much heavy as thrash-death. Halfway between serious and humorous, in part for the lyrics, in part for how they stand on the stage, and in great part for Porz talks, Malnàtt should open the eyes of the audience about what awaits them: “a lot of smoke and little roast”. What really counts are the masks, aren’t they? Porz even inserts earplugs in his ears while on stage with microphone in his hand. And with mockeries and jokes to those he defines “blackisti”, their half an hour concert is the musical – and not only musical – apex of this evening.

Selvans – from Abruzzo with folklore – let us immediately understand what was alluding Porz with the black cloth over his head. They are a really good band, that is for sure: their atmospheric black metal is compelling and they are really skilful as musicians. Beautiful samples enrich their songs, without saturating them or flattening them on recordings…but one should listen to them with closed curtain. Too many poses, too many scenographies. The ostentatious display of anger and evil is ridiculed by the two images of Pan (yes, the same god Pan of Porz’ flutes…ask yourself why…) on stage: a Pan which has nothing of the satyr, being just a lascivious, flirtatious pimp. And what about the wolf mask worn by the singer and making him completely voiceless? It is worth listen to them on cd. But, please, avoid concerts. Their music is definitely good and their songs, live, have got a great, beautiful impact: but the way they stay on the stage obscures almost all their value.

Darkend confirm the impression of their show in Brescia three weeks before (playing as openers for Forgotten Tomb). And this time defects are more evident because of the really awful sounds.

“Last and least” Shining. I could just say “embarrassing”. But I do want to give you some more details. Niklas Kvarforth is completely voiceless and his band plays rambling and limp while he behaves like a small spoiled child (sorry, but this is the best way I can describe him!) in such a way that even Axl Rose in his heyday would have paled! It is enough to say that after only 5/10 minutes from the beginning of the concert he got off the stage visibly testy and angry after the shell game with all the microphones on stage, pretending a technical problem (for sure a real one in his head), while the rest of the band (badly) play Sweet Child o' Mine!!! Suicidal depressive black metal? …what??? Forget the atmospheres once loved in amazing albums as V - Halmstad: nothing more sounds gloomy, melancholic, torn or sick. The wonderful Neka Morgondagen is literally mangled by a “non voice” and a live arrangement a million miles far away from the anguished gloom and melancholy of the studio version. Supported by a band that could hardly try to play as a cover band of some 80s glam combo, Niklas Kvarforth is just a series of bungled poses and a musical zero.
Delusion of a midautumn night. Yet it opens to reflections on a musical world too often in search of an author. A bit of theatricality never disturbs anyone. Nobody displeases a good presence on stage – and video projections, light effects, and more or less original looks more or less typical of a certain musical genre. But what is important – what has to be important – is Music. All the rest is just subsidiary.
