Roadburn 2018 - Day 3

Roadburn 2018 - Day 3

[Earthless & Kikagaku Moyo + Godspeed You! Black Emperor + Boris with Stephen O'Malley + Damo Suzuki & Minami Deutsch + Hugsjá + Bell Witch]

Roadburn 2018 - Day 3

[Earthless & Kikagaku Moyo + Godspeed You! Black Emperor + Boris with Stephen O'Malley + Damo Suzuki & Minami Deutsch + Hugsjá + Bell Witch]

Even today it is abnormal warm for the season. But at 2:00 pm of this sunny day there are those who are able to throw you suddenly into the darkest gloomy autumn. Bell Witch at the Koepelhal, for the performance of the whole Mirror Reaper. An hour and a half of apocalyptic and very slow funeral doom that annihilates the numerous audience (and at the end of the concert we also discover that many did not manage to attend their show ... sold out at the opening!). The American duo stuns us with his almost static, yet evocative, phrasings of bass and drums. A breath of "lightness" is brought thanks to the appearance of Erik Moggridge (Aerial Ruin) and his fragile and melancholic voice. Atmospheres that recall large desolate and solitary spaces, in which it is wonderful to get lost and feel tiny. A theater hall concert, to be enjoyed sitting on comfortable armchairs, that - instead - we attend standing, exhausted by the heat and the heaviness of this obnubilating music.

A little bit of sunlight and air, to regain contact with life and move to 013 where Hugsjá are performing their whole work. It is like being transported by a Viking ship in a distant place and time, far from the present in which we move. Ivar Bjørnson (Enslaved) and Einar Selvik (Wardruna) work is the result of a research on Norway, its history and culture, and it is the first time that it has been proposed outside the borders of their mother country. Through the use of ancient musical instruments and through the deepening of traditions that can be described as ancestral, Hugsjá is an acoustic work that is striking for its power and its evocative narrative capacity. Often choral, voices immerse the listener in something ancient that still speaks to those who stretch their ears towards them.

In the Green Room, then, a spaceship headed by a Japanese crew awaits us. Transporting us to another dimension are Minami Deutsch, exceptionally led by Damo Suzuki, for a continuous flowing liquid jam. The veteran guru of krautrock is a true force of nature and - despite his age and long artistic career - he still has got a freshness and a youth beyond compare. Whether he launches himself into vocal experiments, or he follows more traditional paths, his voice creates images that are perfectly grafted to on the sound tracks created by the talented Minami Deutsch, worthy Japanese heirs of Can and Neu! A truly unmissable experience that exalts so much in the softer and more enveloping passages, as well as in the most obsessive and labyrinthine ones.

It is really a short step from the Green Room to the Main Stage. What awaits us is another collaboration of the highest level and that manages to exceed our high expectations. Boris, with Stephen O'Malley, for the performance of the whole Absolutego. The wall of amplifiers on stage is really impressive, and half of it is O'Malley prerogative. We expect to be overwhelmed by impenetrable stunning deafening drones. Actually what awaits us is a cosmic journey. Live, Tokyo trio's debut album acquires a very intense psychedelic atmosphere, turning into a sort of Zeit (Tangerine Dream) with guitars instead of synthesizers. Not only saturation of sounds and stratification of distortions, but also dissonant waves and rarefied harmonies emerging powerful from the sound magma bewilder the audience. When Atsuo makes the mammoth sound flux disappear within two cymbals in collision, it is as if a galaxy imploded before our eyes and inside our ears. Pure ecstasy. By far Boris best concert among the three we attended in the last year and a half.

The charm of the analog and the evocative power of soundtrack are what distinguishes Godspeed You! Black Emperor and their long set. The Canadian band is a real ensemble, standing on stage like an orchestra. Sounds are calibrated and harmonized to perfection. Each song is a suite of music and emotions. To accentuate and increase these feelings, videoprojections are all analog and hand-assembled with great skill and taste (sometimes the film is placed near to a glowing light bulb to be deformed). Almost like watching a silent film whose sound commentary is performed live by a small orchestra, but with reversed roles. A really suggestive concert in which the Canadian band provides its own personal interpretation of 70s German cosmic music, read as a soundtrack to an imaginary film that, in the final climax, makes us leave the cinema with tears in our eyes.

A special meeting between East and West concludes this day marked by a high level of cosmic psychedelia. The last collaboration of the day is a super jam by Earthless and Kikagaku Moyo. Basically two mega improvisations of half an hour each, in which the members of the respective bands overlap each other almost as in a canon, triggering a dialogue with many voices, which follows twisted dreamlike paths and then converges in a sonic shock wave of incredible impact. Beautifully harmonious and evocative is the intertwining of oriental meditation (soft, fluid and guided by the sitar) and the expansion of western consciousness (electric, visceral and explosive). The musical flow created by the eight musicians seems to live on its own life and it seems unstoppable. But just as suddenly it appeared, just as suddenly it comes to its end and leaves us as suspended and eager to undertake a new journey.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Luciferian Towers

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Luciferian Towers
(Constellation, 2017)

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Luciferian Towers
(Constellation, 2017)

The absence of a human voice, the personality of the individual musicians sacrificed to the ensemble, and a musical body not made up of clearly defined and structured parts, yet a stream in continuous transformation, at first glance they could induce to consider Godspeed You! Black Emperor music as an abstract entity, accesible only from a conceptual point of view. Yet the emotional strength of the suites composed by the Canadian band during its career has got an evocative power that has always been able to arouse vivid images (real imaginary movies) in the mind of the listener. Movies whose main characters are man and his conflicts.

In its slow-flowing magma, Luciferian Towers is a film with a strong subject (the melody), which fearless ventures in vast solitary spaces. A subject in which the listener can not but recognize himself and from which he can not help to be guided. The power, the tension and the unpredictability of the previous album now give way to a melancholy sensation of peace, apparently static for those used to certain sounds. But it is precisely in this sense of waiting, torn by guitar feedbacks and engaging melodic lines of violins, that hides the beauty of this album. Rather than shouting at the revolt against the centers of Western economic power (as the titles and notes of the album seem to suggest), the warm reflections of Luciferian Towers convey the feeling of a humanity locked in a shelter, ready to launch an attack that probably will never take place. Raising this sixth album to the levels of the band's previous works are the boundless horizons of Anthem for No State, in which you can breathe the warm sandy wind of a Morricone western soundtrack, a post apocalyptic image of a new humanity. A record that proves to be the least surprising of the band, but also the most cohesive, simple and - probably - human.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress
(Constellation, 2015)

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress
(Constellation, 2015)

We are once again charmed and amazed by the new creature conceived by Godspeed You! Black Emperor and this is the proof that the Canadian band is capable of reinventing its music without abandoning the emotive core that marks it. Their fifth full length album powerfully claims attention, especially of those willing to dive only on the surface of it, now that the sensationalist enthusiasm generated by the reunion has waned. Sonic waves opening Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress show from the very beginning that we are swimming in significantly different waters from the ones already known. So heavy and sturdy as never before, Canadians recall undulant drones of last Earth albums (with devastating feedbacks and walls of distortions) more than post rock music – genre of which they are considered among the greatest interpreters. In less than 45 minutes there is no trace of ambient noises, distant voices or sonic fragments that usually enriched the emotionality of past albums. Composed during last tours and already performed live several times, the new opus by GY!BE has been shaped through time until it reached its essential form, proving to be the most synthetic and concise in the band career, yet at the same time the one that mostly exalts the opposites of the poetics of the band. While opening and closing deeply plant their roots in the rock sound of distorted guitars, the central core flows in one of the deepest cosmic oceans ever conceived by the band.
