The Body - I Have Fought Against It, But I Can’t Any Longer.

The Body - I Have Fought Against It, But I Can’t Any Longer.
(Thrill Jockey, 2018)

“I Have Fought Against It, But I Can’t Any Longer.”

The Body - I Have Fought Against It, But I Can’t Any Longer.
(Thrill Jockey, 2018)

“I Have Fought Against It, But I Can’t Any Longer.” After writing the full stop and thus concluding the letter addressed to her sister, Virginia Woolf committed suicide. With this premise, putting on the stereo a record that from the title mentions such an intimate and dramatic confession makes you feel dirty. Yet the heartbeat that makes its way into the sea of drones and noises - and on which the Chrissy Wolpert voice recites a touching funeral poem - shows how much The Body music throws itself into pain with humanity, without trace of morbid voyeurism. Soon we become protagonists of this suffering, and no longer spectators. It is in this moment that everything collapses, within us. The weight of pain cracks the lucidity and madness prevails, sucking us in a pathological vortex, in which an angelic voice (that of Kristin Hayter, aka Lingua Ignota) turns into a scary rattle, and bassess echoe deeply on martial electronic bases reminiscent of early Swans nightmares and Throbbing Gristle raving. For The Body, self-destruction is both disgusting and magnetic. It has an attractive power that crosses the boundaries of rational thought. And it is so emotionally overwhelming to annihilate every emotion. Once in its vortex, the forces to get out of it are always weaker. Asthenia is the last step of this descent into the abyss, and there could be no more intense words than Bohumil Hrabal ones to accompany us.

Author & Punisher – Beastland

Author & Punisher – Beastland
(2018, Relapse Records)

Author & Punisher – Beastland
(2018, Relapse Records)

The fusion between man and machine attracts and scares because it asks questions about the boundary between human beings and their creations, and how much they can govern their own creator, replacing it. A society increasingly dependent on technology and fanatically believing in progress poses new dilemmas that artists like Tristan Shone (under the pseudonym Author & Punisher) set to music. Music that - literally - is the result of cooperation between flesh and steel, nerves and plastic, muscles and metal. The American musician is in fact a mechanical engineer who has designed and built with his own hands the instruments through which he controls synthesizers and keyboards. A sort of cybernetic exoskeleton that responds with sounds and noises to the physical and real movements of its creator. A retrofuturist cyborg that seems to have come from Jules Verne mind, or from HR Giger dreams. Inevitably his music is a heavy obsessive industrial metal in which the human voice is filtered and distorted through walls of rusty reinforced concrete and short-circuited electrical tangles. If Godflesh (one of the main sources of inspiration for Shone, along with Nine Inch Nails of The Downward Spiral era and pre-Mechanical Animals Marilyn Manson) cast a mystical light on the post-self that will be born when machines will have definitively conquered power, Author & Punisher sees a possible collaboration in the apocalyptic clash between organic and inorganic. Not only in the cooperation between the human idea and the mechanical action of Shone and his instruments, but also in the melodies that appear between the many explosions there is the fascination for a possible conciliation. Perhaps because the self-consciousness of the creature built by Shone is only embryonic and in every way still dependent on man? But what could happen in the future?

OvO sonorizzano Frankenstein (J. Whale, 1931) - 21.03.2019 - Ex Cinema Aurora (Livorno)

OvO sonorizzano Frankenstein (J. Whale, 1931) - 21.03.2019 - Ex Cinema Aurora (Livorno)

OvO adding sound to Frankenstein (J. Whale, 1931) - 03.21.2019 - Ex Cinema Aurora (Livorno)

In the past I had already attended to 20s/30s movies with live soundtracks. Mostly it was a jazz trio acting as a narration in music of milestones of German expressionism.

But tonight's one is an event that goes further. In fact the live soundtrack of James Whale's Frankenstein is entrusted to a real band, and of those that surely leave the mark and the sign of their (distinct) personality: OvO.

If Whale's movie (directed in 1931) is a cinematographic narration of a disconcerting modernity and newness, OvO's music is the post-modern "chant" that pushes even higher the bar of expressiveness and of the distorted - and at the time same extremely centered - visionary nature of this film. To the cruelty of the frames and their naked story, OvO's music adds a extra load of delirium and disturbance. And in those parts where music becomes heavier and more distorted, more noisy and more rotten (when Dr. Frankestein gives life to his creature during the storm and when the blind angry rabble hunts and sends to the stake the "monster" generated by the experiments of the young unscrupulous doctor), the fusion between image and sound finds its perfect fulfillment. One almost has the impression of not being able to watch Whale's movie without OvO's music.

Pefect matching of images and music, perfectly inserted in the setting of the Ex Aurora Cinema, which really seemed to be its natural stage, the natural contour scenery.

Chelsea Wolfe – Hiss Spun

Chelsea Wolfe – Hiss Spun
(Sargent House, 2017)

Chelsea Wolfe – Hiss Spun
(Sargent House, 2017)

I turned up the volume, up to the point I thought the room would be saturated. But the depth of the sound layers of Hiss Spun is so high that you never see the bottom. I moved to the other side of the house. Diverted from the walls and channeled through the doors, Chelsea Wolfe voice seemed to come from another dimension. To develop itself, music needs space. Especially when its composers claim a physical and mental immersion in it. With the help of Kurt Ballou and Ben Chisholm, Chelsea Wolfe has created a three-dimensional space, able to change according to different listening methods, without losing its charm. Swimming in this ocean that feeds on gothic-industrial and post-metal fascinations, means letting yourself be carried away by the mermaid song of the Californian artist and floating everywhere she decides to take us, like jellyfish adrift in the current. At times it seems to have her beside whispering in one ear (like a sort of Pj Harvey dark side), in other moments we see her reflected and deformed behind a glass of effects and distortions. And even if the guide of our shipwreck is Chelsea Wolfe, it is clear that this music is the result of a collaboration, in the warmth of a rehearsal room cluttered with walls of amplifiers. An old friend on drums (Jess Gowrie) and the trustworthy Ben Chisholm engaged in everything else (in addition, some excellent guests like Aaron Turner and Troy Van Leeuwen). Beyond the waves of distortion and noise generated by the band, there is a sighed voice, a stifled breath. But when this is freed, we are literally engulfed by the chasms that open up before us and lead us into the intimate depths of their author.

Algiers - The Underside of Power

Algiers - The Underside of Power
(Matador, 2017)

The Underside of Power, Cleveland). But I see the light and I see the sea / Despite the future crashing down and closing over me / I got power over all my enemies / Listen to the martyrs cry for me”.

Algiers - The Underside of Power
(Matador, 2017)

After lighting the fuse with their debut album, Algiers show they have no intention of defusing the bomb. Opening their second record, Fred Hampton (historic activist of the Black Panther movement) speech, is a declaration of intent. Do not recede. The battle for civil rights of the African American community is once again fought with explosive aggressiveness, as Franklin James Fisher verses demonstrate, proudly flaunting his origins with through the depth of the most passionate gospels and soul music. The thirst for justice is what fuels the 12 songs, capable of hurting even with velvet gloves, and not just with knuckledusters. Always abrasive and rusty, guitars are no longer in the forefront as in the 2015 album, but they blend with synths and electronic beats in a multi-layered sound mix, less craggy than in the past, but no less powerful (to the production of album contributed Adrian Utley of Portishead). Algiers personality is more disruptive than ever, both in the most nocturnal tracks (Death March, Mme Rieux) and in those where rhythm becomes a liberating dance (The Underside of Power, Cleveland). An electro-gospel veiled in shadows (like the times in which we are forced to live) in which the band throws an unprecedented light of hope. “But I see the light and I see the sea / Despite the future crashing down and closing over me / I got power over all my enemies / Listen to the martyrs cry for me”.

Chelsea Wolfe + Hate & Merda – 14.08.2016 – MusicaW Festival (Castellina Marittima, PI)

Chelsea Wolfe + Hate & Merda
14.08.2016 – MusicaW Festival (Castellina Marittima, PI)

Chelsea Wolfe + Hate & Merda
08.14.2016 – MusicaW Festival (Castellina Marittima, PI)

I have been waiting several months for this concert. And exactly tonight it is one of those completely wrong nights, one of those that make you feel all the heaviness of L’eternità di un’estate terribile (in English, The Eternity of a terrible Summer). This is the reason why I manage to listen only to the concerts of the killing duo from Florence and of the dark poetess/priestess (and I apologize to the other two bands – Mars Era and Passed – which I would really have liked to listen to!).

Hate & Merda do not spare anything to the large audience of the small open air theatre in Castellina Marittima. The summa of La Capitale del Male and L’Anno dell’Odio flows on all present with its load of brutality and liberating fury. If a week ago they were the band with the best sounds on the small Benicio’s Stage at Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest, tonight the power of the synergy guitar/drums has gone even beyond and their sound – at the same time rotten and distilled – really was a balm to my ears. Who still does not know them, he must remedy!

As it is proper of the nature of every sorceress – shall she be fairy or witch - Chelsea Wolfe enchants all present and manages to gather around her stage and her voice such a flood of people that would embarrass the piper of Hamelin of the tale by Brothers Grimm. With a set-list focused on her latest amazing album – Abyss – to which are entrusted both the opening and the closing of her concert, the Californian singer-songwriter – supported by her band – fascinates the audience with her dreamlike and heartbreaking, powerful and melodious voice. If on recordings one gets the impression of being in front of a sort of ferrywoman of souls towards obscure and unknown shores, in the live show this feeling is amplified and it really seems that Chelsea Wolfe can lead you – almost hypnotized – wherever she wants. Sounds and voice are flawless for the whole concert: a hour and a quarter single intense emotion.

Sometimes you really need to purify yourself through music. With their opposed forces, Hate & Merda and Chelsea Wolfe were the catharsis I needed tonight.

Chelsea Wolfe - Abyss

Chelsea Wolfe - Abyss
(Sargent House, 2015)

Chelsea Wolfe - Abyss
(Sargent House, 2015)

The awareness of being awake, yet at the same time the inability to exit the oneiric lethargy that prevents the action. This is the abyss painted by Chelsea Wolfe who - as a modern William Blake - ventures into the borderland between dream and reality through heavy experimental music language. Her journey begins with the mammoth distortions of Carrion Flowers: the voice of the Californian singer-songwriter passes through them almost on tiptoe - with apparent fragility, but actually with a typically female determination. In the apocalyptic-industrial strokes reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails and Swans, Chelsea Wolfe plays a role halfway between the dark priestess à la Jarboe and the damned - deeply human - soul in search of a ray of light showing the way out (somehow similar to PJ Harvey). In this balance between the thickest darkness and a feeble romantic warmth lays the grandeur of Chelsea Wolfe fifth album: in the perfect blend of gothic atmospheres, industrial/noise obsessions and nocturnal folk, the whole sustained by Mike Sullivan (Russian Circles) "spiritual" guitar. Abyss deep and stratified sound owes much to John Congleton production, extraordinary in enhancing both the most intimate and acoustic moments (Crazy Love) and those dominated by post metal distortion (Dragged Out). The "sleep paralysis" sung by Chelsea Wolfe is a metaphor for the constant struggle to free themselves from the weight of alienation: will it be possible to wake up from this dream/nightmare?

Algiers – Algiers

Algiers – Algiers
(Matador, 2015)

Algiers – Algiers
(Matador, 2015)

The rebellious push of rock, intrisic to the social aggregating ability of this musical genre, is now taken for dead. In a historical period in which alternative music often seeks entertainment without taking itself too seriously (or on the contrary it takes refuge in fantasy, esotericism or in an intimacy near to existentialism and individualism) the debut of Algiers has got a disruptive impact. Born in Atlanta (now based between New York and London), this trio claims attention to the integration problems between minorities, with special attention to the African-American community (current issue, in light of the continuous conflicts between this last and Police Institutions). In doing this, they interweave the black roots of gospel with the noisy white post punk, the blues attitude with the industrial electronic atmospheres, writing a rabid history of the US, from its origins of racial segregation to the current - unresolved! - conflictuality. A hybrid with a strong personality, in which various ethnic groups and different sensitivities live side by side. Cold noise guitar rattlings, oppressive atmospheres and trip hop rhythms are intertwined with soul-tasted warm vocal harmonies. No illusion of giving rise to a cultural revolution, nor the offering of a chance of conflicts resolution: yet the harmonic coexistence of apparently so distant worlds gives hope in itself.  As well as giving the hope that rock may once again have an impact on society and reality as in its heyday.  No doubt this album has got all the qualities to be a "new beginning."

Bologna Violenta + Cane di Gøya + Valerio Orlandini + J.D. Raudo (La Malora) – 15.04.2016 - No Cage (Prato)

Bologna Violenta + Cane di Gøya + Valerio Orlandini + J.D. Raudo (La Malora) – 15.04.2016 - No Cage (Prato)

Raudo (La Malora) – 04.15.2016 - No Cage (Prato)

Evenings at No Cage are always full of events. This evening, in particular, is really multifaceted and it starts with a book launch.

La Malora, by J.D. Raudo. Homonymous book of the homonymous (it seems a wordplay, but it tells how things really are!) debut album of the band of which he is frontman. It is the extended, complete version of the lyrics of the album, and the author talks about it in a sort of interview with himself (“question and answer youself!”). And he definetely is a good storyteller, because in the end I buy his book and I cannot wait to read it – and I will not tell you anything more because it is not fair to spoiler a book!

Then the proper musical evening. Its leit motiv is the perfect marriage of music and videos, with a vein of anguish/distress/disturbance slithering through the three projects with different declinations.

First of all the whole electronic – and eponymous – project of Valerio Orlandini. Obsessive, repetitive rhythmics, tv programmes audio extracts, sentences well articulated and altered on the microphone, oneiric-alienating soundscapes, cyclic videos on the sheet obscuring the stage – an empty stage, because Valerio Orlandini plays off the stage, right next to the sheet. Halfway between industrial and a gloomy dark ambient, with a bit apocalyptic connotations, his show excites my curiosity and leaves me a desire of getting deeper into it.

The sheet remains there. But this time the band – three elements – is beyond it, still off the stage. Their silhouettes-shadows appear only at times, mixing together with a selection of movies outtakes and images, especially from Antichrist, by Lars Von Trier. Cane di Gøya immediately catch me, because their post-core/post-rock brings me back of more than a decade, and I find in them the power and beauty of Ornaments and Vanessa Van Basten, yet enriched by synths and filtered through the music born in these last ten years. New – brand new – project. I hope I am going to hear again about them, as well as I hope that an EP or an album in in the works.

Dulcis in fundo – even if it is not so appropriate to talk about “sweetness” - Bologna Violenta. No more one man band, yet super-powerful and fierce duo, placed tête-à-tête with drummer Alessandro Vagnoni, Nicola Manzan opens his devastating set with the just released Discordia, then followed by songs of his other albums, especially Uno Bianca and Il Nuovissimo Mondo. The furious musical tale – blending together grind, hardcore, orchestral music and “à la Fantomas” deliria – is enhanced by (violently hallucinating) videos on the background of the stage. The effect is annihilating and stunning: you lose your external reference points and you are catched in a vortex of sounds and images, saturating the stage, the audience, the whole venue.  Music apart (because in one case we are in front of a paralizing immobility, in the other one we are knockout by an unrestrained hyper-kinetism), it comes to my mind Sunn O))) concert at La Flog (Firenze) in 2006, when Stephen O’Malley & friends, enriched by the almost shamanic presence of Xasthur, made me feel a sense of void and vertigo. By the way, talking of “concert” is reductive. This is an audio-visual and sensorial experience, through which Manzan’s cleverness and eclecticism lead the audience to look into an abyss which is at the same time dangerously magnetizing and repulsing. What fascinates on records catches and possesses in the live show. To be repeated.

Lili Refrain + OvO + Bruxurum/Mercolady/Computer Doll – 27.03.2016 - No Cage (Prato)

Lili Refrain + OvO + Bruxurum/Mercolady/Computer Doll – 27.03.2016 - No Cage (Prato)

Lili Refrain + OvO + Bruxurum/Mercolady/Computer Doll – 03.27.2016 - No Cage (Prato)

After Easter lunch at grandma’s house I need a light dinner: made of spiritual and dreamlike music, to be savored with closed eyes. Nothing better than Lili Refrain’ concert. However, being greedy, I cannot deny a taste of OvO.

The appetizer is offered by the three members of Solki (Bruxurum/Mercolady/Computer Doll), serving a very charming electronic dark ambient, with Serena’s voice moving unpredictably in the dark atmospheric fog, supported by a few sparse beat. Only 20 minutes: yet they deserve to be developed into a full-time project, because the premises are really tasty.

I deviate from my commitment (a light dinner) in front of the monstrous heaviness of OvO distortion. The two "cavemen" shake the base of No Cage with frightening strokes, corroding the iron bars of reinforced concrete with dissonances and feedbacks exasperated up to their brink. The Easter surprise hiding in their shell is a palpable discomfort that I taste with perverse enthusiasm. As much disturbing as exciting, they create essential (but always dynamic) rhythms on which a guitar played with a piece of plastic and a repulsive female voice derail. Just a taste of OvO to feel nausea and dizziness. So amazing!

Vanished the carpet of nails layed by OvO music on the floor of No Cage, Lili Refrain - with her dark magnetism -  puts the audience sitting down (in the true sense of the word). All silent, stunned by the ceremony officiated by the priestess. A ceremony that is hypnosis, enchantment and magic, but also fun. Lili enjoys herself interacting with the people present at her concert, making everybody a part of her show – a show which is never confined to the isolated environment of the stage. We are all part of the spiral created by her guitar licks, a spiral with psychedelic and mysterious flavour that makes you lose time-space coordinates. There is energy - sometimes bright, sometimes dark - in her beautiful voice playing with its own echoes. A constant recalling of layered melodies (played live and looped), of cosmic drones coming from different galaxies, of diabolic and angelic atmospheres, of overlapping voices as those of an imaginary choir. A continuous recalling between her and the audience. What better ceremony to sanctify Easter!

It is difficult to express in a few words impressions and feelings aroused by the Einstürzende Neubauten concert…they are so many and so variegated! This happens also because Lament – the concept album performed in its entirety of non-disassemblable opus – can not be described by a single adjective as much as the performing of some excerpts makes impossible to appreciate its value and meaning.
Magnificent. Its manifold and multiform instrumentation, its 5 members, the classic quintet supporting and enriching the show, the rodies (fundamentals!) running back and forth from the centre to the sides of the stage bringing-moving-assembling-dismanteling all the different pieces at the right moment.
Ambitious. The central theme of this concept – the First World War – tackled and discussed through reconstructions, suggestions and recordings, densely woven together in a complex pattern that perfectly mirrors that conflict.
Masterly. Sounds, lights, composition, perfect balance of contrasts, seamless theatrical narration that makes the 75 minutes of the opus literally fly away.
Emotional. First of all, the music itself. Then Blixa Bargeld voice. And climaxes of some parts of the composition. The subject of the concept album. The continuous evoked impressions and suggestions.
I bought my ticket just a week before this event: if i had not attended this Einstürzende Neubauten concert, I would have missed such an intense and rare musical – artistic! – performance that I would have regretted forever.
