1990. A Selection of 20 Albums.

1990. L'anno in cui i Sonic Youth aprono una crepa. Attraverso quella crepa la musica indipendente si avventura in un universo fino a quel momento sconosciuto. Prima che questa ferita faccia crollare il muro di separazione tra i due mondi, c'è il 1990. Un anno simbolo. Cesura fra due decenni tanto importanti, quanto diversi. Anche musicalmente. Nell'anno che fa da spartiacque con la sua cifra bella tonda, il confine fra i vari generi è davvero labile. Questi sono solo venti fra i molti album significativi usciti in questo millesimo. Come sempre sono stati scelti fra quelli che abbiamo e che abbiamo maggiormente ascoltato. E come si usa chiudere le serie, anche questa è aperta al classico finale: "to be continued..."

1990. The year Sonic Youth open up a crack. Through that crack independent music ventures into a universe unknown until then. 1990 is there, right before this wound leads to the collapse of the separation wall between the two worlds. A symbolic year. Break between two decades as much important as much different. Also musically. In the year that acts as a watershed with its beautiful round figure, the boundary between the various genres is really evanescent. These are just twenty of the many significant albums released in this year. As always, they were chosen from those we own and that we have listened to up to the point of wearing them out. And as series are usually closed by their authors, this is also open to the classic close: "to be continued..."

Estate 1990. In un seminterrato di Brooklyn i tre membri dei Codeine registrano l’album di debutto. Da quello scantinato nasce una musica desolata, disillusa, stanca. Fiacca il respiro come l’afa estiva, isola e avvolge come la nebbia autunnale, ipnotizza come le luci della metropoli osservate dal finestrino di un’auto che corre sulla strada bagnata. Intimo e ipnotico, scivola a ritmo lentissimo nel vuoto di una solitudine che non ha alternative. Un noise rock caratterizzato da arpeggi delicatamente dissonanti, rintocchi ritmici al rallentatore e avvolgenti squarci di distorsione. Nichilista e stanco, Frigid Stars è un baratro verso il quale si è fatalmente attratti. A momenti intimo, a momenti epico. Mai eccessivamente enfatico. Esistenziale e catartico, nella sua semplicità Frigid Stars è originale e unico come certi dischi di Neil Young e Nick Drake. Nonché fonte di ispirazione per tutti i gruppi che negli anni a seguire si sono ammantati del titolo slowcore o post rock - dai Low ai Mogwai, dai Bark Psychosis ai Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Summer of 1990. In a Brooklyn basement Codeine record their debut album. From that basement a desolate, disillusioned, jaded music comes out.  It takes your breath away as summer sultriness, it isolates and envelops you as autumn fog, it hypnotizes you as the lights of a metropolis watched through a car window running on a wet road. Intimate and hypnotic, it slides slowly into the void of a loneliness without alternatives. A noise rock with delicate dissonant arpeggios, rhythmic strokes in slow motion and enveloping glimpses of distortion. Nihilistic and tired, Frigid Stars is an abyss towards which the listener is fatally drawn to. Sometimes it sounds intimate, sometimes epic. Never too emphatic. Existential and cathartic, in its simplicity Frigid Stars is original and unique  as certain albums by Neil Young and Nick Drake. And also a source of inspiration for all post rock and slowcore bands - from Low to Mogwai, from Bark Psychosis to Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
