Un po’ come la “truezza” metal, “l’attitudine” hardcore è una di quelle entità mitiche di cui moltissimi parlano, ma che molto probabilmente pochi possono dire di aver visto in atto. Le reali apparizioni di questa “entità” sono eventi rarissimi. Ma adesso possiamo davvero dire di aver assistito ad una sua manifestazione.

L’apparizione avviene in occasione del Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2016, quando una sorta di apocalisse si abbatte su Giavera del Montello proprio la mattina del primo giorno del festival. Classico diluvio universale, con tanto di tromba d’aria che spazza via alcuni alberi e li schianta precisi precisi sul palco principale. La notizia ci raggiunge quando stiamo guidando e siamo giunti a metà strada, a 200 km dalla meta. Palco distrutto, niente corrente elettrica, il concerto che rischia di essere annullato. È a questo punto che si materializza l’attitudine hardcore. I ragazzi dell’organizzazione stravolgono il programma allestendo il concerto al chiuso, all’interno del Benicio Live Gigs. Le bands – Converge in testa - decidono di suonare un doppio set per consentire a tutti di sentirsi il concerto. Una fregatura di portata epica si trasforma quindi in un’occasione unica: due concerti dei Converge nella stessa serata e la possibilità di assistere ad un loro concerto in un luogo davvero minuscolo e intimo. 

Facciamo parte del gruppo di persone che entra per la prima tornata di concerti: braccialetto giallo e inizio h 20:00.

  

Giocano quasi in casa gli Storm{O} e inaugurano davvero alla grande la serata. I brividi di apertura dell’inquietudine di In volo e poi tutta la potenza hardcore del quartetto feltrino. Le canzoni si susseguono ininterrotte, in un unico flusso di musica tirata e parole urlate. Splendido il dissonante muro di suono eretto dalla band. Bellissime in particolare D’istanti e - apice e conclusione del loro concerto - la dilaniante Delle nostre vite appese: il pubblico canta/urla ogni parola e scatta un pogo liberatorio.

Veloce cambio palco, ed è il turno degli Ornaments. Rallenta decisamente la velocità, ma non si attenua la pesantezza. Lasciato un po’ da parte il post core degli inizi, il live di stasera è incentrato sulle nuove sonorità: più rallentate e pachidermiche, si muovono nell’orizzonte del doom e del drone, senza però abbandonare del tutto le melodie eteree di matrice post rock. Ancora una volta gli Ornaments regalano un live intenso - come tutti quelli cui abbiamo assistito dal 2004 ad oggi. 

Ecco poi il momento tanto atteso da tutti i presenti: il live dei Converge. Il Benicio Live Gigs è davvero pieno zeppo e trasuda energia: posso solo immaginare cosa doveva essere aspettare il proprio turno fuori, per il secondo set!!! Prima che l’assalto abbia inizio, Jacob Bannon ringrazia tutti per lo sforzo fatto e per aver mantenuto in piedi – anzi: raddoppiato! – l’evento, e incita il pubblico ad intonare il coro “Ben! Ben! Ben! Ben!” per chiamare al suo posto Ben Koller. Una volta che il batterista è salito sul palco, ecco che il quartetto di Salem travolge tutti i presenti con l’uragano e la furia della propria musica. In pochi secondi si scatena l’apocalisse, e ci ritroviamo sbalzati nelle retrovie. 45 minuti di continui assalti e ripartenze. Non si risparmia su niente. Tantomeno il pubblico, che tra pogo selvaggio e stage diving rischia di abbattere il locale ancor più di quanto abbia fatto la tromba d’aria! La band è incontenibile e se la voce di Bannon – perfetta nel growl - non è sempre graffiante nelle sue parti urlate, viene comunque sostenuta da quella potente di Nate Newton (impeccabile tanto al basso quanto alla voce) e dai cori di Kurt Ballou, la cui chitarra non risparmia sulle distorsioni e sul tiro dei riffs. Dietro e dentro a tutto questo, quello schiacciasassi che è la batteria di Ben Koller. Anche se i suoni rischiano un po’ di ingolfarsi sotto il soffitto del locale (nella zona, retrostante le prime file, dove questo diventa più basso) l’impatto è devastante e la potenza liberata risulta tanto distruttiva quanto catartica. Personale vertice della scaletta la davvero travolgente All We Love We Live Behind: perfetta fusione dell’enorme carica presente su e giù dal palco, esaltata da un unico grande coro a squarciagola. La sensazione è quella di un’incredibile compattezza e monoliticità, unite ad un’umiltà ed uno spirito sinceramente hardcore. Totali.

La chiusura di questo primo set (probabilmente per motivi organizzativi) tocca ai forlivesi Raein. Il loro screamo/post-hardcore alterna parti più serrate e “violente” ad aperture in cui il tiro si allenta e melodia e ritmiche si insinuano in nuovi percorsi, in nuove ricerche sonore, affini al post rock più passionale. Arpeggi dal suono squillante (a tratti un po’ assordante, visto il volume mostruoso) dipingono paesaggi emotivi sui quali urla a perdifiato il cantante. Melodicamente molto affascinanti, non suonano però certamente immediati, considerando la struttura scomposta dei brani. Il pubblico all’interno del locale è un po’ defluito (certo suonare dopo i Converge non è propriamente un compito facile!), ma i Raein non si risparmiano e l’impatto del loro concerto è davvero notevole. 

Il Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2016 ha rischiato di non vedere la luce. Ma l’attitudine e lo spirito delle bands della serata - unite alla grande passione, grinta e capacità degli organizzatori - hanno fatto sì che l’evento si tenesse. Non solo: hanno fatto sì che l’evento diventasse anche qualcosa di unico. Un doppio evento. Un doppio concerto per far sì che tutti godessero della serata, passando dalla verde arena all’aperto al buio del piccolo club. Non sappiamo quante bands avrebbero dato questa disponibilità. Di sicuro l’han fatto Converge, Raein, Ornaments e Storm{O}. E chi era presente a questa serata può davvero dire – senza esagerare – di aver partecipato ad un concerto storico.

Hardcore “attitude” is one of those mythical entities of which many people talk about, yet probably just a few ones really experienced it. The actual appearances of this "entity" are extremely rare events. But now we can truly say that we have witnessed one of its manifestations.

The appearance is at Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2016, when a kind of apocalypse befalls Montello exactly the morning of the first day of the festival. Classic universal flood, complete with a whirlwind that sweeps away some trees, smashing them right upon the main stage. The news reaches us when we are driving and we are halfway, 200 km from the destination. The stage is destroyed, there is no electricity, the concert is likely to be canceled. It is exactly in this moment that the hardcore attitude materializes. The organiser of the event revolutionize the program setting up the show indoor, inside Benicio Live Gigs. The bands – Converge in the first place – decide to play a double set to allow everybody to listen to the concert. An epic rip-off thus turns into a unique opportunity: two concerts of Converge on the same night and the chance to attend one of their concert in a really small and intimate venue.

We are part of those coming in for the first round of concerts: yellow wristband and start at 8:00 p.m.

Playing almost at home Storm{O} usher in the evening in the best way. The opening chills of the disquiet of In volo and then all the hardcore power of the quartet from Feltre. The songs follow one another without interruption, into a single stream of music and shouted words. Amazing the dissonant wall of sound erected by the band. Especially touching D’istanti and – peak and conclusion of their concert - Delle nostre vite appese: all the present sing/scream every single word and then suddenly it is the moment for a liberating mosh.

Quick change on stage and it is time for Ornaments. There is a significant slow down in speed, but heaviness does not dim at all. Set aside the early days post core, tonight show is focused on their new sounds: slower and elephantine, they move within the horizon of doom and drone, but without completely abandoning post rock ethereal melodies. Once again Ornaments play a really intense live - like all those that we have seen since 2004.

Then the moment long awaited by all those present: Converge live show. Benicio Live Gigs is really choke full and exudes energy: I can only imagine what it must have been waiting outside for the second set!!! Before the assault begins, Jacob Bannon thanks everyone for the effort made and for keeping up - or rather: doubled! - the event, and he incites the audience to sing "Ben! Ben! Ben! Ben!” to call Ben Koller in his place. Once the drummer took the stage, the quartet of Salem overwhelms all present with the hurricane and the fury of its own music. Within seconds the apocalypse takes place, and we find ourselves thrown back into the rear. 45 minutes of continuous attacks and counterattacks. Everything is at its highest. Engaged in wild mosh and stage diving, the audience is likely to tear down the venue even more than it did the whirlwind! The band is uncontrollable and if the voice of Bannon - perfect in growl - is not always scratchy in his screamed parts, it is anyway supported by Nate Newton powerful one (flawless both with bass and voice) and by Kurt Ballou (not sparing on guitar distortion and riffs!) choirs. Behind and within all this, the steamroller of Ben Koller drums. Although sounds risk of being a bit engulfed under the ceiling of the venue (in the area behind the front rows where this becomes lower), the impact is devastating and the freed power is as destructive as cathartic. Personal apex of tonight setlis the really overwhelming All We Love We Live Behind: perfect fusion of the incredibly huge energy on and off stage, emphasized by a unique immense chorus sang at the top of everyone’s voice. The feeling is that of something incredibly compact and monolithic, combined with a truly hardcore spirit and humility. AMAZING.

The closure of this first set (probably due to organizational reasons) it is up to Raein, from Forlì. Their screamo/post-hardcore alternates more "violent" quick parts and openings with a loosened pace, with melody and rhythm creeping into new paths and new sound research, near to the most passionate post rock. Sharp sound (at times a little bit deafening because of the monstrous volume) arpeggios paint emotional landscapes on which the singer screams breathlessly. Melodically really fascinating, they are certainly not so immediate, given the sprawling structure of their songs. The audience is a bit flowed out the venue (playing after Converge is not exactly an easy task!), but Raein do not save their energies and the impact of their concert is really impressive.

The Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2016 almost did not see the light. But the attitude of the bands - together with the great passion, determination and ability of the organizers - have ensured that the event took place. Not only: they also made this event something unique. A double event. A double concert to ensure that everyone enjoyed the evening, moving from the green outdoor arena into the dark small club. We do not know how many bands would have given this availability. Certainly Converge, Raein, Ornaments and Storm {O} gave it. And who was there that night can really say - without exaggeration – he attended a historic concert.

Gli Ornaments sono uno dei segreti meglio custoditi dell’underground italiano. Band di culto grazie all’omonimo EP autoprodotto e ai grandiosi concerti di metà anni 2000, sono poi spariti, inghiottiti dagli impegni dei suoi membri con band maggiormente considerate dalla critica (The Death of Anna Karina). La mancata pubblicazione di un album vero e proprio fino al 2013 non ha consentito loro di superare i confini dell’underground. E’ stranissimo per chi li ha seguiti fin dall’inizio ritrovarsi ad un loro concerto più di 10 anni dopo. In questo lasso di tempo l’universo post rock e post metal è cambiato e la musica della band da rivoluzionaria (il self titled è stato pubblicato contemporaneamente ai grandi dischi di Isis, Pelican e Red Sparowes, e le performance dal vivo erano perfino superiori a quelle di alcuni di questi) è diventata di genere. Resta il fatto che pochi, all’interno del genere, suonino nel 2015 così coinvolgenti ed emozionanti. Dal vivo i suoni sono perfettamente calibrati, e la musica si è evoluta, rispetto al passato, maggiormente in direzione doom, senza perdere la nostalgica malinconia del post rock. Nostalgica malinconia è quello che si prova ascoltandoli adesso, insieme ad un senso di liberazione e speranza, perché la musica del gruppo (come dimostra il recente split con gli Zeus!) è viva e vegeta e non si è persa nell’oblio del tempo.

Dopo il concerto degli Ornaments, il math rock con sfuriate grind degli Zeus! appare divertente ma non lascia il segno. La band è un ciclone di energia e si diverte a scomporre in frammenti la violenza dell’hardcore più estremo, avvicinandosi alle ritmiche folli e circonvolute di Zu e Lightning Bolt. Sarà per la mancanza di una base noise che renderebbe la loro proposta più delirante e interessante o, molto più probabilmente, sarà per la straordinaria performance degli Ornaments prima di loro, fatto sta che gli Zeus! non stupiscono quanto vorrebbero. Anche quando le due band si scambiano i ruoli, suonando l’una nello stile dell’altra, il risultato evidenzia soprattutto le grandi capacità creative degli Ornaments, che si confermano band di livello decisamente superiore a quello riconosciutole dalla critica in tutti questi anni.

 Ornaments + Zeus! – 06.13.2015 – Cycle Club, Calenzano (FI)

Ornaments are one of the best hidden secrets of Italian underground music. Cult band thanks to the omonymous self produced EP and the amazing concerts of the half 00’s, they disappeared from the scene because of the deep involvement of its members in other bands which had a more consistent critical acclaim in those years (see The Death of Anna Karina). Not having published a full-lenght until 2013, unfortunately they did not emerge from the underground. Attending their concert more than 10 years after their debut is something really strange for someone who knows and follows the band from its very beginning. In the meantime post rock and post metal universe has been changing a lot and Ornaments music has changed from revolutionary (the self titled Ep came out together with the most important albums by Isis, Pelican and Red Sparowes, and their lives were even superior to those of some of these great bands) to ordinary in its genre. Anyway, what is undeniable is that they are one of those few bands of the genre still capable to play enthralling and exciting even in 2015. Live sounds are perfectly balanced, and music has evolved towards doom, without loosing post rock nostalgic melancholy. And nostalgic melancholy – together with a sense of hope and relief - is what one feels listening to them now: because their music is well alive and not lost in time oblivion…and the recent split with Zeus! is proof of this!

After Ornaments gig, Zeus! math rock with its grind outbursts sounds funny but leaves no sign. The band is a cyclone of energy and enjoies itself in breaking extreme hardcore violence into fragments, approaching to the crazy and convoluted rhythmic of Zu and Lightning Bolt. It can be due to the lack of a consistent noise base capable to make their music more delirious and interesting or – most likely! –it can be due to the Ornaments extraordinary performance…the fact is that Zeus! do not amaze and astonish as much as they would like to. Even when the two bands exchange roles – playing the one in the style of the other – the result shows the great creative abilities of Ornaments, which proves to be of such a definitely higher level than that recognized by critics in all these years.
