Mike Patton Mondo Cane – 31.08.2019 – Piazza Duomo (Prato)

Mike Patton Mondo Cane – 31.08.2019 – Piazza Duomo (Prato)

Mike Patton ti prende per il culo. Da sempre. Nei primi anni '90 non lo sopportavo. Non mi capacitavo di come Digging the Grave e Squeeze me Macaroni fossero cantate dalla stessa persona.

Mike Patton Mondo Cane – 08.31.2019 – Piazza Duomo (Prato)

Mike Patton takes the piss out of you. Always. In the early 90s I couldn't stand it. I couldn't understand how Digging the Grave and Squeeze me Macaroni were sung by the same person. I was a "metallaro del cazzo": touchy and with little sense of irony. Then I learned to play his game, and I started having fun in front of almost all the masks he sewed on himself. I particularly love the 50s/60s Italian-American "wheeler-dealer". Perhaps because it is a natural disguise. So natural that it doesn't even look like a disguise. Tonight he proposes it again, more than ten years after his first appearance in Italian theaters (and after nine from Mondo Cane, with which he honoured the Italian pop music of the past). And maybe, given the years passing by, the result exceeds the already very high expectations. Yes, because there is nothing more ambiguous of a fifty year old fixer with his "tummy" under the jacket, and a bit plumpy face beyond the glasses. A fifty-year-old man who does not seem to be in perfect physical shape, but who is brilliant and funny with his audience, like an experienced cruise ship piano bar entertainer. The cynical humor, with which he takes the piss out of his role (in addition to those present), is pure Dadaist Pattonism that desecrates itself too. After a few years away from our country, his Italian is a bit limping and the pronunciation absurdly funny: a sort of drunken Primitives' Mal (honored with Yeeeeeh!, known to the national-popular audience as "I tuoi occhi sono fari abbaglianti e io ci sono davanti"). Even some lyrics turn into strange trills, which some purists of Italian pop music might consider a snub. In this work of demolition (but also of convinced homage) of the charm of the Latin lover, in favour of a parody of the Italian more and more distant from Gian Maria Volontè and closer and closer to Tomas Milian, Patton gives us one of his best concerts among the many which I attended. His voice is amazing, warm and powerful, and he manages to release at the same time energy and romanticism, but always with his typical irony. The passionate emphasis of the songs by Modugno, Buscaglione, Tenco, Mina and the other historical names of Italian music comes to life also thanks to the orchestra of the Camerata Strumentale "Città di Prato" and to Vincenzo Vasi theremin, both of them as much fundamental as Mike Patton voice to recreate the atmosphere of another era. And when it all seems to be over, Mr Bungle's Retrovertigo shows us how the road between the post-war Peninsula and America imagined by Patton in the 90s is less long than we imagined. With the hope that it can again be crossed by Mike's creativity.

Kaada/Patton - Bacteria Cult

Kaada/Patton - Bacteria Cult
(Ipecac Recordings, 2016)

Kaada/Patton - Bacteria Cult
(Ipecac Recordings, 2016)

If there is a rock musician who has always conceived his music as a soundtrack to an imaginary film, this is Mike Patton. His love for 60s-70s giallo-horror-poliziottesco-western cinema has led him to deconstruct and reconstruct rock through always unpredictable ways, yet it is especially in some projects (as in his collaboration with the Norwegian composer John Erik Kaada) that Patton refers to movies explicitly, and not only in a conceptual attitude. The relationship between the two comes back to life after years in which Patton has actually experienced in the field of soundtracks and the result of this reborn partnership is linked to the works of the great composers devoted to the seventh art (Morricone in particular) with even more evidence than in past. Bacteria Cult retraces the road traveled by Romances (Kaada/Patton first album, released in 2004), but it mitigates some of its surreal impulses in order to move towards more subdued and ethereal shores. The refined orchestral arrangements basted by the Norwegian musician are the film on which Patton does not play (for once) the role of the protagonist in the middle of the scene, but that of a seemingly supporting actor (actually fundamental and always present!). We are immersed in the fog of a giallo-noir, with vaguely dreamlike melodies, appearing and disappearing without indicating a direction to follow. Sometimes a beam of light, with an epic pace, seems to be preparing us for the grand finale. But then we find ourselves again disoriented, surrounded by a smoke which hides the plot and transforms the whole album in a Fellinian dream.
