Crystal Fairy - Crystal Fairy

Crystal Fairy – Crystal Fairy
(Ipecac Recordings, 2017)

Crystal Fairy – Crystal Fairy
(Ipecac Recordings, 2017)

With his usual sense of irony, Buzz Osborne says he does not conceive the ones who work only 8 hours a day, throwing the rest of the day into a futile hobby. Although this is one of his typical mockery, it is undeniable that Buzz is an incredible workaholic. Sooner or later his path has to cross with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez's one, one of the few people who can keep up with him. This collaboration requires other hyper musicians, aware of the work pace imposed by the two bushy heads. Here Dale Crover and Teri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes) come into the production line. On a record in which Omar plays the bass as a guitar, the two Melvins grind as a steamroller and Teri screams like a mad neurotic, it is clear that these four are not simple workers of the alternative rock world forced to clock in. The passion for their job is perceived thanks to the energy flowing uncontrollable from any crack in the structure of the songs, which - however direct and explosive - are unable to contain the energy of these musicians and constantly sound in balance between tension and explosion. Particularly, Teri's lunatic mood is a perfect representation of these contrasts, and under the hysterical riott grrrl dress, she actually conceals a perverse sensual (almost dark) side, as well as a luciferin version of Robert Plant. The melodies, whose unpredictability is mainly due to Teri, have that hallucinogenic flavour that is felt in the midst of dreams (or nightmares); massive and heavy riffs own the power of Melvins of Houdini and Stoner Witch era. Working so much keeps young. Well, as a job, you do the rocker.

Dead Cross - Dead Cross

Dead Cross - Dead Cross
(Ipecac Recordings, Three One G, 2017)

Dead Cross - Dead Cross
(Ipecac Recordings, Three One G, 2017)

Almost at the age of 50, Mike Patton continues to show obvious symptoms of Peter Pan's syndrome, which can now be considered incurable. When his playmate (and Fantômas-mate) Dave Lombardo contacted him to join him in his new toy, Dead Cross, Mike hid his hardcore t-shirts among school books and ran away from home, with his backpack, on a skate. His friend Dave led him down a bad road, introducing him to two playmates heavily addicted to sound violence: Mike Crain and Justin Pearson (the latter also bassist of The Locust). Arrived in the rehearsal room Mike found an already launched toy, with songs already written, but he immediately enjoyed replacing the vocal lines composed by the former singer (Gabe Serbian). So Mike has fallen again into the old habit of ultra heaviness like at the time of his collaboration with Dillinger Escape Plan. The result of this gang is a crazy and ultra-violent album, in which Patton crooked and delirious melodies give a horror movie gloomy atmosphere to a typically splatter chainsaw massacre made of thrash metal angry outbursts and super-rotten hardcore riffs. The plumbee mist  of Bauhaus' Bela Lugosi's Dead is the only moment to "have a breathe" in a record that runs a thousand per hour (extraordinary performance of Lombardo), like a teenage with the DRI t-shirt on a skate. If age does not allow Patton big tricks on the skateboard (as his recent skate accident shows), this does not affect his "artistic youth", which is worthy of a teen full with hormones. Mike is the perfect playmate for Dead Cross, who had fun composing crazy, fast-paced and exalting music.

Kaada/Patton - Bacteria Cult

Kaada/Patton - Bacteria Cult
(Ipecac Recordings, 2016)

Kaada/Patton - Bacteria Cult
(Ipecac Recordings, 2016)

If there is a rock musician who has always conceived his music as a soundtrack to an imaginary film, this is Mike Patton. His love for 60s-70s giallo-horror-poliziottesco-western cinema has led him to deconstruct and reconstruct rock through always unpredictable ways, yet it is especially in some projects (as in his collaboration with the Norwegian composer John Erik Kaada) that Patton refers to movies explicitly, and not only in a conceptual attitude. The relationship between the two comes back to life after years in which Patton has actually experienced in the field of soundtracks and the result of this reborn partnership is linked to the works of the great composers devoted to the seventh art (Morricone in particular) with even more evidence than in past. Bacteria Cult retraces the road traveled by Romances (Kaada/Patton first album, released in 2004), but it mitigates some of its surreal impulses in order to move towards more subdued and ethereal shores. The refined orchestral arrangements basted by the Norwegian musician are the film on which Patton does not play (for once) the role of the protagonist in the middle of the scene, but that of a seemingly supporting actor (actually fundamental and always present!). We are immersed in the fog of a giallo-noir, with vaguely dreamlike melodies, appearing and disappearing without indicating a direction to follow. Sometimes a beam of light, with an epic pace, seems to be preparing us for the grand finale. But then we find ourselves again disoriented, surrounded by a smoke which hides the plot and transforms the whole album in a Fellinian dream.

Faith No More - Sol Invictus

Faith No More - Sol Invictus
(Reclamation! Recordings, Ipecac Recordings, 2015)

Matador è per me l’apice.
And that’s all folks! ;)

Faith No More - Sol Invictus
(Reclamation! Recordings, Ipecac Recordings, 2015)

I had been waiting for this album without surrendering to the temptation to listen to it before its official release.
I had been waiting for this album with a mixture of anxiety and superstition, because I do not trust in reunions and I was almost scared of the idea of a reunion of one of my favourite artist with his most famous band.
But the first listening immediately scattered all the shadows, dispelling every doubt.
I had been waiting several months before deciding to write something about this album: I did not want to take the risk to be prey to easy enthusiasm and I did want to really understand how much I like it as I continued to listen to it through time. I did not want to seem an inveterate fan (and I really hope to succeed in this aim, now!).
Two days ago, as I was driving back home saying goodbye to Casentino, as sun was setting covering all mountains and hills with its orange bright light and I was listening to Sol Invictus, I finally realized what I could have written about the latest work of Patton and co.
The title is ambitious, it directly refers to the Undefeated God Sun – something pagan, something ancestral, yet something which even Christianity assimilated and made it its own (let’s think about Christmas, just few days ago) – and maybe in this way it clearly marks the fact that Faith No More are still here with their essence still intact. Undefeated. Stars. Great musicians. After a long break, they simply got together once again to do what they do best: music which is expression of their irreverence, of their being epic, of their melancholic part, of their light-hearted nature, of their irony and – at the same time – of their seriousness.
They would never tell you why they chose that title, and there would never be a “definite” explanation of the meaning of their lyrics. Useless to probe these territories. What really matters is that the 10 songs of Sol Invictus are a collection of the more diverse feelings and emotions, with the final result of a picture that can be penetrated and penetrates the listener with immediacy and extreme ease. In my personal opinion Matador is the apex of this opus. Almost an Innuendo (!) in its suite-like structure, in its alternation of full and empty, in the majesty of its final.
And that’s all folks! ;)
