Roadburn 2018 - Day 1

Roadburn 2018 - Day 1
[Harsh Toke + Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas + Converge + Årabrot + Waste of Space Orchestra]

Oggi è il turno dell'ultimo, stupendo, The Dusk in Us.

Tutto l'album.

Roadburn 2018 - Day 1
[Harsh Toke + Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas + Converge + Årabrot + Waste of Space Orchestra]

The 1,300 km road leading us to Tilburg is completely different from that crossed last year. No snowstorm, no endless queue of trucks. The closer we get to the goal, the more the Sun is dazzling and roads are free. San Diego Takeover has made its effect. Arrived in the Dutch city, we realize that the large space that this year's edition will dedicate to the psychedelic scene of San Diego has changed the climate, making it truly Californian. Only palms and beach are missing. 30 °C are already there.

We seize the legendary wristband, key access essential for the wonders of the next 4 days, and then wee look for a bit of relief in the darkness of the Main Stage at 013. Here we have a long Scandinavian night, lit by aurora borealis.

Indeed, the main stage will be inaugurated by Waste of Space Orchestra: super-combo born from the union of the Finns Oranssi Pazuzu and Dark Buddha Rising. And to immediately dispel any doubt, it must be said that the union of the two bands is not a simple sum of the parts, but a really third and strengthened entity. It oscillates between dark heaviness and lights that range from the depths of black holes to the dazzling glow of incandescent stars. Three voices alternate, powerful and alien (amazing Marko Neuman androgynous one), leading us through the stormy sea of riffs and dissonant phrasings. The crew is composed of ten musicians (two drums and two keyboards), a sort of Crimsonian vessel dispersed in a frozen sea. A project specifically created for this festival (and for which amazing videoclips have been created) that involves lovers of the most experimental sounds, leaving hope in a live record of this unprecedented (and unforgettable) experience.

Compulsory passage under the sun to go and lock us up in Het Patronaat for Årabrot. The atmosphere of the former church is pervaded by an almost suffocating heat that makes a strange pair with the Norwegian band and its songs born in the long Scandinavian nights, marked with frozen dark atmospheres. Heat sticks on us like the unpleasant feelings emanating from their darkwavish noise rock, and Kjetil Nernes's voice is that of a perverse vicar, soaked with sweat and bad vibes. The first part of the set focuses on the beautiful The Gospel, but it is the second part that convinces even more, thanks to truly incredible compactness and gait. The long almost noise sequence, with a convulsive jam character, closing the last song of the set, is really the acme of this concert.

Our convoy retraces its steps, back to the Main Stage, because it is time of the first of the two Converge concerts. This year Jacob Bannon is the curator of the festival and his band has two shows scheduled, both dedicated to the full performance of one of their albums. Today is the turn of the latest, wonderful, The Dusk in Us. The expectation is high and is fully repaid. The 13 songs flow in front of us and in our ears like a stream of consciousness, interrupted only by the captions of Bannon's words. Compact and violent, yet not without an emotional heart, as songs like the titletrack and Thousand Of Miles Between Us literally move for their touching and vibrant beauty. A unique experience.

But if we are already flying high, the most enthralling moment of the day arrives with Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas performing their Mariner in its entirety. We almost do not believe it. The whole album. With Julie Christmas. One of our most beloved singers since the times of Battle of Mice and Made Out of Babies. And we really had no idea what was waiting for us live. Just as the audience filling the 013 at the highest levels could not expect it, for what was announced as the last chance to listen to this collaboration live (extremely rare event also in the past). Julie Christmas's voice is a true revelation. Powerful, exciting and versatile, in its alternation of hysteria and delicacy. If on albums it is impressive, live it fascinates the listener. Impossible not to be harnessed in the network of schizophrenic melodies she creates and constantly changes, with incredible ease. Cult of Luna prove to be much more mature and consolidated musicians than when we saw them live in 2007, and the result is a futuristic, spatial and apocalyptic post-metal, to say the least, touching. A concert which can really be defined as unique and which leaves the feeling of having witnessed an experience unlikely to be repeated.

There is time to return to Earth and realize that all in all the sky has not yet sunk into the night, San Diego climate is still there, it is still hot, and we still have earthly needs that we feed in the streets of the festival, surrounded by enthusiasts like us, breathing this beautiful atmosphere of absolute relax that for four days suspends space and time.

To continue on this mood, nothing better than closing the evening with Harsh Toke. It's 11:30 pm, but the atmosphere at Het Patronaat is still overheated. San Diego Takeover really brought its long wave and its sunny beaches to Holland. In the last edition the quartet had dedicated its set to Roky Erickson and made us relive all the beauty and intensity of the psychedelia of the past. This year there are their songs, but the essence does not change. The four drag you on board their space skateboard and do everything to never get you off. Indeed, enraptured by the bass ride of Light Up and Live and with the mind twisted around the guitar solos, you would never really want to go down.

How to perfectly end a first day full of the most varied emotions. And it's only the first day!

Harsh Toke / Joy / Sacri Monti - Burnout

Harsh Toke / Joy / Sacri Monti - Burnout
(Tee Pee Records, 2017)

Harsh Toke / Joy / Sacri Monti - Burnout
(Tee Pee Records, 2017)

If in 2017 it still makes sense to talk about "musical scene", San Diego is certainly a perfect example and one of its best incarnations. In an era when remote collaborations and sharings (via internet) are the norm, in the heart of California there is a bunch of friends whose  close relationship has been (and is) the seed for the birth of a real musical movement. The heart of this artistic community is to be found in the lysergic dilations characterizing Earthless - true fathers of the movement - and their music. The psychedelic rides of the historic Californian band were followed by a close-knit group of fellow citizens, who often share the same stage and mix their bands with the same ease with which they mix psychedelic blues solos. Tee Pee Records offers a taste of the atmosphere you can breath in the venues of the Californian city thanks to a split in which three bands, usually dedicated to long visionary jam sessions, enclose their overflowing creativity into two short songs each.
The first psychedelic pills are offered by Harsh Toke melting two Rocky Erickson classics in an ocean of solos and in a rough, powerful, riff-o-rama much closer to the sound of Detroit than to that of San Diego. Those lucky enough to attend their concert in honor of the 13th Floor Elevators singer/guitarist at Roadburn 2017, they already know how much Harsh Toke knows how to be rough and super-groovy, and not just shamans of wild improvisation.
Then Joy: with an original song and a cover of Road (band of Noel Redding, bass player of the Jimi Hendrix Experience) it seems that they want us to enter their rehearsal room, in the middle of a jam session in which hard rock liquefies itself into a colorful cascade of psychedelic solos.
The third 45 rpm is for Sacri Monti, whose music is capable of balancing with progressive sensitivity the soft touch of the organ and the power of the electric guitar, especially in an exciting version of Sleeping for Years by Atomic Rooster.
The debt that the current heavy psych has towards that of the 70s is repaid by this split (just what a pity that Harsh Toke did not insert an original song) in which the three bands from San Diego pay homage to their mentors and at the same time show how explosive the scene of their hometown is.

Earthless/Harsh Toke ‎– Acid Crusher/Mount Swan

Earthless/Harsh Toke ‎– Acid Crusher/Mount Swan
(Tee Pee Records, 2016)

Earthless/Harsh Toke ‎– Acid Crusher/Mount Swan
(Tee Pee Records, 2016)

If you decide to rent a rehearsal room in San Diego, there are high chances that this is in nearby a connecting passage with another dimension. A dimension from which comes a creative force that takes possession of the musicians and pushes them into infinite psychedelic jam sessions. And over there the worshippers of the cult of wild improvisation are really becoming more and more numerous. In this split, Earthless are accompanied on a interstellar journey by their fellow citizens Harsh Toke. The first ones to be sucked into the vortex are Earthless. With a bass line similar to a funky in slow motion, they leave for a quarter-of-an-hour-trip in which guitars wind up and twist in acid blues solos. A journey that could last forever, considering how much engaging and hypnotic it is. Amazing! Harsh Toke, instead, take off with harder heavier - almost Black Sabbath school - riffs. But they too soon leave to the bass the role of spiral staircase down to the deep space. With a gloomy obsessive line upon which guitars indulge in that kind of improvisation so dear to the Grateful Dead, the band draws the dark side of this split. The song takes speed and then slows down again, stretching and deforming, showing an equally fascinating, yet different path from that undertaken by Earthless. Now we just have to find a rehearsal room San Diego close to this magical gate and get lost in relentless improvisations.

Roadburn Festival 2017 - Day 2

Roadburn Festival 2017 – Day 2
[Harsh Toke + Amenra + Chelsea Wolfe + Oathbreaker + Magma + Schammasch]

Ore 14:30.

Come esser stati rapiti dagli alieni.

After the Fall e Carrion Flowers letteralmente da brividi.

Roadburn Festival 2017 – Day 2
[Harsh Toke + Amenra + Chelsea Wolfe + Oathbreaker + Magma + Schammasch]

2:30 p.m. The bell rings the beginning of the mass. At Het Patronaat an unconventional religious ceremony takes place. The mist fills the room up to the top of the high wooden ceiling, while the shadows on the stage give rise to a dissonant deviated post-black metal, with a complex majestic architecture. Schammasch will feature the longest concert of the entire festival (1h 50min), entirely dedicated to the just released triple album (Triangle). In the meantine on the Main Stage one of our most awaited bands is about to play, so we only experience 40 minutes of music of the Swiss band, exactly the duration of the first part (The Process of Dying) of their ambitious opera. A really substantial taste, which gives the measure of the extraordinary nature of this band, sort of Deathspell Omega even more conceptual. Rotten, bad and magnificent. To deepen!

The stairs behind the Main Stage mixer are our choice to enjoy the complicated and absurd music coming from the Kobaïa planet. After a journey of several light years, the 8 aliens gathered under the name of Magma landed right in the heart of Holland for a concert focused on their 1973 masterpiece Mekanik Destruktif Kommandöh. It is not easy to describe the event we are witnessing: on a fanciful crazy musical plot, stunning choirs and vocal harmonies (in a completely invented language) tell the story of a prophet come to alert the terrestrials of the imminent end of their planet. At times symphonic, cosmic and "mystic"  in some passages, often liquid and changing as fusion jazz under acid enchanting all the audience with its progressive lysergic visions. For us the apex is the voice solo of drummer Christian Vander, the true soul of the band as well as phenomenal musician. How to be abducted by aliens.

Still stunned by the hust ended intergalactic journey, we try to get into the Extase to return to planet Earth with Ruby the Hatchet. Unfortunately we are not as lucky as the day before with Pinkish Black: the tiny venue (maximum capacity 250 people) gets packed just in front of our eyes, and we remain one step from the entrance while the band attacks the first riff. Deluded, we return to the Main Stage to attend Oathbreakers. The Belgian band concert, although a second choice, turns out to be an extraordinary surprise. On the opening notes, Caro Tanghe enchants us with her dreamlike sighed voice before revealing her "desperate" part, with the rest of the band launching into a violent assault of post black metal similar to Deafheaven but even more intense, powerful and fascinating. A compact wall of post hardcore and post rock melodies on which the ultra pissed off singer voice stands out, at times reminiscent of Julie Christmas. Great discovery!

Then we go down in the first rows to swim through the notes of Chelsea Wolfe, with clear in mind her extraordinary concert at Musica W 2016. In the heat of the Tuscan hills, in August, she enchanted us. In the dark of the main stage of a festival in the windy northern Europe, she conquers our hearts once again, confirming all her talent. A touching voice, of great intensity, and a magically dark music, in which we get lost. Between industrial assaults and post metal riffs, sinuous dark melodies - mainly from the beautiful Abyss. After the Fall and Carrion Flowers literally touching.

No time to breathe. After a great concert there is always a bigger one. Amenra on the Main Stage. The hall is full beyond belief, the expectation for their concert is palpable. Their apocalypse is cathartic and liberating. They prove to be worthy heirs of Neurosis, letting the anger spin away through Colin H. van Eeckhout striking, typically hardcore voice. The band launches heavy boulders of distortion raising emotional waves in the audience, and they do it with the same naturalness of throwing stones into the water to look at the concentric waves on the surface.. Even the Ahab members - right next to us - seem to be amazed by the intensity generated by the Belgian band. On a day full of memorable concerts, Amenra could win the title of best live performance of the day even without the participation of Scott Kelly and John Dyer Baizley. Well, these special guests take away any doubt. Unforgettable.

Fully satisfied by the Amenra assault, we go outdoors to recover and take more and more consciousness of the wonderland in which we are. An entire area of a university town completely invaded by a black-dressed community, relaxed at a coffee table or packed in a dark room where one of the many (simultaneous) concerts of the festival is taking place. While Baroness are playing on the Main Stage, we decide to go back into the darkness of a music hall, thinking that most of the audience is listening to John Dyer Baizley and associates. So we approach Het Patronaat 20 minutes in advance of the scheduled start time for Zeal & Ardor concert. But the hype anticipating their concert is as giant as the row in front of the venue. After 20 minutes and with the front door still far away, we decide to desist - for the second time in the same day - a bit disappointed of the fact that in order to keep the "cult status" of the concert of certain bands, these ones have to play in venues which are ultimately underestimated with respect to the real interest generated by them.

We just have to rest while waiting for the last band. We enter the Green Room (at 013) for the first time for Harsh Toke concert, when midnight is gone. After a day of post-apocalyptic concerts, the perfect closure is the psych rock of the San Diego band, which dedicates this set to Roky Erickson music. Uncontainable and unstoppable energy (not only does the concert begin in advance, but it continues well beyond the expected time!) that has the fluid form of a lysergic jam, rich in solos as well as in groove. Marijuana clouds, sweat, rock n'roll and no restraint. Funny and entertaining, they consume the last energies of the audience (no coincidence that my ultra-doped neighbour collapses on a couple of occasions and on the third one he need for security to brings him out). We leave the 013 with Rock And Roll All Nite refrain in mind: we really would like concerts never end!
