Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2017 – Day 3

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2017 – Day 3
Tau Cross + Macabre + Birds in Row + Marnero + Zeit + Mercy Ties + Restos Humanos

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2017 – Day 3
Tau Cross + Macabre + Birds in Row + Marnero + Zeit + Mercy Ties + Restos Humanos
08.06.2017 - Giavera del Montello (TV)

What a DYI would be without a tornado and a flood? At least one day must be "damaged" by bad weather in line with tradition. That the day is turning to the apocalypse is clear when, in the midst of the lunch at Birrificio Pedavena in Feltre, a monstrous wind raises a dust storm, and before it starts to rain, all the customers of the brewery (including the two of us!) commit to hold the tent over their heads so that this is not wiped away. More or less at the same time, the same film is on stage at Giavera del Montello. Mindful of last year's disaster, the festival organizers decide to run right away to shelter, moving all the scheduled concerts indoor, inside Benicio Live Gigs.

We enter on the first notes of Restos Humanos. The trio plays an old school death metal, crude and malicious, with some hint of raw grindcore. Perhaps we are misled by the singer's geographical origin (Colombia). Or perhaps the dirty perverse violence typical of South American death metal is really present in their music. Anyway, really not bad as an appetizer!
Meanwhile, the Sun shines out, almost as if it was making fun of the precautions taken by the organizers. But who knows weather instability of Montello, he knows that one can never declare victory.

Mercy Ties, which were expected to be opener of this last day, get on the stage as second band, due to the bad weather causing them a delay while on the road to the venue. Their post hardcore is characterized by sudden accelerations and continuous changes of direction, almost in math rock style. Hypercinetics, not only musically, but also from the point of view of their attitude, jump and pace up and down continuously, without any intention of keeping inside themselves their energy. At times, this ongoing demonstration of "energy incontinence" seems a little forced, but musically they really are a hurricane.

The Venetian Zeit insert vocal lines of death metal roots in a musical context similar to the most nervous post hardcore. The coordinates are similar to those of the previous band, but the whole sounds more calibrated, balanced and straightforward, less unpredictable and imaginative. Really effective.
In the meantime, distros have been re-set up in the outdoor area, hoping the bad weather is really gone away. But the black clouds approaching say the opposite, and indeed...

As Marnero are about to play, the first drops begin to fall, and within thirty seconds all the audience is inside the venue. Here is the sound of Malora. First riff, and the storm (so many times told by the band from Bologna in its lyrics) rages. Thunders, lightnings and flood outside. Thunders, lightnings and musical flood inside. The power of the songs by JD Raudo & co is not just in the tubes of their amplifiers and in their riffs overwhelming the listener. Their power is also in their words and in that vein of melody running through their songs, and that can only shake you in. Also their new track is beautiful. And when they come to the end of the set, Malora flies away and the clear returns as if the storm was part of the concert. Amazing.

And so it is the time of the French Birds in Row. Their concert is loud, fast and violent. They play more or less half hour, but in that half hour they concentrate, compress and release a really awesome fury, energy and skill. There is all the essence of hardcore, but also many flashes out of the box, opening to spaces of breath and melody, opposed to convulsive nervous rhythms. Really impressive.

The passage to the Macabre is a bit abrupt and flooring. The most amazing thing about this Chicago trio is the irrepressible desire to be on that stage (as well as any other stage, you would say!) and the enviable - and not at all to be taken for granted - understanding and synergy. 32 years of career together, with no change in the line up, are something almost unique, as it is their style in a certain sense, inserting the most unlikely influences on a fundamentally thrash metal basis. Black humor and assorted absurdities! Beyond the purely musical side, it's impossible not to have fun with them, who rejoice the enthusiasm of the fist of fans singing all the songs of the setlist and who - loudly acclaimed - also play an encore (they were looking forward to play!).

After the usual vegan dinner, it's time for Tau Cross. The expectation for this band was high, and this is probably the reason why we are not so satisfied in the end. The high technical level of the band is undeniable. And certainly in their music they try to blend the different backgrounds of the members (among these Away - Voivod - and Rob Miller - Amebix). But our impression is that the sum of the parts does not exceed the value of the individual components. Indeed, the combo published by the famous Relapse proposes a rather classic metal, with some variations on the theme related to the stratification of personal influences, tendentially in post-punk and industrial direction. Furthermore, in our view, the choice of ultra-compressed sounds tend to penalize even the enjoyment of the most successful parts. On top of everything stands the voice of Rob (The Baron) Miller, which is perhaps the most distinctive feature of the band. We admit that we feel a bit disappointed, because Tau Cross were certainly one of the bands we were most curious about in this DYI edition.

Thus it ends this three days in Montello. Rich in heat and sweat, but also splashed by a half storm. Rich and heterogeneous in the bands, with many confirmations, a half disappointment and many interesting discoveries. The balance is positive and, if good things come in three, we are looking forward to the next edition bill!

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest – Day 2

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest – Day 2
Crowbar + Cough + ['selvǝ] + Hungry Like Rakovitz + Die Abete

Sull’altro palco iniziano a ruota i Crowbar. Barbe lunghe, panzone sudate, riff massicci e atmosfere alcoliche. Kirk libera le corde vocali con continui scatarri, e riparte ogni volta verso nuove canzoni, sempre in puro e genuino stile sludge metal made in New Orleans. Headbanging e birra, what else?!

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest – Day 2
Crowbar + Cough + ['selvǝ] + Hungry Like Rakovitz + Die Abete
08.05.2017 - Giavera del Montello (TV)

The second day of the festival promises to be much more intense than the first, with beginning scheduled for 6 p.m.. In the hottest summer in memory of man, the only salvation is the shade offered by distro booths and cool beer.

Indeed I listen to the first band, Die Abete, in the shade of a stand. Kissed by the burning Sun, the band with two drums (one of which is played only in certain songs) launches itself into a passionate screamo/post hardcore, focusing on broken rhythms and noise dissonances rather than on its emotional side. There is no lack of viscerality and sweat (not just for blast furnace temperature) in the music of this band from Terni. The cover of “Ragazzo di strada” in post-hardcore style is a really funny and perfectly comfortable surprise in the punk context of their concert. To delve deeper!

On main stage, in the shadow of the few trees survived to the storm of last year, is the time for Hungry Like Rakovitz, from Bergamo. Their one is a brutal and devastating assault. An enraged mincer in which hardcore and extreme metal are mixed together. Powerful sounds - full of thundering bassess (Sunn head) - transform also those more black metal passages in a sort of ultra-speedy sludge. The singer down among the audience to share his fury, while on stage the rest of the band create a personal vision of the Apocalypse.

The Sun continues to make red-hot the small stage area, where ['selvǝ] are ready to play. The Lombard band wants to carry us in the autumn woods with its emotional and engaging post black metal, always extremely tight (outstanding the hardcore component) and never exaggeratedly melodic. Once the drum sounds are set (initially someway suffocated by the distortion wall of the guitar), music starts to take off and I feel literally enraptured by this band, both majestic and introspective.

After the classic vegan dinner I place myself in the first rows in front of the small stage, for Cough concert. The Sun begins to set, and the American band (after retrieving their keyboard player who had gone out to get beer) makes it fall into the horizon with a terrific lavish flow of cosmic doom. I am astonished by their mastodontic sounds. Defining them immense is reductive, considering how they can fill the air of the Montello hills with a balanced range of frequencies, swelling your stomach and rising up your hair. I lose myself in the hyper-slowed, extremely heavy and hypnotic rhythms, as well as inside the drones of keyboard fused with those of guitar and bass, and in the end I remain entangled in the smelly mud produced by the band. Riff after riff, feedback after feedback, the night arrives and the band ends the concert in the dark without a reflector. Amazing! On album they do not show the real value of their potential (and their power!). Seeing is believing!

On the other stage is already time for Crowbar. Long beards, sweaty potbellies, massive riffs and alcoholic atmospheres. Kirk Windstein band is a trailer truck inexorably advancing, leaving behind a stench of diesel. The pilot has a dirty and powerful voice, always at full speed. Kirk frees his vocal chords continuously spitting out, and he restarts each time singing new songs, always in pure and genuine sludge metal style made in New Orleans. Big fat music, enhanced by powerful warm sounds (much richer and less compressed than when I saw them at Desertfest London). For me this is the grand finale of the evening. Headbanging and beer, what else?!

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2017 – Day 1

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2017 – Day 1
Ufomammut + Doom + The Mild

Heavy psychedelic music, made in Italy. DOCG.

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2017 – Day 1
Ufomammut + Doom + The Mild
08.04.2017 - Giavera del Montello (TV)

I am a loyal customer. When I like a festival - both for the music and the atmosphere - it's always a pleasure to come back. One year after the whirlwind that forced Converge to play 2 sets in the same evening to guarantee all the participants to attend their concert (moved indoor after the collapse of several trees had destroyed the stage) here I am again, among the gorgeous Montello hills.

The first day starts from the small stage (and who remembers the emergency stage set up last year, forget about it: this year also this one is a proper stage!) and the music of The Mild. Every festival you respect must open with the bang. And the young Venetian band is the right bang. Their music is a evil sick sludge of Eyehategod school, alternating hardcore at full-speed and post-metal boulders, without disdaining feedbacks and dissonances. Great discovery! There could be no better start!

Vegan dinner and then again in front of the small stage for Doom. With its typically hardcore assaults, the historical name of the roughest and muddiest crust punk immediately triggers a violent mosh. If the first band was astonishing for the devastating youthful strength of its music, the British veterans sounds engulfed and suffocated instead. Despite the speed, everything sounds gunky and bogged. For those who (like me) come from the sharp and calibrated metal violence, it sounds weird to hear a drummer who, while going fast, does not destroy the drums at every turn - or a guitarist who does not have the attack that can break eardrums at every riff. Yet the charm of Doom lies in that horrible feeling of being drunk in the midst of a fight with the police, with retchings in the mouth. Thanks to the guttural voice, the nasty sounds and the d-beat rhythms that induce to push with the neighbor who quietly drinks a beer giving a fuck of the rest. Pure anarchy.

And after doom as a name, doom in fact. Ufomammut on the main stage. The audience, numerous and passionate,is the proof that the band from Tortona has finally gained in Italy the success reached abroad years ago. With sounds initially not perfectly calibrated, the cosmic doom of the trio takes a few minutes to reveal itself throughout its psychedelic power. But in the second part of the show we are abducted by their interstellar blows. And my astrophysical theory gets confirmed: when the "mammoth" component (riffs) is more prominent than the "ufo"  one (psychedelic visions), pleasure increases! At the top of the space trip, the spaceship collapses. The power goes out. It's like waking up with a start. Stunned we all wait for the rest of the show. Grand finale with rain of meteorites, cosmic lightnings and storms of distortions. Heavy psychedelic music, made in Italy. DOCG.

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest – Day 2 – OvO + Bologna Violenta + Slander + Hate & Merda + BRUUNO + Mai Mai Mai – 06.08.2016 – Giavera del Montello (TV)

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest – Day 2
OvO + Bologna Violenta + Slander + Hate & Merda + BRUUNO + Mai Mai Mai

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest – Day 2
OvO + Bologna Violenta + Slander + Hate & Merda + BRUUNO + Mai Mai Mai
08.06.2016 – Giavera del Montello (TV)

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest hasn’t got a particularly bright side, yet for sure it has got a particularly dark one. This side reveals itself on the second day of festival, on Benicio’s Stage - the tiny stage dedicated to the most experimental sounds. After the storm of the previous day, the outdoor area becomes fully functional (both the main stage - the Disintegrate Arena - and the small one) thanks to the incredible work of the event organizers.

It’s 6:00 p.m. The sun is still high in the sky and Mai Mai Mai begins his performance. Hooded, the Calabrian musician creates a magma of noises, ambient sounds and electronic in decay, that with every passing minute takes the form of cosmic obsessive repetitions. Alienating and oppressive, his show is a sort of appetizer of the black energy that will be freed from the other three bands that will be playing on Benicio's Stage.

In the main arena the atmosphere is completely different. BRUUNO play a groovy – at the same time melodic – punk-hardcore, made of dissonant chords and lower full sounds. Their set is a more "funny and amused" of those characterizing the rest of the evening, with the impact of their songs slightly penalized by a bit too high volume of the voice.

On the contrary, there is no feeling of fun in the music evoked by Hate & Merda (from Florence) on Benicio's Stage. The only pleasure experienced by the hooded duo (also shared by their special guest Alessandro Vagnoni) is the sadistic raping of guitar and drums, creating a dirty, wicked and brutal sludge metal. Walls of sound in pure drone style alternate with devastating post hardcore assaults. And in the apparent chaos the two executioners control the perfect flow of continuous falls of dissonances and feedbacks. Amazing.

After the sonic perversion of this duo, Slander metal-veined hardcore (on the stage of the Disintegrate Arena) is paradoxically music to clean the ears. Powerful and mighty, in only 20 minutes they shoot straight in the face of the listener a classically hardcore fury, without disdaining a strength not far from Pantera and Down southern metal.

Another duo delights the perverse palate of the experimental angle audience: Bologna Violenta. Their passion for the blackest corners of Italian chronicles and for the most grotesque aberrant side of "à la Mondo movie" cinema manifests itself in sort of film melodies destabilized by devastating grindcore fragments. The jackhammer of Alessandro Vagnoni drums is the perfect complement to Nicola Manzan compositional madness – as well as to his orchestral conduction. With a set list focused on the latest superb album (Discordia), Bologna Violenta sonic impact is once again absolutely overwhelming and destabilizing.

Finally a huge crowd gathers in front of the Benicio’s Stage for the last duo: OvO. Their attack is more suffused and veiled than that of their devastating concert in Prato a few months ago, but no less disturbing. Stefania Pedretti gasps of voice and howls of guitar wear themselves out through the spaces built by Bruno Dorella essential rhythms. At about half concert we start to fully experience the malice and depravity of their music, through sounds and volumes tailored to them and capable of erecting the wall of sound partly lacking at the beginning of their show.

OvO are the grand finale of a day dedicated to the less orthodox and more deviant sounds of the Italian underground. Precisely for this reason their show is for us the last act of this festival. While on the main stage DSA Commando e Kaos One & DJ Craim perform their hip hop rhymes, we go into what was Converge stage the day before and now has become a “dining room”, to have a pizza and continue to enjoy the beautiful atmosphere among the participants. Indeed, in addition to the quality of the music, the great atmosphere was the secret weapon of this wonderful festival.

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest - Day 1 - Converge + Raein + Ornaments + Storm{O} – 05.08.2016 – Giavera del Montello (TV)

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest - Day 1
Converge + Raein + Ornaments + Storm{O}

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest - Day 1
Converge + Raein + Ornaments + Storm{O}
08.05.2016 – Giavera del Montello (TV)

Hardcore “attitude” is one of those mythical entities of which many people talk about, yet probably just a few ones really experienced it. The actual appearances of this "entity" are extremely rare events. But now we can truly say that we have witnessed one of its manifestations.

The appearance is at Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2016, when a kind of apocalypse befalls Montello exactly the morning of the first day of the festival. Classic universal flood, complete with a whirlwind that sweeps away some trees, smashing them right upon the main stage. The news reaches us when we are driving and we are halfway, 200 km from the destination. The stage is destroyed, there is no electricity, the concert is likely to be canceled. It is exactly in this moment that the hardcore attitude materializes. The organiser of the event revolutionize the program setting up the show indoor, inside Benicio Live Gigs. The bands – Converge in the first place – decide to play a double set to allow everybody to listen to the concert. An epic rip-off thus turns into a unique opportunity: two concerts of Converge on the same night and the chance to attend one of their concert in a really small and intimate venue.

We are part of those coming in for the first round of concerts: yellow wristband and start at 8:00 p.m.

Playing almost at home Storm{O} usher in the evening in the best way. The opening chills of the disquiet of In volo and then all the hardcore power of the quartet from Feltre. The songs follow one another without interruption, into a single stream of music and shouted words. Amazing the dissonant wall of sound erected by the band. Especially touching D’istanti and – peak and conclusion of their concert - Delle nostre vite appese: all the present sing/scream every single word and then suddenly it is the moment for a liberating mosh.

Quick change on stage and it is time for Ornaments. There is a significant slow down in speed, but heaviness does not dim at all. Set aside the early days post core, tonight show is focused on their new sounds: slower and elephantine, they move within the horizon of doom and drone, but without completely abandoning post rock ethereal melodies. Once again Ornaments play a really intense live - like all those that we have seen since 2004.

Then the moment long awaited by all those present: Converge live show. Benicio Live Gigs is really choke full and exudes energy: I can only imagine what it must have been waiting outside for the second set!!! Before the assault begins, Jacob Bannon thanks everyone for the effort made and for keeping up - or rather: doubled! - the event, and he incites the audience to sing "Ben! Ben! Ben! Ben!” to call Ben Koller in his place. Once the drummer took the stage, the quartet of Salem overwhelms all present with the hurricane and the fury of its own music. Within seconds the apocalypse takes place, and we find ourselves thrown back into the rear. 45 minutes of continuous attacks and counterattacks. Everything is at its highest. Engaged in wild mosh and stage diving, the audience is likely to tear down the venue even more than it did the whirlwind! The band is uncontrollable and if the voice of Bannon - perfect in growl - is not always scratchy in his screamed parts, it is anyway supported by Nate Newton powerful one (flawless both with bass and voice) and by Kurt Ballou (not sparing on guitar distortion and riffs!) choirs. Behind and within all this, the steamroller of Ben Koller drums. Although sounds risk of being a bit engulfed under the ceiling of the venue (in the area behind the front rows where this becomes lower), the impact is devastating and the freed power is as destructive as cathartic. Personal apex of tonight setlis the really overwhelming All We Love We Live Behind: perfect fusion of the incredibly huge energy on and off stage, emphasized by a unique immense chorus sang at the top of everyone’s voice. The feeling is that of something incredibly compact and monolithic, combined with a truly hardcore spirit and humility. AMAZING.

The closure of this first set (probably due to organizational reasons) it is up to Raein, from Forlì. Their screamo/post-hardcore alternates more "violent" quick parts and openings with a loosened pace, with melody and rhythm creeping into new paths and new sound research, near to the most passionate post rock. Sharp sound (at times a little bit deafening because of the monstrous volume) arpeggios paint emotional landscapes on which the singer screams breathlessly. Melodically really fascinating, they are certainly not so immediate, given the sprawling structure of their songs. The audience is a bit flowed out the venue (playing after Converge is not exactly an easy task!), but Raein do not save their energies and the impact of their concert is really impressive.

The Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2016 almost did not see the light. But the attitude of the bands - together with the great passion, determination and ability of the organizers - have ensured that the event took place. Not only: they also made this event something unique. A double event. A double concert to ensure that everyone enjoyed the evening, moving from the green outdoor arena into the dark small club. We do not know how many bands would have given this availability. Certainly Converge, Raein, Ornaments and Storm {O} gave it. And who was there that night can really say - without exaggeration – he attended a historic concert.
