Stones From the Hill - V Edition – High Reeper + Tuna de Tierra + Rancho Bizzarro – 01.05.2018 - Secret Show (Cecina, LI)

Sembra tutto perfetto.

Il nostro Stones from the Hill inizia dal Rancho Bizzarro.

You can only trust yourself and the first six Black Sabbath albums”.

Stones From the Hill - V Edition – High Reeper + Tuna de Tierra + Rancho Bizzarro – 01.05.2018 - Secret Show (Cecina, LI)

May 1st: a beautiful sunny day to be spent in the middle of nature, with friends, grilled food and beer, at a stoner rock festival. Everything seems perfect. Then bad weather distorts our plans. Fortunately, the festival is moved to a sheltered place, without damaging the atmosphere of the event.

Our Stones from the Hill starts at Rancho Bizzarro. Their instrumental desert rock sounds less dry than in the first concerts we attended, and it seems to have absorbed the humidity of the air until it swelled and developed new vegetal forms on its surface, new nuances that certainly enrich its shape. The band sounds decidedly more powerful and compact, like a cactus growing in the American desert. A cactus from which guitar solos sprout like sharp and red-hot spines, and unexpected evocative openings bloom like flowers.

While the flood continues undauntedly around us, other sounds of the desert keep us company. If Rancho Bizarro is a cactus, Tuna de Tierra are a peyote plant. Psychoactive both in the softer enveloping parts, as in the robust mesmerizing ones, they manage to lift real dunes with their sandy sounds, rich in medium frequencies. Dunes so dense that it seems to get bogged down inside them, but from which we can pull out the ankles thanks to a really powerful and full of (slowed down) groove drum. Mostly instrumental, they are effective even in the rare vocal parts, more loose than on record. At the end of their concert the air seems to have become dry, although it continues to rain. I need a beer.

The beer is offered by the American High Reeper, with their alcoholic hard rock ending the day with a ultra-funny concert. Since the first riff we understand that the five from Philadelphia fully embrace the philosophy "You can only trust yourself and the first six Black Sabbath albums". Their world stopped in the mid seventies, and I (who in those days I had not yet been born!) with them. Tonight I do not care what happened after Ozzy left Sabbath. What matters are the slanting and subtly evil riffs, which with extreme simplicity sway creating an overwhelming groove. Unfortunately, Zach Thomas voice does not have the fullness it shows on album, weakened by a flue, that anyway does not prevent him from wriggling as if he was possessed by the spirit of rock n 'roll. Spirit that takes possession of me too, reminding me that sometimes you have to take time to better headbang.

Stones From the Hill - III Edition - Mondo Generator + Mr. Bison + Varego + Geeah + Saat - 25.09.2016 - Secret Show [fra Marina di Cecina e Vada (LI)] - diario di un evento -

Stones From the Hill - III Edition
Mondo Generator + Mr. Bison + Varego + Geeah + Saat
25.09.2016 – Secret Show [fra Marina di Cecina e Vada (LI)]

Stones From the Hill - III Edition
Mondo Generator + Mr. Bison + Varego + Geeah + Saat
09.25.2016 – Secret Show [fra Marina di Cecina e Vada (LI)]
- diary of an event -

This time I can not talk of a live report. Indeed, it is not possible to "review" (in a more or less proper meaning of this word) an event that has involved us in person even more than in the last edition. When you spend the whole day making all the possible things that can be useful in such a complex machine as a festival, it is impossible to capture all the nuances that we usually try to fix in live reports. This is the reason why I subtitled it "diary of an event": because these words are a personal - extremely personal - account that tries to immortalize the spirit that animated this third chapter of Stones From the Hill.

It was a real big party. This time it was not a "generator party", this is true, but the spirit was still that one. With your feet on the sand, the sea in your eyes and the sunset gradually painting everything in red giving the "illusion" of the desert, you really got the sensation to be moved to the California of twenty years ago.

All the bands - all of them! - contributed to immerse the audience in the dusty, a bit wild, super-groovy and mighty atmosphere of stoner and its many souls: from the more strictly desert one to the more southern one, also passing through hard rock and sludge influences.

There was a very large (remember it was secret show!) and passionate audience: everyone on that beach was there because he wanted to listen to that music and to those bands. To see once again many of the faces met at the last edition, and to know many more new ones, really gave the feeling of a scene that is emerging and - gradually - growing. And this suggests that the crew is moving in the right direction and that the many efforts are well channeled.

And when someone like Nick Oliveri - who really played a great gig with his Mondo Generator, performing even songs of Kyuss and QOTSA - wanders around the beach, rummaging through the vinyls stand, talking with virtually anyone, drinking together with anyone and taking pictures with anyone... it definitely seems that everything is turning in the right way! Drinking a couple of shots with him and trying to explain in English what it is that "submarine" (the Italian word is "sommergibile" and it is used for a beer with a shot of rhum inside it) you are giving him to drink...well, it is priceless!

But all this is only possible thanks to a great engine called PASSION, which is what Matteo, Marco, Giulio, Alessio and Mattia have instilled in their project and which is shared by all those who are part of the crew. Passion that creates events such as the concert of Mondo Generator, Mr. Bison, Varego, Geeah and Saat. Passion that becomes contagious because "the family" has grown a bit and "something is moving" and a scene is popping up around this. There is a great enthusiasm. So much great that...a fourth chapter is already in the works!

Stones From the Hill - II Edition - Appaloosa + Green Oracle + The Digger's Lane + Yearnin' - 23.07.2016 - Secret Show (Pisa/Livorno)

Stones From the Hill - II Edition
Appaloosa + Green Oracle + The Digger's Lane + Yearnin'
23.07.2016 - Secret Show (fra Livorno e Pisa)

Stones From the Hill - II Edition
Appaloosa + Green Oracle + The Digger's Lane + Yearnin'
07.23.2016 - Secret Show (Pisa/Livorno)

Those ones grown up with the myth of "generator parties" (lo-fi parties that built the stoner scene of south California) well know how cool it can be a completely DIY festival: submerged in the wood, made only by enthusiasts of the genre and powered by a fuel generator. The key of this all - to make of the event an electric assault instead of a candlelight unplugged - is the generator. Exactly that generator that stopped to work in the afternoon with risk of spoiling the whole event. But the real engine of such a festival is not the generator itself: indeed, it is the passion of a bunch of people addicted to distortions. And so everything falls into place and everything is ready for the party. before it gets dark, the II chapter of Stones from the Hill begins and it does not certainly save on the power of sounds.

Yearnin' - playing at home - are the first band to turn on the amps. their blues rock - compelling and warm - is the right introduction to the evening, able to create the proper atmosphere with its "quick-setting" riffs.

The Digger's Lane (from Bergamo) slow down the groove with their alternative rock, halfway between song singer-songwriter folk and indie rock. A bit penalized by the warmth of distortions and dynamism of the first band, they are a sort of parenthesis to breathe before the sonic shock wave of the last two bands of the bill.

Perfectly absorbed the positive vibes of the wood, tonight Green Oracle play even more enthralling and fluid than in the (yet great!) concert in May, as support band before Ufomammut. The cosmic doom of the trio - unluckily deprived of the ethereal oneiric Giulia voice (tonight with the band only in the form of recordings) - is amplified in its "spiritual" effect thanks to more incisive fluidity and groove, and also through really well balanced sounds - deep and compact, able to fill any space among the trees without getting lost.

Great protagonists of this evening, Appaloosa. From the first time we saw them live (2003 or 2004) their music has been evolving towards more and more personal directions, from the hyperkinetic math rock of their beginnings to an analogic techno veined with space rock. The ultra-groovy rhythmics of bass and drums alternate obsessive trance hammer strokes and bouncing funky openings. There is a constant chase between drums and drum machine with a disruptive psychedelic effect. The outcome is at the same time stunning, alienating and englobing: being submerged in  the dark of the wood - partly interrupted only by the lights on stage - increases the feeling of fusion and immersion into the sonic wave shaped by the band from Livorno.

Few raindrops at the end of the show, but the atmosphere is so electric that covered and sheltered the amps - the party goes on and even rain decides to stop. So we just have to stay tuned and get ready for the III chapter of Stones from the Hill...two months to go!
