Helmet – 28.09.2019 – Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

Helmet – 28.09.2019 – Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

Helmet – 09.28.2019 – Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

If air guitar is the favourite bedroom's sport for any metalhead, air drum is an even more exciting discipline to which no heavy music listener can escape. And if there is one band that seems to have been created expressly for air drum Olympics, that band is called Helmet. No one has ever had a more exciting groove than them. And even if John Stanier - drummer in their 90s historical records and the principal architect of that convulsive driving rhythmic motion typical of their music - is no longer in the lineup since a long time, I cannot miss the thirty-year anniversary tour of the band.
Tonight concert, for me, is a real "imaginary drums" competition, in which I take part with agonistic spirit, without saving the slightest drop of sweat.

Page Hamilton riffs are the fuel that drives the participants in the race (mostly veterans of 90s grunge and noise rock, but not of the nostalgic kind). His guitar is a spring, and he deforms it until it accumulates a frightening energy, to then release the tension with overwhelming rhythmic elasticity. Hamilton is a crossbreed between a high school physics professor and a skilled worker who perfectly handles the machinery of his work. The stage is a laboratory where Hamilton experiences the elasticity of his spring, rusted by dissonance and noise. But it is also a workbench on which he builds toys, for which all of us 90s children go crazy. These toys would not be enough to make us unleash in an air drum contest if there was not the right one on the drums. In the band since 2006, Kyle Stevenson has taken over the place that was Stanier's one. And with his extraordinary performance, he proves to deserve it!

In some moments the clean voice does not sound extremelyy precise (for example in some multi-voice choirs), but this does not affect the energy of the concert. After 30 years of career, Hamilton and his Helmet are still able to combine mathematical precision and unpredictability.

Super-sweaty I leave the Bloom. I'm not sure I won the air drum race, but a couple of days of pain in my neck and back proves I gave it my all. And how great Helmet are.

Flipper + Heads. + Dysnea Boys - 20.08.2019 - Bi Nuu (Berlin)

Flipper + Heads. + Dysnea Boys - 20.08.2019 - Bi Nuu (Berlin)

Flipper + Heads. + Dysnea Boys - 08.20.2019 - Bi Nuu (Berlin)

Berlin is a city rebuilt on its wounds. The scars of the past appear everywhere in its streets, although the city has been able to reconcile the opposites and find new balances. Where subcultures and minorities now coexist, totalitarianisms had erased plurality. Tonight's concert could not take place in a more suitable city. Three bands that differently represent the present of the city (exchanges of ideas and collaborations) and show the wounds of the past (hard-edged guitars like rusty pieces of iron emerging from the Wall). And there could not have been a more suitable place than Bi Nuu: a venue under an S-Bahn station in the heart of Kreuzberg, with a typically Berliner underground atmosphere (Kreuzberg was in fact the heart of the community experiments of occupied houses in West Berlin during the 80s).

Dysnea Boys hardcore seems to come precisely from those squats that swarmed in the neighborhood in that decade. Angry and noisy, with the guitar often following the path of dissonance, but also with martial rhythms and dark atmospheres to the limits of post punk. The different origin of the 4 band members (USA, Canada, Scotland, Germany) is the confirmation that the strength of this city lies in the ability to integrate and rework the differences.

The Heads. (also based in Berlin and of various origins - 2 Germans and one Australian) play new millennium noise rock, with powerful distortions and devastating explosions in sludge style, but with a melodic taste reminiscent of 90s alternative rock. In their music there are Shellac and Helmet broken rhythms, the introspective moments of certain Swans and Godflesh post apocalyptic grandeur. All this makes them the most exciting surprise of the evening. Extraordinary!

If there is a music that represents the attempt to reconstruct a harmonic balance where dissonances seem to prevent it, that is the 80s/90s American noise rock. Flippers are here to prove it and, to confirm the spirit of collaboration of this evening, they are helped by Mike Watt (Minutemen) bass and David Yow (Jesus Lizard) voice. After making fun of Steve DePace wearing gloves to play drums, Ted Falconi starts playing chords that seem to repeat themselves endlessly with minimal (noisy) variations and soon we are hypnotized by this very old Dracula (directly from Francis Ford Coppola's movie) which seems to age more and more with the succession of chords. Suddenly David Yow appears on stage and the delirium starts. He throws himself on the audience and tries to be the most disturbing and slimy possible (just like his voice), embracing people to the limits of strangulation, pushing, touching, stealing objects and throwing them, throwing himself to the ground (always trying to drag someone with him). Everything sounds crooked and acid, but also exciting. Listening to Sacrifice (historical Flipper song made "famous" by Melvins) with David Yow delirious voice is undoubtedly the peak of the evening. But the craziest and most absurd thing is the (infinite) ending in which the concept of collaboration and participation is so extreme that it proves to be wacky funny: everybody on stage for a whistle-based refrain. A collective party.

Coilguns- Millennials

Coilguns- Millennials
(Hummus Records, 2018)

Coilguns- Millennials
(Hummus Records, 2018)

Having attended the wild madness of these Swiss live on stage, I didn't think that this could even come out of the speakers of the home stereo, exclusively through their music. Because at home there is no Louis Jucker jumping upon you, between one uncoordinated dance and another, shouting at you in the face and rolling around as tarantulated on the ground. Nor Donatien Thiévent dancing as if he were at a rave party, totally stoned, inserting synthesizers and screaming in the distortion wall erected by Jona Nido's eight-string guitar. Yet, even without the physical impetus of the concert, the band's music explodes from the speakers with an impressive pressure, knocking the sofa out of the window and making me jump to the top of the wardrobe together with the house cats. The guitar has got a monstrous depth and roundness, without this weighing down the agile and elastic architectures built by Luc Hess's drums, nor softening the contrasts between the lacerating dissonances. Three members out of four (Jucker, Nido, Hess) were part of The Ocean in the Heliocentric / Anthropocentric period, but of the progressive post-metal collective there is no trace among the crazy chips of Millennials. Here pieces of rusted iron, glass and cement fly everywhere as in the days of Breach and Botch explosions. There is no memory of solid, magnificent buildings, rich in baroque embellishments and spiritual depth. The new millennium has collapsed.

Gouge Away – Burnt Sugar

Gouge Away – Burnt Sugar
(Deathwish, 2018)

Gouge Away – Burnt Sugar
(Deathwish, 2018)

That moment when hardcore fury turns against itself, shattering its claims into sharp existential doubts like splinters. In (sort of young Julie Christmas) Christina Michelle's hysteria there is all the neurosis of a riot grrl that does not understand if digging deep inside herself is a way to escape from social issues heavy like boulders, or a therapy to cure her instability. Anger is no longer directed towards social injustices as in the debut album (, Dies), yet it explodes in reflections related to personal tragedies ("I'm so fed up with hope" sings Christina about her mother's illness). Riffs break up into rusty fragments without losing viscerality, while melodies acquire acidity thanks to continuous dissonances without this invalidating their catchiness. Burnt Sugar is abrasive like Jesus Lizard music, but instead of the crazy perversion of the Texan band, it has a strongly bipolar sensitivity, alternating hydrophobia - Wilt (I Will not) - to bittersweet moments of hope debtors of the brightest Sonic Youth - Stray. Twenty-six, tormented, minutes of wonderful 90s noise rock.

KEN Mode – Loved

KEN Mode – Loved
(Season of Mist, 2018)

KEN Mode – Loved
(Season of Mist, 2018)

Does noise rock still have a provocative and destabilizing push? Do the destructuring of harmony in dissonant splinters, and the ever increasing level of intensity of sound, still disturb the listener, or have they become conventional expedients of musical composition? The impact of Canadians KEN Mode on our eardrums certainly cannot be as much shocking as that of the Amphetamine Reptile bands on 80s teenagers. Years and years of dissonant guitars and thundering basses along angular rhythms have made us immune to amazement. But can noise rock be reduced to a simple provocation? If so, Steve Albini's impact would have been much less substantial than it actually was. The shock that our brain experiences in front of what it had never heard before is only the detonator: the acid that really corrodes the static nature is the use of noise as a new form of harmony. Depending on the way dissonance is used, the boundaries of rock music (because this is what we are talking about, not avant-garde) are corroded and reshaped. And KEN Mode model the known boundaries with personal forms, through post-hardcore assaults of Unsane school made overwhelming by assaults that smell of Meshuggah-like metal and spectral riffs. The black man who looks at us grinning from the cover of Loved (seventh record of the band from Winnipeg) is as disturbing as their music, sort of confession of a serial killer. And when violence leaves room for peaceful passages (Slint echoes in the sax of This is a Love Test), it's good to be ready for the assaults that are waiting for us around the corner. Because abnormality is the new normality.

Deafheaven – Ordinary Corrupt Human Love

Deafheaven – Ordinary Corrupt Human Love
(Anti-, 2018)

Deafheaven – Ordinary Corrupt Human Love
(Anti-, 2018)

Staring at the Sun too long can burn retinas. Deafheaven have always challenged the blinding rays, filtering direct light with a cloud of stunning fog and then refracting it through layers of Norwegian ice. Their music is a cold, clear and dazzling winter day, able to release small flashes of warmth under the direct rays of the Sun, but able to quickly turn itself into a snowstorm. Precisely this ambivalence has made Deafheaven a unique creature in the panorama of alternative music, in constant balance between black metal, post hardcore, post rock and shoegaze, and consequently one of the most loved/hated. With the fourth album the fog clears and the ice melts, as on the day when winter flows into spring. Ordinary Corrupt Human Love is the equinox, the moment when the blasts of freezing northern wind turn into a breeze ready to carry the pollen of rebirth. A metamorphosis welcomed with a sense of trust and hope, under the gaze of the Sun. The San Francisco band recounts the ordinariness of a love through continuous literary quotations (also the title of the album is taken from Graham Greene's End of a Story) and a stratified, complex music, sometimes even baroque. The initial You Without End, for example, is a bright fresco that closely resembles the piano opening of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. But it is only the beginning, because the emphatic sentimentality of the best Smashing Pumpkins will also envelop the most violent outbursts. Every love hides precarious balances on the edge of obsession and neurosis, and the one told by Deafheaven is no exception. In the search for peace there is a continuous restlessness, as well as George Clarke's acid and schizophrenic screams are hidden between flashes of ecstasy and soft serenity. Staring at the Sun too long, in the constant search for heat, can really burn our sight, and nourish the obsession that grows in our soul.

Black is fine on every occasion. Elegant and never superfluous, it also helps to streamline the figure. Tonight we have plenty of it, because there is no better match, for (Mar)nero other than Nero (di Marte) - but in the past I have also witnessed an excellent match with Nero(rgasmo).

We enter Il Contro on Zambra first riffs. Their post hardcore more than black is rust-coloured. It leaves in your mouth that taste of iron typical of when you break a lip. An unpleasant sensation generated by a mixture of pain and anger, dissonance and broken rhythms. The Florentine band, which has just released its debut album, is a concentrate of crooked distorted riffs, which exalt all the fans (like me) of the sonic sadism of Botch, Unsane, Helmet and other people who used to make the bidet with sandpaper towel to soothe the pain of living. The singer, David (who I remember at the microphone of Disquietedby in his underwear on stage!), tonight shows quite another elegance, alternating scratchy screams to deep vocalizations that seem to come out of a didgeridoo. An extraordinary discovery!

That black could refract itself in colored reflections it was shown by the wonderful Derivae, album of the 2014 by the Bolognese Nero di Marte. A record that starts from the intense darkness of metal to reveal unprecedented nuances, at times close to post-rock, with pure progressive spirit. Complex and sophisticated, it is a music full of details that risks getting lost (and leaving the listener drifting) if sounds are not perfectly calibrated. Tonight, unfortunately, the structure of songs tends to collapse on itself due to the non-optimal sounds (bass drum did not reached my ears, for example). The notes of Il Diluvio are always moving, and the new tracks (more delicate and atmospheric, and even more complex) are really interesting, but perhaps the elegant black of Nero di Marte would require greater sound care to express itself at its best.

The post-harcore service uniform is the black that closes the evening. Marnero are only four, but they look like an army. Not only when they start the assault (A.C.H.A.B.) but also when they show they know how to create the right climax, before throwing themselves into the clashes (Le navi non ardono ancora). A band that builds the wait and manipulates it with complex arrangements, dilating it to the point of explosion. What is astonishing is how this extremely mature sound research has not in any way scratched the hardcore fury, nor JD Raudo irony (who, since the times of Laghetto, continues to perform hilarious gags). With a set focused on the latest amazing album (Quando vedrai le navi in fiamme sarà giunta l’ora) it ends the "black night" of Il Contro.

Neurosis + Converge + Deaf Kids - 17.06.2018 - Zona Roveri (Bologna)

Neurosis + Converge + Deaf Kids - 17.06.2018 - Zona Roveri (Bologna)

Catarsi completata.

Neurosis + Converge + Deaf Kids - 06.17.2018 - Zona Roveri (Bologna)

Summer begins. Season of outdoor festivals and mega-rock-events, with songs that made the history of my adolescence, to be sung loudly in the middle of an ocean of 60,000 people. Yet there are those like me who keep on sheltering in the darkness of an indoor venue, as in an eternal January, to listen to devastating music and get out of it devastated. There is something mystical and spiritual in all this masochism. Cathartic suffering.

As soon as I enter the club, on the first hallucinatory notes of Deaf Kids, I feel that my expectations will be confirmed. I will lose liters of sweat and I will evaporate all my energy, while my back and feet will soon be shredded. Deaf Kids music does not help to refresh and oxygenate the room. An assault in which a Motorhead riff repeats itself obsessively (as if it had been looped by a math rock band), while a screaming voice is manipulated by infinite delays and cascades of effects. Noise crumplings and proto-metal outbursts so devious as to seem industrial, for an interesting concert, but in the long run a bit difficult to sustain. While Dave Edwardson (Neurosis) follows the gig under the stage, I go out for a breath of oxygen. Because soon there will not really be more time to breathe.

For the third time in two months I am overwhelmed by Converge. But, unlike at Roadburn, tonight there are no sounds calibrated to the millimeter, nor an impeccable band (remembering above all the set dedicated to You Fail Me), neither an exalted yet contenaid audience. Tonight it is a massacre. Just a few seconds and the first rows are transformed into a havoc. In this chaos of sweaty bodies colliding from every angle, the band of Salem draws an insane enjoyment and beats heavier and heavier, as the minutes run. Bannon does not calibrate his force and he frees it as the explosions require, sometimes sounding a little out of breath and risking to crumble against the sound wall. But the energy that he manages to unleash is still disruptive, and the emotionality he transmits penetrates you inside. Each song sounds better and more devastating than the previous one (both physically and emotionally). Their set - an exact hour mainly focused on the latest, amazing, The Dusk in Us - is a hurricane that cleanses the mind.

After the storm, sweaty and exhausted, I find myself in the eye of the storm with Neurosis. In a state of apparent calm, between post rock arpeggios and ambient synth fluxes, yet with the apocalypse looming menacingly to the horizon, in the form of mammoth riffs and unbearable heaviness. The band from Oakland has got flawless sounds and the impact of its attacks shakes the many long beards of the audience. From the first riff opening their set (that of Given to the Rising), to the last drum roll of that industrial/post-modern trip that is Through Silver in Blood (perfect closing of the evening), I remain in mystical ecstasy, savouring the physical suffering due to the suffocating heat, and transforming it into celestial visions of collapsing galaxies and prehistoric volcanic eruptions. In the middle of all this there is Burn, the song from which almost fifteen years ago my love for this band was born. In its hot intimacy, in its icy moments of cosmic solitude, and in its distorted openings, I rejuvenate about fifteen years. Catharsis completed.

Eyehategod + The Mild – 10.05.2018 – OZ (Bologna)

Eyehategod + The Mild – 10.05.2018 – OZ (Bologna)

Eyehategod + The Mild – 05.10.2018 – OZ (Bologna)

After the liver transplant in 2016, it is certainly surprising to find Mike Williams on stage. But those who saw him live in 2015 (when he had just overcome all sorts of problems with justice and drugs) knew that, although always on the cutting edge, this old apparently irrecoverable "toxic" has got an extraordinary fiber. Even tonight he proves it.

The Mild opens this evening with their rusty deviant post hardcore, alternating angry outbursts, dissonant screeches and suffocating slowdowns. Even if sounds do not fully enhance the power of the Venetian band (which I had the chance to appreciate at Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2017) the appetizer based on nails, dead insects and syringes, offered by the trio, stimulates the appetite for the sound abomination that will come soon after.

The main dish is a mixture of feedbacks and acid dissonances making blues a perverse music beyond the limit of the imaginable. This is how Eyehategod welcomes us. There could not have been a better stage than a squat with a post-industrial atmosphere, with a degree of temperature and humidity comparable to that of New Orleans marshes. Dirty hardcore parts show the violence the band continues to unleash even after 30 years of career, and the audience enthusiastically collects these splinters of anger by throwing themselves into the mosh. In the slow tracks, in which the curses of the Mississippi delta become ineluctable as doom boulders and crooked as noise rock, the master is Jimmy Bower, with its fat and greasy riffs (also because, unfortunately, there is only one live guitar, and the absence of Brian Patton is felt). But if Bower seems to suffer physically the heat, Williams does not give in a millimeter and spits venom like a hardcore kid, balancing himself with the help of the microphone stand. Ok, it's not like Mike is the portrait of health. However, as evidenced by the fact that ther is no need of delirious gags to let him take a breath (as happened in 2015, when every song, as perfectly sung, was followed by toxic staggering ravings), Mike sings really great and, above all, he is live and fight here with us.

Amenra + Boris - 28.02.2018 - Locomotiv Club (BO)

Amenra + Boris - 28.02.2018 - Locomotiv Club (BO)

Droni e sludge a profusione.

Catartico e stupendo.

Amenra + Boris - 02.28.2018 - Locomotiv Club (BO)

It's one of those nights that will go down in history. And not only for the concert. Indeed tonight we challenge the extremely bad weather alert of our town and the forecasts indicating 100% snow on the Apennines and decide to go at all costs to this concert that we expected so much, having already decided to go despite knowing that we would have lost the first part of Boris live, because of the early start time (announced only two days before) due to the two very consistent setlists and a non-trivial set change.

The outward travel is great and we enter Locomotiv that Boris have been playing almost half an hour. Fortunately, we have more than half of the setlist ahead of us. A wall of fog and lights on the stage, to embrace a wall of (almost) impenetrable sound. Tonight's set includes their latest album, DEAR (Sargent House, 2017), in its entirety. Drones and sludge in profusion. But also melodies singed by (sometimes almost "out of tune") Takeshi voice, giving onto the calm and still sea of post-rock. In their own way epic - and incredibly enthralling - the parts in which Atsuo takes possession of the microphone, the stage and the immense gong behind his shoulders: a true star performer. Exciting and wonderful some passages like Wata solo in Dystopia - Vanishing Point -, in which celestial notes crumble into noisy fragments and buzzing of static electricity (signal interruptions - deliberate or random? - which are one of the many examples of Boris continuous destabilisation of music). Great concert: for me it goes beyond the one I attended just over a year ago in Livorno.

Half an hour set change. Lights turn off again. An intro almost in the background. Colin H. Van Eeckhout gets on stage, he crouches on the floor, shoulders to the audience and the hood of the sweatshirt on his head. To follow, in a few minutes, the rest of the band. Metal and penetrating percussions and the explosion of Boden. Amenra concert is a crescendo of emotion, which digs into the listener/spectator, and ends - abruptly and dryly - with the last note of Silver Needle. Golden Nail, leaving us all emptied and disoriented. Sounds are powerful and perfect, as is Van Eeckhout voice, which hypnotizes both when he screams all the rage and pain that he frees and exorcises, both in the rarest moments when he cradles in despair. The video projections are the perfect commentary for images of the ritual of which we all are at once spectators and participants. Amenra are the ministers of a concert that is not just a show, but it is also a real exchange and flow of emotions among the most extreme ones. An evocation of fury and evil that soothes those who abandon themselves to its power. Cathartic and breathtaking.
