La seconda parte del viaggio lungo il quale ci accompagnano i Moon Duo è un volo leggero nella calda luce primaverile. Dall’oscurità invernale che ha annebbiato i contorni in gradazioni di ombre nel Vol. 1 di Occult Architecture, ai raggi di Sole che annebbiano i contorni attraverso tenui riflessi in questo Vol. 2. Il percorso si snoda in un labirinto di specchi in cui la luce giunge da infinite angolazioni, stordendo e regalando una delicata sensazione di pace dei sensi. Si fluttua in un liquido amniotico di suoni sintetici e fraseggi di chitarra che lascia sospesi a mezz'aria. Insensibili alla forza di gravità, levitiamo. Svuotati dai pensieri negativi, ci lasciamo cullare da ritmi ipnotici e da melodie appena sussurrate. Lo Yang dell'esperienza Occult Architecture è pura neo-psichedelia sognante, dallo spirito esplicitamente hippie. Serenità evanescente. Forse a tratti fin troppo evanescente, soprattutto se confrontata con la concretezza di alcuni brani del primo volume. Il viaggio si conclude con la lunga e ossessiva Crystal World, sorta di autostrada di kraftwerkiana memoria, infinita cavalcata che - anziché svilupparsi sull’asfalto di Autobahn - si libra in aria come una navicella fantascientifica. Krautrock che diventa krautpop.

The second part of our trip together with Moon Duo is a light flight in the hot spring light. From the darkness of winter that has clouded the contours in shades of shadows in Vol. 1 of Occult Architecture, to the rays of the Sun that dim the contours through tenuous reflections in this Vol. 2. The path winds through a labyrinth of mirrors where light comes from infinite angles, stunning and giving a delicate sensation of peace of mind. We float in an amniotic fluid of synthetic sounds and guitar phrasings that leaves us suspended in the middle of the air. Insensitive to the force of gravity, we levitate. Emptied from negative thoughts, we let ourselves be lulled by hypnotic rhythms and barely whispered melodies. The Yang of Occult Architecture is pure dreamy neo-psychedelia, with an explicitly hippie spirit. Evanescent serenity. Perhaps at times even too evanescent, especially if compared to the concreteness of some tracks of the first volume. The journey ends with the long and obscure Crystal World, a sort of kraftwerkish highway, infinite ride that - instead of developing on the asphalt of Autobahn - soars in the air as a sci-fi starship. Krautrock becoming krautpop.

Esperti viaggiatori (mentali), i Moon Duo. Stavolta ci accompagnano in un trip che inizia dopo il tramonto per concludersi quando il Sole sarà ben alto sopra le nostre teste. Dal buio profondo della notte, illuminato solo dai neon della metropoli, alla luce accecante del giorno. Il percorso di maturazione e trasformazione compiuto dalla band è un viaggio di pop psichedelico alchemico diviso in due volumi: Occult Architecture Vol. 1 e 2. Un viaggio che inizia dalle nebbie darkwave e si conclude nel cielo azzurro della neo-psichedelia. Lo Yin è il primo volume, registrato nella più dark delle città (Berlino) e pubblicato nel più freddo dei mesi (Febbraio). La droga (sintetica) generata dal gruppo è una musica caratterizzata da distorsioni fuzzose (disciolte in flanger liquidi) e da un labirinto di ritmi ossessivi che si inseguono, ipnotici, senza fine. In questa atmosfera claustrofobica tipicamente berlinese ci sono degli splendidi raggi di luce lunare: le melodie. Sono loro a rendere canzoni come Cold Fear e Will of the Devil delle autentiche perle di pop lisergico. Dream pop che diventa nightmare pop.

Moon Duo – Occult Architecture Vol. 1

Moon Duo: expert (mental) travellers. This time they take us on a trip that begins after the sunset to end when the Sun will be high above our heads. From the deep dark of the night, illuminated only by the neons of the metropolis, to the blinding light of the day. The path of growth and transformation carried out by the band is a journey of alchemic psychedelic pop divided into two volumes: Occult Architecture Vol. 1 and 2. A journey that begins with the darkwave fog and ends in the neo-psychedelic blue sky. Yin is the first volume, recorded in the darkest of the cities (Berlin) and published in the coldest of the months (February). The (synthetic) drug generated by the band is a music characterized by fuzzy distortions (dissolved in liquid flanger) and a labyrinth of obsessive, hypnotic, rhythms chasing one another endlessly. In this typically Berlin claustrophobic atmosphere, there are beautiful rays of lunar light: their melodies. They makes songs as Cold Fear and Will of the Devil authentic pearls of lysergic pop. Dream pop that becomes nightmare pop.

Quel tizio barbuto e quella tizia con lo sguardo perso dietro la frangetta hanno regalato anche a voi le strane pilloline che hanno colorato tutta la mia camera? Anche voi avete la strana sensazione che in mezz’ora di musica quelle pilloline vi facciano attraversare epoche intere di pop psichedelico, come sospesi in una bolla? La loro minuscola astronave, guarda caso decollata da San Francisco, sta volteggiando ossessiva nel vostro cervello, seguendo spirali ritmiche dalle quali non è possibile uscire? Il barbuto chitarrista ha sciolto anche il vostro cubetto di zucchero con un flusso liquido di melodie di chitarra che hanno annullato gli effetti della forza di gravità sul vostro corpo? Come diavolo hanno fatto questi due spostati a fondere gli stordenti labirinti dei Cluster ai tenebrosi sintetizzatori dei Suicide, con un lato umano tipicamente garage rock, affogando tutto questo in una gustosa marea neopsichedelica che ha il sapore di fine anni 80? D’accordo, questi due non sono gli ultimi arrivati nel campo degli uscieri delle porte della percezione. Erik “Ripley” Johnson è la mente dei Wooden Shjips e da anni si diverte a giocare al bianconiglio con i suoi ascoltatori, e con la sua metà Sanae Yamada è giunto al terzo album sotto il nome Moon Duo (avvalendosi per l’occasione di un batterista vero e proprio, John Jeffrey, al posto della drum machine). Questa è gente che sa come far perdere l’orientamento, costringendo l’innocente ascoltatore a doverli seguire. Questa è gente che sa creare dipendenza. Shadow of the Sun è la loro nuova droga. L’avete presa anche voi?

Did that bearded guy and that lady with eyes lost behind her fringe give to you the same strange pills that coloured my room? Do you feel the strange sensation that during half an hour of music those small pills are carrying you through different ages of psychedelic pop, as if you were suspended in a bubble? Is their tiny spaceship (coincidentally taken off from San Francisco) circling obsessively in your brain, following rhythmic spirals from which you cannot get out? Did the bearded guitarist melted also your sugar cube with a liquid flow of guitar melodies cancelling the effects of force of gravity on your body? How the hell could these two nutty guys be capable of mixing the stunning labyrinths of Cluster and the tenebrous synths of Suicide, with a human side typical of garage rock, drowning all this in a tasty neo-psychedelic wave that have the flavour of the latest 80s? OK, these two guys are not the newcomers among the doorkeepers of perception. Erik “Ripley” Johnson is the mastermind of Wooden Shjips and since many years he enjoys playing the role of the White Rabbit with the listeners of his music, and together with his half Sanae Yamada he arrived to the third Moon Duo album (this time with a real drummer, John Jeffrey, in place of a drum machine). These are people who know pretty well the way to make you lose your orientation, forcing innocent listeners to follow them. These are people that know how to create dependence. Shadow of the Sun is their new drug. Did you already try it?
