1000 Mods - Repeated Exposure To...

Ecco dalla Grecia una nuova edizione aggiornata del dizionario della musica heavy. Alla definizione di "Stoner rock" leggiamo "riff pesanti e rotondi come il culo di un elefante, con un groove da corsa in macchina (decapottabile) sotto il Sole cocente del deserto Californiano, suoni sabbiosi e fumo di marijuana a pieni polmoni". Questa definizione minuziosa e calzante del genere è messa in musica da un quartetto del Peloponneso che dimostra di conoscere molto bene l'argomento trattato. I 1000 Mods hanno studiato con attenzione la lezione dei maestri (principalmente quanto lasciato in eredità dai Kyuss) e compongono un disco straordinariamente avvincente per quanto esplicitamente di genere. Il segreto per creare grandi canzoni, anche se profondamente circoscritte ad uno stile saturo come lo stoner, sta nella semplicità. "Riff travolgenti, melodie orecchiabili, rallentamenti possenti alternati ad esaltanti accelerazioni, distorsioni grasse e volumi mastodontici". Questo è tutto ciò di cui necessita un disco stoner, secondo la definizione del dizionario heavy pubblicato in Grecia. I 1000 Mods ne hanno afferrato il senso in pieno, mettendolo in pratica con questo album!

Here is from Greece an updated new edition of the heavy music dictionary. At the definition of "Stoner rock" we read "heavy riffs round like the ass of an elephant, with the groove of a car race under the burning Sun of the Californian desert, sandy sounds and lungs saturated with marijuana smoke". This meticulous and fitting definition of the genre is put into music by a Peloponnesian quartet that proves to know the subject very well. 1000 Mods carefully studied the lessons of the masters (mostly what was left in the legacy of Kyuss) and so they compose an extraordinarily engaging yet explicitly genre-related record. The secret to creating great songs, though deeply circumscribed in a saturated style like stoner, lies in simplicity. "Overwhelming riffs, catchy melodies, powerful slowdowns alternating with exciting accelerations, fat distortions and mastodontic volumes." This is all you need for a stoner album, according to the definition of the heavy dictionary published in Greece. 1000 Mods understood it in full, putting it into practice with this album!

Pesano di più sui timpani, 200 decibel di black metal o 200 db di stoner rock? Si dimagrisce di più facendo la sauna con 90% di umidità ad un concerto dei Wolves in the Throne Room o ad uno dei 1000 Mods? Nell'arco di due giorni "mettiamo alla prova il nostro fisico" con due concerti tanto diversi quanto allo stesso modo fisicamente provanti.

L'Albatross viene inizialmente surriscaldato dalle distorsioni dei Mr. Bison. Costretti a settare i suoni con l'aiuto del pubblico (cosa che rende il loro concerto ancor più partecipato e divertente), la band toscana inizialmente ha una chitarra davvero troppo in evidenza, fino al punto di nascondere lo strepitoso lavoro ritmico del batterista e l'ottima prova vocale di Matteo Sciocchetto. Con il passare del tempo le cose si aggiustano e i 3 si confermano la straordinaria macchina da riff che conosciamo, con il loro stoner rock carico a mille.

I greci 1000 Mods rispondono al fuoco alzando il volume ancora di più. Del resto dovevamo immaginarlo, dato il titolo del loro ultimo album:  Repeated Exposure to High Sound Levels (More than 80 decibels) May Cause Permanent Impairing of Hearing ! Una testata Sunn ci schiaccia a terra fin dal primo riff, e veniamo subito ingoiati da una colata lavica di distorsione, che si muove a velocità ridotta, ma sempre con un gran groove grazie alla rotondità della batteria. All'inizio le chitarre affogano completamente la voce, che solo con il passare dei minuti riesce a bucare finalmente il muro di suono. Sembra di trovarsi di fronte ai Kyuss (evidentissima fonte di ispirazione) ancor più fumati, che si muovono al rallentatore, con le gambe molli, in un Grand Canyon bruciato dal Sole. Caldo, caldissimo, infernale. Il locale è stivato, sembra non ci sia lo spazio per muoversi. Eppure la musica della band greca possiede l'energia per innescare un gran pogo. Pur consapevole della grande attenzione ricevuta dalla band nell'ultimo periodo, mai mi sarei aspettato un pubblico tanto numeroso e tanto caloroso! Entusiasmo meritato, vista la qualità della musica della band, per quanto di genere e chiaramente ispirata ai padri fondatori. Alla fine siamo liquefatti tanto dai volumi mostruosi, quanto dal caldo e dall'umidità, che lascia a terra un bello strato di sudore in puro spirito rock n' roll! (Puzza più un'ascella sudata dopo un concerto black metal o dopo uno stoner?!)

What is heavier on the eardrums? 200 decibels of black metal or 200 decibels of stoner rock? Do I lose more weight having a sauna with 90% humidity at Wolves in the Throne Room concert or at 1000 Mods one? Within two days, we "test our body" with two concerts as much diverse as in the same way physically demanding.

Albatross is initially overheated by Mr. Bison distortions. Forced to set their sounds with the help of the audience (and this makes their concert even more entertaining and funny), in the first songs the Tuscan band has got a really overly highlighted guitar, to the point of hiding the amazing rhythmic work of the drummer and Matteo Sciocchetto's great vocal performance. Over time, things get better and the 3 once again prove to be the extraordinary riff machine we well know, thanks to their super-groovy stoner rock.

The Greeks 1000 Mods respond to the fire by raising their volume even more. We had to imagine it, considering the title of their latest album: Repeated Exposure to High Sound Levels (More than 80 decibels) May Cause Permanent Impairing of Hearing! A Sunn amp head crushes us from the first riff, and we are immediately swallowed by a lazy distortion flow, moving at reduced speed, but always with a great groove thanks to the drummer. At first guitars completely drown the voice, which only after several minutes can finally pierce the wall of sound. It seems to be in front of Kyuss (their main source of inspiration), yet even more doped, moving to the slow motion through a Grand Canyon burned by the Sun. Hot, burning hot, hellish. The venue is chock-a-block, it seems there is no more space to move around. Yet the music of the Greek band has the energy to trigger rushes of mosh. While aware of the great attention the band has received in the last period, I would never expect such a large and passionate audience! Deserved enthusiasm, given the quality of the music of the band, though well set in its genre and clearly inspired by the founding fathers. At the end of the gig, we find ourselves liquefied by the monstrous volumes as well as by the extreme heat and humidity, which leaves a thick layer of sweat on the ground in pure rock n 'roll spirit! (Does your sweaty armpit stink more after a black metal concert or after a stoner one?!)
