Electric Wizard + Ufomammut + Humulus – 18.11.2018 – Live Club (Trezzo sull’Adda, MI)

Electric Wizard + Ufomammut + Humulus – 18.11.2018 – Live Club (Trezzo sull’Adda, MI)

Electric Wizard + Ufomammut + Humulus – 11.18.2018 – Live Club (Trezzo sull’Adda, MI)

I love Electric Wizard and Ufomammut as if they were my elder brothers. I grew up with their music, and at the same time, they grew up before my eyes. They opened my eardrums to new sounds and gave me indispensable advice (especially with regard to unmissable b-movies... certainly not to pick girls up, since their music is not the most suitable for the purpose). Being together with both, tonight, is a dutiful thanks to them, and for this reason I decide to be present in Trezzo sull'Adda despite the concerts of Dark Buddha Rising and Fuoco Fatuo in Bologna and Kikagaku Moyo in Ravenna.

The first to get on the imposing Live Club stage are the hosts Humulus. Their stoner rock drenched in grunge melodies is the perfect starter before tonight's meaty bits. A little excited for the responsibility of warming up the audience waiting for the legends of the genre, but they are doing very well, alternating sandy huge riffs, psychedelic arpeggios and warm engaging vocal melodies. The road taken is the right one (as evidenced by the latest album Reverently Heading into Nowhere) in order to rival the older brothers in the future.

Ufomammut let me enter their bedroom to make me feel how the low frequencies make the walls tremble. Dazzling psychedelic films to amplify the stunning effect of music. They assure me that they did not fix my beer with any drugs... or maybe they say that just because they're afraid I could say something to mom?! I do not understand why glasses does not shatter under the gummy waves of distortion, which swells in a cloud of noise to fill every space, and from which only Vita robust drums manage to emerge, to show us rhythm and structure in the sound chaos. The most physical and groovy Ufomammut concert among those I attended to (and they are 7!). A band that looks into the eyes its audience with the self-confidence of those who have collected what they deserve, but also with the humility of those who feel that there is always room to learn even now. How not love a brother like that?

Then in the really doped brother's room, Electric Wizard. The one mom fears I would take as an example. Feedbacks introducing Witchcult Today riff (and that will accompany every moment of "silence", like a constant tinnitus induced by music listened to exaggerated volumes) are dense smoke of marijuana, through which I see clips of old horror, post apocalyptic or sex exploitation movies. After 25 years of continuous line-up changes, it's extraordinary to hear how Jus Oborn's band still sounds compact and overwhelming. Over time, a layer of dust (of hidden origin) covered the vomit with which the band had soiled its room between the late 90s and early 2000s, but the toxic moments continue to surface between a riff and the other. Spots of heavy psychedelia stain with acid colours the intense black of the sepulchral doom played by the band, as visionary fragments in a 60s horror movie. Far from being detoxified, the music of the electric big brother is so powerful and cohesive - even in the manipulation of dissonances and larsen effects - to seem, today, fully able to control his excesses. And thanks to perfectly balanced sounds, he gives me as a present one of his best concerts (tonight the fifth!).

Humulus – Reverently Heading into Nowhere

Humulus – Reverently Heading into Nowhere
(Taxi Driver, Oak Island Records, 2017)

Humulus – Reverently Heading into Nowhere
(Taxi Driver, Oak Island Records, 2017)

There are apparently natural cohabitations, yet for some reasons they cannot develop. It is the case of two fundamental genres of 90s alternative rock: grunge and stoner. Born and developed in very different contexts and with opposite poetic and visions of life, they seldom gave birth to a fruitful union, despite the obvious stylistic affinities. Rarely Seattle disillusioned introspection coexisted with the energy and "spirituality" of California deserts. So you are immediately impressed by Reverently Heading into Nowhere, second record of the Humulus in which Andrea Van Cleef warm deep voice (recalling Mark Lanegan as much as Mark Sandman) insinuates into pumped up gigantic riffs moving in slow motion in pure stoner doom style . An unexpected taste for melody in a genre often exclusively focused on groove and hallucinogenic power of psychedelic digressions (here reinterpreted with effective simplicity and sense of measure). These features are certainly not lacking in the music of the Lombard band, but they are enhanced by mature melancholy melodies that confirm how the two mentioned genres can live together with truly engaging results.

Humulus + Supernaughty - 17.02.2018 - Fuzz'N'Roll Fest - Cecina (LI)

Humulus + Supernaughty - 17.02.2018 - Fuzz'N'Roll Fest - Cecina (LI)

Humulus + Supernaughty - 02.17.2018 - Fuzz'N'Roll Fest - Cecina (LI)

Third chapter of Fuzz'N'Roll Fest with a high stoner content. Cool contrast to the wet and rainy day, yet not stopping the faithful listeners of the sandy red-hot sounds of Californian origin.

Opening Supernaughty, for the release party of their first album Vol. 1 (Argonauta Records). Straight for straight, the quartet from Livorno shoots its cartridges made of direct incisive songs, essentially stoner, but enriched by a great background of 70s rock and doom. What a pity for some problems with the voice (fluctuating volumes, which altered the performance and the continuity of the song), which did not do justice to the excellent performance of the recordings. Really excellent, instead, the solo guitar (Filippo Del Bimbo), with always refined and well played riffs, phrasings and solos. Perfect band to overheat the atmosphere of the evening.

Trio from Brescia/Bergamo, Humulus then further heightens the stoner level of the evening. Stoner yes, mighty and super-groovy. But also blazing blues passages and psychedelic dilatations with really seductive engaging sounds. There is definitely a step forward in the release of their second album Reverently Heading Into Nowhere (2017), which marked the maturation of a more personal and multifaceted sound and style. Guitar, bass and drums come out compact and powerful from the stage, overwhelming the audience as would the rhino and the elephant of their cover artworks. Pachydermish sounds, but also clean and clear in all their nuances. Perfect and really beautiful Andrea Van Cleef voice, whose warm and powerful timbre is perfectly suited to the different registers of Humulus songs, thus resulting at once mighty and full, but also scratchy and whispered.

And if at the end of the evening the rain was still there waiting for me, for us who were there under the stage, at least during those two hours of concert, rain and winter were gone.

Isaak + Humulus + Jussipussi – 13.02.2016 – Lo-Fi (Milano)

Isaak + Humulus + Jussipussi – 13.02.2016 – Lo-Fi (Milano)

Isaak + Humulus + Jussipussi – 02.13.2016 – Lo-Fi (Milano)

Heavy Psych Sounds Records is becoming one of the most interesting stoner rock Italian labels and it can be considered a quality guarantee for the genre: this is the reason why the release party of Sermonize, by Isaak, cannot be missed.
The first electric shock on Lo-Fi stage is generated by JussiPussi. Their stoner rock is direct and funny as Queens of the Stone Age one. The band owns groove, great riffs and an overflowing energy, and – thanks to the powerful sounds too – it cannot do other than excite the audience. If the singer voice – a little too clean and sometimes inaccurate – is the only flaw of their concert, the hardcore and amused attitude of the band in its entirety makes this aspect definitely not so relevant. Note of the evening: opening for Isaak, they play Explant with Boeddu at the voice as in their Greatest Tits…grand finale for their show!
Humulus stoner rock is not so direct, yet it is more dilated, with wide instrumental openings with psychedelic taste and some hints with southern aftertaste. But even in their setlist there are immediate and enthralling songs, closely related with Kyuss ones (sometimes maybe a little too much!). Mighty, dusty, hot, they insert great vocal and guitar melodies in a solid and groovy rhythmic session, showing the most rock and space side of the genre – in opposition to the alternative/punk side of JussiPussi and the metal one of Isaak. Great discovery!
The curse of the third band in Lo-Fi evenings affects also Isaak (after Mutoid Man and Giöbia): while the first two bands benefit from great sounds, during the first half of the show the band from Genova suffers a lot of problems with bass amp (at first absent, then so loud to engulf all the rest). Overcome the technical difficulties and calibrated the sounds to perfection, the band’s value fully emerges and imposes itself on everyone. Heavy and compact, halfway between Red Fang and Torche, Isaak have got their ace up in the sleeve in the extraordinary powerful – and expressive – voice of Giacomo Boeddu: a great weapon that in some ways makes them comparable to Zippo (another Italian band of absolute value). They beat really heavy and can be considered as one of the most interesting Italian bands in this genre. Perfect to excellently close an evening dedicated to the fattest and mighty rock.
