L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII

L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII
(Subsound Records, 2018)

Processo alchemico perfettamente riuscito.

L’Ira del Baccano – Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII
(Subsound Records, 2018)

It all starts here. The alchemical transformation takes place during two concerts in 2007 in Genzano. It is here that Loosin 'o' Frequencies become an instrumental band and capture this moment in a recording that only today, more than 10 years later, takes on physical form. And it is with this recording in its hands, in 2008, that the band decides to change its name in L'Ira del Baccano and to make its music available to everyone, in the liquid form of mp3 published online. Since then the recording of those concerts has solidified in the conscience of many fans of the underground, contributing to make L'Ira del Baccano one of the most interesting names as live act. The last, indispensable, transformation, allows us to insert in our discography, alongside the two studio albums, a physical copy of this precious document, to all effects the first brainchild of the Roman band. We cross the alchemical gate (Si non sedes is is an epigraph engraved on this monument hidden in the heart of Rome) to realize how much the band was already then mature to conceive what came later. That is a dilatation and deformation of heavy sounds, sometimes doom and sabbath influenced, in vast airy progressive suites with a fluid and iridescent structure, on the borders of space rock (echoes of Coma Divine and Space Ritual beyond the door). Transmutation of lead into gold, through free flowing jams. Music freed from genres limitations, able to absorb past and present, transforming them into an absolutely personal future. Perfectly successful alchemical process.

Hawkwind - Space Ritual

Hawkwind – Space Ritual
(United Artists Records, 1973)

Capolavoro.

Hawkwind – Space Ritual
(United Artists Records, 1973)

Psychedelic ritual needs to be lived: it cannot simply to be listened to. It is an experience that has to penetrate the body through each of the five senses and have to be shared so that your mind could extend up to the point to merge with the one of the hippie closer to you. Psychedelia is a mental music that needs physicality. This is the reason why the best psychedelic bands reached the maximum hallucinatory effect in their live shows, no matter how memorable their studio albums are. Trying to eternalize on records these events - reductively defined "concerts" - is obviously a nonsense. Yet some recordings own such a freedom and a fancy (unthinkable in studio sessions!) that elevate them amongst the best evidences of the history of these bands (and that can be considered like jewels for the ones, like me, not lucky enough to attend them). Space Ritual is certainly one of these (the live half of Ummagumma and Live/Dead are two others great examples). Recorded at the end of 1972, the first Hawkwind live album is an orgy where the hard rock frenzy is deformed in chaotic lysergic dilatations, a sci-fi trip reflecting the independent and really alternative mentality of the members of the band (points of reference of the Notting Hill commune, in London). With the entry of Lemmy Kilmister at the bass guitar, the spaceship driven by Dave Brock (guitar and voice) reaches its maximum creative splendour, marking the history of heavy music with a coloured and  amused bacchanal and laying - through punk attitude, progressive experimentations and assorted hallucinations - the foundations of every future commingling of heavy & psych. Masterpiece.

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars – The Motion Picture Soundtrack

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars – The Motion Picture Soundtrack
(RCA, 1983)

Come non volare lontano ascoltando All the Young Dudes, Moonage Daydream o Space Oddity?

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars – The Motion Picture Soundtrack
(RCA, 1983)

The premise is: this is not a review. I never thought about/of writing about David Bowie’s albums. Yet his passing, together with the feeling of emptiness, pushes me to look for a way to remember him.
Indeed I chose to write about an album which can not be properly said “album”, Anyway it is fundemental for me, because thanks to it I discovered David Bowie and his music, loving it and getting deeper and deeper into it (and to be correct, it was not the cd release I now own: it was a tape from a musicassette of the first release of 1983).
It is a live. It is a collection of his most beautiful songs of the 1969-1973 era and it includes 5 of the full-lenghts he released in those five years. It is conceived as a movie. It is definitely iconic. It is the last “act” of Ziggy Stardust: maybe the most relevant, long-living and beloved character embodied by David Bowie. Recorded during the unforgettable concert of July the 3rd 1973 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, the movie-concert (released only ten years later) is the climax and the point of no return of Ziggy-Bowie: the artist and the character – melt in one single entity – came together at the end of a journey as much fascinating as too heavy to be carried on. Bowie’s mask and armor, Ziggy has to come to his end to allow a rebirth, a reincarnation. Immortalizing this concert, this recording becomes his perfect, “megalomaniac” farewell.
In an impeccable sequence – starting with Hang on to Yourself / Ziggy Stardust, ending in emblematic way with Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide – the whole life of Ziggy Stardust unfolds in front of the listener. It is a perfect combination of pure rock, acoustic dilations and ballads. It is steeped in early 70s glam rock, it is proto-punk (its birth and explosion were imminent), and it seminal for many bands, with its anticipations of post-punk and darkwave. And then, how can anyone stand still while listening to Cracked Actor or Suffragette City? How can anyone keep his own feet on the (Earth) ground during All the Young Dudes, Moonage Daydream or Space Oddity? All this plus the added value of a grat live performance!
Infinite thanks to you Mr. Bowie: for your music, for your art, for the glimpses of you through your polyhedric transformations along your 50 years of career.
