VVitch Festival - 25.11.2018 - Circolo Magnolia (Milano)

VVitch Festival - 25.11.2018 - Circolo Magnolia (Milano)
[Frizzi 2 Fulci + Celeste + Belzebong + KEN Mode + Birds In Row + Coilguns + The Necromancers]

Sette i gruppi in cartellone.

Enormi.

VVitch Festival - 25.11.2018 - Circolo Magnolia (Milano)
[Frizzi 2 Fulci + Celeste + Belzebong + KEN Mode + Birds In Row + Coilguns + The Necromancers]

A common thread, and actually deeply black, runs through this festival at the end of November, hosted by Circolo Magnolia. Seven bands on the bill. Seven different ways to decline the darkness of the human soul. But a common feeling, a shared sensibility for what is buried in the darkest folds of existence.

It starts early, at 2.30 pm, with the French The Necromancers. A powerful kick-off, made of doom riffs accelerated by Iron Maiden school rides, with an important component of horrorific flavour. The quartet from Poitiers convinces and warms and entertains the still not numerous, but decidedly enthusiastic audience.

To follow Coilguns, with outbursts and ravings worthy of a straitjacket. The Swiss quartet is led by a histrionic and possessed Louis Jucker, who jumps from one side of the stage to the other, wandering mostly among the audience with whom he interacts incessantly. A noisy and sharp post hardcore, at breakneck speed, that does not spare power or anger, and that gives its best on stage. Great live revelation.

In hardcore/post hardcore area, the French Birds in Row alternate the faster and more violent part of the genre with almost post-rock openings, in which to take breath and get lost in reflections. Reflections that are often solicited by Bart Hirigoyen (voice and guitar), who talks with the audience, conveying messages that aim to indicate an alternative and a positive possibility, of a new and different humanity, able to overcome the horror and the suffering that permeate this world. Even in the pitch dark you can see nuances and look for a source of light.

KEN Mode are a deadly war machine. Their name is the abbreviation of Kill Everyone Now Mode, from Henry Rollins' book Get in the Van: On the Road With Black Flag, but it makes me think of Ken The Warrior - and I do not think it's a so forced association of ideas. The music of the trio from Winnipeg is a brutal and physical noise that overwhelms and annihilates, dyeing black and steel every surface on which it impacts. Surgical precision and incredible skill converge and support songs made of anger and violence, which enter you and dig deep. Gigantic.

Handbrake and gummy turn with the Poles Belzebong. And I can only confirm the good impressions of their concert last September at the Elav Stoner Open Air. Their sulphurous and "green light" doom, wrapped in clouds of smoke and without words, is a perfect trip in which to linger, swaying out of time on their Sabbathian and rotten riffs. Everything you could desire from stoner doom, and a little break from the ferocity of the rest of the festival line-up.

The French Celeste make us go deep into the bowels of a non-place, as much human as natural. Their red headlams are the only glimmer of hope in a fog full of despair and darkness. The impact is not that of a year ago in Bologna, but the strength of their music, of this perfect alchemy of post hardcore and black metal, is still irrepressible and hypnotic. A chthonic journey that we can not afford to lose.

And finally, something definitely not ordinary. Fabio Frizzi, at the helm of a mini-orchestra, pays homage to the horror master Lucio Fulci through some of the most beautiful soundtracks he composed for the Roman director's movies. Not only concert, but also "chat" with a composer who tells his passion, which coincides with his life's work. Sette note in nero, L'Aldilà... e tu vivrai nel terrore!, Paura nella città dei morti viventi are just some of the key moments of the set, which ends with an incredible encore (which I cannot understand why it was not part of the official setlist): the final theme of L'Aldilà. A concert that goes beyond music, becoming a story. A set that definitely separates from all the bands that preceded it, but that shares with them the universe of obscure images, settings and suggestions.

This first edition of VVitch Festival has had the ability and the merit to bring together under its name very interesting bands - varied from a stylistic point of view, but similar from a thematic one. An enterprise far from simple, and which also represented a sort of challenge for the audience, which tends to think in terms of genres and closed communities. The audience could certainly have been more numerous and the bill deserved it. But the participants were not there by chance and the palpable impression was that of listeners inclined to this project and who enjoyed from the first to the last note of this event. An important seed has been planted and the hope is that it will grow strong, nourished by darkness. Personally I will wait for the second edition in November 2019.

Belzebong – Light the Dankness

Belzebong – Light the Dankness
(self released, Emetic Records, Abraxas, 2018)

Belzebong – Light the Dankness
(self released, Emetic Records, Abraxas, 2018)

We have an idiomatic expression saying that the game is funny when it is short. Who still enjoys listening to all these stoner doom bands spending their time looking for marijuana-themed puns (rather than writing really original songs) and continually posing for dirty junkies, despite their music is now so well coded and socially accepted to be harmless? Me. Yes, I am one of those who still has fun. Because this music is like a pizza margherita: simple, known by everyone, but exquisite if done to perfection. I'm not looking for the surprise in a margherita: I'm looking for a known taste to spend a pleasant evening. With their third album the Polish Belzebong confirm that they can model this dough with skill (adding a bit of weed to flour, of course) making it properly "gummy" before cooking it. Four long instrumental tracks to which abandon ourselves without so many mental masturbations, cuddled by round heavy riffs and space solos, which will inevitably lead us to stunning. But before abandoning ourselves to clouds of smoke and insane laughter with friends, with its sinister and a bit paranoid gait à la "Goatsnake taking the bong from Electric Wizard", the opening track (The Bong of Eternal Stench) reminds us that if you mix too many substances you risk spending the evening cursing yourself. At the end of the pizza party we will not have started a revolution to solve the problems of our time, but we would certainly have had a blast with the absurd idea of planning it.

Elav Stoner Open Air Festival 2018 - Day 3

Elav Stoner Open Air Festival 2018 - Day 3
[Belzebong + Papir + Weedpecker + Dead Man's Blues Fuckers + The Black Lodge]

Southern rock e heavy blues a manetta.

Elav Stoner Open Air Festival 2018 - Day 3
[Belzebong + Papir + Weedpecker + Dead Man's Blues Fuckers + The Black Lodge]

Second edition for Elav Stoner Open Air Festival, and also this year I manage to be there, though only for Saturday. And it's a real pity! Because if the first edition had already been a great debut, this second one has outdone the previous one. An extra day and an even richer and more interesting bill, in a period of the year with a decidedly milder weather. With some important milestones: free entry and the excellent ELAV beer!

But let's talk about the bands. On this hot September day The Black Lodge are the first on stage. With a strong stoner doom influence and a direct ancestry from bands like Down and Corrosion of Conformity, the Venetian band has got a great groove and the impact of a more long-standing combo. Gillo Perotta's voice stands out: not only for its power, but also for its versatility and technique. Their first album is coming out by the end of this 2018 and I would say it is worth noting it on the agenda.

It is then the turn of a duo which is much more overwhelming than an entire blues orchestra. Only guitar & voice and drums for Dead Man's Blues Fuckers, but I would say that there is absolutely no need for anything else. Southern rock and heavy blues at full throttle. Some gags betraying Diego DeadMan Potron's past as one man band, but to boss around is the desert dust which entered the dark saloon, among beer and whiskey, guns and whores. Straight for straight, with no frills.

Weedpecker are the band that more than anything else I wanted to hear today. Last January, just released their third album (III, indeed), I was captured by this Polish quartet. And as soon as Elav Stoner Open Air announced their name in the billboard, I marked the date in red on my agenda. So much expectation can be very risky. I took the risk and I was right, because live Weedpecker are even more enthralling, exciting and psychedelic than on record. If each of their riffs or guitar and bass notes gives life to sonic spaces in which to get lost, leaving dilate space and time, their voices and their intertwining (always perfect) are like sirens for Ulysses, capturing, stunning and kidnapping you towards their world beyond the mirror. Look for them around, go and listen to them live and surrender yourself to this musical trip!

Another band for the first time live in Italy and in Stickman Records roster, Papir do not need voices to let us floating suspended in the vast architectures and in the wide landscapes built by their guitar, bass and drums. Essential as a power trio can be, but complex as only certain psychedelic krautrock can succeed to be. It seems like a long jam, with a defined beginning and an unknown unpredictable outcome, but that always hits the nail on the head. They, too, a great live discovery!

"High" final with a bang. Poles like Weedpecker and with a marked taste for the inflorescence of the hemp, Belzebong are decidedly heavier, more doom and more rotten of their countrymen. There is no space for words: their Sabbath and sulphurous riffs speak for themselves. Immersed in thick clouds of smoke, the waves of their hair move out-synchronously increasing the stunning naturally produced by their songs. "Follow the smoke toward the riff filled land" looks like the perfect motto for their music, which is even more powerful, muddy and inexorably overwhelming than on record.

With the darker and heavier side of stoner this day ends together with this second edition of Elav Stoner Open Air. The appointment is definitely for next year, with the hope that this winning formula remains unchanged and, if anything, that it can only better itself, like that of the recipes of the brewery hosting and giving its name to this fantastic festival.
