Devil Master – Satan Spits on Children of Light

Devil Master – Satan Spits on Children of Light
(Relapse Records, 2019)

Devil Master – Satan Spits on Children of Light
(Relapse Records, 2019)

Six kids dressed as demons in such a graceless, gaudy and unintentionally ridiculous way that they were certainly not helped by their mother for this (musical, as well as purely aesthetic) disguise. I imagine them out in the streets of Philadelphia on Halloween night, mocked by their peers. Their lo-fi style makes them losers in the eyes of 2019 bullies. But Relapse is the elder brother defending them and, after having reprinted the songs from their demos with the compilation Manifestations (2018), makes them debut with an album which seems to have been recorded at Uncle Creepy's home. Devil Master's tales from the crypt echo like the worst early 80s sonic nightmares, while mosquitoish distortions crumble the eardrums. But a veil of flanger, spread over the riffs like a spider web, softens the edges and makes the atmosphere vaguely psychedelic. In this fog colours are mixed without any respect for consonances, generating a chaos that possesses the fury of the Japanese hardcore and the bloodthirsty delirium of the first Mayhem, but also the melodic sensitivity of a post punk band (or that of a Hammer midnight movie). In this impulsive disharmony, typical of kids overflowing with creativity, lies the beauty of this absurd theater of horrors, absolutely perfect for Halloween night.

Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power

Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
(ATCO Records, 1992)

Un pugno dritto in faccia.

Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
(ATCO Records, 1992)

A punch right into the face. Direct and violent as a shot in a furious mosh pit.  Developing Cowboys from Hell intuitions, Pantera definitely walk away from classical thrash metal and compose an innovative tribute to the rage, with hardcore expressivity and metal heaviness. Phil Anselmo is a sort of Henry Rollins' heavy metal version: massive, imposing, physical. Dimebag guitar sound is compressed, solid, compact  and - together with the enthralling combination of Vinnie Paul drums and Rex bass guitar - increases the value of the mammoth riffing. Before then, no heavy music had got such rhythmic dynamism, immediacy and groove, without losing aggression. An unrestrainable rolling stone: colossal in its mid tempos, devastating in its acceleration. A point of no return for heavy sounds. One of the most influent album of the nineties.

Corrosion of Conformity – Blind

Corrosion of Conformity – Blind
(Relativity, 1991)

“Some man recently asked me how it was possible for me to speak of disparity and injustice in the world when I’m a middle-class, white male. You don’t have to eat shit to know that it tastes bad.” K. Agell
Abrasivo, acido, incazzato, potente e travolgente, Blind è tutto ciò che i Metallica post Black Album avrebbero voluto suonare, senza però riuscirci.

“Some man recently asked me how it was possible for me to speak of disparity and injustice in the world when I’m a middle-class, white male. You don’t have to eat shit to know that it tastes bad.” K. Agell
In the early 90s Corrosion of Conformity are a new band. Only Reed Mullin's drums and Woody Weatherman's guitar remained in place. Yet the violent energy and the absence of compromises typical of the hardcore and thrash metal of the beginning are still there, and not only in the lyrics of the new singer Karl Agell ("we are looking for a singer halfway between James Hetfield, Ian Gillian and H.R. of Bad Brains" the ad said). Now, however, they have a completely different form. They are compressed and condensed in Sabbathian blues-style boulders and in outbursts worthy of the four horsemen. This very high pressure has changed the contours up to the point of generating riffs in which energy can not be contained, bolting away uncontrollably. The outcome is an extraordinary groove, running wildly through the mid tempo of the newly arrived Pepper Keenan's six-string. Groove which represents the seed from which most of the heavy music of the 90s will be born (whether you are talking about stoner, sludge, groove metal or grunge). Abrasive, acid, pissed off, powerful and overwhelming, Blind is all that post Black Album Metallica would have liked to play, but without succeeding.

Sepultura - Arise

Sepultura - Arise
(Roadrunner Records, 1991)

Sepultura - Arise
(Roadrunner Records, 1991)

Arise is the point of equilibrium in Sepultura career. Highest peak of death/thrash metal sounds of the band, it is also the beginning of a deep research of Brazilian tribal atmospheres and rhythms. The result is a masterpiece, evil as Slayer thrash metal, muddy as Obituary death metal, dirty as Amebix crust punk, "spiritual" as a dark tribal rite. Roadrunner label had big expectations, therefore the album was recorded at Morrisound Recording in Tampa (first time Sepultura recorded an album outside Brazil), one of the epicenters of death metal revolution. Arise contributed to the revolution with an innovative sound, far from American, English and Swedish ones.  Arise is dusty as hands digging in the earth, in search of roots, far from a surface dominated by apocalyptic visions. A riot act against an unfair and violent reality.

Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black

Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black
(Century Media, 1999)

All play dead.

Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black
(Century Media, 1999)

All play dead. A suicide opens wide the doors of desperation and the tragedy destroys every dream about the future and every certainty with whom the past had been built. Impotence facing our frailty. And rage becomes the only, useless, deliverance. Recurring obsessive nightmares amongst delicate moments of solitude with our own ghosts. Dreaming Neon Black is a concept album about self-destruction magnetism after the death of every God. Deliberately theatrical in his interpretation, Warrel Dane is inspired by a story that involved him. And his passionate impetus we can breathe in every song. Gothic atmospheres, acid melodies and grinding dissonances are protagonists as much as furious intricate riffs or liquid arpeggios making this album a unique jewel in heavy metal history.

Mutoid Man - War Moans

Mutoid Man – War Moans
(Sargent House, 2017)

Mutoid Man – War Moans
(Sargent House, 2017)

American talk shows have in unintentional foolishness their reason to exist. The (bad) taste for trash of the greatest part of viewers is a guarantee of high ratings. It was not possible to create the first heavy metal talk show, based on deliberate foolishness, desecrating spirit, and thrash (not trash!) music, in any other place than United States. And could such a show have a better resident band than Mutoid Man? No way. Because it's really hard to find a band that can take itself so little seriously (and that can take so little seriously its inspirational musical genre) as Mutoid Man. And at the same time able to kick ass as much as they did. So watching Two Minutes to Late Night is instructive to figure out how out of their mind these guys are, as well as listening to their third record - War Moans - is instructive to figure out how much they enjoy playing heavy and fast. Maybe less crazy, liquid and unpredictable than its beautiful predecessor (Bleeder), War Moans is even more fired in the face, and has got an even higher concentrate of heavy metal. If Bleeder was the lap of death on a roller coaster, War Moans is the fall at full speed (with Dave Grohl disguised by Dave Mustaine on the seat at our side). From the bonecrusher thrash metal of the title track (with a wonderful solo by Marty Friedman) to the downtuned riffs of Date with the Devil, passing through the dissonances of Wreck and Survive (guest Chelsea Wolfe's tenebrous voice) the trio (featuring Steve Brodsky of Cave In and Ben Koller of Converge) create a hyper-funny cabaret show where metal sacredness is unhorsed and bared, without losing power and energy, yet rather acquiring a truly unique personality in heavy music world. A band of nerds, fanatics of that metal listened during adolescence, with such a sense of irony and open mentality, that could match a fit of anger at full speed with a catchy chorus, heavy blows typical of headbangers with clean voices typical of demonic music infants.

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2017 – Day 3

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2017 – Day 3
Tau Cross + Macabre + Birds in Row + Marnero + Zeit + Mercy Ties + Restos Humanos

Disintegrate Your Ignorance Fest 2017 – Day 3
Tau Cross + Macabre + Birds in Row + Marnero + Zeit + Mercy Ties + Restos Humanos
08.06.2017 - Giavera del Montello (TV)

What a DYI would be without a tornado and a flood? At least one day must be "damaged" by bad weather in line with tradition. That the day is turning to the apocalypse is clear when, in the midst of the lunch at Birrificio Pedavena in Feltre, a monstrous wind raises a dust storm, and before it starts to rain, all the customers of the brewery (including the two of us!) commit to hold the tent over their heads so that this is not wiped away. More or less at the same time, the same film is on stage at Giavera del Montello. Mindful of last year's disaster, the festival organizers decide to run right away to shelter, moving all the scheduled concerts indoor, inside Benicio Live Gigs.

We enter on the first notes of Restos Humanos. The trio plays an old school death metal, crude and malicious, with some hint of raw grindcore. Perhaps we are misled by the singer's geographical origin (Colombia). Or perhaps the dirty perverse violence typical of South American death metal is really present in their music. Anyway, really not bad as an appetizer!
Meanwhile, the Sun shines out, almost as if it was making fun of the precautions taken by the organizers. But who knows weather instability of Montello, he knows that one can never declare victory.

Mercy Ties, which were expected to be opener of this last day, get on the stage as second band, due to the bad weather causing them a delay while on the road to the venue. Their post hardcore is characterized by sudden accelerations and continuous changes of direction, almost in math rock style. Hypercinetics, not only musically, but also from the point of view of their attitude, jump and pace up and down continuously, without any intention of keeping inside themselves their energy. At times, this ongoing demonstration of "energy incontinence" seems a little forced, but musically they really are a hurricane.

The Venetian Zeit insert vocal lines of death metal roots in a musical context similar to the most nervous post hardcore. The coordinates are similar to those of the previous band, but the whole sounds more calibrated, balanced and straightforward, less unpredictable and imaginative. Really effective.
In the meantime, distros have been re-set up in the outdoor area, hoping the bad weather is really gone away. But the black clouds approaching say the opposite, and indeed...

As Marnero are about to play, the first drops begin to fall, and within thirty seconds all the audience is inside the venue. Here is the sound of Malora. First riff, and the storm (so many times told by the band from Bologna in its lyrics) rages. Thunders, lightnings and flood outside. Thunders, lightnings and musical flood inside. The power of the songs by JD Raudo & co is not just in the tubes of their amplifiers and in their riffs overwhelming the listener. Their power is also in their words and in that vein of melody running through their songs, and that can only shake you in. Also their new track is beautiful. And when they come to the end of the set, Malora flies away and the clear returns as if the storm was part of the concert. Amazing.

And so it is the time of the French Birds in Row. Their concert is loud, fast and violent. They play more or less half hour, but in that half hour they concentrate, compress and release a really awesome fury, energy and skill. There is all the essence of hardcore, but also many flashes out of the box, opening to spaces of breath and melody, opposed to convulsive nervous rhythms. Really impressive.

The passage to the Macabre is a bit abrupt and flooring. The most amazing thing about this Chicago trio is the irrepressible desire to be on that stage (as well as any other stage, you would say!) and the enviable - and not at all to be taken for granted - understanding and synergy. 32 years of career together, with no change in the line up, are something almost unique, as it is their style in a certain sense, inserting the most unlikely influences on a fundamentally thrash metal basis. Black humor and assorted absurdities! Beyond the purely musical side, it's impossible not to have fun with them, who rejoice the enthusiasm of the fist of fans singing all the songs of the setlist and who - loudly acclaimed - also play an encore (they were looking forward to play!).

After the usual vegan dinner, it's time for Tau Cross. The expectation for this band was high, and this is probably the reason why we are not so satisfied in the end. The high technical level of the band is undeniable. And certainly in their music they try to blend the different backgrounds of the members (among these Away - Voivod - and Rob Miller - Amebix). But our impression is that the sum of the parts does not exceed the value of the individual components. Indeed, the combo published by the famous Relapse proposes a rather classic metal, with some variations on the theme related to the stratification of personal influences, tendentially in post-punk and industrial direction. Furthermore, in our view, the choice of ultra-compressed sounds tend to penalize even the enjoyment of the most successful parts. On top of everything stands the voice of Rob (The Baron) Miller, which is perhaps the most distinctive feature of the band. We admit that we feel a bit disappointed, because Tau Cross were certainly one of the bands we were most curious about in this DYI edition.

Thus it ends this three days in Montello. Rich in heat and sweat, but also splashed by a half storm. Rich and heterogeneous in the bands, with many confirmations, a half disappointment and many interesting discoveries. The balance is positive and, if good things come in three, we are looking forward to the next edition bill!

Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss

Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
(Def American Recordings, 1990)

Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
(Def American Recordings, 1990)

Thrash metal reaches the apex of notoriety in 1990 - year that also represents the end of an era for this kind of music. While Megadeth build a bridge between 80s classical and 90s technical metal and Pantera revolutionize and modernize the genre, Slayer compose the funeral hymn of a musical movement. Seasons in the Abyss is not a revolutionary album, but a mature one, a perfect representation of a musical genre close to its own death. It explores the two extremes of Slayer music: evil and violence. Being impossible to reproduce Reign in Blood fury, the greatness of this album is not in its violence (although War Ensemble is a perfect war machine!), but in its gloomy atmospheres and dissonant melodies, more dreadful and evil than South of Heaven ones. Great mid tempo riffs combined with sick atmosphere represent one of thrash highest points, and its funeral at the same time.

Pantera - Cowboys from Hell

Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
(ATCO Records, 1990)

Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
(ATCO Records, 1990)

Futuristic Cowboys from Hell intro - a groovy riff that rises from a surreal flanger effect to a hyper-compressed sound - announces the revolution. As a lightning, Pantera reinvent heavy music in a while. Destroyed their past - characterized by street glam and hard rock sounds - Pantera begin to destroy also 80s heavy metal in order to recreate it. Judas Priest sharpness and Metallica heaviness are still here,  but the approach is direct as never before. Heavy Metal is cleaned from epic emphasis, and what remains is rage and energy in hardcore attitude. Mechanical riffs and “stop and go” rhythmic create a groovy music that fits perfectly with multiform Phil Anselmo voice: penetrating as a screamer’s one, deep as a crooner’s one, furious as a pissed off hardcore boy’s one. Pantera and producer Terry Date create a new sound that will be the starting point of heavy music of the nineties.

Testament + Runover – 29/07/2016 - The Jungle (Cascina, PI)

Testament + Runover – 29/07/2016 - The Jungle (Cascina, PI)

Niente lieto fine.

Testament + Runover – 07/29/2016 - The Jungle (Cascina, PI)

Once upon a time there was young metalhead. At the end of the last millennium, surrounded by the nu metal horde, he still hoped that some of the historical thrash metal bands came to his rescue. Indeed Testament released a masterpiece like The Gathering and they also announced a gig close to his home (at the Ciak, in Cascina). Salvation seemed almost reached. But then the concert was canceled. No happy ending.

New millennium, more than 15 years later. Testament give a second chance to that patient metalhead. Also this time misfortune rages and there is the risk that concert may be canceled. But this time metal gods prevail. This time the concert took place. The happy ending is deserved.

The early start of the event at The Jungle is Rusty Nails classic heavy metal. But I am in a line to grab beer and hot dog, and so I lose their show.

Then, with the beer in my hand, I approach the stage to listetn to Runover. Their groovy metal is funny and the four musicians well know how to entertain the audience thanks to the perfect combination of powerful dynamic music and amused approached. If from the musical point of view we are near to Pantera (even though riffs are more hard rock and heavy metal oriented instead of being southern rock tasted), the singer has assimilated Faith No More and early Korn lesson, with his vocal lines focused on the enhancing of the groove of the band.

When the lawn is finally crowded with metalheads from different generations it is time for Testament. Since their attack - Over the Wall - it immediately becomes clear that the band has got plenty of energy to unleash and they immediately prove to be able to blow it up before the audience. If the technical expertise was to be expected given the names involved (Steve Di Giorgio and Gene Hoglan accompany the historical Chuck Billy, Eric Peterson and Alex Skolnick), the energy was not to be taken for granted. Indeed, in the only of their concert I attended to (2006), they played with amazing ability, yet with a little too much coldness and without the needed violence (except for Chuck Billy!). On the contrary tonight their compactness is extraordinary and blows follow one another in sort of bursts, instigating a wild mosh. With an overwhelming vocal performance, Chuck Billy once again proves to be a volcano in constant eruption, while Skolnick (which in the other gig appeared detached as a session musician) is absolutely deeply involved in the music of the band, playing a series of really memorable solos and phrasings. If in D.N.R. the band can not re-create the wall of sound erected during recordings, in the end it is really a venial sin because the peaks achieved by Disciples of the Watch, The New Order and Over the Wall are undeniable. After more than 15 years after that missed show, an amazingly massive 3 Days of Darkness succeeds in bringing peace to that young (now aged!) metalhead in love with The Gathering

Vektor - Terminal Redux

Vektor – Terminal Redux
(Earache, 2016)

Vektor - Terminal Redux
(Earache, 2016)

How was it possible to conceive such an incredible thrash metal album out of the 80s? You need a spaceship capable of traveling at a speed such as to bend space - time,  projecting itself both into the golden age of skinny jeans, basketball sneakers and fringes and into a still unknown future. It is clear that Vektor own such a spaceship and it is parked in their rehearsal room: otherwise you would not be able to think of an album such as Terminal Redux is. Pure progressive thrash metal. And here "progressive" does not only mean songs with ultra-complex constantly changing structure: it also - and mostly - means desire of (both melodic and rhythmic) research. Decreased the level of ferocity of the last two amazing  albums, the four space cowboys (from Arizona, but now based in Philadelphia) venture into an unexplored planet in which Cynic (Traced in Air) hypnotic spirals perfectly mix together with the most frenzied Voivod architectures, accelerating and decelerating with the same fluidity and easiness of a 70s prog band (indeed you can feel subtle reflections and hints of Rush and Genesis). Completely get lost under a rain of guitar phrasings or into openings with the fascination of the deepest abyss: this is the "Space Odissey" conceived by Vektor.

Black Breath - Slaves Beyond Death

Black Breath - Slaves Beyond Death
(Southern Lord, 2015)

Black Breath - Slaves Beyond Death
(Southern Lord, 2015)

First instruction for use: play Slaves Beyond Death vinyl at 45 rpm, otherwise you would have the impression of listening to a sludge album instead of a death metal one. Second instruction for use: do not be surprised if listening to this music at 45 rpm it would be evident how much sludge metal have learned from the very first death metal. After all we are talking about old school death metal, something raw and primitive in which bones-grinding riffs face cavernous slowdowns whose depth is amplified by lowered tuning. Fast, often devastating, rhythmics sometimes turn into ultra-heavy hammer blows. Embedded within the walls of muddy distortions, melodies sound dissonant and putrid. Together with the throaty guttural voice, all these are distinctive features of the early death metal before it directed itself towards surgical precision and prog melodic ambitions (these last reinterpreted by Black Breath in the final Chains of the Afterlife – a dissonant acid instrumental track showing how much this band is able to make visceral even the most majestic side of the genre). Produced by Kurt Ballou (Converge), the third full-lenght of this Seattle band is an extraordinary return to the origins, a reinterpretation of the early works by Obituary, Death and Entombed in the light of the sludge hurricane of these last years. An album with all the potential to last over time, as the masterpieces of its inspiring fathers.

Megadeth - Rust in Peace

Megadeth - Rust in Peace
(Capitol Records, 1990)

Megadeth – Rust in Peace
(Capitol Records, 1990)

The fourth Megadeth album is the last, and definitive, step in thrash metal evolution. Before grunge phenomenon sweeps away hard rock sounds of that era, and Black Album rewrites mainstream music rules, Megadeth reach the top with an hyperkinetic roller coaster, completely crazy and cocaine addicted, in pure 80s life style. Fast and complex, Rust in Peace music is uncontrollable but technically flawless, raw but mature. Dave Mustaine enthralling riffs - together with Dave Ellefson and Nick Menza groovy rhythmic - create a furious and fluid combination, enriched by Marty Friedman wonderful solos. Mustaine overflowing creativity and Friedman melodic sensitivity are the main features of this album: perfect swansong of the 80s, forerunner of progressive/technical heavy metal of the 90s.

Coroner + Acid Death + Sofisticator - 07.02.2016 - The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

Coroner + Acid Death + Sofisticator - 07.02.2016 -  The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

1^ lezione: Voivod (Estragon, Bologna – 17/11/2015)
2^ lezione: Vektor (Exenzia, Prato - 27/11/2015)
3^ lezione: Coroner (The Cage Theatre, Livorno – 07/02/2016)

Coroner + Acid Death + Sofisticator - 02.07.2016 -  The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

Basic course in 3 lessons on the evolution of thrash metal, from raw, funny sound for pimply, drunk nerds to dystopian, sci-fi, complex music for pimply nerds addicted to Commodore-64 and post apocalyptic b-movies.
Lesson #1: Voivod (Estragon, Bologna – 11/17/2015)
Lesson #2: Vektor (Exenzia, Prato - 11/27/2015)
Lesson #3: Coroner (The Cage Theatre, Livorno – 02/07/2016)

The evening at The Cage is opened by Sofisticator and their old school thrash metal assault. Filthy and fast as the genre needs, their songs introduce the headbanging ritual for all the longhaired metalheads. Even though they do not revolutionize the genre, the band from Firenze (featuring some members of Sulphur) impresses and entertains. Heartly reccomended to lovers of these sounds.

Then Acid Death – and from their very first chord they saturate the eardrums with too compressed sounds and too digital distorsions for their thrash/death setlist. Things go better when they play their Meshuggah/Fear Factory-like futuristic, post-industrial songs: nothing new on the horizon, yet at least songs are non damaged by poor sounds.

Finally the actual lesson. Coroner are one of the leading authorities in this field, and they offer clear evidence of this with a great show in which impact and energy are never choked by the technical complexity of the songs. In full respect of the commonplace on Swiss, Coroner are really extremely precise: yet above all they show power, dynamism and infinite creativity. Fast oubursts, mechanical/industrial groovy mid tempo, convoluted – yet enthrolling – rhythmic mazes. Tommy T. Baron solos and the prog, experimetal attitude of melodies are evidence of how influential Coroner were in giving new shapes to thrash metal (new shapes that have become almost usual from the second half of 90s, thanks to bands such as Meshuggah). The uncontainable, Helmet-like energy of some passages tells us how far they went from the boundaries of the genre. After their reunion in 2010 they have not yet released the sequel of Grin (1993) and they are “simply” playing memorable concerts, like this one at The Cage. Considering the high quality of their music and performance, the hope for a new album becomes almost a need.

I really hope that this mini-course on prog, sci-fi thrash metal will be followed by a second level of the same great quality of the first (hopefully with a beautiful lesson by Meshuggah)!
