1990. A Selection of 20 Albums.

1990. L'anno in cui i Sonic Youth aprono una crepa. Attraverso quella crepa la musica indipendente si avventura in un universo fino a quel momento sconosciuto. Prima che questa ferita faccia crollare il muro di separazione tra i due mondi, c'è il 1990. Un anno simbolo. Cesura fra due decenni tanto importanti, quanto diversi. Anche musicalmente. Nell'anno che fa da spartiacque con la sua cifra bella tonda, il confine fra i vari generi è davvero labile. Questi sono solo venti fra i molti album significativi usciti in questo millesimo. Come sempre sono stati scelti fra quelli che abbiamo e che abbiamo maggiormente ascoltato. E come si usa chiudere le serie, anche questa è aperta al classico finale: "to be continued..."

1990. The year Sonic Youth open up a crack. Through that crack independent music ventures into a universe unknown until then. 1990 is there, right before this wound leads to the collapse of the separation wall between the two worlds. A symbolic year. Break between two decades as much important as much different. Also musically. In the year that acts as a watershed with its beautiful round figure, the boundary between the various genres is really evanescent. These are just twenty of the many significant albums released in this year. As always, they were chosen from those we own and that we have listened to up to the point of wearing them out. And as series are usually closed by their authors, this is also open to the classic close: "to be continued..."

Daydream Nation è stato un terremoto nella carriera dei Sonic Youth. Il successo dell'album presso la critica attirò l'interesse delle major e così - all'improvviso - uno dei simboli del rock indipendente americano si ritrovò faccia a faccia con la perdita della sua libertà. L'album successivo - Goo - è immediato come nessun altro album dei Sonic Youth prima di allora: e così fu da molti considerato come un tradimento degli ideali indipendenti. Non è chiaro quanto l'influenza della Geffen abbia trasformato la musica dei Sonic Youth, ma è - adesso - evidente quanto Goo abbia trasformato il rock alternativo. Il controllo delle dissonanze e la loro integrazione in brani punk rock era una caratteristica dei Sonic Youth dai tempi di Sister, ma la capacità di riconciliare sperimentazione ed energia allo stato puro raggiunse il suo vertice più alto proprio con Goo. Diretto, immediato e potente, Goo è incentrato sulle melodie e sulla struttura delle canzoni. Un precursore dell'esplosione dell'alternative rock a venire.

Daydream Nation was an earthquake in Sonic Youth career. The critical acclaim of that album attracted the interest of major labels, and so - quickly - a symbol of American independent rock had to face with its loss of freedom. The following album - Goo - is easy listening as no other Sonic Youth release since then: so it was considered as a betrayal of independent ideals. We don’t know how much Geffen influence had transformed Sonic Youth music, but we now understand how much Goo transformed alternative rock. Dissonance control and its integration in punk rock songs was a feature of Sonic Youth music since Sister, but the capacity to reconcile experimentation with pure energy reached its highest peak in Goo. Direct, immediate and powerful, Goo is focused on melodies and songs structure. A forerunner of the alternative rock explosion near to come.
