Desertfest Antwerp 2017 - Day 1

Desertfest Antwerp 2017 - Day 1
[Radio Moscow + Lowrider + All Them Witches + Caronte + Kaleidobolt]

Desertfest Antwerp 2017 - Day 1
[Radio Moscow + Lowrider + All Them Witches + Caronte + Kaleidobolt]

It's great to be back after an exact year at a festival that you loved so much. Even more if you think that this bill surpasses even the incredible one of last year. Without mentioning the fact that it was almost a trouble to be able to arrive, and in fact I attend the first day basically alone, with the exception of Radio Moscow.

Maybe because it is called Desertfest and perhaps this has its influence, but the weather is beautiful, it's hot and in mid-October I find myself walking to the Trix with the t-shirt and the sun dazzling me. I took the wristband before the opening hour and I am among the first to enter, with confetti to inaugurate what will turn out to be a glorious 3 days.

I immediately grab up the t-shirt of the event and, beer in my hand, I head toward the still semi-empty garden, that soon begins to get crowded with enthusiasts from all over the world. A passage from the Vulture Stage where Kaleidobolt are inaugurating the festival with their proggy psychedelia, with strong seventies flavours and the taste of a jam, and then I head to the top floor.

The first band I focus on is the Italian Caronte who "baptize" the Canyon Stage with its doom ritual, complete with a "blessing" with incense. With their new album - YONI - in upcoming release, the quartet from Parma makes me enter this festival in the darkest and most occult way, through powerful riffs of Electric Wizard inspired doom, from which Dorian Bones powerful emphatic voice distinctively stands out.

However All Them Witches are the ones to get me into the heart of this festival with their vibrations and their incredible groove! Psychedelia, space rock, blues and amazing riffs. The one hour of concert of the Nashville band runs away in a moment, dragged by the quick compact and - sometimes - fragmented rhythmics, with lysergic openings that "dope" the listener even without the help of "additives". A band able to blend together its many influences with an experimental attitude, the result of which is not the simple stratification of its many souls, but a personal and pushing thing, which in the live dimension, even more than on recordings, bewitches the listener. For me, band of the day!

The time of a food-beer-cigarette break in the lively outdoor area, and back in the Desert Stage for the Swedish Lowrider. With only one album in their career (Ode to Io, recorded in 1999 and remastered and reissued this year), the Karlstad quartet has the ability to overheat Trix main stage with its powerful, direct rock stoner of Kyuss descent, made of catchy riffs and refrains that get immediately imprinted into the mind.

Finally, always on the Desert Stage (which I has become immediately fond of!), is the turn of Radio Moscow. All the energy of an infinite jam session, made of the sounds of the 60s/70s, animated by blues and hard rock on the one hand, and psychedelic - with prog hints - on the other. And with a warm powerful voice, rich in personality. Californian origins of this power trio shows themselves clearly, and there is also a wink at the sounds of the desert, in what is ultimately a concert with no pauses of reflection, which runs at breakneck speed through chases of riffs and improvisations on the edge of solos. A great final for this first day!
