Gorilla Pulp + The Re-Stoned + Pretty Lightning + Ananda Mida feat. Conny Ochs - 11.05.2019 - Desert Fox Fest V- Circolo Bikers (Cadeo, PC)

Gorilla Pulp + The Re-Stoned + Pretty Lightning + Ananda Mida feat. Conny Ochs - 11.05.2019 - Desert Fox Fest V- Circolo Bikers (Cadeo, PC)

I Pretty Lightning, dicevo.

Gorilla Pulp + The Re-Stoned + Pretty Lightning + Ananda Mida feat. Conny Ochs - 05.11.2019 - Desert Fox Fest V- Circolo Bikers (Cadeo, PC)

How did I get to the Desert Fox Fest? Why am I wearing a Scialpi (or Shalpy) t-shirt? To find an answer to these questions we should retrace the journey that begins when some shady guys plan an alien abduction to my damage and then run me around for two days eating and drinking, through breathtaking views in mystical and rock n 'roll places. A journey which is complicated to retrace, and of which Desert Fox Fest is one of the - absolutely unexpected - parts. Without internet connection, while a flood is about to fall, I find myself thrown into Piacenza surroundings at a festival which is revolutionized due to bad weather. Bewildered by all this unpredictability, I let myself be carried like a child to the rides.

What will be the first attraction? American singer on really fluid and ever-changing psychedelic hard rock: Ananda Mida with Conny Ochs. Really?! The fact that  I have a really different memory of them depends on the fact that I was tossed around all day like I was inside a (full of alcohol) washing machine or it is due to the fact they have changed from their 2017 concert?! With a charismatic frontman, who looks like a crossbreed between the erotic dreams of 70s and 90s adolescents, their sinuous flowing music loses something in lysergic power, and acquires frenzy and unpredictability. The singer's clean voice is a rain that has washed away some of the desert dust, but which, at the same time, has improved rock charm.

Of the German Pretty Lightning I listened to only a few songs because the storm had calmed down and I took advantage of it to eat something (and drink a little more, oh well) in the outside area where the main stage should have been, unfortunately sacrificed due to force majeure. Despite the upheavals (some bands have been canceled), the festival is still cool, well organized and with a relaxed friendly atmosphere. Pretty Lightning, I said. Only a few songs ... but what kind of songs! For me, who I am a great Black Angels fan, the garage psychedelia freed by the German duo is hilarious. An essential and dynamic drummer, a sea of echoes and reverbs and a voice that looks like a cat under acid. Absolutely to be seen live again!

Fear and loathing at Desert Fox Fest with a picture under Padre Pio statue, which stands out in the middle of the town square (and to which counterposes an absurd Batman fountain in the concert area), and then we're back in. The Re-Stoned first notes are enough to find ourselves catapulted into a parallel world where Russian spaceships fly through the gorges of the American Grand Canyon. The Moscow trio fixed the space equipment that escaped the Soviet collapse with Western methods. Typically American methods such as stoner riffs and desert dilations, but above all European ones, such as progressive engineering studies (see the amazing cover of Red by King Crimson). A hyperkinetic, technically terrific, drummer contributes to make brainy - yet always enthralling - the music of the band, which perfectly fits into the psych/prog genre made of reworked jams so dear to Monkey3, My Sleeping Karma and Yuri Gagarin, even if with a greater interest in riffs and power, and a lower predisposition to hypnotic and obsessive repetitions. Like any good psychedelic band even The Re-Stoned do not hint at finishing the fuel of their spaceship and transport us for an infinite/indefinite time on the most distant galaxies. Great discovery!

After The Re-Stoned interstellar journeys, we return to the Earth, with a sweaty party-loving afterparty. Gorilla Pulp are tonight's perfect closure. Their alcoholic and direct hard rock needs a couple of tracks to warm up, but then it literally catches fire. Thin Lizzy guitar duels and beautiful groovy mighty riffs (reminiscent of Kadavar and Duel's reinterpretation of the 70s) are the best thing ever to finish with a bang! Their set flows in a flash and leaves us with the feeling of a big party that doesn't want to end. And now, what will be the next stop of this journey?

Candlemass – The Door to Doom

Candlemass – The Door to Doom
(Napalm Records, 2019)

Candlemass – The Door to Doom
(Napalm Records, 2019)

There are all the signs that predict an epic failure. The Door to Doom promises to be self-referential and nostalgic starting from the cover, recycled from their most famous album. The return of Johan Langquist, who was the voice of that album in 1986 and today is again on the microphone of the Swedish combo after years of complete absence from the musical scene, is an even more evident hint. I insert the album into the stereo with the chills (of fear) on my back and, in a moment, in front of a majestic guitar interweaving, my prejudices begin to collapse. Then, when Langquist's voice climbs up on riffs as mighty as the columns of an old church, the chills on my back are those of emotion. The singer is really formidable and his voice - clean but at the same time muscular - has no problem at all in entering the grand and fascinating musical structure erected by veterans of metal architecture. In the wide aisles built by Candlemass over the course of many years of career, echoes of the past continue to resound, but the destiny to which the new wide-open door leads is far from being written. Tony Iommi's blessing - special guest of one of the songs of the album - marks the epic return of Candlemass, wiping out any bias of failure.

All Them Witches + Swedish Death Candy - 27.04.2019 - Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

All Them Witches + Swedish Death Candy - 27.04.2019 - Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

Bella scoperta!

All Them Witches + Swedish Death Candy - 04.27.2019 - Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

All of Them Witches is the book that Rosemary Woodhouse consults to dispel any doubts about the nature of her disturbing neighbours. A book of witchcraft that surely the Nashville band, whose name is inspired by the mentioned cursed book, uses to evoke and then be possessed by spirits when performing live. The legends of those who attended their concert (Deserfest Antwerp 2017) spoke clearly, and we are gathered here tonight to confirm those stories.

Also Swedish Death Candy, openers of this evening, show some kind of possession, because their live music releases an energy that is much more contained on record. Among the amusing rock stoner riffs psychedelic melodies of rainbow colors, juicy like lysergic candies, are dripping. A drummer losing his drumsticks a couple of times per song - but without ever lowering the level of groove - shows how much surgical precision (unlike energy!) has got a relative importance in this musical genre. And the energy certainly does not lack to the London band, which in its show increases the rate of Queens of the Stone Age decreasing that of Black Angels. Great discovery!

But those who really transform themselves, compared to what they do in studio, are All Them Witches. Although their records are nothing short of extraordinary, live this trio seems to be possessed by spirits. No evil spirits though. In fact, even in the most shady and autumnal moments, their psychedelic rock is warm, enveloping, vibrant. In short: deep and lively. The spirits returned to life tonight are those of 70s psychedelic hard rock (Ben McLeod's guitar takes on the appearance of Jimmy Page's one) and 90s alternative rock (deep and wearily singsonging Charles Michael Parks Jr voice smells of Morphine). However, we are not at a seance that merely awakens the dead, but rather a real revival of the spirit of rock, in new forms. After a couple of warm-up songs (the amazing Diamonds struggles a bit to open itself), the concert literally takes off. The wall of sound raised by the three musicians is the most impressive we could expect from a stoner band, just as the creativity of the many improvised phrasings is a jungle of ideas in which even the best jamming bands would get lost and embarrassed. Not to mention the groove, constantly present even in the most suffused or dilated moments, proving how much the sense of rhythm is innate in this trio, even when they hide in a fog of noises. The legends have been confirmed: All Them Witches are the most lively and exciting band that can be found on a stage in 2019. They are the tangible manifestation of the spirit of rock. Merit of an old book of black magic?

By now High Reeper are like at home, in Cecina. They also have the front-door key and let you find pasta ready. After their concert of the first of May last year they set so well that tonight's concert is a real reunion with friends.

Greenkalma do the honours. They welcome us with their fat and greasy riffs - that smell of weed and sweat (that of Matt Pike's belly) - and with powerful Marco Lo Presti's voice, which makes its way overwhelmingly in the sandy fog raised by the band. The desert version of Rage Against the Machine is the surprise that you do not expect, but that fits well among the massive tracks of the band, which sounds even more robust and fluid compared to their concert in Castagneto Carducci at the beginning of the year.

Rancho Bizzarro are the hosts, and they put everyone at ease with a desert rock that, every time I see them at work, it always sounds more powerful and compact. There is no shortage of lysergic openings and flowing solos, but it is in the direction of Riffs, with a capital R, that the band's music is developing. Riffs that are like solid rocks inside a liquid constantly changing music. In this archipelago, Rancho Bizzarro sow quotes and tributes to their inspiring fathers, and present them to us with the naturalness of the landlord who proudly shows you his collection of the best paintings (or records!).

To close the evening, opening the last bottle, there are the American cousins (directly from Philadelphia) High Reeper. If the previous bands had brought smoking stuff, they have a good supply of alcohol with them. Their elastic groovy doom metal is soaked in beer, which makes it slippery. Impossible not to get drunk with the oblique melodies and the constantly swaying Sabbathian riffs. Their tour has just begun, but the new drummer (Justin Di Pinto) proves he has already fully entered the band's oiled gear, even if he still does not release all his frenzy. Frenzy that instead the otherscannot contain, especially Andrew Price (sinuous like his riffs) and Zach Thomas (whose voice is definitely in a better shape than a year ago). After an amazing evening with these friends, we're looking forward to being invited once again. See you next time!

The Necromancers – Of Blood and Wine

The Necromancers – Of Blood and Wine
(Ripple Music, 2018)

The Necromancers – Of Blood and Wine
(Ripple Music, 2018)

In recent years the University of Occult Studies was born. A school of (black) magic similar to the one in which Harry Potter studies, but whose chair is entrusted to people like Ozzy, High Tide, Comus, Coven, as well as to a large group of directors of 70s horror B-movies, and to countless heavy metal musicians. French The Necromancers graduated in 2017 with their debut album (Servants of the Salem Girl) and took a specialization with Of Blood and Wine (2018). Courses on 70s occult rock, as well as those on doom metal and NWOBHM, have been carefully followed. And so were the lectures given by their fellow countryman Jean Rollin, a director who (still in the 70s) mixed foggy horror, eroticism and lysergic visions. Given the plenty of graduates in recent years, it will not be easy to find work. But these French guys prove to be able to rework what they have learned with personality, composing original and engaging melodies, always keeping an eye on the atmosphere. And, not common for those one graduating at this college, they have a singer with a warm deep voice. Alternating long tracks of progressive hard rock (masterfully flowing and always full of groove) and ballads tarnished by a layer of autumn mist, they prove to have all the credentials to play an important role in the medieval society portrayed by this university.

Sherpa – 06.04.2019 - Cascina Bellaria Rural Music Club! (Sezzadio, AL)

Sherpa – 06.04.2019 - Cascina Bellaria Rural Music Club! (Sezzadio, AL)

Sherpa – 04.06.2019 - Cascina Bellaria Rural Music Club! (Sezzadio, AL)

Everyone has realized that in recent years in Italy an extremely interesting psychedelic scene has developed. Everyone, except us Italians. While abroad they coined a name for this scene (Italian Occult Psychedelia) we did everything to hide it in the deepest underground (at La Piramide di Sangue concert we were just a handful of people, for example). Sherpa, from Pescara, are likely to suffer the same fate. Few dates - mostly in really small venues - in Italy and, on the other hand, a place on the most suggestive stage (Het Patronaat) at Roadburn Festival. Even though the aura of mystery benefits this music, bringing it to light is a moral duty that everybody trusting in the rock deity should feel within himself. The few ones at Cascina Bellaria attend a ceremony of liquid melodies, rarefied atmospheres and dilated times that they will not easily forget, and that will lead them to spread the word so that this does not disperse itself like other times in the past. Sherpa music is a cloud enveloping the audience and filling the wooden structure of the Cascina, changing shape, texture and sound pressure in a fluid and natural way. Sometimes we are surrounded by the compact globular flakes of arpeggios that spiral upwards. Others from filamentous cirrus clouds that run liquid on the handle of a fretless bass. The energy accumulates up to the point where music takes on the round shape and the dark colour of the cumulonimbus clouds on the verge of reversing the flood. It is here that the extended soundscapes drawn by a guitar rich in echoes and played with fingers, or by an E-bow, become black storm signals, a prelude to powerful ultra-low post stoner riffs. A sound miracle generated a few steps from home, that letting it slip away would be a mortal sin.

Bloodbath – The Arrow of Satan is Drawn

Bloodbath – The Arrow of Satan is Drawn
(Peaceville, 2018)

Bloodbath – The Arrow of Satan is Drawn
(Peaceville, 2018)

Time has done justice to that sound coming from the dark forest of the first Entombed record. The sound of a dense sticky substance that used to fall into the abyss creating echoes capable of awakening Cthulhu. Rough, dirty, visceral, simply obtained with the distortion of the Boss (the HM2) pushed to its maximum level. After years in which that sound was disowned by most metal musicians, in search of the most compressed and square distortion possible, it came back from the bowels of the Earth. But to make a death metal record great that magical sound smelling of mud and rotting guts it is not enough. It is necessary that those ones using it compose riffs that can awaken the dead and make them walk among us. Maybe someone who knows how to colour the carnage of black melodies. In short, we need Anders Nyström. A guitarist who manages to combine a gothic sensibility with the old school fury and the 80s horror splatter atmospheres, even if at a first hearing it appears hidden at the bottom of a lake of blood. Thanks also to Nick Holmes (Paradise Lost) bark, Bloodbath - which also include Jonas Renkse (Katatonia ) and the drummer Martin Axenrot (Opeth) - exceed the sum that we would expect from the individual parts, at least as regards Katatonia and Opeth of the last albums (certainly not the still amazing Paradise Lost!). Thanks to the HM2, able to awaken that Cthulhu lurking in these old metalheads.
