Desertfest Antwerp 2018 - Day 2

Desertfest Antwerp 2018 - Day 2
[Dopethrone + High On Fire + Messa + YOB + Enslaved + The Oscillation + Sonic Wolves + Wyatt E. + Krakow + Domkraft]

Apici personali dell'incredibile scaletta Ball of Molten Lead (da The Illusion of Motion) e Our Raw Heart (dall'omonimo ultimo album).

Desertfest Antwerp 2018 - Day 2
[Dopethrone + High On Fire + Messa + YOB + Enslaved + The Oscillation + Sonic Wolves + Wyatt E. + Krakow + Domkraft]

The day of exaggeration. After a first day of hard rock and more "traditional" stoner, today the level of distortion and volume is pushed to its extreme limit for the joy of less delicate palates, and there are many things that could be labeled as exaggerated. From the number of bands we listened to, to the beauty of some sets, not to mention the "revelations" of the day, but let's try to give an order to all this.

We start from the small Vulture Stage with Domkraft. The Swedish trio immediately plunges us into a psychedelic sea of drones, which moves in waves with a typical sludge / post metal gait (halfway between Sleep and Neurosis), with Martin Wegeland's great screamed voice playing the role of vessel captain. Riffs and sounds come out compact and powerful, highlighting an extra oomph in the closing piece, taken from their new album coming out today (Flood).

We remain in front of the smallest stage for the first half of Krakow set. Theirs is a post rock that betrays the Norwegian origins (especially in the sung parts) and that has got also a post-metal connotation, sometimes almost black. Beautiful phrasings in the most melodic and rarefied parts, to which counterbalance power and compactness in the heavier parts. Unfortunately, the harsh law of overlaps - combined with our desire to listen to as many bands as possible! - forces us to leave the set in half, to go up to the Canyon Stage.

Here we have one of those bands that we do not hesitate to define revelation of the day! We had listened to something on the internet, but it did not make the slightest idea of what Wyatt E. sound like in their live shows. Chimera born from the crossbreed of Goat, Zeal & Ardor, Om and something that has not yet been possible to give a name, the Belgian trio appears on the stage completely veiled in black, with the face covered by mask and odalisque veils, wrapped in smoke and in the most impenetrable darkness. Their music is hypnotic, heavy and stunning, characterized by a strong Middle Eastern element that makes it even more occult and fascinating. A half traditional - half electronic drum is the guide line for walls of synth and distorted guitar, at the edge of the drone, for this dark journey that really impressed and captured us.

Then we go back down to the Vulture Stage for a taste of Sonic Wolves. Strangely (because usually here at Trix sounds are great on all the stages) penalized in the first couple of songs by not properly set sounds that swallow drums and guitars, letting us listen almost exclusively to Kayt Vigil's bass and the voice. As soon as everything goes in its place the articulated construction of their songs takes on solidity and the groove and 70s sounds of the Italian band finally emerge. Too bad having to leave them on the most beautiful part!

On Canyon Stage there are The Oscillation, another band that has really bewitched us with its so obsessive psychedelia to appear almost electronic, even if played with classic instruments of rock. Rhythmic structures are both sinuous and geometric, daughters of a typically 70s and Teutonic motorik, but a noisy space guitar wraps them with an English melodic sensitivity. Like heavier and hypnotic Black Angels. A pity to have to interrupt their set too. Surely among the revelations of the day.

Something really different awaits us on the Desert Stage: the Norwegian Vikings Enslaved. Their stage is a marvel for every metalhead: columns of smoke illuminated by infernal red light and panels recalling the mysterious symbols of the artwork of their latest album (E). All geometrically perfect, like their music. Icy, compact, technically impeccable, but with a red-hot soul. Progressive metal, in the most sincere and experimental sense of the term. The setlist is rather heterogeneous, and goes to fetch even 25-year-old songs, from the early black metal era, to the beautiful Havenless from Below the Lights (the chorus of pure Nordic folk is really impressive!). Even the frozen deserts of the North can have their place in the dusty homeland of stoner doom, and Enslaved have proved it tonight.

However, the concert of the day is performed by YOB: immense. Defeated his serious health problems, Mike Scheidt came out even stronger and more powerful than before. His grit on stage is really uncontainable and his voice is impeccable in every step. Cathartic. Also bass and drums are two war machines. We are facing a lava flow, at the same time explosive and effusive, which overwhelms us in an almost literal sense. Like two years ago on the same stage, Yob prove to be a spiritual experience rather than a simple concert. Personal peaks of the incredible setlist Ball of Molten Lead (from The Illusion of Motion) and Our Raw Heart (from the homonymous latest album). Thrills!

Still stunned and regenerated by YOB, we manage to enter the Vulture Stage for the second half of Messa concert. Difficult to be amazed, a few minutes after the mystical experience of the concert of the American trio. Yet the Italian band literally leaves us speechless. If we liked them on recordings, they completely win us over with their live. It emerges even more clearly the peculiarity of their musical research which on a doom matrix inserts and blends the various multiple influences animating the band (from dark ambient to occult rock, to name just a few), with a sensitivity truly worthy heir of the best 70s Italian progressive rock. But even more stands out Sara's voice: powerful, hypnotic, with a wonderful timbre and great versatility. We are not very much flag-waving, but for once we make an exception: Messa are an Italian band to be really proud of!

It is then the turn of this Saturday headliner: High on Fire on the main stage. Live they are exactly like you imagine them: heavy, powerful, excessive, rotten. Funny as a dirty joke. Matt Pike is a real "hoer" of guitars who, together with the rest of the band, plays a perfect mix of distortion and mud. Heavy and massive they are like a Hammer launched down a dusty hill, which devastates everything it finds along its path. Unbridled stoner doom in its quintessence.

We are greedy, we know. And so we move again in front of the Canyon Stage for the latest (rancid) treat of this day. The most rotten possible, directly from the most rotten suburb of Montreal: Dopethrone. Powerful and muddy sounds - that could have been really devastating with an extra guitar -, strident screeching voices, gummy stoner-doom riffs and loads of ultra-sludgy groove. Extra rotteness and heaviness with Julie screaming in the microphones, accompanying Vince's breathless screams (a sort of Jeff Walker - of Carcass - with rotting vocal cords). Double load of slutch for everyone.

And if we still want more, there is also the after-party, with Volksradio Moos playing beautiful themed songs! We remain for a while in the area trying to put together the pieces of this long, dense, powerful and multiform day, really "exaggerated" from every point of view. But it is then time to dig deep again for the third and final day of this Desertfest Antwerp!

Desertfest Antwerp 2018 – Day 1

Desertfest Antwerp 2018 – Day 1
[Wo Fat + Orange Goblin + Dead Meadow + Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell + Lucifer + Dead Quiet]

I don’t want to grow up, dicevano i Ramones.

Desertfest Antwerp 2018 – Day 1
[Wo Fat + Orange Goblin + Dead Meadow + Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell + Lucifer + Dead Quiet]

Homely atmosphere. Being at our third Desertfest Antwerp, for us it is like visiting the family for Christmas holidays. We find old friends, we know new ones, and we are once again ready to open presents and be amazed at new discoveries. The same intimate relaxed atmosphere of each year, with the addition, in this edition, of a secret show per day, for the lucky few (30-40 people) who will solve the riddle of the day. I don’t want to grow up, as Ramones used to say.

We take our wristbands and a beer, and after a few chats in the sunny garden of the Trix we go upstairs where the Canadians Dead Quiet will be the first to turn on the amps on the Canyon Stage. They are a bit like the idiot foolish little cousins who have just entered the adolescence phase (watch videos on youtube to get an idea), and they have fun like crazy playing a heavy metal with modern sounds, full of guitar duels and tortuous structures. The frontman is a born actor and he rules the stage, and with a dirty voice that seems to come from the basement he never obscures the always involving riffs and melodies. Also not intrusive, the keyboard acts as a carpet while guitars chase each other on the stage.

We interrupt Dead Quiet concert just before the end to enter the biggest hall of the Trix - the Desert Stage - where Lucifer are about to play. Here we meet the ultra-beautiful cousin (Johanna Sadonis) and the mind-blowing music expert uncle we dote on (Nicke Andersson). We remain literally bewitched by the charm of the blonde singer and the personality of the Swedish (who immediately wins the award as the most exciting drummer of the entire festival)! The band's occult doom debut peeps out with the features of Egyptian deities in 3 or 4 tracks, but to stand out is above all the incredibly 70s rock n 'roll spirit of their new album. Extremely vintage, but never nostalgic, they play a superlative gig that far exceeds our expectations.

We go back upstairs because, even if only for meager twenty minutes, we must pay tribute to one of the most exciting (hard) rock n 'roll bands around: Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell. Having listened to them at Freakout last year, we cannot ignore them! Songs perfect to be played on a stage. The "little girl" on drums is more and more inside the band, and she keeps up with the legendary bass-guitar duo, which grinds super groovy riffs stinking of petrol, tobacco and spirits. A molotov, for how much incendiary they are.

After the races between a heavy riff and the other, up and down the Trix, we allow ourselves a bit of psychedelic chill out. In three, Dead Meadow create a suspended, desert, truly lysergic world. Great atmospheres and spaces in which to get lost, in clouds of smoke and dust. In our family reunion, there are of course also the stoned cousins, with plenty of grass. The guitar is dirty, fuzzy, beautifully noisy, totally different from the acoustic one with which the band had entertained some thirty lucky winners of the wristband for today's secret show in the basement of the venue. Sometimes their songs look like long jams... but in reality everything is, and goes, in its place.

We allow ourselves to take the first real break only now, dining in the garden, in the middle of trucks that now are a symbol of the Desertfest as much as music. We miss Sasquatch concert in the Canyon Stage (who was there told us of a memorable event), but at least we are strong enough for the energy released by Orange Goblin. The London band literally makes the Desert Stage come down, unleashing a devastating power of pure fat dirty heavy metal, played with the taste for the groove typical of a great stoner rock band. Never seen such an exalted audience at the Trix, thanks also to Ben Ward, incredible frontman able to foment all present. Here at last the uncle telling you Metallica concert during the Kill 'em All tour! Wild mosh, body surfing and above all a moment of pure American-style heavy metal, a wall of death whose collision makes people splash on all sides. Difficult to contain the energy, with such a powerful deep voice, and with a drummer that is a real automaton of precision and groove. Super-funny!

And for those who still have energies, on the Canyon Stage there is a group of Texans ready to drain them: Wo Fat. The hall is packed and we listen to their stoner rock with marked blues shades only from the back, but - thanks to perfect sounds (incredible considered where we are) - they really exalt us. Scorching and round, they accompany us at the end of this first day letting us go through a ranch lost in the desert, among rifles, drunken rednecks and some tasting of hallucinogenic substance. Every family has its crazy relatives, Desertfest is no exception!

The Well – 05.10.2018 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

The Well – 05.10.2018 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

The Well – 10.05.2018 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

It is now a well-established tradition to get ready for a festival with a warm-up concert. Also this time, exactly a week before Desertfest Antwerp, we enter into the stoner/doom mood with a concert directly at home. The Well prepare an aperitif based on sulfur riffs proudly inspired by the first Black Sabbath, and they serve it in the intimate and dark Albatross. The cocktail is a pure extract of mist, death knell and abandoned cemeteries, and it turns the venue into a damp disturbing crypt. A secret ingredient directly from ancient Egypt (maybe the same used by Lucifer) makes melodies oblique, and soon the catacomb is transformed into the basement of a pyramid infested with a curse. Drowned in a sea of echoes and reverberations, the interweaving of (male and female) voices makes the aperitif lysergic, but the compact riffs and great groove of the Austin trio keep the evening on very high levels of energy.
Funny and exciting, this cocktail is perfect in view of the dinner that awaits us in Antwerp (on whose stage we will also find The Well). Now that we have whetted our appetite, we are ready for the blowout!

Krakatoa Fest III - Day 3

Krakatoa Fest III - Day 3
[Ottone Pesante + In Zaire + Marnero + Bad Breeding + Lorø + Deadsmoke + The Moo-Rays + Fulkanelli with Stefano Pilia]

Krakatoa Fest III - Day 3
[Ottone Pesante + In Zaire + Marnero + Bad Breeding + Lorø + Deadsmoke + The Moo-Rays + Fulkanelli with Stefano Pilia]

Finally I managed to go to the Krakatoa Fest, even if only for the last day. But now that I've tried it I know that next year I'll do everything to come back and attend it in its entirety. Because on this Sunday that I spent at the TPO in Bologna I found everything that is required at a festival: excellent music - heavy, experimental, heterogeneous, but with some important fils rouges; excellent organization; a large audience, really interested in the bands on the bill. They may seem like three "obvious" things, but they are not.

First I listen to Fulkanelli, with Stefano Pilia as special guest. Drones, krautrock, psychedelic dust, vast and at the same time rarefied and fragmented soundscapes. In the darkness of the main stage (Vulcano Stage), while outside there is a blinding Sun, it is a rather alienating sound experience, which leaves suspended on the threshold, between light and shadow.

And now for something completely different. In the ring of the Uppercut Stage there are The Moo-Rays with their punk'n'roll garage. Directly from Sardinia to let us shake our asses and wear a Hawaiian shirt and a nice pair of nerd glasses. Funny and very good musicians, they're a really curious (and for me unexpected) interlude before the band that I am going to listen to on the Vulcano Stage.

Todays surprise is that Deadsmoke are on stage in an enlarged version, with Claudio Rocchetti (In Zaire and many other projects, soloists and non-soloists) creating sound effects and spaces. To the majesty and power of the Bolzano trio, Rocchetti's presence adds an important dose of psychedelia and visionariness, making their music at the same time even more physical and space. We are still in the presence of monolithic mountains, but this time it emerges even more clearly that these are not on Earth, but on Mars or on another planet of some remote galaxy. A really successful collaboration, I don't know if occasional or stable, which I hope will be proposed again in the future, I wish even on recordings.

Finally in front of the Mirror Stage too. It is literally stuck to the band, which plays on the floor level together with its audience, which is reflected (in the face) on the two large mirrors that reflect (from behind) the band. Lorø are perfect for this narrow and distorted space. Guitar and synths bombardments, for a sludgy math-noise shot straight in the face. Fast-paced set, breathless, with special guest from Hate & Merda to the microphone, directly from the audience-to the stage-to the audience.

Back under the ring, and the band waiting for me is perfect for this space. Fists in the face with the Bad Breeding (from England, the only foreign band in "my" billboard today) and their punk/hardcore, bastardized with noise, which comes directly on you, like the singer who cannot make it to stand on the stage square and is constantly around in the audience. Violent and angry at the right point, they are a cool surprise for me that I did not know them.

I give myself a break, and I enjoy the atmosphere of the TPO, waiting for the band that most of all I wanted to listen to this afternoon. And then I earn the first row under the stage. Because tonight Marnero are going to present their new album (Quando vedrai le navi in fiamme sarà giunta l'ora), and having already listened to it via streaming a couple of days before, I already know that this will be a great concert. The new songs have taken another leap forward from those of the already amazing La Malora, and live their strength and beauty are even more violent, fierce and crystalline. Videoprojections behind the stage emphasize both the most melodic parts (stressed by the strings samples) and the more hardcore ones, and JD Raudo's words fall on the audience like black poems. When Wu Ming 2 goes on stage to act Prologue it is really the peak of the set: music and words converge in a climax that leaves emptied, but at the same time enriched. The concert ends with Detriti fading into a loop. Thrills.

I remain in front of the Vulcano Stage for In Zaire. First time I listen to them live and as they begin to play I wonder why I had not done it yet! Their electronic and percussion carpets create psychedelic, space and noise vortexes in which we get totally lost. It's like being in a storm of sound, sometimes sucked into the calm eye of the cyclone, more often launched in dispersion. We cross landscapes that recall 70s krautrock, projecting us into another dimension. Awesome.

The evening ends with Ottone Pesante and their heavy brass metal. Maybe influenced by one of their t-shirts, and by the goat skull in front of the stage, but the sensation is that of listening to Sepultura, grinded and spit out through the brass. Heavy and fast, they are the perfect final at full volume, speed and heaviness of this third day of Krakatoa Fest. Now I just have to wait for the next year bill, hoping that "this camp of resistance" will continue to keep its fire and its light lit (to quote JD Raudo's words).

Graveyard + Bombus - 29.09.2018 - Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

Graveyard + Bombus - 29.09.2018 - Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

Carica a palla. Sudore a litri.

Graveyard + Bombus - 09.29.2018 - Bloom (Mezzago, MB)

There are bands you think you will never see live, and instead not only you manage to see them definitively falling in love with them (exactly a year ago, at Desertfest Antwerp), but you even see them again after only one year and with a new album! But let's proceed with order...

Tonight supporting Graveyard there are compatriot Bombus. And with Graveyard they basically only share the land of origin. Their sound - as well as their approach on stage - is definitely much heavier and "brash". It seems to have taken a step back in time and to be back at the turn of late 80s and early 90s. Energy to the max. Sweat to liters. And all the attitude of worn rockers, exciters of crowds. Absolutely funny, energetic and galvanizing, they are a fantastic warm-up while waiting for the band captained by Joakim Nilsson.

Graveyard attack with a beautiful hat-trick from their latest album (Peace) and they immediately conquer the whole Bloom. Notes flow fluid as on the album, but they are definitely more vibrant, exciting and enthralling. With his always scratchy and evocative timbre, Nilsson's voice takes a while to get warm (perhaps due to a lowering of voice or a cooling), but however it is magnetic from the beginning. And with the beautiful Slowmotion Countdown it opens itself in all its beauty, revealing all its warmth. Compared to last year concert, the new drummer (Oskar Bergenheim) is even more at ease with the rest of the band, and together with Truls Mörck's bass he gives life to a decisively carrying and overwhelming rhythm section. Tonight setlist retraces a bit all the albums of the Göteborg quartet (with the only exception of the homonymous debut album), but it dedicates a good part to the songs of the latest work, which live release all their strength and beauty. After one year, Graveyard conquer me once again, proving not only to be able to write great songs, but also to be a great live band, able to make (re)live atmospheres and sensations with a seventies flavour, but without any note of nostalgia.

Elav Stoner Open Air Festival 2018 - Day 3

Elav Stoner Open Air Festival 2018 - Day 3
[Belzebong + Papir + Weedpecker + Dead Man's Blues Fuckers + The Black Lodge]

Southern rock e heavy blues a manetta.

Elav Stoner Open Air Festival 2018 - Day 3
[Belzebong + Papir + Weedpecker + Dead Man's Blues Fuckers + The Black Lodge]

Second edition for Elav Stoner Open Air Festival, and also this year I manage to be there, though only for Saturday. And it's a real pity! Because if the first edition had already been a great debut, this second one has outdone the previous one. An extra day and an even richer and more interesting bill, in a period of the year with a decidedly milder weather. With some important milestones: free entry and the excellent ELAV beer!

But let's talk about the bands. On this hot September day The Black Lodge are the first on stage. With a strong stoner doom influence and a direct ancestry from bands like Down and Corrosion of Conformity, the Venetian band has got a great groove and the impact of a more long-standing combo. Gillo Perotta's voice stands out: not only for its power, but also for its versatility and technique. Their first album is coming out by the end of this 2018 and I would say it is worth noting it on the agenda.

It is then the turn of a duo which is much more overwhelming than an entire blues orchestra. Only guitar & voice and drums for Dead Man's Blues Fuckers, but I would say that there is absolutely no need for anything else. Southern rock and heavy blues at full throttle. Some gags betraying Diego DeadMan Potron's past as one man band, but to boss around is the desert dust which entered the dark saloon, among beer and whiskey, guns and whores. Straight for straight, with no frills.

Weedpecker are the band that more than anything else I wanted to hear today. Last January, just released their third album (III, indeed), I was captured by this Polish quartet. And as soon as Elav Stoner Open Air announced their name in the billboard, I marked the date in red on my agenda. So much expectation can be very risky. I took the risk and I was right, because live Weedpecker are even more enthralling, exciting and psychedelic than on record. If each of their riffs or guitar and bass notes gives life to sonic spaces in which to get lost, leaving dilate space and time, their voices and their intertwining (always perfect) are like sirens for Ulysses, capturing, stunning and kidnapping you towards their world beyond the mirror. Look for them around, go and listen to them live and surrender yourself to this musical trip!

Another band for the first time live in Italy and in Stickman Records roster, Papir do not need voices to let us floating suspended in the vast architectures and in the wide landscapes built by their guitar, bass and drums. Essential as a power trio can be, but complex as only certain psychedelic krautrock can succeed to be. It seems like a long jam, with a defined beginning and an unknown unpredictable outcome, but that always hits the nail on the head. They, too, a great live discovery!

"High" final with a bang. Poles like Weedpecker and with a marked taste for the inflorescence of the hemp, Belzebong are decidedly heavier, more doom and more rotten of their countrymen. There is no space for words: their Sabbath and sulphurous riffs speak for themselves. Immersed in thick clouds of smoke, the waves of their hair move out-synchronously increasing the stunning naturally produced by their songs. "Follow the smoke toward the riff filled land" looks like the perfect motto for their music, which is even more powerful, muddy and inexorably overwhelming than on record.

With the darker and heavier side of stoner this day ends together with this second edition of Elav Stoner Open Air. The appointment is definitely for next year, with the hope that this winning formula remains unchanged and, if anything, that it can only better itself, like that of the recipes of the brewery hosting and giving its name to this fantastic festival.

Killer Boogie – Acid Cream

Killer Boogie – Acid Cream
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2018)

Killer Boogie – Acid Cream
(Heavy Psych Sounds, 2018)

I can easily imagine some bearded long-haired, with biker vest, flared trousers and Texan boots, dancing the boogie-woogie. You only need the right music to fill the dance floor. A music following a typically blues structure, but with an overflowing fuzz guitar instead of a frenetic piano. Anyway, a slightly slowed blues rather than a speeded up one (after all, to see a bunch of long-haired ones dancing as if they were jumped back in time to the 30s, it is also necessary a taste of hallucinogen!). Groove level pushed to the maximum, that of bullshits to the minimum. Pure rock n 'roll spirit, explicitly influenced by the late 60s and early 70s, as in the previous Detroit (2015). But compared to the debut, Gabriele Fiori's (guitar and voice, as in his other creature, Black Rainbows) band diminishes the destructive proto-punk charge and the amazing hendrixian fantasy in favour of a tasty Cream ice-cream, with a hint of twinkly psychedelic acidity. Taste carefully, and then jump into the dance floor.
